  • Finally. The Michael Kidd Gilchrist stunted growth story. I’ve been reluctant to feature this guy because contrary to the feel it gives, this is not a bust channel. Not because you’ve had a growth stunt mean you weren’t or can’t become a great player, and person. Although I do have an ultimate bust series, featuring hall of fame bust level talent if you enjoy that. Should Kidd Gilchrist be included in that series? But before that, we have to understand the heights he was able to reach in the game of basketball that even created those expectations in the first place. How’d he become the second overall pick in the NBA draft? Ahead of Allstars Bradley Beal, Andre Drummond, Draymond Green, Chris Middleton and Damian Lillard, who’s a clear cut future HOF player along with Green, Beal and possibly Middleton. Well, he became a budding star in high school playing a secondary role to Kyrie Irving as a sophomore and Irving a junior. By his senior year, many scouting services ranked him top 3 in the nation and some even as high as #1. He was Mr basketball USA in 2011, McDonald’s all American and one of the stars for an HBO documentary. To beef his draft stock, he was Co MVP in the all American game and won a gold medal in the fiba under17 world championships. After being all everything in high school, he committed to Kentucky along with 2 of the top 5 recruits and 4 other future NBA players including Anthony Davis. They won the National Championship giving famed coach John Calipari his first championship. This is how Kidd Gilchrist did it, and this is why he was reached for at #2 overall, when all the signs suggested he needed a lot of work and definitely not that caliber of player. Here are 3 reasons he’s known and an ultimate bust, finessed the league and his growth was stunted. Finally! The Michael Kidd Gilchrist stunted growth story! What Happened?

MKG always played big. You can see it with what little offensive repertoire he has (offensive rebounding, short mid baby hooks, close range jumpers). He should've always been an undersized 4 but Charlotte drafted PFs three drafts in a row. The jumper was always going to be a work in progress and everyone knew it at the time. Charlotte really just drafted him because he was a workhorse and they thought he could start a culture shift, not looking into what his personality coming out of college was (and because they thought they were getting AD after probably the worst season in NBA history).
Oh and Mark Price kind of left him for dead midway through promising to fix his jumper so take that how you will. There was improvement in the area right before Price left and then he got hurt. He reverted to the janky inward elbow again after coming back.
Clifford is probably the only coach who ever believed in his strengths, letting him crash the glass with reckless abandon and letting him post up a bit when opposing teams hide small guards on him. The moment Clifford left, Borrego just put him in the doghouse, never used him and then he got waived.

I feel like MKG growth wasn’t stunted. He became exactly who is was probably always going to be. He has some special physical gifts, but also had some very big weak points. In the long run, MKG had a fairly long 8 year NBA career and made starter money for most of that. That’s the best case scenario for his level of talent. He got picked high because some teams have the hubris to think they can fix any flaw, which isn’t true. Really, the only stunted growth in this story is that of the Charlotte basketball team due to management.

These are my real questions I have because I’ve watched just about all his college and NBA games from day 1 I never seen the hype and I really try to find the the smallest part of someone’s game that can be elite if developed but I’ve never seen it in MKG. Clearly there culture isnt good for development most times. They tend to get these high draft picks and turn these players in to bust. Then by the time their traded they already have developed bad habits.

I'm a UNC fan, and I remember there was a St. Patricks game from 2009 on demand, and I was at my mom's house, and Dexter Strickland, who was a UNC commit was in that game, and I wanted to see him, so I turned it on. MKG was in tenth grade then, and I had no clue who he was, and after a while, I stopped watching Dexter, (who was not all that impressive) and just focused on him, because I just couldn't believe how hard this kid played. His motor truly never stopped, and I remember after the game, I looked online and saw that he was the second ranked player in the class of 2011, and I thought "Ah, this makes sense now." I always LOVED his motor...not necessarily his overall game because of that awful hitch in his shot, but I always believed that he'd at least be a good NBA player for the simple fact that he played so unbelievably hard all the time. While that motor always burned hot, and still does, that offensive game never developed, and he never could get that shot together, which really lead to his downfall in the league. But, shoutout to him for getting as far as he did with a pretty limited skill set.

Then he tore that shoulder and his form reverted, he could've been a respectable role player had he fixed that. He played very good D in fact when he showed that chart you see it right there. that shot could have and should have been corrected.
if you let the guy shoot the ball like that in practice you should be fired. he shouldnt have even been allowed to touch the basketball until they completely corrected his mechanics. starting w/ his footwork. he's sideways to the basket before he even starts to shoot the ball. everything after that is compensation. if you turn his body to face the basket all the insane arm positioning naturally will change as a result.
any professional basketball player that has poor shooting mechanics can be easily corrected w/ effort. no matter what it is, you have to start at the beginning. getting your feet in proper alignment EVERY time. for this not to happen I cant help but think the coaches had no intention of helping him become a better player.
