Say what you will about Banquet pot pies, but at 17, in 1970, living alone in a ratty one room apartment, working PT at night and going to high school during the day, these pies saved my bacon. They were 10 for $1.00 back then, so I'd buy 20, half chicken, half beef, which lasted me a week. I did this for over 6 month's, until I graduated, turned 18, and got a fulltime job (also got a new apartment & some pots and pans). Now 71, and rarely eat pot pies, but when I do, it's always Banquet.

I hear ya ! ! ! Sometimes cheap gets us by on a budget. I recall eating lots of Chef Boy R Dee Ravioli, and TV dinners while in college. They sometimes were $1.00 each or 2 for $1.75. Those savings allowed me gas for the car, book expenses, and a Starbucks Coffee once a week. Saving then has paid off in budgeting well and living today.

@@GerrycavTrue, processed foods tend to introduce excessive amounts of salt.
Nevertheless, salt does not account for the common elevation in blood pressure that's more likely owing to metabolic syndrome.
Focus on treating hyperinsulinemia, by reducing/eliminating excessive carbs like soda, bread & pasta.
Another trick is to increase potassium intake. Our bodies need roughly 4500 mg daily.

That is my favorite pot pie. I used to love a few of their dinners as well. My two favorites were the herb roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and corn and the beef tips in mushroom sauce with roasted potatoes and green beans with cranberries. I used to wait until my local grocery store would put them on sale 4 or 5 for $10 and then fill my freezer with them. LOL Sadly neither of those are available anymore. They still have the country fried chicken and gravy that I used to get as well, but I stopped buying them at all when they ended my two favorites. Now I only get the chicken pot pies and occasionally their beef pot pies.

Im widowed, now live alone, and living on a fixed income, so simple inexpensive 'meals-for-one' are what I mostly eat. I like the Marie Callender large size (15 oz) pot pies. I like the creamy parmesan chicken or the plain chicken and can get them at Walmart for $3.50. I would give these pretty high marks for what you get for that price. Walmart used to carry the MC cheesy chicken & bacon pot pie but they stopped which is a shame as I really liked them too. I always bake them in the oven (not microwave) although they take an hour to cook.
    Thank you

Whatever happened to Swanson Pot Pies? Over 4 decades ago when i was introduced to the wonderful world of cheap frozen foods, Swanson Chicken Pot Pies were my go to meal. They only came in one size(children's), had to be cooked in the oven & took forever to cook. I threw in at least 3 at a time & 3 pies were a decent meal & worth the wait. Where I live, I have only seen Banquet & Marie Calendar's in the stores. I get the Large size Marie Calendar's, in beef, chicken & turkey flavors only & am very happy with them. Maybe all the ingredients for my pie were mistakenly put into the pie that was photographed for this video! Also, Marie Callender's shepherd's pie -- for those who don't want crust -- is to die of, not to die for. My current favorite chicken pot pie is made by a local supermarket chain and sold at its deli counters. It delicious and packed with chicken and vegetables, now my icon for making my own pot pies.

I got frozen pie crust already in a pie shell, dumped two cans Campbell's Chicken Corn Chowder soup, after draining off some of the juice into the pie crust. Covered the top with pie crust dough punching a few holes to vent, and baked in the oven. It wasn't a knock-out but was good, satisfying, and enough for another meal. I used to work in a place that made food boxes for many companies, among them ConAgra. Now, ConAgra makes a large majority of the standalone round pot pies on the market. Same filling lines, different boxes depending on brand and/or flavor. They make most store brands as well as Marie Callender, Banquet, Swanson, etc. Since they are made on the same equipment, on the same production lines, using basically the same ingredient lists, they shouldn't vary all that much. Time spent in shipment, incidental thawing during shipping and stocking, freezer conditions, and consumer expectations/bias are also factors.

Only one word for the best one ever. COSTCO Chicken Pot Pie. I love Marie Callendar's for individual pies, but Costco takes pot pie to another level. They are huge, weighing in at 5.5 pounds with a cost of $3.99/lb. So getting a 16 oz portion for $3.99 is clearly the best price of any good pot pie. They also are fresh, not frozen, using nothing but yesterday's leftover broiler breast meat for the generously sized chunks of chicken. A fantastic and homemade-tasting pastry crust and gravy. Veggies are veggies to me, but I appreciate fresh, and theirs do not disappoint. This pie will easily feed a family of six! I hate supporting Costco for personal reasons, but unfortunately, they have some of the best quality food products available.

Early in the video is a picture of the ingredients in a banquet pot pie. A few years back I ate one and kept track of the meat, potatoes, carrots and peas in it. They would have all fit comfortably in a tablespoon. Growing up in the fifties/sixties I ate a lot of swanson tv dinners. As I recall their small pot pies were great and enough food to fill me up for lunch. Their dinners were as good as eating at home and had a wider variety than what we ate at home. I think a lot of it was they were sold in foil and you had to cook them in an oven for an hour to get them ready. Same with the pot pies. You'd open athe dinners up and the peas were plump and steaming. The mashed potatoes rich like fresh mashed potatoes. Lots of meat like the turkey dinners had three nice thick slices. You even got cranberry sauce with them. It's sad that they actually can sell the pot pies banquet produces today. Less ingredients and cooked in the microwave for convenience means that the food simply isn't worth the trouble of cooking it.

I'd like to try the last one but have never heard of it or seen it anywhere. They could ALL cut down on the salt content!

      @BSLO48 9 місяців тому

I looked them up also. Starting price around $80.00 for 2 pies of unknown size OMG. Around $40.00 each pie, I thought inflation had gotten bad but who wants to pay that for a frozen pot pie? No wonder they won the contest when they are compared to pies that cost $7.00 in the market. Maybe they are bigger but still. I pay $6.00 for a Blakes Chicken pie and always feel like that the price is too high. @@mortimergladbreath

Years ago, the banquet pot pies were very good; rich, brown gravy and loaded with carrots, potatoes, peas, onion, and meat. Over time they've continued to deteriorate and the last ones I bought (3 or4 years ago) were nothing but a top crust (no bottom crust) a little watery gravy, and a few tiny pieces of shredded veggies. Personally, I wish they'd go back to making them edible and raise the price when necessary.

Callendar's beef pot pies used to be fantastic: big chunks of beef in a thick gravy. The last one I had, the "gravy" was a bullion cube in a half cup of water, the beef tasted (and smelled) rancid, and gave me a nasty case of explosive diarrhea. Never again!!

I you have a pot pie that the back of the box has a list of ingredients that covers the entire length of the package it's best to leave this product line in the store freezer. Pot pie = Fresh meat, fresh vegetables, fresh butter pie crust, fresh meat gravy, bake until golden brown and season to taste. No need for all the salts, food dye, and various chemicals that enhance preservation. Basic ingredients and a 10 year old grandchild can make a flavorful meat pot pie.

When you say Willow Tree is “available in most stores”, where are you talking about? I can find none are available in my area. Looks like an east coast thing? Anybody in Oregon heard of them?

    • @Carol120454

Willow Tree is/ was based in MA. Years ago, the man who owned it used to sell eggs from his chickens in my neighborhood. This was back in the 60's. We had the egg man, bread man, milk man, fruit and veg man. Most women were housewives and home in the daytime. Some, like my mother, didn't drive. The pies came out in the 70's. Not sure if the same family owns the business. I don't think it ever went beyond New England. One pie will feed a family, they're big. They don't have veg in them, just chicken, and they are expensive these days. I'd rather make my own. I use refrigerated pie crust (1/2 the price of name brand at Aldi's) canned chicken, mixed veggies (frozen, but thaw them) and a can of cream of chicken soup. Mix broth from the can with the soup. You can use leftover chicken, turkey, or beef. Bake at 425 degrees for one hour. Comes out great, hubby loves it.

For beef pie, use cream of mushroom soup with a tablespoon or so of Worcester sauce or steak sauce mixed in and some canned beef broth for the gravy.

In my town, we have a generations old Chicken Pot Pie restaurant. Their in-house pies for diner are fresh. You can buy affordable dinner the includes mashed potatoes, coleslaw, the pie of course with extra gravy if you like, dinner roll, and a choice of pie for dessert. I love that place. They also offer frozen pie to take and bake at home. It beats Marie Callender‘s , and I really like those pies. Maybe I’ll mention the pie shop tonight instead of Smash Burger.
