      Thanks. In these ones with a lot of formations... We have to be super careful. It is not even really loved within the caving community that we show videos of them. So we have to take extra care not to show locations or anything.

    • @Pihan-
      @Pihan- 2 роки тому +11

      @@CalvinHikes I know you wouldn't want people going to the locations and defiling the formations but are there really anti-spelunkers going around just to destroy the fun for other people? Me being someone who doesn't cave wouldn't waste my time going to a cave to destroy structures, but I don't know.

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  2 роки тому +49

      @@Pihan- No there aren't any people looking to destroy caves. And there aren't anyone who's going to come out to these caves ever.
      Our care of this cave location is a courtesy to the people who are stewards over the caves of this area. I think they are overjudging people's zealousy to find caves like this and go in them. But it's not always our call. The caving community works together to share information and so we have to be respectful of what other groups want also.
      With highly sensitive caves like this it doesn't take much. Even good cavers with good intentions over time will damage parts of the cave. So it's also about limiting all cavers... even respectful cavers like us.
      I'm telling you it's a sensitive community!

      Despite the horrible looks of the cave the real dangers are probably not anything that you would ever be able to think of. The biggest war down here is the temperatures. We don't really worry about anything else. We're just trying not to freeze to death most of the time.

    That frothy light colored lava is pumice, or some variety of it. THat isn’t the usual vesicular basalt you’re in. Was it glassy? The formations may be that way because of their viscosity and temperature. It also appears as if there was strong wind flow which blew it into those weird and fragile formations. Or water was in there at some time. Do you know why it’s that way?

    And is it something you think of when you are exploring caves?

    • @billsanders9387

    Ok legit question. Assuming you guys found essentially the only path in and out through which you could barely squeeze through. Let’s say you’re in there and some piece of large rock’s time has come to detached and fall, blocking your exit path. Are you pretty much done? I don’t think an army of engineers would be able to dig into that cavern without crushing you in the process. That’s if you can even radio out for help. This is nuts.

    • @billsanders9387

      Sure and I would have done the whole thing upside down just for fun. The danger of caves like that isn't the cave so much as it is that it's open to the public so you get a lot of people that don't necessarily know what they are doing really pushing their own limits too far, too often. Still I think that John Jones tragedy is a bit of an anomaly. And the closing of the cave was unfortunate.
