One of our most enjoyable caving days! Says the old guy who stayed on top while Calvin went down and got lost. Lol
ah man the first 3min got me hyperventilating had to pause it
Just subscribed to your other channel as I know it will be as good as this one. Thankyou for another brilliant and educating video.
Hi, I saw one of your previous videos earlier where Jacob talked about the John Jones case. Would you be interested in covering that story a bit more, like what could have been done to save him from an expert’s point of view? Was there any way of him turning around some way perhaps? Thanks!
Hi from UK, Im late to this video but I always watch because I find them so interesting. Can you do a video on the formations and markings in the caves explaining how they got there and how long it would take to develop etc!? They just look so cool and its good to see your still caving with your dad ☺👍
Me comfortably sitting on my recliner and having a panic attack seeing this, kudos to you guy 🙌🙌
Thank you! We're just out here havin' a good time
Right!!🤣
That dude is so charismatic and loves what he does, Can almost sell you on something you'd swear up and down you wouldn't do.
Thank you! No matter what you do in life, you are always selling yourself, not your product. In other words people (generally) like people for who they are not what they do.
This reminds me of the time that I became hopelessly lost in IKEA.
Fortunately I was escorted to the exit by security after being spotted on CCTV relieving myself in a flowerpot.
My wife drug me to IKEA once. I’m MUCH more comfortable in a cave at 35 degrees and lost in some new corridors. Grandpa.
Good tip. However . . . I think I bought that flowerpot!
😂😂😂
@@gunlokman hopefully it wasn’t the one that had raccoon scat in it too 💩 🦝🦝🦝 💩
ALWAYS bring a good map to Ikea, and leave rock stacks at the entrances.
Big respect. I could never do this. To much fear. To tight. Hope you never get hurt. Be careful
I have never watched any amount of UA-cam videos that I genuinely cannot look away from bc they are so entertaining. Thank you for making this content!
Thank you so much that's very nice of you to say.
Some years ago, I went through a lava cave (could walk upright all the way) but would never do the stuff you do. I am sure lava caves are safer than old mines to explore. I am getting better at not getting freaked out by the tight spaces when I watch cave exploring, but I did get spooked by the thought of getting lost underground........Great video!!!!!
I think most caves are less prone to collapse than mines. But mines are fun too!
“Wherever I’m there I am” lol. Have you ever been in a situation where you’re truly panicked from being lost or in a scary situation? Love your stuff. Send “little” Jacob through first haha.
Maybe twice I've been turned around where it took me a little while to find the way out and it wasn't very fun. But it's not difficult to avoid such situations. But you do have to pay attention!
Most underrated channel on UA-cam!! Filming and editing has only gotten better and better with every video!
Thank you! We may slow the process down even more. I'd like to work on some real feature length shows. But it means more time between video releases. We'll see what happens!
@@CalvinHikes If the content keeps improving, I'm sure it's worth it! Also, just an idea, consider hiring a cheap freelancer/designer to create improved graphics for your cave maps. It may be too much of an ask, but some 3D graphics could really help viewers better understand the dimensions of the areas you explore.
The first time I watched these videos, I thought to myself: "never in a million years." After a few videos, I found myself thinking id definitely give it a try with these guys. I am not sure its one thing specific that made the change, moreso the combination of Charisma, Attitude and Ambition displayed in these videos. About a month after starting watching them, i found myself making it up all the climbs ive never brought myself to try at my local nature reserve (its a large natural sandstone quarry). Couldnt be happier. I thoroughly enjoy it, and now I am planning my first caving experience in a couple of months! my addiction to the outdoors is growing, adding paramotoring to the list of hobbys soon as well. Thanks, calvin and family, for the inspiration!
As we say, you will never know your limits unless you push them. Great story.
Just wanna say thank you for deciding to make this channel and share all ypur caving trips with us. I cant physically go caving anymore due to a severe back injury from a car accident 4 years ago and last time i tried to go caving was 3 years ago and it was a beginner cave but doing these types of caves with crawls and squeezes and low cielings to get to lava rooms and bubble rooms that nobody really goes into and is still all intact i cant go into anymore and ypur videos are amszing and allows me to be able to experience caving again in a way along with yall. I have only 25 percent rotation and flex in my spine and im only 32 and i hurt every day and legs go numb no way i could ever go on yhese tight caving trips ever again so thabk yall
I love this channel.. Wouldn't dream of going caving myself but it's so interesting to watch you guys do this. I'm amazed anyone can enjoy it tbh but it makes exceptional viewing :)

The continuing caving adventures of John Malkovitch and his dad/nephew/nephews friend are absolutey terrifying. I couldn't do what you guys do. Kudos!
Caving kinda becomes a family gig. There’s so much to discover, and as we tell the family, they crawl in the truck when we start loading gear.
Seeing the light from the exit must have been so relieving
Sometimes that is a really fun part. The longer I am in the cave the more exciting seeing light is. Here, honestly it was nice that my dad was outside laughing at me.
Best way to go caving is drinking a bottle of vodka and then smoking a zoot! 👌 Nothing more sobering than getting stuck in a solid rock tube 👐
Never tried either, but being in a tight cave seems to keep us quite alert. Thanks for watching.
I just got back from the states, I live in the uk. I have never been caving but wish I could have had a day with you two and experience it. I’m addicted to your channel, to see your experience and skill level when underground amazes me, thank you for the videos and please keep them coming.
Y'all got a lot of caves in the UK. Lots of limestone!
I do the same when bushwalking in a place I do not know well with forks in the route. I leave arrows made out of rocks to indicate which direction I came from when a path has forks for my return. It is amazing how different a path looks like when walked the opposite direction. A path you think you remember can look very different on the return. Easy to get lost. I rarely have to do this as I have a very good memory and sense of direction. One time I did this and was glad I did. I was 5 hours out from the car park, had only met one other person in the five hours of walking. I realised when I got to the end of the track that the path I was on had become an animal track, not human. It just ended and was very hard to follow. Without the return arrows I would have struggled.
I have binged watch every one of your episodes and crave more!
more is always on the way!
I assume you've found the 2nd channel? We try to post new videos every week over there.
Hello, I've been watching your videos for a while, and you inspired me to start going caving and recently went to Swildon's Hole in Somerset in the UK with a guide, best experience ever, also terrifying, but so amazing and can't wait to go again. Thanks for the inspiration, keep doing what you do! 😁
That is awesome and thank you for sharing your experience. There are some amazing and huge caves in the UK. Some are well off the beaten path where you wouldn't need a guide. And none would be available.
I thought lava tubes trend in one direction.
They do. Downhill! Which is why going the wrong way is not an immediate emergency. But you don't want to discount a lava tubes ability to become mazy.
It must feel so good to see the light of day after all that.
"Shouldnt go too far" Switches to the tightest spot ever 9:50 😂
Such is the life of a caver. Thanks for watching. Btw, I would have eaten his lunch if my son didn’t get out in an hour. Bad dad

Caveman survived two tours in the gulf. Caving is easy! Caveman’s dad
loved your dads speech...inspiring
Awesome, thank you..
Could ya imagine taking a stroke under there... or something like that
Yes, but could you imagine having a stroke in your car while driving? While bench pressing? While on a plane? There's no good place to have a stroke.
BadDad here. At 73, the stroke has crossed my mind. The caves we do are not generally even known to rescue people. If I deceased underground, It was doing what I love, I live ready to meet the Great Creator, and saves the undertaker all the digging.
This video is insane!! Frickin awesome!! I'm surprised you can even walk with balls that big and heavy LMFAO 😂 Glad you made it outta there!! ✌️I watch all your videos, there educational and interesting
We’re just normal guys until we go underground. Then we get crazy. We’re glad to hear you find these interesting. Bad dad.
If u get lost just dig up until u reach the surface and try find Ur co ordinates for Ur house
Interesting suggestion. That is some very tough digging. Much of this lava is literally glass hard! Caveman’s dad
how do you stay calm in these situations bro, I would literally start crying
I'm not always calm.
Anyone else get a panic attack everytime he goes through a squeeze?
“Idk why my phones broken, that don’t make no sense” 🤣 I felt that.
We are not kind to phones, clothes, or our knees. 🤪
I love watching cavers its just awesome Id be afraid myself as you mentioned most won't do it so you show us the unique formations you find. Excelent Thank you I did want to ask why is a rope as a marker a bad idea?
There's generally just better ways to Mark directions then what most people might assume. Using anything to Mark directions is fine but there's just easier ways. We use rocks available in the caves. We know how to place them without having to create an entire Arrow so that we know which direction is the way out.
If someone is just going to go caving once they are likely to use string but it is probably not necessary. If you need to use rope or string to mark your route then you're probably not going to have enough anyways.
And the truth is, most people who cave a lot just memorize the cave. Even if mistakes are made we can always find our way out. Just like driving through your neighborhood we create a mental map to navigate and that's a lot easier than stringing your way through a cave and creating a huge mess.
But I have used string at times. Just not very much as I have learned better ways to navigate
Man this makes me want to go find more caves in Central Oregon. I've had some of the scariest, and funnest moment of my life exploring lava tubes.
Looooooots of lava caves out there. Many are publically listed. We're out there often.
ua-cam.com/video/khn4FsqOz0M/v-deo.html
@@CalvinHikes yes tons, and alot that aren't listed. I hope you got to see some of the ice caves while you were out here.
Are you a member of a caving grotto? If you're in caves a lot, it's a good place to share information. There's the Oregon grotto, the Oregon high desert grotto, and the Willamette Valley grotto which are in those caves in central Oregon quite a bit.
have you ever had an experience where you were truly terrified being stuck? this Is so cool haha
Nope! I'm always half terrified but we've never got stuck.
I'm just gonna get up in the morning and risk my life for the hell of it because someone on you tube might like it !
We don't want you to like it.
You guys are crazy in terms of the regular person, but if seeing how calm you guys remain. I can tell this makes you guys happy, and that’s what makes the videos so cool, but just so we’re clear, I would never do what you guys do, you guys are crazy to me 😂
Yes crazy is a compliment!
You can always watch the footage and see where you went
I have used that technique. Usually when I lose an object I will go back and see where it wis where it was last on the video.
Wow!! Hugh props for doing this. There is no way I could crawl thru a cave this tight. I would have a panic attack, especially if I knew I made a wrong turn and could possibly get lost or get stuck. Do you ever get scared? Like scared you might get stuck crawling thru a tight spot or scared you might be lost and not find your way out? Or do you get scared for your son that he may get stuck or lost and not come back out? I know I would be terrified it was my son. Have you ever not let him go thru a certain cave because it was too dangerous? Just curious.
We are always a little bit scared. But the danger in these caves is not getting lost or stuck. It's probably freezing to death or falling on rocks.
The unseen enemy is the temperature.
There are lots of times where Jacob does not go where I go.
Whenever i watch these videos i need to wear protective goggles, a helmet, a bulletproof vest, and 3 flashlights
You are ready for a cave. BTW, our “Flashlights” are 12,000 lumen. Find one of those and you can take video underground.
What Volcano is it, St. Helena? Looks like she's been busy making caves all these years!
Recently she's been burying them in ashes. But the lava fields here are some of the most rich with caves.
See I would enjoy doing something like this but I would not do any tight squeeze caves. I would want a cave I could scoot through
There are caves that fit most preferences. The challenge is finding them. Enjoy the search.
I'm going on a cave adventure alone this weekend. Never done it before but it should be a easy cave
Have fun! Let us know how it goes.
This is the closest ill be to a cave
You might be surprised.
I'm really curious to know the back story here. Did grandpa start the family on the love of caving? What credentials and training ( besides hands on) do they all have? Best caving channel I've found so far. I see so many channels that appear to have cavers caving without the necessary training and safety measures. The adventure twins for example I feel like will wind up on a story time channel speaking about one of, or both their deaths. Hope I'm wrong.
I'm sure we told our back story we have a second channel where we've done some interviews.
We're just an outdoor family. Never occurred to us that that would be interesting to others.
My personal cave training has come through an organized caving group located here pacific northwest. It's fine to cave without a lot of knowledge but if you're going to get into difficult stuff and especially vertical, you better be prepared.
I don't know anything about the adventure twins. Just never forget that whatever you watch on youtube is somewhat a work of fiction.
I wouldn't enter a cave like that with a cave tour guide lol.
Lol indeed! We don’t encounter other people, so you are definitely in the majority. Thanks for watching. Caveman’s dad
I wonder if people have died in caves because they got so lost and couldn't get out. Imagine finding a set of bones deep inside a cave that would be creepy

So, what do you do when the lights go out and you can't see to find your your way?
Pull out a new flashlight? Use a chemical light. Use our mechanical light? Use fire?
We generally carry enough light and light sources to be able to stay underground for 2 weeks. But crawling out in the dark is also no problem.
I love those videos and would never do that. But I do things most of the people couldn’t handle and there is ONE thing you all need to know : WE ARE ADDICTS NOT HEROES OR COURAGEOUS OF ANY SORT.
Maybe it takes courage to be an addict.
@@CalvinHikes that’s the first step yes ;)
I don't think so...@@CalvinHikes
Done so by professionals you say
Follow us and you will understand.
Is it scarier getting stuck in a tight squeeze or getting lost in a maze of unfamiliar passages ? How long were you actually lost down there ? I have no idea how you handle the fear ?!
There is obviously discomfort but I find that patience is the basic key to overcoming any of these challenges. Because the fear and the panic is more of a lie than a truth. I got turned around down here but I was never going to fail to make it out. We get stuck sometimes but I'm going to never fail to get out eventually.
There are plenty of safeguards in place for us. In this case I wasn't alone dad was waiting on the surface. So it's a bit of a false fear even tyou're even though I have to concentrate to get out of the situation.
Oh shit no more John jones tragedy anymore , God with you my friend

Crawling through cracks, exploring caves. The family business.
Yes indeed! And we all love the silence, solitude, and beauty of caving.
What I learned from steve, is to mine diagonally to make stairs.
That's Minecraft. This is a cave!
I fear no caves, but darkness inside.
Where there iis darkness, we bring light.
what is your back up situation with torches and batteries etc?
I keep enough batteries and lights to stay underground for about 15 days. Backups to that are chemical lights or mechanical lights or fire. Backups to that is getting out in the dark.
And yet I've never had a single battery or flashlight fail.
So how did you get out where you were lost?
I back tracked and renevigated repeatedly until I found the exit.
Obviously you made it out but wow, that would terrify me, especially since you are alone.
This is gonna be a dumb question but if you can see your footprints in can’t you just follow them back out? Love the content amazing claustrophobia inducing stuff.
It's not at all a dumb question. Yes I can. Not always but, in here, it's sand prints and that's essentially how I got back out. There are gaps but you just have to keep going until you see your own footprints... or more obviously, knee prints from my knee pads.
Ant- there’s a human down here and I would say he fairly lost 😂
We have had that experience...but it was us! 🤪
you can stop and replay your video from the place where you think is familiar with your map and return again one by one am i right?
Yes. We use that technique more often if we forget gear somewhere. We can use the video to see where we left it.
This cave had kind of a sandy floor so I could back track my own prints
I was going to ask about your Dad being a caver back on the day, since he’s keen to explore some tight passages, but he answered that question.
Yeah we probably consider ourselves an outdoor family. caving hiking climbing rafting or otherwise. It's not always been easy. I was taught to swim by being thrown into a river. ; )
Bad Dad here. Some day I Hope Calvin posts some of our very restrictive box canyon explorations. Hiking a NW Creek from it’s mouth to it’s source has been equally harrowing...except God provides the light.
Fourth dimensional beings: Wow! Look at the insides of this human

Sweaty feet and palms every time I watch you guys 😂
A few spiders should cure that. 🤪
If your a bread fan , watch them make it , that will explain things, it did for me .for wt struggles, 💖
The heat that created these lava tubes would have overcooked that bread.
A little trick I like to do, so that I never get lost in a cave, and don’t have any problems finding my way out, is to never, ever, go into a cave.
Profound
How expensive is it yearly???
The caves are free!
The cost of equipment if you're going to be making videos is rather expensive. The cost of clothing is usually about one set per cave. So we try to buy cheap gear because it wears out very quickly. You could buy cheap lights and batteries and get away at low expense. But good equipment costs more of course.
We go through maybe 5K of equipment per year. That doesn't include gas for the trips. And my personal cost is more because it's almost always double bringing Jacob.
@@CalvinHikes thanks
So do you guys have cell service down in the caves!!!! And do you carry it incase of!
There isn't even sell service outside. Not for miles and miles. This is self rescue only.
@Caveman Hikes ow. And you mean self rescue as in if something God for bid happen your on your own
And that’s why grandpa waited outside on this last crawl. plan B
@@billsanders9387 got ya
how about carrying a sat phone
Why is string not recommended? I taught myself how to navigate wooded areas using nothing but a compass and some ribbon, I would have assumed it worked the same way with caves.
It's essentially that. Instead of ribbon we make rock stacks or use identifying markers. I like to use nerf darts because they are Orange and have a tip which I can use to point in the direction of the exit.
String is OK. It creates a mess which visitors often fail to clean up when they are done. And if a cave is going to actually be a problem, then there probably isn't enough string. We're not saying it wouldn't work and it certainly will make people feel more comfortable. There are just other methods that are a bit simpler and cleaner.
And honestly, even in a cave just paying attention is the best way to not get lost.
@@CalvinHikes Wow, thank you for the detailed and prompt response, that's fantastic. I do understand the issue of running out, that definitely makes sense, as most forested areas near me can be travelled in a (mostly) straight line I hadn't really thought about that. You are all set for caving! Caveman’s dad
Do you think caving helps teach patience? I know from experience golf can at time's.
Yes. I believe that's the primary things that I have learned caving.
I've also learned what a weapon patience can be. There is so much that can be accomplished if you focus on the task and not being in a hurry at it.
I imagine golf is a teacher of a great many things. I always hated my dad' teaching us golf... let the club do the work. I always wanted to swing harder. Let the club do the work.
Hey brother what's State are you filming in it looks like Washington state to me
We do most of our caving in the Pacific northwest.
Your dad's words so strong I love it!!
Why is it part III? And then II? Did 2 happen before 3?
Yes it's in non chronological order.
When was this all lava?
Best guess is 7000 years back. Some of the erosion, however, occurred in the 1980 eruption.
Any closer and we’d have needed an ice axe. This is on the highest passable road on the Saint. Thanks for watching and commenting. Bad dad.
I want to go caving with you but im scared
Scared of us or scared of caving?
@@CalvinHikes caving
How the hell was u not crying atthat point
I cry plenty but not in caves.
Why is using string/a line not recommended? I know cave divers are adamant about using them
Well if you mean actual people caving in water then maybe it's something they use. They would have a more difficult time keeping track of their path.
We aren't adamantly against it, there are just easier and better ways to keep track of your path in most caves. String can also end up getting messy and if a cave is truly a maze problem... you're not going to have enough string anyway.
All that being said most folks who don't have better methods are just going to use string. Last time I was in a cave there was so much string I kept getting my gear caught in it. People used it then just left it. That's how it almost always happens.
Why is this video backwards
Sometimes, it's fun to do things out of chronological order and it makes a better story. It was an intentional artistic decision. In this case, it puts the excitement at the front which is better for UA-cam. And it witholds the mystery of how I got stuck until later.
I no that scared is an understatement for you guys but I'm deathly afraid of being stuck and not being able to get out kind of like John Jones except we all no what happened to John God rest his soul but I could never do this
Fear is common. How one deals with it is important. Caving is an extreme sport that demands personal development of deep concentration. Thanks for watching
Hey, I saw that you said that you got banned on tiktok. You might overcome the issue by scrapping the original audio and commentating only, for tiktok videos
We found that only works sometimes. And even if it does work then those videos don't go viral. So at this point we've sort of cut ties with the idea of TikTok. It's a bit too much of a hassle for me to manage.
Although there are a few false accounts posting our videos on TikTok successfully. They seem to have figured it out.
It’s just a suggestion, but you should probably find your way out.🤣👍
Why do I never see cavers use a can of spray paint to mark an arrow towards the exit? That's what I would do
Because it is both against the law and against the code of caving to mark caves in any way.
In order to find out about the locations of caves you are generally required to learn and adhere to a certain code of conduct. That's why you don't see cavers do that. Also because you learn other methods of navigation which are easier than spray painting the walls. Also most caves are wet and painting walls doesn't really work anyways. And these caves are freezing so the spray paint wouldn't work very well.
If there is spray paint in known caves groups of cavers will actually go in and scrape to paint off the walls. The only place you find a lot of spray paint is in public caves. And they are usually covered like the side of a train car.
Nutty Putty Time!
We pretty much stay right-side-up. Caveman’s dad
Absolutely terrifying to think of getting lost in a space that tight. Huge props to you for still recording and showing us this footage.

You know what would be an AMAZING TOOL THAT I JUST REALIZED??? With The newer iPhones you can scan an area and it creates a 3D model of the areas scanned. You could scan and make a 3D map of an entire cave with your iPhone (and probably some spare batteries) I think I’m going to try this on my first caving trip soon
Yes you can but it can only do one small area at a time. But that technology is at our doorstep. I for one am very excited about 3D mapping the interior of a cave.
I imagine it’s very easy for people to panic as soon as they feel lost / scared / stuck. I assume that’s how cavers end up losing their lives! It’s good to see you stay so calm even under times of intense pressure!
Good on you.
Yea panic creeps up on all of us. But fear only leads to bad decisions.
I only discovered your videos about a week ago and I just keep watching. I am at about the 3 minute mark and I have to say that this has prove to cause me the most anxiety. At this point I don't see anyone with you and I have the worst sense of direction every (so getting lost is my thing). That being said I don't think I will ever go caving but I will keep watching these videos!!! More exciting than the Marvel Universe.
Welcome to the dark frontier.
This is why I take a cave diving line with me in dry caves.
We have used fluorescent yarn in the past, but generally find it a challenge to remove. There are better ways, and we live to go again. Lots of precautionary gear in that bag. Bad Dad
