I remember when I was a kid I went to my friend's granddad's farm and he had a small abandoned hut in the middle of the woods. I went in there to explore and it was exceptionally tight. It was really dark and I saw that the ceiling and walls had this weird "grass" all over them. It was not grass, it was milions of these arachnids and when I touched the ceiling they all fell on me and some got into my mouth and everything.
I ran back to the house as fast as I could and I brought hundreds of them inside the house in my hair and clothes and everyone got so mad at me. Funny because after that I stopped being afraid of spiders.

Harvestmen are a gregarious bunch and form these dense, dark bunches that look almost furry from all their long legs. They can pack themselves into a surprisingly small volume which makes it even more dramatic when they are disturbed and they begin to scatter and flee, it's just a shame how fragile they are- they drop legs so easily when pinched or dragged and I feel terrible when I clumsily damage them like this. That cave has likely been a popular overwintering spot for myriad animals including all the Opiliones for the entire time it has been open to the surface (and it may have been blocked off for some periods by movement of soil or debris), the temperature is likely quite stable if somewhat cool in the lower portions year-round.

Well probably the biggest reason is because if they weren't human size we wouldn't go in. But I do think there is something about the way caves form that just happened to be in line with human body size approximately.
The same way that when it rains most water droplets are roughly the same size. Some things in nature just come out roughly about a certain size. And Cave tubes seem to be human body proportionate.

Minor correction; spiders are venomous, not poisonous.
And pretty much EVERY species of actual spider is venomous.
It just depends on if that spider has the right cocktail, the volume of venom and the physical ability/personality to deliver a bite that can harm humans.
Harvestmen are not spiders but I can see why the video creators used "spiders", as let's be honest, a den of Harvestmen (often called Daddy Longlegs) isn't going to have the same attention grab!

There are some things laymen can criticize. I saw a video just earlier of a guy going into a cave with fast flowing water in it, and all the water was basically ice cold since it was freshly melted snow. He went in this cave (that he could tell might be flooding) without a wet suit, so he wound up extremely cold and, risk of drowning aside, could've also gotten hypothermia and maybe even frostbite. He came out fine thankfully. But it's pretty clear why going into that cave in that condition was a bad idea, even if you aren't a caver.

3 questions: Are there any stories where you were stuck in a spot in a cave to the point where you needed help from someone? And have you ever gotten lost when exploring new caves in your earlier or recent adventures? Your videos are so interesting and very well narrated.

In the video “worst claustrophobic caving” one of us gets stuck and rescue was required. We plan for such events, and have all the necessary gear ready.

    Love this channel and subscribed!
I’ve got a deep fascination with caves and the overall geology of our Earth’s crust.
I find your philosophy on fear and conquering it very interesting and it caused me to be interested in human psychology.
Do you think that exploring those tight caves could actually help someone with claustrophobia… I guess you might call it “exposure therapy”…..expose yourself to what you fear until you train your brain to realize that it’s no longer as scary as you thought it was?
Yes you might have a wave of panic but you learn to ride the wave and let it come and go until your fight or flight symptoms lessen?
Sorry if that’s a strange question…..what y’all are doing is very inspiring especially the fact that you have fun doing something that would otherwise be horrifying to many ! 😅

This is one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen cartels sawing peoples heads off while they are alive or 2 girls 1 cup. You are an actual man amongst men and the definition of living for what you love. Fearless. I don’t care if the spiders can’t bite even. It’s madness. Not only in a hole smaller than you, under the earth, where you can’t move, but let’s add thousands of spiders at a time literally raining on you. Bravo. Big ol balls on this guy.

    • @billsanders9387

Fun fact: Those are creatures commonly known as ''Daddy long legs'' and they are not catalogued as spiders and don't even have fangs that can bite you so they look creepy and you wouldn't want them crawling on your body but they are safe to touch.

When you're crawling through a cave you seem to have to look up quite alot, it seems like your neck would get fatigued sooner than anything else. You must develop some incredibly strong neck muscles exploring these kinds of caves.

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  2 роки тому +4

It is fatiguing in the neck. It's not important to be strong so much as it is important to stretch out and be limber.

Those are harvestmen. Not actually spiders. They are ancient (cilurian) and found all over the world. I believe they group together to keep warm and safe from predators.
