@@doctorwarlock the video said he started with 4 due to technical difficulties - whatever that means - preventing him from starting with Episode 1. I can only assume he meant the technology to bring the amazing Jar Jar Binks to the screen didn't exist. Having seen the original Star Wars during the 1978 second summer re-releasr, I'm of the mindset that Lucas came up with prequels from original draft materials ONLY after the success of Empire. In 83 or 84, there is an interview with the original cast where they are asked if they'd do more Star Wars movies if offered. They indicated Lucas wanted to do prequels next. But I do not believe Lucas wanted to make more than one movie when Star Wars hit. It's success brought sequels. That triggered the prequel ideology as he began looking through discarded draft materials for more content. But in the end, the original 1977 Star Wars is self contained and not dependent on predecessor films to establish it. In fact, the prequels contradict the film several times. Meaning they were drafted much later with less attention to detail.
I remember reading about this in the 90’s , George Lucas choose to start with episode 4 becomes the technology required for him to create the visuals effects of the prequels trilogy hadn’t been developed yet ,so he started in the middle of the saga so that he could wait until the technology had caught up. Also , it was a good idea to start it in the middle as the politics and Bureaucracy in the prequel trilogy would of bored a lot of younger children who would of preferred to watch an action adventure film instead.
I would disagree about Lucas' wish of all 3 heroes coming back for episode 7. They were back but we never got to see all 3 on the screen together thanks to some awful story choices by JJ and Ruin Johnson.

Our city didn't have it at all the first couple or three weeks even though we had several screens sprinkled around the city. One theater played it for weeks and weeks. The markie above the entrance would say "Star Wars 12th week showing". And the number would just keep going up. Can't remember how high it got. There was no buzz at all the week before it's release. Sci fi was totally "uncool" at the time and got little attention. But when it blew up, it really blew up.
well, when you think about it... if they did the original trilogy first, then if they then do the episode 1, 2, 3 after the original trilogy... and then do 7, 8 & 9 after the first 3 episodes, it would mean the old actors from the original trilogy could be older for the new sequels. Which works and means that they don't have to get new actors which ruins the nostalgia and vibe of the whole Skywalker saga. edit: *Sorry if that sounded confusing.*

George Lucas has scripts for six movies when he started the first studio strait out turned him down they weren't going to invest in six movies. George Lucas convinced them to make three the condition to budget the other two movies rested on the success of the first movie. George Lucas decided to start the story from the middle which would latter on be called A New Hope originally it was just called Star Wars. It was much latter on after Episodes IV, V, and VI he decided to make the first three movies Episodes I, II, and III. By the time he wanted to make Episodes VII, VIII, and XIV because of his age he decided to entrust his creation to another which is why he sold Lucas Films to Disney. But of course Disney decided to do their own thing.
Over 20 years ago when I was young. I heard the rumour that six chapters were written for star wars but the reason he skipped first 3 and started with ep 4 was because the last trilogy had a more interesting story. Plus it having Darth Vader.
Because the prequels were so great? Remember Lucas had full creative control over Episodes 1 and 2 and those were a disaster. Episode 3 he finally brought in a lot of help with the script and directing to get it right. I know a lot of people have divided opinions about Episodes 7 and 8, but I liked them better than Episodes 1 and 2 of the prequel trilogy. Not saying Lucas would have done a worse or better version of the story, but some of the drafts I have heard about could have been an even bigger disaster than the prequels in terms of story and characters.
Be aware that when it first came out it didn't have 4 nor was it considered 4. It was simply Star Wars. Lucas put it in later after it was re-released. So what you say is moot and wrong (The author is meaning Lucas had decided this when it was re-released, though before that he never intended to go back for a prequel, in fact, Lucas claimed he would continue it at the Return of the Jedi onward). He never intended it to be number 4, it was later when it was re-released and he knew the series would continue that he decided to do it. Though not while filming Star Wars itself (Now known as a New Hope). 20th Century Fox was so certain it would fail that there wasn't even hope for another. Darth Vader was supposed to have died in Star Wars (Orginal) that he decided to allow Darth Vader to survive just before it was even released. Of course, when it came out in 1977, 20th Century Fox decided to allow another movie. However, before it was released there was doubt if there would be another, this is why you get the closing of being awarded medals because they wanted to be able to end movie without a cliff hanger and allow it to be a movie on its own with a closing, At 2:32 he even backs what I said above, he never says it is 4th, he simply says he decided to make it into three movies (Each movie is an act BTW). This still doesn't invalidate what I say and even suggests he didn't consider it 4th. He considered it 1st movie part of three movies. Nothing about anymore after those. So even he confirms my statements.
No one referred to it as A New Hope until maybe Episode I. I still call the first movie simply Star Wars, then Empire, then Jedi. Then the prequel trilogy, then the cash grab trilogy.
@@stuffnva Correct, he added A New Hope in the re-release of the movie later. That was my point, Lucas couldn't have considered it 4 like video and author claims because it never had it originally.
@@StacieMMeier The 1980 sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, was numbered "Episode V" in the opening crawl. I'm pretty sure he intended the previous movie to be Episode IV for quite some time before then.
I learned/knew this fact when Episode 4 was first came out back in 1977 because it was published in a brand new SciFi magazine called StarLog. My brother, then 13 years old, started getting this magazine for his birthday every single year until he left home. George Lucas gave this entire interview to that brand new magazine.
After the first Star Wars ( episode 4), the story boards for episodes 1-2-3 were released as coloring books. I remember printing them at small Toronto print shop in 1978-9.
From expected failure right to the surprising success. Anakin from slave to knight Luke from farmer to hero Rey from scavenger to warrior *Rise from the ashes* is very fitting
It’s crazy how well everything fell in place with the story!! George has stated himself that he didn’t think of Vader as Luke’s father before production of ESB. Just that ONE critical decision gave us the franchise and lore we all love. Had he NOT made that decision, than the ENTIRE saga would have played out differently! I don’t think it would be what it is today if not for the surprise reveal in ESB. Game changer.
I am not sure about that. It may be true that he may have wondered is it a good idea to go with vader being lukes father just before ESB. But there is no doubt he planned originally to have Darth Vader as the father of Luke. How do I know this? Well its simple the name he used for Lukes Father. He chose Darth Vader. Anyone who knows German knows that the German word for father is "Vater" or Vader depending how you pronounce it. George Lucas originally wanted it that way when he gave the names of the characters. Also Star wars is deeply influenced by German and Norse mythology which George Lucas as a student was studying varous cultures and countries of the world and their myths before he wrote star wars. So yeah I have no doubt he wanted originally Darth Vader to be Lukes father. After success of Star wars 1977 he wondered if it was a good idea to have this villain as the father of the hero. Would audiences buy it in the late 1970s, also if they didn't it ESB could have been a disaster for George Lucas. As it turns out audiences loved his original idea that he stuck with. Which is what Lucas gambled and said thats how I originally wrote it thats how its going to be just do it and whatever happens happens. Fortunately for Lucas ESB was a brilliant film even better than the original and Lucas became toast of the movie making world for the next 40 years as well as making Lucas a very wealthy man a multi billionaire and giant of the movie world.
Another great reason is when we found out that Darth Vader was actually Lukes father! Had we started with Episode One, we would have already known that and there would have been no surprise or tension that was revealed in the second movie (episode V). That was a lot more fun and exciting that starting off with Episode One. Brilliant. Also, R2D2 and C3P0 was a lot of fun to get to know without having to know the creation story of C3P0 in Episode One.
i was 7 when star wars came out...and i remember then Lucas saying he started with 4 because of the technology restraints..but also thought that part of the story had more action..and that's what needed to sell this first of kind movie..

Not sure if he realized, I assumed he did, but classic epics, like the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, also Paradise Lost, and El Cid, even A Tellale Heart, are all "In Medias Res." They begin in the middle of the rising action, then they jump to the exposition, early rising action, then jump past the earlier parts to the climax and resolution. I agree with above, somewhere in the mid 80s I learned Lucas had earlier parts to tell and THE three "originals" would become 4,5,6. In High School English they always used the Star Wars concept as an example of medias res. Long before episode "1" was made.
Remember how one film made Anakim look so smart in building C3PO? But it's obvious in the movies that his model was ubiquitous and that he built C3PO from a kit. :)
He never had a plan, he said Luke and leia were only made siblings because otherwise Harrison Ford wouldn’t have come back for ROTJ. He said that Luke and leia would end up together because luke was the hero, so Lucas made them siblings

By comparison, Disney's approach... ehhh just make up the movie as you go along. Let the director write the movie, scene to scene. Who cares, we'll make billions either way.
The part about Lucas not having 7, 8, and 9 done is false. 7 and 8 we're not written but 9 has been written for years. They just had to do 7 and 8 first.
I have always held this opinion. Lucas KNEW his experimental space opera would flop big. He has even STATED that the "Episode IV" hoohah was there just to give the flavor of an old-fashioned movie serial that we simply missed the first episodes of. He's just been pulling stuff out of his a$$ for decades now.
if you a first time watching of star wars you have to 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9 then watch Solo a star wars story then Rogue One a star wars story but if you seen them all then you can go 1-9 or 4-9
He didn’t. The first movie was just “Star Wars”. Lucas invented a-lot of this stuff as he went along. You really think he had in mind Leia was Lukes sister, with the kissing and love triangle. Well, I hope not
George Lucas had Alan Dean Foster write the first Star Wars spin off novel, Splinter of the Mind, as a back up idea for a TV movie should the original movie failed at the box office; it should've been adapted into a movie as well. Back in 1980 Time Magazine covered The Empire Strikes Back, and according to George then, Episodes 7-9 would've dealt with the rise of the new Republic.
It was released that way because 4,5,6, was the story George wanted to tell, then all the fans said "Cool story but how'd all this start?" So George told us with 1,2,3, then the fans said "Awesome but I wonder what happens to everyone after the defeat the empire? Do they get regular jobs and just become suburban?" So George answered that question with 7,8,9,.
1977 Star Wars was a knockoff modernization of Flash Gordon serial movies from the WWII era. He and Copella tried to get the rights, but de Larentus got them for his future project. Flash Gordon (Buster Crabbe) started with the same visual perspective crawl to explain the context. There was armored Clitus (Vader), Ming (the cruel emperor), space Nazis (space Nazis), Dr Zarkov (Obi), Dale Arden (Leia), Baron (Han), the desert planet, the ice planet, the jungle planet and sky city. Lots of sword fighting, three movies as a feature length serial, etc... The audiences were ready for this Wizard of Oz story as all 1960 born kids were familiar with the story and most had a vague Big Show memory of 30s 40s bad Science Fiction Rocketman movies.
It's true that Lucas had written a full 200 plus page script and the story got away with him, plus the first trilogy 1-3 would have cost $100 million. There was no way George could afford that kind of money back in the 70's, and he did the episode 4-6 since it was a $10 million. Not to mention he also had to create and set up his F/X studio ILM.
Started with 4 because he looked at the set-up and decided to start with Vader and Lukes story in a Hope people will want to later know how Vader and Luke started and the story behind it. If he would have started with ep 1 he knew people would not follow the story due to its stretched out story with little excitement. George told me this himself 20 years ago.
I honestly wish that episode 7-9 would never exist, disney is trying to kill off the old characters to make their own shitty ones and make it a random disney movie that has star wars elements, not an actual star wars movie

They did not follow it completely because there was a bunch of weird stuff in there about midiclorines and the Whills that Disney did not think most people would understand or want in the new movies.
why are Russian trolls commenting on SW? anyway, nothing in the new Disney SW gets approved by lucas. also, these three movies DO NOT FOLLOW the original treatment or story from lucas.

He didn’t start with episode 4, he started with Star Wars. Every story after that was an addition to it, some were sequels some were prequels
You watched the video right? He literally said that and then when the prequels happened they changed it to 4. Pay attention maybe?
Nickolas Jackson Yes, the man wrote the prequels with a pencil as he went.
Robert Petre yet ironically the prequels have the most/best action in the franchise.
Mike Richardson that is ironic
Robert Petre Ironic.
Mike Richardson maybe George Lucas wasn’t going to make the prequels action packed originally
I would disagree about Lucas' wish of all 3 heroes coming back for episode 7. They were back but we never got to see all 3 on the screen together thanks to some awful story choices by JJ and Ruin Johnson.
And Han and Luke came back as bad characters with a death not worthy of either of them.
What has rian Johnson got to do with that?
If you watch Unscripted with Hayden Christensen and George Lucas. George actually said because movies slowly build up to the action in the middle of the film George wanted to start with the action in Star Wars so he said he started it with Episode 4

rithvik11 _master When it first came out in 1977 it was hard to find theaters showing it. Our city didn't have it at all the first couple or three weeks even though we had several screens sprinkled around the city. You had to drive three hours to get to a showing, which a few people did that first week. Then since it was blowing up big time where it was showing our city did finally get it.

Ok boomer
Noah Jones I’m glad they kept on making movies, it shed more light to the Star Wars universe
No. George always said it was a 9 part series.
PhantomLegend616 I’m 19 you dumb fuck
John Enderson Jr when, everything I’ve ever seen about it said that the original trilogy was the only movies until people loved it
George Lucas has scripts for six movies when he started the first studio strait out turned him down they weren't going to invest in six movies.
George shouldn’t sell the Star Wars franchise to Disney..he should have kept it and finished telling the skywalker clans his way..
Not saying Lucas would have done a worse or better version of the story, but some of the drafts I have heard about could have been an even bigger disaster than the prequels in terms of story and characters.
i love the prequels and sequels, but they got nothing on this trilogy
However, before it was released there was doubt if there would be another, this is why you get the closing of being awarded medals because they wanted to be able to end movie without a cliff hanger and allow it to be a movie on its own with a closing,
At 2:32 he even backs what I said above, he never says it is 4th, he simply says he decided to make it into three movies (Each movie is an act BTW).
I saw the original at the Uptown in DC when it was simply "Star Wars". It was credited as the film the got the dust off of the seats in the balcony.
@@stuffnva Correct, he added A New Hope in the re-release of the movie later. That was my point, Lucas couldn't have considered it 4 like video and author claims because it never had it originally.
1981 is when he re-released it and numbered it and named it a ANH.
@@StacieMMeier The 1980 sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, was numbered "Episode V" in the opening crawl. I'm pretty sure he intended the previous movie to be Episode IV for quite some time before then.

My brother, then 13 years old, started getting this magazine for his birthday every single year until he left home. George Lucas gave this entire interview to that brand new magazine.

*Rise from the ashes* is very fitting
It’s because we didn’t get to see yoda have a saver battle so he made the prequels just for that reason
i was 7 when star wars came out...and i remember then Lucas saying he started with 4 because of the technology restraints..but also thought that part of the story had more action..and that's what needed to sell this first of kind movie..

Not sure if he realized, I assumed he did, but classic epics, like the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, also Paradise Lost, and El Cid, even A Tellale Heart, are all "In Medias Res."
They begin in the middle of the rising action, then they jump to the exposition, early rising action, then jump past the earlier parts to the climax and resolution.
I agree with above, somewhere in the mid 80s I learned Lucas had earlier parts to tell and THE three "originals" would become 4,5,6. In High School English they always used the Star Wars concept as an example of medias res. Long before episode "1" was made.

I have always held this opinion. Lucas KNEW his experimental space opera would flop big.

Disney is trying to duplicate "Star Wars " by doing THEIR version of it, throwing in Luke, Leia, Han, and the rest JUST for fans of the Original series. As far as "Rogue One" is concerned, that was a good addition to the mythos that we all know. What's NEXT? Only Disney knows!
The only problem with Episodes 7-9 for Lucas was everything.
while watching this I realized that with each of the three heroes coming back into the sequel so far one of them has died in each movie so I am going to asume that princess Leia will die in the Rise of Skywalker
