Blackmagic Production Camera 4K IN 2021!

- Well folks, heres my full, honest, and straight up thoughts on the BMPC in 2020. The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K is a BEAST. With the right conditions and circumstances, you can make this bad boy look like any RED Monstro Arri Alexa LF MINI XL TWO THOUSAND. Truth be told, this camera rocks and should definitely be considered as a lovely budget cinema camera option. The footage (like all other blackmagic cams) is so dense. so so dense. s'dense. Deep deep color in the soul of every pixel.
I filmed all of this footy on the Canon 24-105 F4. (The old L one). Let me know what y'all think about this format also. Talking head is scary and I like the idea of doing voiceovers as well.

This camera has such beautiful and natural motion blur and phenomenal colors with proper lighting. I've owned one since it's release.
One of the only affordable global shutter camera options. I've definitely thought about this guy.
Good observation. I never really considered the feature as important but have very much changed my mind after using a camera with it!
@@davinjacobs can you post a video with some global shutter shot examples with this?
This Has global shutter? It’s so old
@@Chris-ey7zy I didn't realize rolling shutters were the norm and am now realizing how privileged I was shooting on cinema cameras before the 5d mk ii broke out on the scene. I Just bought this camera too now tat Im back at shooting. Stoked for it. I cant stand the look of my pans on these rolling shutter sensors I just had to go back to what Im used to. I didn't even realize global shutter was even a term used... I always referred to them has progressive sensors. Wild world.
THE COLOR IS AMAZING!!! MORE OF THIS PLEASE!
Thank you!
One of the most relaxing and informative videos I’ve seen! I’m getting one on Monday now😂💪🏾
Haha! Awesome
In 2021 I still miss this color science
Great deal and video!
Thanks man! 🔥
Have had many cameras from APSC to Full Frame.
This camera I sought out specifically for its beautiful skin, cinematic look and dense color.
Absolut stunning with just a very basic grade.
Will never sell it.
👍🏾 You're Awesome, man! Beautiful footage! I just received a BMPCC OG, myself, and going to shoot with it today. Thanks, brother!
This BMPC 4K it’s still simply amazing 🤩
I still love this BMPC 4k, it is a beast of a camera. Thanks for sharing your perspective and best of all the clips which make this camera so vibrant. Yes I'm on the look out for one myself.
Have you used the BMPC 4k to film and have you posted on UA-cam. I recently purchased one and very excited to see what it can produce...
@@tonysluna Yes I have shot (filmed) on the BMPC 4k. Go ahead and use it no regrets at all. I was the DP on this film.
@@yuniea2670 Thanks... I had this Camera on my... "To Buy List" for a long time because.. THE GLOBAL SHUTTER.. and low price...
Also I plan to learn "Production Work"... Editing - Coloring - Story/Screen Writing... etc...
I do not see any Film on your "UA-cam Channel"...

@@yuniea2670 Thanks for sharing. I can see Samples of Film used with BMPC 4k... Great✌✌👌👌
i agree 100% its a wonderful camera , specially for short film , colors are good footage looks and feel very organic
Right? It seems like it’s been pretty much forgotten about
@@davinjacobs yes and its good think, if we still have the spot on it, its will be more expensive ;)
Hahaha good point my friend 😂
@@davinjacobs the problem is the low light but in this kind of situation i shot in RAW4K as you can see in this video :ua-cam.com/video/HLzRylEYOng/v-deo.html
with f2.8 Tamron 17-55 lens
Oh yeah big time. But in this you did awesome at exposing for the highlights instead of trying to boost the shadows. Nicely done
Still using mine in 2023.
🙂Thanks your sharing ! can you show me the night time recording resolution, especial noise etc...
Great video! The colors are unbeatable. Thinking about getting the pocket 4k and the production 4k to have a well rounded setup. but the production 4k has the best colors and picture from what ive seen on the tube and vimeo
The image is definitely amazing and has quite the look to it. You can’t go wrong with either one tho tbh 🤷♂️
The ursa mini 4k has the same sensor and better frame rates so is also definately a good consideration.
I love this design. I saw some for a good price. I may get one.
I've kept mine for the global shutter. I'd love a Komodo but just can't justify the cost. Going to look to see if it might work with Raveneye. Thanks for sharing I kind of like the voice over. Although you've had a year and half to get answers to that question.
I've one and its easy to use, did I mention it has very good quality.
relevant till today
Great camera, still use mine all the time.
This footage looks fantastic!
Thank you!
Excellent. I still have mine. Your VO sounds good. I tend to prefer more natural sounds to music though your music here is very good. Be well.
Thanks friend
I'd love to get into Cinematography. I shoot with an iphone 12 pro max, GoPro Hero 10 and a Canon m100 with a 22mm Prime lens.
great video, relaxed and informative. i like the VO style but it depends on the topic. generally i like to see images with whats been said.
Thanks
I still have mine 9 years now. Would love someone to modify jacks to XLR with pot controls. Blackmagic should have made an update model with 4K up to 60P. And a HDMI port.
Great footage and review nan! I was gonna trade it for the Ursa Mini but naaah, this produces just as good a image.
Agreed! It’s a little finicky but the image is lovely
@@davinjacobs In my opinion Blackmagic made a mistake in not making all their cameras use SSD Drives. It's affordable and practical for the indie filmmaker, which is where their market basically is.
@@filmdriven you can’t beat em for the price that’s for sure. I use cfast cards on my pocket 6K pro and they’re so ungodly expensive.
Amazing video thank you ❤️💯💯
No prob!
This camera is amazing and I know it's a black sheep camera but it's an amazing camera.
Totally. I love it!
Wow !
Great video. I own one too. You can power the camera with that 12volt smallcam charger?? I thought that this camera only excepted 14volt.
It works, but not as efficiently as it could with a 14v battery. The NPF’s die a lot faster than they would if they were the bigger BPU batteries. If I were to recommend anything differently, it would be to power this camera using the BPU a batteries and the BPU battery plate. Thanks for the compliments though!
Great video!
I got this camera last year for about £500 in an ebay auction
What do you think is some gear thats necessary for using this camera at minimum? I defo wanna get an external monitor coz the monitor on this is terrible but also I need a good external battery and a bunch of ssds
Wow great deal! 500 is a steal. Personally I don’t mind the monitor so much. It’s only bad outside and if you’re not in direct sun it’s not too bad. For me I use an npf battery plate and a 2.5mm dc cable on both ends into the camera for power. The camera requires 12v out, the npf’s are only 7.4. So you don’t get as much time out of them but that typically is all I use. You could use a rode mic too with a 1/4 inch adapter for a decent scratch track
Sigma lens 17-55mm/2.8 for ASPC sensor (S35mm), any Cage with rods supporting follow focus, audio A-Box from Wooden Camera, etc
Gorgeous footage. Did not know they were S35. Am I the only seeing dark frames injected at a consistent interval (on this clip)?
A cam. BMCC 2.5k + B cam. BMPC 4k - that is how I use it.
Great setup.
@@davinjacobs Yeah, quality of the image from BMCC 2.5k can not be replaced by BMPC 4k.
@@_arturjutkowiak_film certainly. It has quite a look to it that is hard to replace if that’s what you are looking for
@sonbasi Check my YT channel, compare BMCC to BMPC and share your opinion.
@sonbasi I said the 2.5K has it’s own look, which it certainly does. Not that it has better quality.
Stunning videos. Can we use this for continual shooting 2 hrs with Power supply and additional battery for church live purposes. Is it possible? Heating issues
I would be weary using an older camera like this for a 2hr continuous recording. Its definitely capable, but the electronics are certainly not that reliable like they once were
Thanks for this. I've liked and subscribed. Really interested in the global shutter! I might pick one of these up used from Ebay.
Awesome. Thanks for support 🤝
@@davinjacobs just wondering if you're thinking of getting the 2.5K Production camera too? No global shutter but better dynamic range and if you can get it in MFT which is rare then it's more versatile
@@MichaelGreenwoodMG I’ve owned one in the past. Was a great camera but was limiting for the type of work I do which is mostly run and gun
@@davinjacobs that's great. I would to see a video of your post production process in producing this video. From you applying the LUT to using Film Convert.
@@MichaelGreenwoodMG thanks mate. Haven’t had much time to make videos but I think once winter rolls around I’ll get back to it.
The Prores HQ is 10 bit or just 8 bit? I can't find that info. Thx
Pro res is 10 bit
hmmm, i swear I've been to some of these metroparks areas. in fact, i think i canoed under that bridge. are you in the cleveland/rocky river/north olmsted area? great footage. I'm shopping around for an og bmpcc, but have seen a few of these on the market, so I'm trying to learn what else is around these days.
Yes! Haha
Great video, amazing colors. You said you own the BMCC 2.5K as well? How do you think the Production 4K stands up to the 2.5K?
Thanks! I don’t own it anymore but I did! I think it’s far superior in everything except for dynamic range. But both cameras have a ton of dynamic range. The 4K is so much better because of the larger sensor.
@@davinjacobs Ah yes, and that global shutter...
@@Macbain80 exactly. It’s pretty awesome for the price!
I had one of these but recently replaced it. Love the colours in your film. Did you grade them, use a LUT, or straight 709 video setting out of camera?
Used the blackmagic film to rec709 lut in davinci and then used filmconvert to grade
Nice video
Thank you!
Terrific video - do you still have it - are you still using it? I'm thinking of getting one. Any major drawbacks? Any regrets?
Not anymore, but the biggest drawback that I found was the form factor and size. It’s clunky!
Hehe, good video, I just dusted off my camera that I had forgotten in a closet and decided to record some scenes on this camera. The truth is that I'm checking the material and I was quite surprised, recording in low light with a 50mm 1.4 and it looks pretty good. The truth is I am only a little concerned about the issue of disk space, which is too much. Do you know if there is some magic latern hack to compress the 4k more and to reach 1600 ISO?
Glad to hear it! But I don’t know of any hacks. Sorry /: I think if you wanted to shoot in 4kpro res LT instead of Hq that will significantly reduce storage with minimal loss in quality. If you wanted to save even more, you could shoot that same codec in HD
@@davinjacobs Thaks so much bro. I will share soon my footage.
@@fundacionmauan sweet! I’d love to check it out. This camera is so slept on haha
Voice over the footage is best. Also.. have u tried shooting this camera at is 1600 in daylight? When I do the same with my 2.5k the highlight roll off gets smoother.
I haven’t but I’ll have to give that a shot. Seems like it could be quite noisy though
Should the ISO setting while shooting even matter in RAW though?
@@GearZenChannel honestly no but it still feels like a risk not getting it close in camera
@@davinjacobs Yeah I get it. I am shooting the 2.5k. I set the zebras to 95-100% and then pull back until they disappear. It almost feels like cheating.
@@GearZenChannel yes. Raw has limits its just very flexible. Iso 200-400 have zero noise, stronge deep dark blacks but highlights clip. Iso 800 the blask are not as strong but very good but highlight rolloff is smooth.,,
Iso 1600 blacks are grainy... Highlight rolloff gets even smoother.
If u have a pocket 4k shoot iso 1000. The dynamic range. Shifts towards highlights there and the rollofff is super smooth. Blacks have little noise.
Hi Davin, I like your style of shooting, maybe you can help find me the lens Tokina 16-50/2.8 with CanonEF mount?
Just got mines last week too lol. Are you going to rig yours up?
I’ll probably keep it relatively stripped down. I have the cage and a battery and I’ll probably just keep it at that!
I've had this camera for about a year now. Got it on OfferUp for $700. I've also only had a battery on a cheese plate! Oh and I adhered a black shirt to the little hood around the monitor so when I snap that thing on the shirt goes on with it. Throw it over your head and voila, a somewhat easy fix to those bright outdoor shots.
Haha that’s awesome!
Does anybody have the small rig battery plate linked to Amazon for this?
I have one. I just need a cage like yours.
Hard to find outside of full kits, that’s how I got mine
@@davinjacobs There's a guy selling one. I'm waiting for his confirmation.
@@davinjacobs can you share the link to your full kit
Fairchild sensor?
Those sample clips are they straight from the camera or graded? Thanks
excellent video. I'm in Brazil and I'm going to buy a Production4k soon. I produce short music videos.
Awesome! Should work nicely for you!
Hola te consulto, mi bateria dura muy poco, tengo una 2.5 k. Se puede usar la camara y grabar mientras este enchufada el cargador a la corriente? .
I have the same cage but what tool do i use to take the 4 small screws on top?
Allen wrench
can you paste th/e link to for the cage kit
no link for this kit anymore you have to find secondhand on eBay
Hey! I'm looking forward to buy my first camera! it's either bmpc 4k with 2 ssds, but it seems like the cages are really hard to find almost impossible, any other ideas how to rig it? Or I can get for the same price the bmcc with a cage but less memory. I am really between those 2 and can't decide. Any help would be really appreciated.
I’d go with the 4K version over the original! Cage isn’t really necessary in my opinion. As long as you can find a decent battery solution you should be good to go
Hi.I have a question...how can i make pictures BMCC?
what is the ac input plugg size for this camera i have one myself but i do not know what the jack size needs to be
I want to get one but it’s out of stocks can you help me out please
Check out eBay. You will need to buy one second hand
Hello, i have one with EF MOUNT, simoly amazing...just notice that the autofcus is very slow compared it with the same canon lens on a canon dslr camera...it’s normal?
Definitely normal. These cameras are meant to be used with manual focus. I would try to nail down manual focus instead of using AF with this camera
@@davinjacobs thanks...a last question...how can i have a live view of this BMPC4K .. Ultrascope (or others BM utilities( seems not detect camera directly connect trough USB or Thunderbolt
What type of battery is compatible with this camera ??
I use BPU batteries with a bpu plate that connects into the 12v in on the camera
just picked one up. Can anyone recommend a lens that would work for amateur/hobby film ?
Highly recommend the canon 24-105 F4 OIS lens. That’s what all of this is filmed using
and the sigma art zooms are pretty great too - i use the 18-35 1.8 with my bmpc 4k
The Sigma art 24-105mm is better suited for video. The Canon 24-105 is better for still photography.
where did you get the metal rig? i cant find any affordable around!!!
It came with the camera as a kit. Not sure it’s really necessary though if you can find a cheese plate to go on top of the camera
Have you had any difficulties finding gear?
I just got mine and can’t find anything as far as rigs specific to the camera
I want to buy one two but can't find SSD for it I mean recommended
Would you recommend it for Live-Streaming?
Hi there, not too familiar with live streaming. I would say that there are probably better and simpler options out there. It seems like something in the mirrorless world would be better suited for streaming
@@davinjacobs thanks!
to loud music and to low mic !!
how do i slowmo Production 4k clips?
you need to shoot at higher frame rate, currently this camera does not do that
Where can l get an SSD memory card for this camera, any recommendations?
Try ebay
Why are you filming with a full-frame lens (twice bigger) than S35sensor?
Thanks! The camera is super 35 so I think it’s about a 1.6x crop relative to full frame. It’s all relative but it’s no where near as bad as MFT sensors. Super 35 was pretty much the cinema standard for a long time so I’m totally happy enough with s35
1.6 is not little/small. Why not using lenses without crapping, like Sigma for Canon 7D (half-frame sensor )?
@@4tcfilm well you’re limited to what the sensor is capable of. I’m limited to super 35 because the sensor is super 35 sized. Not sure what you mean exactly, sorry
Also this is an EF camera so I use EF lenses or adapted lenses. I use the canon 24-105 a lot.
Your lens 24-104 after crap became: 38-168. Did you try wide angle shoots??
Anyone have trouble with their camera saying no SSD when there is one loaded in? Just got an extreme sandisk pro 240g SSD and having issues if anyone can help me please lol
Not sure if I’ve encountered that problem. Sorry man.
Это не тест!

Definitely not $90 🤣
@@davinjacobs I listened again on better speaker. He enunciates is quite indistinctly and quickly ..but on third time listening its 900$ he's saying! makes more sense
Can it do lower frame rates like 22fps ?
not sure tbh
do you think it's better than an iPhone 12 Pro Max 4?
Very different video capabilities for very different use cases. not comparable
Ohio? 😱😱😱
Yup. Lol
the lack of antything more than 30 fps is a huggggge negative
It is - but I view this as more of a camera for narrative work so it’s not the biggest deal to me

Video space is hardcore, hell, unlike stills area, you can find decades old setup that shoot seriously good pictures, the price is depreciated worthless, but video space tho, it is tough, video gear is the only area that is actually improving, and you usually need the latest to get the best codec and format, because data per sec is the real challenge if you want to shoot videos. Latest mean premium, it is insanely costly, like the top of the line Sony CineAlta camera, body cost more than a supercar, only for you to get 444 raw 12bit slow-motion 8k.
It all make this brick camera special, the price I can find on used market for this kind of image quality, it is super for documentary and interview, places you can get away without slow motion.
Video space is hardcore - thats a great way of putting it. Totally agree mate
