      Maybe because it only works for jello caused by the camera accelerating and the rest of the world staying still. If anything else moves, like cars or animals or kids or even a whole scenery shot from a moving vehicle, that will still be all distorted.
      But sure, this feature is very nice for correcting static scenes shot by drunk cameramen on galloping horses.

    Great, that this knowledge gets out there! 😊
    One thing to note (which made me screaming at my computer in the beginning until I learned): all electronic stabilization on the lens MUST be turned OFF (e.g. Canon‘s IS or Panasonic‘s OIS). Otherwise the camera won’t record proper gyro metadata and you won’t be able to use the gyro stabilization method inside of Resolve…
    Edit: Gyro stabilization only works with BRAW, not ProRes.

    • @TaylorPassofaro
      @TaylorPassofaro 11 місяців тому +6

      For anyone reading this who has a Sony camera with gyro stabilization (and can stabilize using the Gyroflow OFX plugin right in Resolve) this also means you need to have IBIS turned off in addition to any optical lens based stabilization. The gyro data needs to captures *every* movement, and if IBIS or Lens IS is doing a bit of stabilization, the gyro can't capture that and instead those "corrections" will instead turn into shakes in the footage.

I even went to a Blackmagic event where they were showcasing the BMCC6K and I talked at length with the BM reps about the new camera and how everything about it is SO GOOD, but the rolling shutter performance kills it for me. They didn't mention this feature at all despite us going through the different technical details multiple times.
    I'm 97% sure I will still stick with my P4K for the foreseeable future due to smaller file sizes vs. C6K, but this video of yours just opened my eyes to the absolute gigabrain side of Blackmagic's thinking. WTAF Blackmagic? Why would this not be a feature? Rolling shutter is one of the biggest complaints I've both made and heard about the pockets. This should be a check box on the Inspector. A "Global Shutter" checkbox would help their sales. I don't get how they can be so good at things like creating a 12k camera and a Hollywood-changing software....yet at the same time do things like ignore their customers and not tell us that we can make their cameras much better than they are this simply. Mind = blown. Thank you so much for pointing this out. I MAY not sell my camera now.

    • @DiodeFilms
      @DiodeFilms  11 місяців тому +3

      Well it's not really global shutter. This trick only corrects artifacts as a result of the camera movement itself, as I mention in the video. Flickering lights will still zebra, and if you point it out of a car window you'll still get slanted lampposts etc.

    I have heard of this benefit in using the Gyro Data maybe once before, but for the most part it’s a feature which has gotten lost. I’m glad to see someone take the time to so clearly demonstrate how this works. Thank you. At the same time, it’s interesting to see how much of the frame gets lost in the fixing-particularly when the camera moves in the vertical axis. Those black bars are huge. Despite the magic, in many cases where you only need to cover a handful of quick camera moves (particularly in long takes), perhaps an adjustment clip over the offending frames with a bit of directional blur feathered in would cover the problem almost as well, and not require losing so much of the frame area when the camera is still. Stabilization will crop to cover the worst offending maneuver in any given clip which could really throw off your framing for most of the take.

    • @DiodeFilms
      @DiodeFilms  11 місяців тому +2

      It's more small little wobbly jitters in handheld footage that I'm bothered by, which should require a much less significant crop. If I were doing something like a whip-pan, I wouldn't be too bothered by the rolling shutter because everything's blurred.
      Besides, if you were shooting action with something like the new full frame blackmagic 6k, my solution to reduce rolling shutter would have been to crop into s35 anyway, but instead I can just shoot the full sensor with the expectation of cropping significantly later. It does suck with a small sensor camera like the pocket 4k though...

    Now this is interesting. I did have some thoughts when they did announce the gyro stabilize feature, that the camera movement data should be able to be used for fairly accurate rolling shutter compensation. I am fairly certain I mentioned it in the Blackmagic Forums as well... Though, I didn't think of looking in the color tab for options that would let me test it without the overall stabilizing. That is a great find!
    And yes. There are cases where it wouldn't help. For instance, I am fairly certain it only records one motion vector per frame so it can only deal with straight squash and skews. If you hard mount the camera to a vibrating surface, for example. Where the camera moves erratically in tiny amounts multiple times per frame, the worst form of the jello effect, that would need multiple datapoints per frame. Also, it only deals with motion that the camera does. If the talent turns head quickly for example. The eyes will be recorded as turning before the rest of the mouth. The camera gyro has no clue about that. And if you pan with a subject moving quickly across a background, the gyro stabilizing can probably correct the overall skew, but while you get a corrected background, you instead get a skewed subject.
    So I do think they should break out this feature into its own plugin and call it something like "Gyro enhanced Rolling Shutter Reduction". It's not a full fix for rolling shutter. But as you say. It takes care of a lot of the cases where you actually notice it (vibrating hardmounts notwithstanding)

    Wow. I never knew that gyro stabilization could do that. Blackmagic has the worst marketers ever! Everyone should know about this.

    I just got to know about it as you made this video!! Thanks alot. I was having the same issue on chosing which camera due to this rolling shutter issue of BMD cameras

  • @StMediaNL

    That is super cool. However, if your camera is on a tripod (or not moving much) and a vehicles pass, they will get the rolling shutter and won't get corrected. So it's a partly fix that comes with an intense crop. Still, good to know!

    Great video! I’ve subscribed :)
    This is great news! I’ve wanted a Blackmagic camera and this was one of the things holding me back, should pair nicely with an X-H2s I think. I just wouldn’t know which to use as the A Cam lol.

    Unfortunately I don’t have this new feature on my camera since I have the original Ursa Mini 4.6K. The sensor readout speed on the 4.6K is 15.17 milliseconds so it’s a bit faster then the pockets and I never really had an issue with the rolling shutter effect on my images which is apparent if you really give it a good jostle. It just irks me that they took the global shutter out of the mini 4.6K like they had in the original mini 4K. I guess having 15+ stops of dynamic range was a better trade off to some. And also I can still brag about having Cinema DNG RAW. I’d take that over B RAW any day of the week. It isn’t RAW if there’s ANY post processing in camera but that’s off topic and up for debate if anyone wants to argue with me on that.

    Try gyroflow, it's now integrated as an OFX Davinci effet. Best gyro stab, and has some more detailed settings regarding what you aiming to fix !

      I thought gyroflow is what they're using for the built in stabilizer?
      I'll look into the OFX. I did wonder about situations where you might want to reduce how much correction there is for rolling shutter, like maybe if the crop is too much for you? 99% of the time I can't see me needing more specific control than this though.

      I'm totally agreeing with you on this. Just found out about gyroflow being avaible as a plug in for Davinci for free, like 10 days ago.
      It did wonders with Sony FX6 natively without Catalys Browse also ! Pretty sure it can be tweaked for RS with the Pocket ;)@@DiodeFilms

    I think most people don’t care about this feature because when you need to shoot something with that much movement/shake, you just use the appropriate tool for the job. When you don’t you can use your Blackmagic. That’s how i see it anyway. Not locked to a brand or model because i own it
