This video saved me. As a severely disabled elder i was devastated when my truck wouldn't start, especially in winter. Without it, I can't survive because I cannot walk and no one in America is going to give you a ride, even if they are going that way. I still don't know why it won't turn over but this trick got her started. Thanks much.
Our pleasure. Thanks so much for commenting.
Wish I could be your neighbor man. The we take care of our older folk around here. Whatever they need.
These are the videos and UA-camrs that deserve millions of views and subscribers. You saved money and a huge headache thank you so much.

@@daddydiysolutions You're very welcome my friend.
I've got that exact problem. Thanks for the tip! Way cheaper than $140+labor... Less damaging and risky than hot wiring it!
My pleasure! Thank you.
3 months later. Still "fixed".
Did this to my dads 94 f150 4 years ago, he still starts it like this 😂
😆
Bought my truck like that and still start it the same way 😂
Man this video was a life saver!!! Thank you so damn much for keeping it quick and to the point rather than talking about your whole life story and taking half an hour to explain the problem like so many other mechanic videos on here. My battery was stuck running with the switch not working so I was pressed on time to fix the problem, this did the trick!
Also make sure you don't push the ignition to far back when turning it off it moves it into accessory mode and will drain your battery
I couldn't find it at first... Why I expected it to be kind of loose in SMH, but what a save my dude! We are a one van plumbing company and it just wouldn't turn off yesterday out of nowhere. I'm a plumber and not a mechanic so I was completely lost... I pulled the fuel pump fuse to turn it off, and then got up underneath there and I did those two T30 torx screws... Just like you showed...
It'll get me by for the day until my switch comes in.
Thank you so much.
My pleasure. Appreciate you!
Boom! I was stranded in my driveway then I watched your video
Thanks for the update! Glad we could help!
Replaced everything in my 04 Freestar except this switch. It randomly wouldn't start & left me stuck in my driveway. After 3 days of warm weather it started just fine.
Went & bought one of these and put it on my passenger seat.
It was starting just fine for 2wks now, until it snowed. going to try this today!
Thanks this is the only video that explains this trick and the switch 🥳
My pleasure. Thanks a bunch for watching and commenting.
not all hero’s wear capes
My pleasure. Appreciate you!
Thanks for this. My 96 Taurus had this issue
I hope this will work for me. I will try it tomorrow.
Thanks a million
Worked perfectly for my 96 mustang gt. There's 2 8mms to disconnect to remove the metal plate covering underneath the steering column and two T30 torx screws hold the switch in place. After that, it started right up. It didn't want to go into gear at first, but rotating the key in the cylinder fixed that. Had this problem once before due to the metal pin on the ignition switch actuator inside the steering column falling out. I suspect it's the same thing again but I can't be bothered to rip the thing apart just yet. Anyone with a 96-98 mustang ought to be good with this since they use a lot of the same parts. Great vid!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing the additional information.
Thank you. Im replacing my old girls ignition cylinder AGAIN with something quality, finally. I needed this for now
My pleasure. Glad it helped.
Appreciate you! Just got ripped off at the dealership. Had my truck for over a month saying they couldn’t get the ignition out safely to get my car inside to service it. I told them I could have taken it to the hood and gotten faster service. Thank you for confirming it should not have taken as long as it did nor at the cost it did!
Glad to help! Sorry about the situation with the dealership.
Dude thank you for this post it saved me so much time figuring out why my key wasn’t doing anything

I used this method once only to fund that it was PATS system that was malfunctioning. Yep, that one cost a little extra due to being out in a freshly plowed field.

@@daddydiysolutionsHey my man would this work on a 95 ford escort wagon???
As long as the vehicle has a mechanical ignition switch like the one shown in the video, it should work. Thanks for stopping by the channel.

EXCELLENT Video!! I was just trying to explain to my friend how I used to do this to my E150. Thanks!!
Thanks! Glad it helped!
Does it have to be the actual key for the vehicle or could you use another key from ford with a chip in it from a relatively close model
Has to be the actual key for the vehicle. The keys are programmed to the specific vehicle in attempt to prevent them from being stolen. Thanks for commenting and stopping by the channel!

Will my 2004 Ford expedition look like this under
Your vehicle might have a different type of ignition switch. You could look it up in a parts catalog just to be sure.
Mine is stuck in park. Itll start in neutral tho. If i turn the key half way without touching the brake, itll let me move the shifter into neutral.
Mine starts without the key in lol I just had to rig my truck up like this today
I have a Ford F-150 2001, in order to pull off that bottom panel you would need to totally unbolt everything to do that you can't just pull that off, I'm not sure the type of for you have maybe and that make you can do that.
I had to remove the entire bottom part of the console. You can see all the details of the removal in this video: ua-cam.com/video/7_C8AyThzqs/v-deo.html
I'm having to do this with my ranger because my key cylinder won't turn backwards (to accessories ). And I'm never completely sure if it's even properly in the off position and i don't want to be draining my battery every day. Not sure if i need a new key cylinder or if accuator inside steering column is the problem.
Yep. I used a marker to mark my ignition switch as a reminder to where the off position is. I’ve been using this hack for almost a year now.
Do you think my problem is the key cylinder or the actuator rod in the column?
Take a look at this video where I go into more detail.
ua-cam.com/video/X-C2a-y2LUc/v-deo.html
You’ll see it’s clear my the steering linkage (actuator rod) in my steering column is broken and can be easily moved with a screwdriver. It’s supposed to be linked internally to the ignition lock cylinder. If your steering column’s linkage/actuator is behaving like mine in the video, it could be your problem.
Got a 2003 F250 with column shifter without a chipped key. I’m guessing you just leave the key in ON position to be able to shift in/out of PARK, N, D, etc…
You’ll have to give it a try. The linkage between my steering column and ignition lock cylinder is my issue. I’m able to move the column shifter without my key being in the ON position. Thanks a bunch for stopping by the channel.
@@daddydiysolutions yeah I’m thinking my link arm from lock cylinder to ignition box has too much play and isn’t closing the circuit. Even the hole that the switch arm goes in has noticeable enough play as well.
I watched this video (linked below) to get an idea how to change out the link arm assembly but OMG that is a serious job requiring more attention that I can muster right now. I was impressed enough with myself for changing out the shifter tube and brackets.
ua-cam.com/video/HvV1x8odxl0/v-deo.htmlsi=KtFTtZ6XpiG-89uH
For anyone else that comes across this comment thread if your linkage is ok I’ve been told other possible fixes include swapping out those big ice cube relays for your starter/solenoid or other fuses related to your ignition/starter.
But this hack re bypassing the link arm and going straight to the box is next level dude!
My pleasure. Glad to help. Yeah, going into my steering column is not something I want to tackle right now. Here's a link to a video where I go into more detail about the hack and the issue with my steering column. ua-cam.com/video/X-C2a-y2LUc/v-deo.html
Thanks again. Appreciate you!
You just saved my ass love you bro!!!!
Glad I could help! Thanks for stopping by the channel.
I had many early 90 f150s that didn't even need a key. Just turn and go. I lost my keys and got pulled over once. The cop was convinced I stole it for a good 10 minutes
Thanks.
My pleasure!
Super helpful! Thank you! 🙏
My pleasure. You're so welcome!
So have u tried changing the ignition cylinder thing..?
My issue is with my steering column. This video goes into more details on what the issue is ua-cam.com/video/X-C2a-y2LUc/v-deo.htmlsi=rboSMo4NawfjcY9y.
Thank you
My pleasure!
Thanks, this tip is gonna let me move into some shade so I can get to the “fun” job of replacing that broken plunger/ rod son of a beeeotch
My pleasure. Let me know how it turns out. I’m trying to get motivated to do this repair myself. Been driving around for over a year using the hack.
This worked for me sort of. Ignition moves now and it cranks but it just cranks and cranks and doesn’t start. At I missing something? It acts like it’s not getting fuel. I even put a couple gallons in it and it just won’t start. Just cranks.
I suggest you check out this video. Shows the steps I’m taking to troubleshoot a fuel-related crank no start with Expedition.
ua-cam.com/video/JtXf-5zxc7E/v-deo.htmlsi=JzPOhOidD_t1_DnL
Mind was working with that starter switch. But now won’t start when it should at the end
A quick test you can do is to see if power is leaving the switch when it’s in the start position. I show how to do this test in this a video: ua-cam.com/video/ZI1n4JEoLg4/v-deo.htmlsi=gWGFoLsLXUzdInSq
This works on my 2007 F550.. But how do i get the ignition lock cylinder out??? It needs to be put in the run position to be able to remove it. I HAVE WATCHED ALL OF THE VIDEOS ON REMOVING IT AND THE ALL SAY THE KEY MUS TURN TO THE ON POSITION. And my key is also stuck in the cylinder. Steering wheel moves freely and the shifter works.
Like you said, the ignition lock cylinder needs to be in the 12 o’clock position to be removed. Sounds like it’s frozen (won’t move) and the key is stuck as well. If the key wasn’t in there you could drill it out stepping up from a small to larger bits until the ignition lock cylinder can move to the 12 o’clock position. If it were me, I’d try everything I could to get the key out first. If the key can’t come out, I’d try to use the drill and some bits to remove the key and then rotate the ignition lock cylinder.
do this work for a 98 vic?? cause this exact problem is stopped me from starting my car after i just swapped the motor an transmission
It might work on that 98 vic. Ford used the same ignition switch across a wide range of models and years. Just double check your ignition switch.
Your a legend
i bought a 98 f150 a couple of weeks ago and my ignition is frozen, won't move AT ALL.
I'm really hoping i can make this tip work..... literally everything is riding on this
I hope it works for you.
This helped by pass the switch, but now the truck won’t shift out of parked.
When it started running, the doors locked, almost like it was in gear. Any advice for what to check next?
Try to jiggle the ignition lock cylinder. There’s usually an internal linkage between the gear selector and ignition lock cylinder.
My ignition is loose but it turns the engine on but doesn’t turn the electric off after I take the key out thanks
Sounds like you might have an issue with your vehicle's ignition system. Check out this playlist I have dedicated to testing and diagnosing ignition issues. ua-cam.com/play/PLCBzxUl4oqBgT3Nz0BydDcHSBuOsyd3Jh.html
@@daddydiysolutions Thank You, my car was in neutral
Will this work with a 1992 ford ranger you think?
I recently was out of town, came back and realized somebody had tried stealing my truck. The dip shit left a broken screw driver lodged in the column and a still on flashlight on the seat. No idea how long it’d been like this.
Sorry to hear about that. Check to see if your ignition switch is like the one in the video. If so, it might work. If you need help on locating the ignition switch, check out my other videos.
Ok so how do you get it to go in gear without the key turned forward because mine won't
Thank you for sharing!!!!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
What is the repair/replacement to use the key like normal
I go into more details in this video:
How to Start a Ford with Broken Ignition Lock Cylinder Key Won’t Turn | DIY
ua-cam.com/video/X-C2a-y2LUc/v-deo.html
Ultimately, the fix for me will probably be to replace the steering column if I can’t fix the linkage.
Is gonna be able to go in drive
It does for me. Been driving around awhile using this hack.
My ignition cylinder won't turn or let go of my key. I'm able to get my truck started this way, but the column shifter won't physically get past park. The lever for 4x4 won't budge either. After a lot of fiddling (so I'm not sure what exactly did it) but I can now get the shifter in to reverse, but nothing more. Any advice? 98 f150
Sounds like there might be multiple issues inside your steering column. If you can’t pinpoint the stove of issues, you might have to replace the entire column. You can check eBay and salvage yards to get a feel for prices.
I just came on here because my brother has a 96 f150 he drives and uses for a fieldf truck without the key I'm guessing since the Tumbler may be bad. I decided to use this truck tonight and turned it all the way back and herer it locked and now I can't move it. Last time I asked him how do you get this truck in gear and he said underneath the headlamp switch there's two wires so touch them together and it will go in gear. It must be some sort of bypass so your vehicle is able to go in gear and you can drive it. I'm going back out in the field tomorrow to see if I can get this thing started but I can look to see what wires I was touching for it to go in gear and let you know if that will help you for your situation
I'm thinking some sort of neutral bypass or something
Yep, that’s what it sounds like…sending power to neutral safety switch and then the starter relay.
My truck is stuck in "on" and the key isn't engaging to turn it back to off. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks.
I suggest you check to see what type of ignition switch is equipped on your vehicle. If you have a mechanical ignition switch (like the one in the video), you can manipulate it by hand to turn the vehicle "off" without using the key or ignition lock cylinder. I go into more details in these two videos:
ua-cam.com/video/X-C2a-y2LUc/v-deo.html

@@daddydiysolutions Thank you! I was able to use the ignition switch to turn it off just like you said!
Great info!! Thank you for the info!!
My pleasure! Thanks for stopping by the channel.
So my car still did not start using this, should I try replacing it or should I go down a different avenue?
If you’ve got a no start-no crank, I’d suggest using a test light or multimeter to make sure the ignition switch is outputting power to the starter relay when the switch is in the start position. I perform this test in the video below:
ua-cam.com/video/ZI1n4JEoLg4/v-deo.htmlsi=DQ_5BK9092AOAITE
ua-cam.com/video/ZI1n4JEoLg4/v-deo.htmlsi=DQ_5BK9092AOAITE

What if I don't have the key
It depends on whether or not your vehicle is equipped with the PATS system. This video goes into a bit more detail: ua-cam.com/video/X-C2a-y2LUc/v-deo.html
Would this pass a safety?
It’s really intended to be a short-term solution until you can get the issue fixed.
Will the steering wheel unlock when using the Ignition switch to start the truck ?
My steering wheel is unlocked and I don’t turn my key. If yours is locked, you might be able to unlock it by jiggling the key in the ignition while turning the steering wheel. Thanks for stopping by the channel.
@@daddydiysolutionsI lost my keys . 97 model idk if it has a chip the key I do have was a copy.silver😊
Okay. Got it.
What is the name of this particular component? I have a 2004 mustang and it’s stuck in accessory mode like that metal rod isn’t making contact with what’s above it
I'm not sure about the official name. I think you're experiencing the same issue I had. The metal rod on my ignition switch wasn't making good contact with the "linkage" above it that is controlled by the ignition lock cylinder and was making my vehicle do some weird things electrically. Check out the full-length video I just released that goes into more details on my issue: ua-cam.com/video/X-C2a-y2LUc/v-deo.html. Thanks!

So I replaced my starter and solenoid on my truck but the starter keeps engaging the mechanic said that this could be the problem
It won’t hurt to give this a try.
When I turn the key sometimes I get no reaction
Yep, I’d probably test to make sure you’ve got power leaving your ignition switch going to the starter relay. Take a look at this video for more information:

It depends on what type of ignition switch it has. Need to check to see if it has a mechanical switch like the one shown in the video.
Does this work for 2006 mountaineer
It depends on what type of ignition switch you have. You’ll need to check and see if you have this type of ignition switch. It will be obvious because these types of switches are mounted underneath the steering column.
Thanks bro

Work for a 97 ranger?
It might work. Just double check what type of ignition switch it has. Here's a video we did on how to remove the ignition switch: ua-cam.com/video/7_C8AyThzqs/v-deo.html. Thanks.
@@daddydiysolutions it looks to be the same type of switch. I'm going to give it a try when I get the time. Thanks for answering back!
I was looking for that on my towncar and didn’t see it, I guess the towncars don’t have them

I just looked it up. It looks like your 03 towncar uses the same style ignition switch as the one in the video. Might want to double check the steering column. If you need more help locating it, I’ve got a full length video where I locate and remove the switch step-by-step.

How do you get the car to fully shut off tho?
Just slide the switch to the off position as shown in the video. It’s the same thing as turning your key to the off position.
We're are fuse box inside truc.
The fuse box inside the vehicle is on the driver side under the dashboard to the left. There's also another fuse box under the hood on the driver side.
Can you do that on the 03 F250 Super Duty 5.4's
Should work. As long as it uses the same type of ignition switch. Thanks.
@@daddydiysolutions would that be located beside the fuse box or do you know ?
On my 2000 Expedition it's right underneath the steering wheel. Here's a link to the full length video showing the exact location. ua-cam.com/video/7_C8AyThzqs/v-deo.html. Hope it helps.
Will this work for an 2005 infinity?
You’re probably going to have to do some research to see if the 2005 Infinity has a similar design. With newer vehicles, manufacturers might be transitioning away from mechanical switches. Thanks for the question.
I got a 1998 b4000 but i loose my only key its a metal key witout any ship does it have a way to sart it like this but whitout a key
If there’s no chip on the key, just locate the ignition switch and see if you can operate it by hand like I did in the video. Hope this helps and thanks for stopping by the channel!
Didn’t work
@@daddydiysolutions goes on accessories but dont crank when i push it
Are you sure the switch is good? You can try to track down the wiring diagram for your vehicle and bypass the switch altogether by touching the wires together that control the trigger wire going to the starter. Check out this video for more information on how to bypass the ignition switch: ua-cam.com/video/ZI1n4JEoLg4/v-deo.html.
Confirmed it was irked on my mustang
What about a 2004 chey impala ?
You’ll need to check and see if the ignition switch is designed like the one seen in the video.
Will modern cars do this?
In modern cars you see more electronic designs. With electronic systems like “push button start”, these types of of mechanical ignition switches will probably be phased out. Thanks for stopping by the channel!
2012 f250 don't have this :( and my truck won't start has no power or something but headlights are bright but no lights on dash
No power…sounds like it’s not cranking either. First thing will be to check the battery and connections. If you need help doing that, just let me know.
@daddydiysolutions naw everything like that is good I'm thinking either ignition switch is bad or pcm or bcm idk
@daddydiysolutions also put key in nothing can't even move gear shifter only thing comes up is mileage.
@daddydiysolutions also sometimes it starts sometimes it doesn't do anything
Sounds like you've already checked the battery. Next, I'd probably go for the next easiest thing to test. You could take a look at the starter relay and verify it's working properly and has the necessary inputs and outputs. You could also do a bypass-test and send power directly to the starter to see if it turns over. Gotta be extremely careful doing this test. You don't want to put voltage on the wrong side (control side) of the relay and damage something.
Cómo se arregla eso?😢
The ultimate fix will be for me to replace the steering column.

O yeah
Late 90's ? How bout a 92
It's worth checking if it's a Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury vehicle. Ford used this specific ignition switch all throughout the 90s.
But you can’t drive it? We can’t get it to go into gear.
Sounds like you might have another issue in the steering column. Is the steering wheel locked, won’t turn?
