Thanks for the vid, I'm going to finish the replacement job today when I get home, Thanks to the low life who stole the car, and totally screwed up the key cylinder with a screw driver, I'm greatful for the police officer that found it. and people such as yourself that helps us backyard mechanics learn how to do a job. Thanks again.
I feel for ya Grizz, Someone tried to steal my van last week. They screwed up the driver door lock, got in and destroyed the ignition lock with pliers or something but they didn't get it started. So they went down the block and stole my neighbors work van. POS F'ers!!
Those 500 people who didn't like this tutorial have got to be on something. He spoke clearly, went step by step....as he should and was good on video viewing. I Loved it CODY. Keep making videos my friend.
I am only one person but I didn't have a problem with the video, I thought it was pretty clear myself. Of course I've been working on vehicles most of my life since my dad raced when I was growing up and I was blessed to be mechanically inclined so maybe I'm boas but it was a great video of for me and it was easy to do follow.
Thank you

No no
I got my things stolen today and my keys were in there so this is by far the best video ive seen so im applying it on my ford f150 1991
Thanks for the video....the release pin didnt work on mine so i had to break the cylinder apart to get it out...the new one slid in easily...thanks again
People with chip keys can glue the key close enough to the sensor on most vehicles by placing it inside the column cover, also a common mod rather than reprogramming. Most vehicle will reprogram new keys. See your manual or find a vehicle-specific video.
Hmmm, interesting.
I didn't know that.
Thank you
What?
this worked for me it takes time to drill it out advise having good bits
Thanks. Got my f150 ignition cylinder out just like you said.
This works. Had to use a half inch bit for my 96 isuzu trooper. Was almost to much, but it works enough that we can start it with a screw driver until the new cylinder comes in the mail! Be sure to shut it all the way off when your parked, so you don't drain your battery like I did;l
Thanks. Great job! Clear and adds necessary steps omitted by most others! Thanks Again, very clear and understandable.
Great video! Wasn’t sure how far to drill since some thieves failed at taking my truck!
this happened to me today. 😞
Excellent video. Thank you.
Many thanks for saving me a lot of work!
helped alot 1990 ford explorer i used a wire coat hangar for the pin
Thanks for sharing information was good you needed a light to light it up so you could really see exactly what you did thanks again bye for now I look forward to hear from you Ken.
Thank's Cody! I have a Ranger Truck and am planning on buying my friends Ranger for parts. His is wrecked sitting in my yard and somehow the key cylinder locked up and wouldn't turn. This video shows how to deal with the situation. Thanks Brutha!
Took a lot of stress off of me...!
What size was the last drill Bit you needed to use, The biggest one?
this is good video, lol seriously its RAW!
Sounds good. Thanks!
Got it done! No problem. Just about drilled too deep though. Thank you.
Will it not turn til deep? I have mine almost drilled out... not turning. - not real easy to drill either
Thank you for this video I had someone try to steal my truck so I needed to know how to take it out because they drilled it
same here, except they didnt drill it out they tried smashing it with a screw driver and hammer.
Hi Cody, just watched this video. I've seen other videos of this. The way you explain, and how you video the work is realistic. Not like other videos. You do a great job. Thank you.
I guess im randomly asking but does anyone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Julian Jackson Instablaster =)
@Thatcher Theodore I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Thatcher Theodore it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out !
@Julian Jackson happy to help xD
Will this also work if your steer is locked? Jacked on the steer when trying to get the key out, now it wont get in and wont turn..
It actually worked man thankyou so much for your video you saved me 160$ from those lame locksmiths
I have done a bunch of locks over the years BUT the guys son decided to do it and mangled the lock big time and even broke off some drill bits in there so i had to pick out as much as possible and it still would'nt budge so i drilled it out, and yes i was going to drill out the pin but your right you run the chance to make the new lock seem loose if you dont get that right
How do you change the ignition without a key in a 03 Mustang I lost my key
Hey Cody, so I did this exact thing with my Ford 1997. The issue was that the green piece under the ignition, the metal part, and the gear thing that the ignition goes into also came out. My question is, is do I need to replace those? Or could I just put them back in and everything will work fine? They're not in perfect condition. (My drilling wasn't perfect)
My 1990 F250 ignition broke apart. I had to drill the pins out and it turns out I had to break the cylinder into pcs and remove it. There was a disk with a snap retention ring hold it it place. So after many hours I was able to get it all out and remove and insert the new one minus the snap ring. Fired right up.
Hi, i wanted to ask you about my 2002 dodge neon, im going thru the same problem and i already started drilling out the cylinder. What size drill bit will i have to use to be able to turn it to the on postition? And will i need to remove the ignition switch it selft for the cylinder to turn to the on position? Thank you very much if could take the time to answe i would really appreciate it.
I have a 95 tahoe that sometimes leaves the ignition in the "run" or "acc" positions when I take it out. It's very difficult to get it right between the two positions so that the battery wont die. Would replacing the cylinder solve this? or do I need to go deeper?
i got a 97 ram 1500 and was wondering if this is the same? and what kind of bits do i need cause i tried using mine and it just ground down the bits
this video was very helpfull for my little sister
Nice I already knew how to do this I was hoping it would free turn and not be able to start or shutdown the car so I could learn how to fix mine
good and nice,thanks
Thanks, helped me out of a jam there
While drilling mine out a good bit of it broke off in piece and left the little metro spade like piece and most outer shell of the cylinder. I was wondering if I completely messed it up some how what else could I do?
Thanks very helpfull
My theft system won't stop now
Hey Cody, this was a really great video, although i need your help! I drive a 1998 ford explorer with an identical ignition lock cylinder although my key has a chip. I have lost my only key to the car and now have a replacement cylinder with two keys. My question is can i still use the method shown in this video, or will my ignition cylinder not turn once drilled out because of the key FOB? I need to see my family for thanksgiving!, thank you
What happened adam? This is my concern. Did you have to reprogram anything?
Awesome sauce
What the bit size you used i'm using a 1/2 can i go with a 3\4 bit and drill my way down
I got a 02 cavalier I lost my keys can I still remove the cylinder without the key and how?
a little long winded, but cool, thanks man! 😀✌️
This seems very simple. I have a car that has already been drilled out. What tools will I need?
Hi Cody if I have a immobilizer on the vehicle but need to change out the ignition. What would happen if I unplug it and switched the whole thing out?
@kingcutty455 someone else had busted and trashed his ignition before he arrived thats why he had to drill it. & what pick should be used to pick it?
Hey Cody.... I was wondering what makes a key NOT come out of the ignition??
I've tried spraying W-D in and around the key and wiggling it but nothing seems
to work?? So the key is left in the ignition 24/7 now. It does turn on and off but
won't release itself from the ignition.... any thoughts?? It's a 1992 Lincoln Town Car.
Do you have to re-program the key to start the truck?
Instead of drilling out the cylinder since i dont have any broken bits inside ( no one has tried to remove broken one yet what is best way to remove it 2003 ford f250
You dont have to drill it out do you if you have a working key? Mine turns way to far forward to the point it sticks the starter on and i have to turn it back some!. And when i come back to normal position its in the back position. And its very very sticky and hard to turn when its colder!
what if it has a fob, not a chip. On my ford windstar i would have to push the fob button off so it could start my van, would this interfere in anyway? My fob and keys went missing. Would it be easy to replace the fob and the key with out the computer not letting you in anyway
What do you do if you don’t have a key to turn ignition switch to get it out?
And since someone lost keys decided to take a screwdriver to the ignition switch.
Cody, i was just wondering if you know the size of the last/largest bit you used for this one? Looks to be the same size and setup as my 03 sable. All keys lost, going to be cheaper for me to drill it out and program my new set. Just want to make sure i have a big enough bit before i start. Also, being as my cylinder hasn't been mangled by anyone yet, with this style cylinder, would i maybe be better off drilling two smaller holes top and bottom to destroy the actual tumblers/wafers? Or is a full bore down the center still the best way to go?
gerald sutch Well be careful small bits broke thats how i made this video the guy lost his keys and broke a bit off in it i had to use a pick to get the broken bit out and then drilled it out also if you can there is a small opening in the bottom but be careful not to make it bigger but that is the pin that holds in the lock so if you can just drill that out it will allow the lock cylinder to just slide out
Dwayne king!
Does the vice grips really work? I'm having the same issue!
ive seen some people use a flat head screwdriver and hammer it into the keyhole till it turns the ignition(kinda like a fake key), is that an effective method to use as well? Cons?
I’ve done this to a few of my cars lol
How would you replace a key switch on a 94 ford club van
1997 Dodge neon, I have no key. Lost it. I don't have a drill or anything either. Do I have to do all this drilling?
Hi I have a 52 plate Vauxhall Astra my ignition barrel was jammed therefore my key would not turn!! I try giving it a knock with a rubber mallet as I had been told to give tht a try which to my great luck the key snapped inside the ignition barrel iv started to drill into the barrel will this b ok??? Will I b able to drill right down then turn the ignition so as I can put a new barrel in????
I have a 1998 ford ranger and ive strted how far do i have to go cody
Hey i have a 97 gmc sierra and I drilled the cylinde lock and now it doesnt turn at all or even budge, I did exactly what is said, I just want to know how can I turn it while its jammed?
Cody will this work on an 85 SVO Mustang? I lost my keys and need to replace the cylinder but dont want to pay $300.00 to do it. Thanks,
on a 94 Toyota Corolla I just drilled the pinout cylinder came right out I put a junkyard cylinder in
I understand that it needs to be in run for that little pin to be pushed in but my question is if the key is lost and that old cylinder is no good anyway instead of drilling out the entire old cylinder couldn't just the small pin on the bottom be drilled out or would that be harder any easier to have damage / issues???
Those hard pins are a pita and tend to kick drill bits sideways trashing the column. That's why we drilled the locks on auction cars we bought to repair. Have the new lock in hand and only drill the replaceable lock NOT the steering column. I use stepped bits for the initial drill then drill a small pilot hole (easier to correct if off-center) then a increase bit size in stages because that makes drilling easier by far. (Mechanic since the 1970s here with lots of salvage background.)
Hi my key was stolen from my 04 Buick Rendezvous, my question is if I drill the ignition out will my car still run?
How do I know when to stop drilling
Lol when u hit the other side lol haha
Now I've gotten mine replaced(in a 91 Town Car) and its right back to not letting the key go backwards. Any Idea why this is happening before I go out and buy another steering column? Never dealt with ignitions, let alone fords.
... and is the big screwdriver needed to turn the drilled out lock cylinder?
Lmao. If you know what locks your ignition key fits (doors or glove box) then take that out and take it to a locksmith and have him make you a key, lol. Cost about $60 but hell of alot easier not to mention you don't have to buy a new ignition switch. Also call a locksmith sometimes all you need is your vin number. My glove box lock was the same as my ignition on my 95 f150
so I replace the tumbler in my 97 silverado and it got stuck halfway in and won't go anywhere. I almost started taking the steering wheel off, I'll just drill the key hole insteasd.
Does it even require removing steering wheel? Mine is a 1980 f100.
its easy in the sense of the concept. drilling the shit out takes forever!!
Cody I still need help
After drilling it out the steering wheel unlocked But the key will not turn. I see something in the very back of the cylinder but i cant get it to come out. I have a 2006 ford five hundred sel
Thank you Julie McCoy
My gear broke out. What do I do. I have a mitsubishi & I lost my original key so I had to put a new ignition. Please help
all u had to do was force the ignition forward with a pair of good visegrips then push the pin up pull out the cylinder pop the new one in takes 3 minutes lol u dont gotta drill like that
Your right but on this one ,i got stuck fixing what someone else broke and he had busted pieces in there it would'nt budge.
can u do that to a 97 ford explore too ? thank you
yes
Could you use needle nose vise grips?
Can you do that on a Chevy venture 2003
Do i have to have the battery cables hooked up to turn the ignition on
Would this work on a 97 chevy
Hey Cody.. I have a 2006 e350 that someone triedbto steal and busted out the ignition.... I pulled out old cylinder but new wont go in... Old goes in and out fine but not a new one.... Any ideas??
my key still wont turn, how do i fix the gear on the inside? does it need to be lined up
Some machine oil inject from key way throw with injection sering.
@@yahyaallauddin8744 that was almost a year ago. We had to take the whole thing apart and unlock the steering wheel manually
I just had my 'programming done' but I need to replace my Ignition Lock Cylinder. If after I replace the Cylinder will my existing keys work with it?
Filmtress Mu how did u reprogram the lock?
Does this apply to 1991 f350?
I always get the bad jobs I guess. Mine broke at the tip and the cylinder came out easily with the key and pushing the button, now how do I get the tip of the cylinder that broke off out? I've tried everything. 98 Explorer
Depending on the vehicle not necessary to drill. I just removed an ignition with just a pipe wrench
jean jacque will a pipe wrench work on a 95 gt?
@@alonsosmobileautorepair8862 if you can grab the metal around the ignition it will
jean jacque thanks
Do the battery need to be connected
Hey Cody I have a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. I've drilled out the keyhole with a 3/8 drill bit and the ignition still want turn. What am I missing?
I got a 2005 Saturn Vue
had to drill out the lock cylinder and that went just fine. Installed new cylinder, but it's hard to turn the new key. Truck starts just fine, but key won't stay in locked position, so now I have to hold key in place to keep running. Also to put truck in drive, I have to start with it in neutral and to go into reverse, i start in park. Would this be related to something i did. Truck was abandoned and this is first time ever tried to start it.
Sounds like you have some metal still in there from drilling it out, you can take the lock cylinder back out pretty easy now that you have a key look in there and see if some metal is still there then remove it and lube it up
Cody the Car Guy I just removed my lock cylinder the correct way but I noticed that the little slot where the paddle goes it's misaligned.how do I fix it?
So I should be able to twist it after frying pins??
I accidentally broke mine kuz I lost my key and I used plyers and twisted it to far that it twisted off and now there is just a piece of the ignition stuck and I can't get it out
I bought a new ignition cylinder for Ford Ranger 1994. When I took it out of box 2 little copper colored pins fell out of new cylinder Where do they go? Thanks for helping
well I'm trying to find out what the deal is with a 70 Mustang ignition and lock cylinder switch reinstalls about no info what's the deal so that's all I got to say fellas shoot me some info please
my truck keeps running even when the keys is on the off position.....wit is the cause of that?
Putting it in my pocket
help drilled out to much now what can I do
could you just drill out the release pin rather the cylinder
Did you find out?
Ok! Hold on! What happened to the casing around the key turn
Any idea I’f this would work on a 2005 blazer
What if the pats alarm engaged and the horn honks car is immobilized.?
I drilled out old lock, replaced with a new unit, put it back in and the dash now shows error and am unable to start the truck. Please help. I really like my f250 and I don't want to junk it.
The pin that you push up can you just drill that little one out then slide the hole thing out?
Yes but sometimes drilling that small pin is a pain, just don't drill it out too big or your lock will move around.
I messed up ignition housing by following advice of this guy. Never drill ignition key cylinder from it center or the side where you insert the key. It will cost a lot money. Just press the pin with key in ACC position if you can. Otherwise call trusted mechanic who will not charge you too much. People are free to post BS on youtube.
Can't turn the key to acc if you lost em.. That's why he made this video. Plenty of people have needed to do this exact same process and most appear to do it properly, while others go too deep, use too large of a bit or they break the bit off and attempt to go from there without removing the bit
Hi , i have a similar problem but my y lost the keys and the steerring wheel is lock, can i just drill drirectly to the cilinders little drill and take out the culinder??
Can i drill directly on the cylinders little pin and then pull out the cylinder? Great video by the way
I have an avalanche and i lost my key. A few years back i had to have my ignition replaced and an after market key and cylinder were put in so i have had a new key to start my truck and the original key to open my doors. with that being the case i cant use the key to turn to the start position and use the pin to release the cylinder. can i remove the cylinder without drilling it out to replace for a new cylinder and key.
Josh Gonzales yes if you lock on the bottom around where the key is you will see a small hole with a pin in it, drill out that small pin and you can slide the lock cylinder out then.
+Josh Gonzales if only have one key for the car get another one made keep the other one in the house trust me it bail you out lock the key in the car or miss placed them some ware and like me my old key broke and had a back up to replace it
I did all this, great. worked great. BUT...CAN'T YOU JUST DRILL OUT THAT RETAINING PIN UP THROUGH THE BOTTOM HOLE? I WOUND UP TRYING JUST THIS AT THE END BECAUSE THE IGNITION WAS STILL STICKING. I'm about 99% SURE that I could have done this in the first 2 minutes, and popped that ignition out that way instead of making such a huge production out of drillin out the cylinder!!!
