I had kind of a split reaction to Darth Maul. On one hand, I saw a lot of advertising before Phantom Menace was released, and he looked like he was gonna be an elaborate new villain, like a really big deal. On the other hand, though, when I saw the movie, I was disappointed to see he had little to no dialogue, and I felt like it was kind of a wasted opportunity to get to know him better, especially since he was around for only one movie. Though some say that his silence makes him more intimidating and mysterious, which I can kinda see, but for me personally, I like my characters speaking more, especially if they have a lot of buildup to them. I'm so glad, though, that Maul got a lot more attention in following Star Wars media, he deserved it. And holy hell, they did a damn good job with him! The ways he survived and dealt in his own way with what happened afterward were very believable. And he actually turned out to be a pretty sympathetic character, again, in his own way. There were a lot of things he did that were terrible, so he was still solidly a villain, but man, was his life sad! He could never really win against his enemies, he never really had the approval of his master, and his life was completely wrecked at the end. Talk about getting chewed up and spat back out. It was interesting, and honestly a relief, to see that at the end, Obi-Wan seemed to show him some compassion in Star Wars Rebels. The way he held Maul as he was dying was really quite touching, and intriguing. It makes me think, if they weren't so pitted against each other being Jedi and Sith, what would they have been like towards each other in everyday life? Despite everything Obi-Wan suffered because of Maul, Maul's most hated enemy ends up showing him mercy at the end, and caring enough to be there for him in his last moments when no one else would or could be. Also, I love what Ray Park brought to the role. He is very physically fit to do a lot of Maul's acrobatic moves. Though I thought it was kinda funny that his voice turned out to be too soft. LOL Park seems like a really nice and funny guy in real life, too, I watched his Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim a few years ago talking with James Arnold Taylor, and he looked like a ton of fun to be around. And of course, Sam Witwer is always fun, I first heard him when he voiced the Son in Clone Wars. He does a pitch perfect imitation of Palpatine, too, and he was perfect for Darth Maul as well. He also seems like a friendly and funny guy in real life. :) I also appreciate that he had his own dedication to the character to bring him more to life, and he did a great job. :D
His Palpatine isn't that good, I like the original Battlefront 2 actor and Mike from Red Letter Media's impression more. Also Ian Abercrombie and Tim Curry were great.
@@RavenThanatos Darth Maul got me into the series entirely, he should get a Badass scene in the next Star Wars spin-off movie like Darth Vader did in Rouge One.
I never really thought about his death in Rebels. Anger was always Mauls weakness. If he gave his actions a 2nd thought things could have been alot different. Imagine Obi-wan and Maul watching over Luke as a child.
Anger yes, but more pride than anger. He overcame Obi-Wan on multiple occasions, but it was his pride his desire to toy with him that allowed Obi-Wan to come back at him.
LOL What? They DO have this kind of "Art" and "visual storytelling" COMPLETELY for their characters. Kylo Ren is perfect example of them, what you're saying here makes no sense at all by saying that.
I watch this video at least once or twice a month. Maul is definitely one of my favorite characters of all time and this vid definitely does him justice...and now there’s enough media that Maul’s been apart of to make a pt.2 👀
@Nicholas Rocco a lot of people say this, but Darth Maul was really only interesting as a mute sith lord, and he would have been ruined by george lucas' "colorful" writing.
There were so many potentially excellent villains in the prequels, Maul, Dooku and Grievous are all very interesting characters. I know the prequels are meant for Anakin’s fall to the dark side but a few more scenes would have really helped. Each one of those characters could easily get a full movie and still have plenty of story left.
Lucas always seems to misjudge the value of a character. He doesn't just toss good characters too quickly but gives too much screen time to things like jar jar. Dooku should have had more screen time throughout the prequels.
Its funny how some of the most loved and coolest characters lasted so little time. Brings up the question, how much do we like these characters due to their short lifespan/screen time ? The fact we see so little of them slowly allows them to become fan favorites, maybe more-so than if they had been in every film ?. One thing that is certain though, regardless of them being killed off, is their coolness level. Even General Grievous, Dooku, Jango Fett....so many baddass characters that don't really last long. Yet we got more than we wanted of Jar Jar etc.
I agree with Maul, Boba Fett not so much, I never understood how people love him so much when he did even less then Darth Maul in the movies. From what I remember in TESB Boba Fett never even killed anyone. imo Boba Fett is a very over rated character
But we don't exactly like them due to their killcount etc, I mean...how many people do we really see Darth Vader kill ? we know he can...but he doesnt just go about killing people...he has intimidation and respect, I guess its about whats implied by the character, not exactly what we see them do. Just as we know Vader is a beast who could take on pretty much anyone and win, Boba Fett is a bounty hunter...he has an awesome set of armour with cool weapons, so we can only imagine who he has taken out or 'hunted' down throughout his career. i think what it comes down to mostly, with Fett atleast, is hes just cool...simple as that for allot of people. His identity is mysterious also which can make him interesting to some people (even though we technically know who he is and what he looks like now due to the prequels, Jango Fett, clones etc etc but for many years nobody really knew as he was never unmasked)
@@DarthVader-pl5ts Modern sith Lords? More like modern SHIT Lords, ahahahahahahyahauayauqyayayayhaayyayahahahahahahahhahqhahahahaha.... kill me please.
people have a short memory. The original reaction to Phantom Menace was good. It wasnt until after weeks of David Letterman and Jay Leno making fun of Jar Jar Binks that begin to alter peoples 'take' on the PM. When I left the theater on opening night there wasnt a single person who wasnt yelling and screaming and cheering... well except for me and my roommates. Nobody really noticed Jar Jar. I remember being in the apt hearing late night tv night after night making fun of Jar Jar Binks and I knew exactly what was going to happen. I saw all of this 18 years ago. I saw people acting like they hated the Phantom Menace from the beginning when they really didnt. They just gave into peer pressure. I didnt. I just made fun of people for being weak minded and allowing a stranger to tell them what is cool and what isnt. David Letterman is an idiot. He was never funny. Yet thousands of people let him dictate what President should be voted for, made fun of and harrassed. Ill never understand it.
thats a lie i remember as a kid being excited as shit for this movie and wanting to leave the theatre somewhere around the overly long pod racing bit and i never walk out of movies.
I honestly never thought any of the movies were bad. Ive always loved them all. Ever since i can remember ive seen the movies in TV and on dvd and ive never said "This is bad". I love everything about the movies, even the stupid Jar Jar. Everytime i see the movies i feel like a little kid again.
The Truth Channel, I’m impressed, every word you just said was incorrect... I enjoyed PM a lot as a kid and wasn’t until a few years ago when I went back and watched them that I realized how clunky the dialogue was and how shit Hayden Christianson was at acting, but distinctly remember people being furious about HOW BAD it was during opening weekend... LOTS of people knew immediately what it took me years to realize
Andrew Justice Hey genius, there has never been an actor in ANY Star Wars film named Hayden “Christianson”. And on top of that, how fast do you think kids physically age? People like you shouldn’t be allowed an opinion.
Andrew Justice with the aging part that you thought it was Hayden in the phantom menace but he is way older in attack of the Clones so he couldn't have aged that fast
The craziest part is that Obiwan showed so much humility and restraint in his last bout with Maul. *Clone Wars Spoilers* Obiwan lost his master and love of his life at Maul's hands and yet is merciful in his last fight. That not only shows the wisdom in Obiwan, but the evolution from his youth in his first fight with Maul with aggressive fueled strikes to their last being clean and controlled.
I still can't get past how the character of Darth Maul was blatantly killed off in ep 1. It was a very short sighted move and made it implausible for his return.
True, but until he was brought back in the Clone Wars. He was for all intents and purposes dead. So the decision to kill him in Ep 1 seemed wasteful. He was and is an amazing character.
Search "Chosen One" on Wookieepedia. It's pretty clear that Anakin was the Chosen One, both within the universe and once again, according to Lucas himself. Obi-wan was voicing his opinion based on his own experiences rather than overall canonical facts.
actually, if you watch carefully, obi-wan started to believe luke was the chosen during A New Hope, so he lied to Maul to give him some comfort in his final moments
Gavin Blair I know I did. His look was unexpected in a good way. I can remember him stepping into the projection and thinking “oooooooooo he looks badass!”
I like the prequels, they successfully expand on the creative world of Star Wars and give us amazing lightsaber fights and locations, even if the storyline isn’t that good sometimes.
My dream would be to be watching a future Star Wars movie where the good guys are staring down a dark hallway when a shadowy figure starts to appear. Then one red light saber emerges. Okay it's a Sith....But then....another red light saber comes out the other end forming the double blade....and you then realize.....he's back.....
lol wtf are you on about, he only lost three times you idiot, he's beaten kenobi twice, and killed pre vizsla, also encaptured grievious and dooku which porves to me atleast that out of all the canon sith's he's the second strongest
killed in a shitty way only to come back and die in a shitty way again, in my opinion, they should have waited for the Obi-Wan spin off the movie to have a proper duel
Dovley Hutchinson I completely agree with you; Darth Maul's death in Rebels was horrible -- the kids show should've stayed away from Maul. For one, Obi-wan is too old. lol I am surprised that his arthritis and chronic back pain didn't act up during his duel.
Dammit, y'all not getting the point, the duel is more symbolic than epic [as seen in the video about samurai, he does not want to fight]. Besides that, you can see Obi Wan tricked Maul into thinking he's using Ataru then Maul did the same trick as he did on Qui Gon, this time Obi Wan is prepared. It shows a lot of their character as time went by.
A helmet is a great design because not seeing someones face can be really intimidating as you cant read them as well, but on the other hand, not having a helmet can be just as effective at bringing a terrifying character to life. Like Darth Mauls evil psychotic grimace and unblinking stare. Ian Mccaig set out to try and rival Darth Vaders "perfect design", and i think he nailed it.
Someone give Sam Witwer a live action role already. He's voiced one of the most iconic Sith lords and did voice/mocap work for the most iconic Star Wars video game characters. He deserves to have a big role is in live action franchise.
I feel like Ray is gonna train him on how to use the double-bladed lightsaber. So it's like Maul is training an apprentice, who also happens to be Maul.
The first film and Maul in particular set the standard for the high paced acrobatic fights of later media, SWTOR included, which I am glad for, these are people capable of superhuman feats after all.
I honestly feel like the reason Maul was SOOO larger than life WAS his lack of lines spoken, causing the mystery to feel captivating and intimidating

This guy should've voiced him lmao
Yes 😂😂😂😂
The death of Maul in Rebels after that amazing duel against Obi Wan, is one of the most touching, poignant and emotive moments in the entire saga.
Mauls death had me in close to tears.
For those of you who don't know Maul also made a appearance in the horror blockbuster Insidious
The force is strong within Darth Maul, his force spirit can travel to our world and conquer, WOW!

MAUL MY FAVORITE SITH!!!!!!!!! And I also don't care what other people think of The Phantom Menace was my favorite Star Wars movie of all time
the duel was the better one...and no dialogue which made it unique lol
Phantom Menace is also my favorite Star Wars film, Darth Maul is the reason I loved the film as a kid when I saw in theatres.
Darth Maul made Light Saber battles look badass and change how lame and slow the original trilogy made them look.
@@RavenThanatos
Darth Maul got me into the series entirely, he should get a Badass scene in the next Star Wars spin-off movie like Darth Vader did in Rouge One.
Zahra Mohseni I thought revenge of the sixth was a pretty cool movie the ending was really good
I never really thought about his death in Rebels. Anger was always Mauls weakness. If he gave his actions a 2nd thought things could have been alot different. Imagine Obi-wan and Maul watching over Luke as a child.
It's some kinda paradox, as long as anger saved him from being dead after the "TPM" duel! His strenght is his own weakness!!
Anger yes, but more pride than anger.
He overcame Obi-Wan on multiple occasions, but it was his pride his desire to toy with him that allowed Obi-Wan to come back at him.
LOL Just no. His death was perfect as it was in Rebels, the thought of him turning good is just repulsive for his design and character.
@Gadget-Walkmen yes. I was a fool. Honestly the dumbest shit I've ever said. Mauls death is as close to perfect as you can get.
This kind of art and visual story telling is one of many things Disney is missing.
A coherent story and likable characters are another.

LOL What? They DO have this kind of "Art" and "visual storytelling" COMPLETELY for their characters. Kylo Ren is perfect example of them, what you're saying here makes no sense at all by saying that.
I watch this video at least once or twice a month. Maul is definitely one of my favorite characters of all time and this vid definitely does him justice...and now there’s enough media that Maul’s been apart of to make a pt.2 👀
best duel in the series
I was the 69th like. You're welcome.
I wish Maul was the main villain throughout the whole prequel trilogy
No you don't
@Nicholas Rocco a lot of people say this, but Darth Maul was really only interesting as a mute sith lord, and he would have been ruined by george lucas' "colorful" writing.
Same
@Nicholas Rocco just an opinion mate I think he would of been good too. People predicting this that but they dont know either so.
Lucas wasted, Boba Fett and Maul.
Yet we got more than we wanted of Jar Jar etc.
i got my maul fan service, just waiting on disney who will probably fail to put boba fett in their filler episodes of rebels
Lucas’ directing style: “Faster, more intense”
Well , he did start out in stock car racing after all!
the fuck is wrong with that statement?

That already happened in Rebels. Kenobi destroyed him
@@coledavis5212 I'm well aware of that, I'm saying I want to see it in live action.
Maybe in his serie
That already exists in canon so they wouldn't do that unless rebels is declared non canon
Incredible. Such a wonderfully designed, well-built character. The new trilogy could learn a thing or two just from this one character alone..
I like how some of Maul's designs later became Mother Talzin and the nightsisters
Look where we are now. Stoked for Friday and Monday!
people have a short memory.
Did you voice him?
Ben Kenobi Hmmm.....someone is setting his high ground around here....
Ben Kenobi Hello there.
JEDI!!!!!
He does sound like him
"At last we will have revenge"

sam witwer is very underrated, maybe a bit overacting at times but i can tell he puts passion on his lines
The craziest part is that Obiwan showed so much humility and restraint in his last bout with Maul.
*Clone Wars Spoilers*
Obiwan lost his master and love of his life at Maul's hands and yet is merciful in his last fight. That not only shows the wisdom in Obiwan, but the evolution from his youth in his first fight with Maul with aggressive fueled strikes to their last being clean and controlled.
“Because the characters appearance required him to show emotions such as anger and hatred, using only facial expressions.” You don’t say 😂😂😂
I still can't get past how the character of Darth Maul was blatantly killed off in ep 1. It was a very short sighted move and made it implausible for his return.
Matthew Clark he wasn't killed off. Follow up on Star Wars: Rebels. Episode: Twin Suns. That's when he truly dies.
True, but until he was brought back in the Clone Wars. He was for all intents and purposes dead. So the decision to kill him in Ep 1 seemed wasteful. He was and is an amazing character.
ZMan1471 he was in the clone wars too, and it was confirmed canon
His arc in The Clone Wars show is one of the best arcs in Star Wars though
Matthew Clark I wish he would've stayed as the main antagonist throughout the prequel trilogy
Great video. According to Lucas, the "Chosen One" was Anakin Skywalker, but I can see the argument for Luke being him.
Tony Navarro After the events of Revenge Of The Sith, Obi Wan no longer believed in that and instead thought Luke is their only hope to bring balance.
You Can't Handle The Fluffle I believe Obi Wan genuinely thought Luke to be the Chosen One. In his eyes there was no chance of redemption.
+Dark Lord Of The Sith How would that be lying then?
Let's give a shout out and big thanks to Ray Park (Darth Maul Actor) for all his amazing stunts and acting.
Now that they showed the ear piercing im never gonna see darth maul the same again
I love the fact that maul's story ends once he has a common goal with his life long enemy.
lol did anyone else absolutely shit themselves when mauls face popped up at the start

Darth Maul is by far my favorite Star Wars character
More than Vader?

I like the prequels, they successfully expand on the creative world of Star Wars and give us amazing lightsaber fights and locations, even if the storyline isn’t that good sometimes.
Lol you mean sequel lovers...

This man narrating this video has all the emotion of a wet fish. My ears started bleeding within seconds of hearing it.
Such A Badass concept. Darth Maul looks like the origin story to the sith. Awesome video thanks for the detail
Soooo kind of like Darth Vader in Rogue One?
I got goose bumps just from reading of it.
A sith witch would have been awesome. The Nightsisters needs more attention in the movies.
Creepy Girl we did, asajj ventress from the clone wars series

killed in a shitty way only to come back and die in a shitty way again, in my opinion, they should have waited for the Obi-Wan spin off the movie to have a proper duel
Dovley Hutchinson
I completely agree with you; Darth Maul's death in Rebels was horrible -- the kids show should've stayed away from Maul. For one, Obi-wan is too old. lol I am surprised that his arthritis and chronic back pain didn't act up during his duel.
Dovley Hutchinson ya I wished they didn't bring him to rebels
Maul is probably my favourite character
Dovley Hutchinson His death in Rebels is beautiful. It is not meant to be some epic duel, but a symbolic duel.
I'll bet his girlfriend is in love with his pillow talk
Why does this guy sound like he hasn’t slept since 10 weeks
A helmet is a great design because not seeing someones face can be really intimidating as you cant read them as well, but on the other hand, not having a helmet can be just as effective at bringing a terrifying character to life. Like Darth Mauls evil psychotic grimace and unblinking stare.
Ian Mccaig set out to try and rival Darth Vaders "perfect design", and i think he nailed it.
And he said his story in the clone wars had finished... Little did he know season 7 was going to be a thing 😂

Someone give Sam Witwer a live action role already. He's voiced one of the most iconic Sith lords and did voice/mocap work for the most iconic Star Wars video game characters. He deserves to have a big role is in live action franchise.
100% agree. Dude is mega passionate about his work from what I've seen. Seems like an overall cool dude too.
I feel like Ray is gonna train him on how to use the double-bladed lightsaber. So it's like Maul is training an apprentice, who also happens to be Maul.

Solo writers: “Well no, but also yes.”
Its always cool to see the process on how creators come up with characters, and to see how they had a completely different idea from the start
The first film and Maul in particular set the standard for the high paced acrobatic fights of later media, SWTOR included, which I am glad for, these are people capable of superhuman feats after all.
