He's the only actor from the prequels who's still excited about it and proud of it. I suppose the fact that he was treated better by the fans than any of the other actors might have something to do with it. In truth, he was just lucky enough to have somewhat better lines, or rather, less terrible.

6:15 George Lucas seems like he was on the verge of happy tears like "I found him! I found young Anakin!" I think Jake Lloyd did a good job, for a young inexperienced kid. Yes, I thought he stumbled a bit through some lines in the movie but overall, he did a good job. His classmates were mean for bullying him and the parents of those kids should be ashamed of their children's behaviour. We will never know what other great work we missed out on Jake Lloyd but I am glad he was child Anakin. I hope one day he comes to realise how important he was to George Lucas's vision.

I agree with the altered focus, but the passion is still there with how he was pushing what he had at the time (the sound effects in the podrace). I think George's biggest flaw was the script writing and plot. His universe building was great though.
He's not a strong dialogue writer but I think he's a great visionary director. I love that in each of the prequels he added so many different worlds and amazing visuals, I'm sure he's a nice guy and I'll always respect him for creating something truly special for a lot of people
Was going to mention this. I loved the little detail of the sound of the prop lightsabers clinking in the end. It's awesome seeing how it all came together and just the amount of work and vision needed to create this movie.
And looking back at the behind the scenes for Star Wars Making of a saga, it’s amazing how the behind the scenes has changed over the years especially the screen graphics. It’s a lot more clearer(what I mean is the screen graphics of the movie if you take a look how it looked like in the 80s).
@@moisesramos6746 And I also noticed it’s a lot clearer, what I mean is if you take a look at the screen graphics of the movie, how it looked like in the 80s, (like in Star Wars making of a saga when they show some of the clips from Star Wars return of the Jedi for example, how different it looks), when it released, it looked a lot different than how it does today.
Like or hate The Phantom Menace, this "making of" documentary is simply one of the best ever made. It has great depth into the making of the movie, from the very beginning to the release, has no voice-over, no rushed interviews, and it takes its time to show us how it was made, unlike most "making of" which are no more than rushed made-for-TV featurettes.
Any 1980's making of documentary specially the making of Raiders and TEmple of Doom are excellent. Also From SW to Jedi (1989) gives you a full in-depth look at Episode VI. Strangely a documentary called Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi was released in 1984 and is just as good.
Literally The Moon oh I absolutely agree, I just figured I’d fill you in about the other one :) I think I had seen the Original Trilogy one before I saw this one, so when I saw this one it was not only familiar, but I also felt the same thing about it getting so over the top lol.

What I personally always find funny about that quote is that I think Jar jar isn't even the best comedy Character in Phantom Menace. I always even as a kid found Nute Gunray much funnier.
Every generation loves “their” Star Wars trilogy more. It’s a shame some feel the need to bash on a film they don’t 100% agree with... Its still Star Wars. ❤️ Personally I don’t like Jar Jar in the first movie. But it doesn’t ruin the entire movie either. 🙄
It’s pretty terrible what the public did to Jake Lloyd, the actor of Anakin. He was bullied by almost everyone as a 10 year old child. That would be taxing for a grown adult. He was only doing his job and what was asked of him. And now he is in a mental facility because of the harassment that he endured. Some fan bases can be so toxic sometimes.
HabitualJoker too toxic I say. And it’s still going on now with the actress who played Rose. Star Wars nerds went from those being bullied and becoming bullies themselves.

***** On what basis aren't they good? There's story about galaxy politics, love, etc .. there's beautiful imagery of fantasy worlds and characters. Is this not what Star Wars is about?
+FullmetalGamer97 Ok and you've given the broad generalization: good vs evil. Now you need plot to fill in the gaps and that's where the political councils come into play. It's much like governments on earth from different counties but instead it's governments of planets from different galaxies. Then you have the bad Empire, Siths and now the First Order trying to overthrow the good governments and rebels to rule the universe. That's what Star Wars is about.
J R -You ever hear the tragity of George Lucas the rendered? -No -I thought not; it's not a story the purists would tell you, Its a directoral legend. George Lucas was a director so influential & so wealthy he could use his budget to influence the animators in his staff and create, films. He had such a knolage of computers he could even save his actors from acting. - He could actually... Make ships without models? - The digital world is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. - What happened to him? - He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was loosing his power. Which, eventually of course he did. Unfortunately he sold everything he made to Disney; then Disney abandoned all of his ideas for the new trilogy. Ironic. He could make any fantasy come true, but not his own. - Is it possible to learn this power? - Not from an artist.
Seeing Jake behind the scenes is sad in a way. He is under so much pressure and he can sense the expectations on him. I hate how his story unfolded post production.
I was a child when the "prequels" came out. Maybe that's why I enjoyed them so much. I can watch any SW movie any day, anytime and enjoy it. I love these movies, all of them.
Man, so was I. Was seven when II came out. How can you not like any movie with Christopher Lee in it? The boomer generation is just cynical and jealous
The editing on this documentary was superb, I've seen it 20 times atleast over the years and some parts still seem to give me goosebumps. One in particular being the end with George sitting down to write another screen play, everything we seen in the docs and on screens started from him sitting there quietly writing.
I was 10 when this film came out, I too miss that time, the build up to it was such a magical time, it’s too bad the film wasn’t very good but oh well, this documentary is like watching a film about all the decisions made onboard the Titanic that led it straight to the iceberg. The scene in the theatre after they see the first cut is so full of dread, they knew but could do nothing about it
you have to admit he was the key. if they did him right, the movie would have been a bigger success. it didn't work though. they did fix that in the next two though.
This is one of the best “making off” documentaries there is. Love or hate the film, you can truly see where some of the controversial decisions are made.
As much as people were disappointed by this movie, watching this makes me appreciate the film so much more. I think it's clear Lucas always had great intentions but at the same time got a little carried away like he said "I may have gone too far in a few places". But I actually enjoyed the film & I still do to this day
The music alone is worth watching the movie for. Williams' blast of "Duel of the Fates" as the door opens to reveal Maul is as iconic an image as any in the saga. It's only topped by the amazing fight that follows. Still gives me goose bumps.
It's a flawed movie, but I don't hate it, and i'm sad that it wasn't well received. I loved Qui-Gon, Maul, the pod race... there were enough things - especially in the second half - that made the movie enjoyable.
I swear I thought the same during the "are you an Angel?" Scene because He seemed in deep down in his thoughts with darth vader. It was poetry. Sad but beautiful
The rough cut screening conversations are intense. Rick is mortified with the result. The editors are trying to explain the issues. Lucas is calm but knows it needs jostling before the final cut is pressed. Amazing.
26:44 lol George: Natalie's great. She's great. It all came together. It was perfect. She really had it down. George: Ian was lovely. Ian's always great. He's reliable. George: And I learned a lot with Jake.
I watched this documentary featurette as a kid more times than I can even count when I was growing up. Gave me such an appreciation and even more curiosity about the making of films in general. I’m pretty sure watching this “Making of” doc caused me to watch like every single “Making of” featurette on every DVD I owned for probably the entirety of my teen years 🤣🤣
Yeah, none of this "we designed each lightsaber based on the character's personality, where this style of hilt represents wisdom and the ball at the end represents the desire for balance" Also, that was the first toy lightsaber I ever had as a kid, so I'm kinda biased
I remember the period of 1997-1999 as it was my intro or "training period" in Star Wars. It began on my 7th birthday when I was gifted the special edition set on VHS. I watched those tapes over and over again for 2 years (and beyond) and right when I got sad that I only had 3 adventures, my mom told me that a new movie was coming out soon (Episode 1). I remember going to see the Rugrats movie and I don't remember a thing about that movie except that was the first time i saw the trailer for Episode 1 and I was HYPED. I remember the movie delivered and I was as happy as a little kid could be. Then I remember leading up to Episode 2 and the internet had come into full swing and that was the beginning of naysayers having a wide platform. I actually wondered if something was wrong with me for liking Episode 1 and 2.
My first experience with Star Wars was The Phantom Menace in 1999. I was 10 years old and I thought it was the greatest movie I had ever seen! I fell in love and it changed my life.
I saw Star Wars (no bloody subtitle!) at the age of 7 in a drive-in theater in July of 1977. It blew me away, and went on to become a huge part of my life, I must admit.
That is actually pretty telling. Even they knew it was bad. And when Ben Burtt talks about how there is too much going on too fast near the end, he was right. You have four "final battles" going on at the same time and each one has a completely different tone. The space battle is just hopeless and desperate, the whole Jar Jar thing is goofy, the attack on the palace was a political move that no one really understood the implications of at the time, and the Obi-Wan/Maul fight is really intense. Those are all spliced together and happening small snippets at a time. It's like watching a bad Christopher Nolan movie.
@@logicaldude3611 I mean to be fair this isn't the first star wars film to have different tones cutting back and forth between various battles. Return of the Jedi did something similar with the ground battle on Endor which was a bit goofy but still fun, The space battle with Lando that's very exhilarating, and Luke's intense battle with Vader. Although the tones feel a bit more consistent there than they are in Phantom Menace but I still don't think it's that bad.
@@logicaldude3611, it’s not as bad as you make it seem. Sure they’re all different in tone but they’re all fighting the same battle and all 4 battles mirror each other in a way. Towards the end of the battle, it seems they all lose but they manage to regain their footing and win at the same time and really, only the battle with the droids and gungans was tonally inappropriate. Everything else was find.
Star wars fandom consists of two different sets of people before Disney took over. One was a bunch of people who absolutely, thoroughly hated anything that deviated from what they originally saw in theatres. Doesn't matter if they were objective improvements like replacing Yub Nub with the Victory Celebration theme or replacing a gecko emperor with Ian McDiarmid. These manbabies were the ones that ended up bullying a little kid for just being part of the Prequels they decided to go on a crusade against. The second group were sane, rational folks.
I know a lot of directors and producers who would've fallen into absolute despair at the sight of the storm damage, but George managed the same calm tone he always has. Lots of respect just for that alone.
People can say what they want about Lucas's writing and directing but the man knows how to keep his cool and doesn't let anything get in the way of his visions. He's honestly a fantastic visual director.
I’ll always remember that awkward moment when it ended at the midnight screening I went to 1999 when everyone kind of looked at each other and there was a collective feelings of ‘oh man, it just wasn’t that good right?’. But for real, the hype was too much, but it didn’t stop me seeing it four more times, and to be honest, for all its faults as a film, it feels a hell of a lot more fun, giant in scope and creative than the sequel trilogy. And, for the record, every actual kid in every session I saw had the time of their lives. Side note; it’s remarkable how many practical effects were in this film. So many great miniatures.
***** George has always gotten heat for the prequels. He's come to a point where he really doesn't give a fuck what the fans think. So much that somebody like JJ Abrams had to take over the franchise. This WAS George's baby, but the kid is all grown up now. We as fans have to realize that Star Wars is a universal phenomenon, it's bigger than just one man.
FocusReborn Yes that simple sentence tells the whole story. I'm 100 % sure that JJ Abrams, when the Force Awakens will be released in DVD, will say something like this : 'Finn is the central character of the new trilogy'.

George seems like such a nice guy. I really think he had the best best intentions with the prequels.
For all the flaws of the prequels, no one can say they're derivative of the OT which is more than I can say for the new trilogy.
He’s a nice guy I think the success altered his focus, don’t think the passion and heart was there anymore
I agree with the altered focus, but the passion is still there with how he was pushing what he had at the time (the sound effects in the podrace). I think George's biggest flaw was the script writing and plot. His universe building was great though.
He's not a strong dialogue writer but I think he's a great visionary director. I love that in each of the prequels he added so many different worlds and amazing visuals, I'm sure he's a nice guy and I'll always respect him for creating something truly special for a lot of people
I think his problem with the Prequels was he didn't have someone to Reign him in and tell him hey this ain't working. Like he did on the O.T .

@@logicaldude3611 When is a rough cut for any movie ever good?
I loved Episode I as a kid. Still do. Never understood any of the hate.
Just watch mr.Plinkets review on it, of all of the prequels actually. Yea, they are pretty shite.

Manchildren, keep in mind they harrased kid Anakin and Jar Jar's actor was driven into almost suicide.
@Jimb0 so why exactly are you calling me garbage and man-baby?
It was just really slow in the later half of it honestly
This was my FAVORITE documentary as a kid. Expertly tells the story of what actually went into this major, major project.
Dude experienced the same thing when he made the original StatWars, he's cursed to expeirence thunderstorms when he shoots in a desert

1:00:20 Best piece of music ever made for a movie. Don't even try to change my mind...
best ever
Totally badass
SHUN DUN SHUN DUN SHUN DUN
Gives me chills! It's so powerful!
John Williams is a great Komponist.
Star Wars, Harry Potter (Hedwig Theme),his music takes you emotional to that world.
Again he is a great Men.
28:28 My favorite part of this whole thing was just seeing Darth Maul casually help Ewan with the stunt 😂
"Jar Jar's a key to all of this."
- George Lucas
***** Yeah because.....you know, none of that stuff could have been written differently.
I hope you're joking.
I'm 100 % sure that JJ Abrams, when the Force Awakens will be released in DVD, will say something like this : 'Finn is the central character of the new trilogy'.
warner kurt Except that Finn might actually be a good character. Fingers crossed...
