I love Ian McDiarmid and I am sure he will be great as usual, but the simple fact of the matter is that it will be poorly written as nothing in the sequel trilogy even as much as hinted at this. It's just more nostalgia play to get fans to buy tickets to this mess. This sequel trilogy could have been amazing, but serious mistakes were made every step of the way, resulting in flashy trash that is best ignored.
It would have been awesome if the climax of RotJ had taken place on Coruscant rather than a second Death Star. It seems a bit strange in retrospect that all the action of the OT took place so far away from the Galaxy's centre of political power. Taking the frontier farm boy protagonist from his podunk home planet to the imperial capital would have nicely complemented the overall plot arc.
Yes yes a thousand times yes. I love this idea and refuse to believe it wasn't impossible since Blade Runner was released the previous year. In the prequels we can see the glorious center of the Republic slowly decay. We then take two movies to explore other parts of the Galaxy, only to return to the Imperial Capital, now polluted and ruled with an iron fist by Palpatine. Then we can take the next two movies to explore the struggles of the fledgling New Republic, and finally return to the First Order-occupied planet. Only this time, the people of Coruscant are not going to give up their sovereignty and freedom without a fight.

A really good review as it looks at the Palpatine/Darth Sidious character from every dimension. VERY well researched. Darth Plagueis was wise . . . perhaps . . . far too wise as he created both Darth Sidious and Darth Vader.
My second favorite Star Wars character (behind Revan). Palpatine is the best fictional villain of all time to me. He's the literal pure definition of evil, and yet he's likeable.
Love the music...to those who don't know, it's a remake of the track "The Emperor Arrives" from Return of The Jedi when Palpatine/Darth Sidious is greeted by Darth Vader on the newly constructed Death Star. The deep "aahhhs" gave the track a depth no instrument could.
I remember my boyfriend buying a SW Halloween costume for his son, after Return of The Jedi, back in the 80s. I think it was a pilot's coverall. The label, however, said Revenge of The Jedi. Can't remember why they eventually changed the title, and the kid ended up exchanging the costume for something else. I've always wondered if we should have kept it, and how much that first one would be worth today...
Interesting. Here I thought that I already knew everything worth knowing about Palpatine - yet I had no idea that Ian McDiarmid was not Lucas's first choice to play the part, but Alan Webb. Little extra bit of trivia; In earlier drafts of revenge of the sith, Anakin was supposed to be present from the very start of Palpatine's arrest, and would in fact use Anakin's lightsaber to fight the jedi. If you look really closely at the hilt during the fight you can even see that it's Anakin's hilt with a red blade

Keep in mind that in this version Anakin would've been with him the whole time, so he couldn't really just casually walk up to a statue, break it and take a lightsaber from it without Anakin doing anything.
I really wish they would make a Darth Sidious film. He’s one of the most interesting of all the characters and his back story would be worthy enough for a film.
That was an extremely interesting video that revealed several things I did not know from behind the scenes. Palpatine is one of my favorite villains in movies/books/TV. Along with Baron Harkonen (Dune), Mr Hickey (The Terror), and Bowler Hat Guy (Meet the Robinsons).
It`s interesting to note that whilst Revill is Kiwi and Sir Ian McDiarmid is Scottish, Palpatine`s accent is a mix of RP English(As Senator and Chancellor Palpatine) and Revill`s Kiwi accent as Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious(Particularly in the pronunciation of the word "Galaxy" which McDiarmid pronounces like "Gilaxy" which is almost certainly a callback to Revill`s Kiwi roots).
I know some will hate me for this but I was glad that Palpatine was brought back for Episode 9. Palpatine is the ultimate evil in the Star Wars Galaxy.
I believe Palpatine could’ve survived with more tact, cloning is okay but I feel like the ultimate evil should have access to a completely vile way to cheat death in some way Like if Kenobi and Yoda could be so pure and disciplined that they return as Force Ghosts then I feel like Palp pervert the powers that be so badly he’s basically the first and last Revenant still lingering even after he was vaporized
I write my own little sci-fi short stories as a hobby. 😊🤓 I don’t like to name my characters after common, everyday human names like John, Mary or Chris. I make up my own names, mixing and mashing syllables and looking around for letters and sounds for inspiration. The names have to fit my characters’ personality. It’s really a whole process.
We surely haven't seen the last of Sheev yet... Sidious: I have died before. The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be... unnatural. Kylo Ren: I killed Snoke. I'll kill you! Sidious: My boy, I made Snoke. I have been every voice... you have ever heard... inside your head.
Ok an emperor doesn't have royal guard, he has imperial guard. I don't know why they keep being refered to as royal guard. Royal relates to kings, queens, princes,..
An Emperor can be a king, and vice versa. The most obvious example is the British monarch during the British Empire, but there are lots of examples all throughout history. There's no reason why an Emperor couldn't have a "royal guard"
@@SonofSethoitae Palpatine was an elected official, not a monarch. He didn't come from a royal family, never had the title of king so his guard wouldn't be royal guard.
@@Artey86 It may not be appropriate for Palpatine, although I would argue that the line between King and Emperor is often blurred, but that wasn't the point you made. You said that emperors don't have royal guards which I pointed out isn't always true.
Here is the original Emperor's dialogue: Vader: What is thy bidding, my master? Emperor: There is a great disturbance in the Force. Vader: I have felt it. Emperor: We have a new enemy: Luke Skywalker. Vader: Yes, my master. Emperor: He could destroy us. Vader: He is just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him. Emperor: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi. Vader: if he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally. Emperor: Yes. Yes, he would be a great asset. Can it be done? Vader: He will join us or die, Master.
When he first emerged from that shuttle in "Return of the Jedi", accompanied by John Williams' brilliant score, I knew that I was in the presence of pure evil. Serious props to Ian McDiarmid for bringing to life the most evil individual in the Star Wars galaxy.

Actually, those debates were a ton of fun, and some fans made great arguments over why they thought that Sidious was a different person from Palpatine. Some thought that George was purposely misleading us and that he had something more clever up his sleeve down the road.
Age has its virtues (sometimes). I was 19 when Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, and soon after read the Lucas approved novelization. Which really got inside the characters heads, and good writing. At any rate, yes. Emperor Palpatine recalled being "Young Senator Palpatine," having been a powerful Sith Lord all along, and having turned Anakin/Darth Vader. So...I knew all along, and waited anxiously for the story to unfold!!!

Did you flip your desk over yet?
Did you flip your desk?
vent riss Did you do it?
DEW IT
Even with the scene of palpating revealing he made anakin to me he kinda implied it anyway.
April 2019: He's back....
I’ve missed this series.
Darth Sidius if by far my favorite SW villain.
I know some will hate me for this but I was glad that Palpatine was brought back for Episode 9. Palpatine is the ultimate evil in the Star Wars Galaxy.
I believe Palpatine could’ve survived with more tact, cloning is okay but I feel like the ultimate evil should have access to a completely vile way to cheat death in some way
Like if Kenobi and Yoda could be so pure and disciplined that they return as Force Ghosts then I feel like Palp pervert the powers that be so badly he’s basically the first and last Revenant still lingering even after he was vaporized
@@saltedhorsemeat4843 I doubt he even knew about how to become one with the force.
Phenomenal! Great recap and insight!
"Yes ,unlimited pooooaaaaaawwwwrr!!!.I will return for my graand daauuugggtaa...." -Emp.Palpatine
It’s really a whole process.
the fact you compared Palpatine to richard nixon lol
17:50 "I´m whatching Toll-o-vision" Lol
This video deserves more views.
6:28 Nixon does the jedi mind trick.
"COS DASHIT" - As in, he's the guy who "causes da shit"
Here is the original Emperor's dialogue:
Vader: What is thy bidding, my master?
OKAY I literally just watched Taxi Driver two days ago, and during the campaign scene (the one you show), I looked at the name Palantine and said “huh. Pretty similar to Palpatine. Wonder if they’re connected”
Palpatine is easily the best character in all of Star Wars. He's the Senate, after all.
Can you do Jango Fett
Jango unchained
lol
We haven't seen the last of Palpatine, boy you indeed haven't, considering this was made before the Rise of Skywalker was released.
What made him so dangerous is that Palpatine is his chameleon-like behavior and his ability to.manipulate people
Time to update/edit with new material from Rise of Skywalker!
wow, this video was amazing. You got my sub.
Many thanks mate
OH MY GOD THANK YOU! I'm so fucking tired people think Vader was for Father and not INvader.
Just thank you mate!
Ian voiced Palpatine in Rebels season 4
I enjoyed the prequels it showed how Anakin became Darth Vader and it showed the rise of Palpatine from senator to emperor and IMO the prequels was really good
Wait, isn't Ian still alive?
IMO absolutely the greatest casting for any role, ever.
Yes. Currently he is 76.
I was just wondering about this yesterday! You read my mind dude!
Thanks dude
Bro come on -- everyone knew that Sidious was Palpatine back in Episode I
Although the Emperor is only in a few scenes in each movie he steals the show when he's there.
You should really do Rey. Oh wait there is no backstory 🙃
She should have been grandaughter of Palpatine or a genetic experiment with his genes
Legend has it that she faught her way out of the womb. Then she beat up both of her parents and left.
A character not being connected to other people from the series is not a bad thing.
@@mrwheatthins2413 I agree with you. I don't understand what they are talking about when they are dating that they wanted her to have no back story because they wanted anyone to be able to have the force. Wasnt that already the case?
Hah!
*Death Star blows up*
Darth Vader: "Who did it?... Who Cos Dashit?!..."
😂😂😂😂😂 THANK F LUCAS DROPPED THAT NAME! 😂😂😂
Man do I love this channel. Keep up the good work mate.
16:53 thats one of my favorite parts of the prequels. that smirk, palpatine is like i played you so good and made you my bitch and you dont even know it, your my puppet for the rest of your life
he who cause da shit
The Emporer has always been and always will be my favorite Star Wars character
Good piece, man. Still, did anyone over the age of 5 not know that Palpatine was Sidious from the first time they saw Episode 1? Seriously? LOL. . .
I thought everyone knew and it was just an unspoken thing.
There was a great many people who did not know and the debate lasted for 6 years, right up until Revenge of the Sith was released. Actually, those debates were a ton of fun, and some fans made great arguments over why they thought that Sidious was a different person from Palpatine. Some thought that George was purposely misleading us and that he had something more clever up his sleeve down the road.
Anyone who'd watched the original trilogy would already know the name Palpatine.
@@TheStarBlack No it was never mentioned or spoken
Ian Mcdiarmid is a fucking genius
Of all the perfect casting choices for the Star Wars series, having Ian as the senate was especially golden.
I hope you make an updated version of this with The Rise of Skywalker.
Love your stuff, man. Any plans on doing any videos on heroic characters rather than villains?
For sure! My next one probably. Have you any suggestions?
Ya can't go wrong with starting with Luke himself. :)
I had been thinking the same. It would be a LONG video lol.
These videos are fantastic!
Love your star wars videos so much! ♥️♥️♥️
I'm still surprised Luke Skywalker knew his Sith name as Darth Sidious
You didn't mention how in the Emperor's appearance in the fourth season of Star Wars Rebels, Ian McDiarmid actually returned to voice the Emperor. Sam Witwer only voiced him in his vocal cameo in Season 1
never knew it was the same actor. Thats funny how that worked out so well.
