@@hautelemode Don't you wish they moved the bow to the back though. So its like at the abdomen there was a tight wrap that all connected to a bow at the back?
Rather than circus, I see flora and fauna in this. Almost like those fancy, kinda old-fashioned greenhouses that also have birds on their perches in them. The stilts could be like herons and cranes.
I was getting angel vibes, the long dresses reminded me of the angels on top of Christmas trees. The idea of cranes really makes my heart sing, though. Maybe it’s a play on both, since they both live in the sky
I love how this collection plays with perspective that drastically modifies the look of the body. The ball gown with the dropped waist and the floral headpiece is probably the best example of this. Up close you can see its a drop waist, but from the larger picture her body looks so high up that it almost gives the illusion of an hourglass figure. The dress really messes with proportions in a truly artistic way that we never would've gotten on a regular runway. The whole collection is really interesting
It’s funny how Dior by ,she who must not be named, is making tiny doll clothes, while Valentino by pier paulo is doing long gigantic over the top dresses
I think this whole collection is very tactful, not bold, elegant and respectful. It's not showing off wealth, when the whole world struggles with health and financial crisis.
Not only do I see the references to the circus, I cannot help but see such a direct conversation with studio photography (robert maplethrope's "flowers" series comes to mind!) where the conscious effort to craft within isolation results in stark contrasts of the light, background, foreground, scale, perspective, within the atelier and studio. The consistent references to floral imagery within the collection also reminds me of "vanitas" painting, and the reflection of the transience of life within a visual document. Many Dutch artists would have to wait (upwards to a year) for specific flowers to bloom within their bouquet arraignment before collecting them to paint/photograph. The patience required to produce a singular image and the parallel of endurance of life within the collection and still life imagery is really strong for me.
A lot of these looks are giving me french revolution and bourgeoisie vibes as well the flower wigs are like powdered wigs but delicate and peaceful and the hoods and metallics are giving me knight in shining armour vibes. I think these pieces are so reflective to whats going on right now in people being fed up to a breaking point with out leaders
These long long dresses remind me of christening gowns. Well, the first one did, so by proxy the other ones do too. Extra fancy babies ready to be baptized 😂
This is couture excellence at its finest. Didn't expect anything less from PP but even in the midst of a pandemic and challenged to create with limited recourses the team at Valentino still went above and beyond to wow viewers. Lets hope the house can come out on top in the fight against the fashion conglomerates!
Usually I don't like just white clothes and personally I think coture should not have any white garment. But when you talked about that colour theory "colour are there even we don't see it" suddenly I started to see and imagine those dresses in different colours. I think from now on I will start to see white clothing differently.
It can be weird for some people. But don't worry, if you see it "unwearable", it's normal, haute couture isn't supposed to be wearable, it's supposed to be art. 😊😊😊
Luke, I just need to let you know how much I appreciate each and every video you make. You're like,,, my favorite fashion critic. So good, I'd be terrified if you came to my school and saw me in sweatpants and shirt lmaofhsfh. You deserve the world
I think the choice to create the whole collection in white was also a reference to Valentino's legendary "white collection" for Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1968, where all the pieces were similarly in shades of white, cream and ivory. It was an extremely important collection in Valentino's history and pieces were worn by stars like Jackie Kennedy (who wore one of the models for her wedding dress) and Audrey Hepburn.
Give this man a regular article in a top fashion magazine stat. I’m not a fashion snob, but Who else feels so much smarter and snootier after watching his videos?! 😏😌
I think it was a true show more like theater spectacle. I felt the message of hope and escapism, everything was so ethereal and above the ground. It expressed the need to look above, we all need it now
I genuinely thought it was a quite unique and inspiring collection - and it felt like a breath of fresh air showing-various-fabric-and-sewing-techniques wise. Especially when combined with your as always immaculate commentary!!
It's really interesting that you spoke about the different meanings of chrysanthemums, and I think that carries over the use of white as well. In some places in Asia white is worn as a color of mourning, and white flowers are used almost exclusively at funerals, whereas in North America, (and especially in North American Christianity) wearing white is associated with more joyous occasions like weddings, baptisms, and communion,
this video gave me life!!!! i'm probably going to be redundant with some others comments but I absolutly wanna share theories about this collection because you engaged with the thematics of these garnements so deeply I was almost surprised that you didn't go for the obvious "white canvas" meaning of making an all-white collection... I'm just really fascinated by the fact that these are both incredible haute couture garnement but also /screens/ which gives it so much more meaning, it truly feels like a celebration of imagination, of cinema, of storytelling in a time when we feel cornered by real-world circumstances. It's all-white... but it doesn't /feel/ minimalistic because there's so much room for us to project our own emotions and ideas onto these blank screens. Ngl I also think "Of Grace and Light" is a genius title for this and you truly nailed it when you went into that color theory segment (it seems like the usual valentino rainbow of colors just went through a prism to be sublimated into this all white moment) even though it also seems to hint at religious themes, some of the looks reminded me of communion outfits... Idk at this point I think any interpretation is valid, in the end I'm just in awe that this managed to be so dreamy and awe-inspiring, to genuinely communicate emotions, despite the fact that the world is such a bleak dumpster fire rn. and also lowkey i'm glad that it can be both deep AND beautiful in a very palatable way bc some couture houses *coughs* managed neither of the two in 2020
something interesting you mentioned was the use of white to symbolize there being a color. i think you’re onto something because in the video valentino put out, they project light and color onto the dresses almost as a way of saying “the colors are here. they never left. have hope” love these collection analysis vidoes, luke. keep it up man🦦👍

Im sure you know this by now but Luca Guadagnino (director of call me by your name and suspiria's remake) directed a short film in collaboration and inspired by Pier Paolo Piccioli's work. You should totally review the costumes made by Piccioli. The film is called The Staggering Girl.
I would love to see this collection on display at the Met or somewhere so I could just stare at the detail of these dresses until my eyeballs fall out. So so beautiful. And you’re right - this collection has a soul like no other I’ve seen in a long time.
Your videos are so fantastic and informative - thank you. I've really gained new appreciation for designers and have been introduced to so many I'd never heard of before. As for this show, my god, the majority of it is simply gorgeous.
The fabric is printed and dyed in quantities specifically for the designs they will be bringing to life. Some fabric stores in NYC buy off and then sell the remaining fabric bolts after the designers no longer need them or just have wayyy too much excess. And yeah, the pandemic has really slowed down that fabric dying and printing part of the textiles industry. I ordered some custom printed fabric earlier this year for a project I'm working on and it took over a month to be done and then mailed. It was just a fat quarter. So I'd imagine that designers like Valentino submitting orders for hundreds of yards of custom fabric would take FOREVER.
I can see how, using the projections at the beginning of the show, Pierpaolo is demonstrating the current view of society being focused solely on color. By then switching to showcase the looks in the monochromatic format, he’s showcasing a vision for how he wants humanity to view one another, simply as humans. Also the projections could be showcasing to clients that the textiles can be customized to whatever pattern is desired rather than just the textile presented.
The Valentino Haute Couture Fall 2020 collection was my favorite this season. The gowns and the presentation were simply breathtaking. Additionally, I really appreciate your reviews because it always helps me to gain a new perspective and deeper understanding of these collections.
I don’t think that Pierpaolo made this collection to be focused on clothes. He wanted the film to show the message. In this collection he referred to his previous work I guess because he doesn’t want us to focus much on the clothing rather than the projections, the film, the movement and the music that was chosen very carefully.. He wanted to give us a surreal experience and it worked 🤍 I also don’t understand why designers aren’t serving us like the way Pierpaolo did!! I mean he used his imagination to produce this magic.. in the other hand they gave us look books 🙂
not to be disrespectful at all but all the while you were unravelling the poignant symbolism of a crysanthemum I just couldn't stop thinking that it also means bussy in chinese gay slang and that for some reason I know this 😞

Also "black" is not a color/colorless. A black object absorbs all colors in the spectrum and reflects SOME. Not the same as absence of color, per say, though the absence of LIGHT is darkness/black. White is also not a color, it is however the combination of all colors in the visible light spectrum. Though on an object, white is the absence of color, while black is a mixture of colors. Also, without light there is no darkness but without darkness there isn't a real sense of light so both shades - black & white - are dependent of each other to be appreciated. In these polarizing ways, black & white are almost the same thing, but can't be perceived the same way in the same form simultaneously. Valentino juxtaposing all white(a shade which reflects a combination of all colors) against a completely black(a shade which absorbs all colors) backdrop might be symbolic of hope - a visual response to the pandemic and message to consumers that there is "LIGHT" in the "DARKNESS" even though that may appear shrouded in the all encompassing darkness. That both things are inevitable parts of existence. That we will have to face dark times, but there is always light at the end. There is hope.
In Chinese and Japanese culture the chrysanthemum is the symbol of the Emperor, and is The Emperor of flowers. In most south asian cultures, white represents sadness and mourning.
Idk, if valentino was trying to portray that, but i just felt like that.
the genius here is that the elongation of the pieces meant true social distancing while making the garment. chefkiss.
