When you're dealing with a car manufacturer that has been around as long as BMW, you can't help but appreciate the little things. The E39 M5 is just one of those little things we are going to take the time to appreciate today. This driver-oriented luxury sedan made its first waves in 1998, does it stand the test of time? Love the car soo much !!
I'm afraid it will become overrated ,go high on price and won't get the chance to buy one 😬.
any chance of a so you want an audi s3 video?
Q50 video already plsss
Yooooo plz do the g8
Even if it wasn’t a M series the E39 is so sick
540 is apparently more desirable
I own a E39 525D and I wish I could get it to slide, but i can't since it got an open diff xD But yeah, the E39 M5 would be perfect !

Alex: so you want an E39--
Me: Yes. Take money.
E39 looks great, sounds great, only comes in a 6spd, and it’s actually pretty reliable (for a bmw) especially the 528i or 530i. Best bmw ever imo, I don’t think bmw will make another 5 series that looks as good as a e39
The front and the back 😍😍😍😍, it got me instantly hooked on to the car
@@santbhindranwalejidefanche8767 those body lines too, love the cars looks, not too in your face but doesn’t look lame either
The e39s also came in a 5speed auto. My 530i has a 5 speed. And early years it was a 4 speed auto
@@nathaniel03sim when I said only comes in manual, I was referring to the m5s which only came in manual
What about E34 M5 thats my fav M5
E39 540 gang! Never clicked on a FI video this fast
Anyone interested in an E39 M5, but is also a broke boi, look into 540s. Trust me. Bought mine back in April to replace my E90 and I’ve never looked back. One hell of a car and aside from the $60 fill ups every week and a half, she’s been good to me and my wallet.
I love mine too! Such a smooth cruiser.
How much did u pay for it?
@@chiefbeef2059 Daniel or I? 🤣
@@Latinblood59 I was talking to Daniel lol but how much did u pay for ur e39?
@@chiefbeef2059 I lucked out on mine. $4500 for a 2003 e39 540 MSport with 89k miles. It is Auto though.
I grew up in our family’s e39, my parents got the car shortly before I was born and today I take care of the car, it may be just a 520i but I love the car even though it’s maintenance isn’t that cheap and there are many things to be done and repaired, but I’m thankful that you show some love for the e39, many people seem to forget about it 🥰💙
The e39 is in my opinion the most aesthetic, most beautiful car ever made, so happy to own one :)
The E39 is, and will always be the best 5 series.........period☝🏼
Same as the e46 will always be the best 3 series

This car could be missing a wheel and I’d still wanna drive it
When I started working at a BMW dealer, a co-worker and I did a new car pre-delivery inspection on a 2002 M5. We test drove it, he did a burn out at a red light and we got pulled over by a cop. No ticket, just a warning. Still love E39 M5 to this day.
I own a 2002 540i...fun to drive and handle on the road. Visibility eye to road ratio is amazing. You can see all around you. Got it in 2005 and still own it today 11/03/2020. I've done all the service myself without having to get it from any mechanic or dealer. They are fairly easy to work on if you are willing to buy the tools and learn how to fix it. If you want to take it to a mechanic or a dealer to fix it every time...this is not the car for you. If you do that you better be making at least 80k a year, cheap ass girlfriend, no kids, and no mortgage to worry about because this model will make you go broke AF faster than a speeding bullet. About $190 or more now an hour for labor plus parts. Because, just as fast as you made it to the party on it...it will start leaking as soon as you park because of the idiot driving you did on the way to the party...or wherever you go...cause they are fun to drive. Currently working on the chain tensioner since my chains started to rattle and if that does not fix the problem then the guides will need to be replaced and that is a fkn major fix I haven't done yet for an 18 year old car. Oh well fun times. Oh you can drive these in the rain at 90 miles an hour with good all weather tires and you can change lanes like nothing....not so well in the snow or ice....I went 147mph once at 3am. No cops no traffic. I got home in 5 minutes from downtown Dallas to Plano. While I was going that fast a black Murcielago out of nowhere passed me like nothing. BTW ...these cars are chick magnets. Post it Notes with telefone numbers will be thrown at you if you roll down the windows...maybe after this pandemic you get to experience that. BTW I am not selling mine since it is too easy to work on to give up for a super high tech full of problems new models.
Dream car 100%. I drove an E36 M3 for 6 years, knowing I would eventually go for one of these.
still waiting for the “So you want a Lockheed U-2 spy plane”
I just bought a e39 540i with the 6 speed manual. I’m so hyped. It’s one of my dream cars. I found it today and bought it today.
The best car I've ever owned. Still need to supercharge it. Goal is to get it to 600 hp. Then the dream is complete.
never thought a car I own would be in a so you want episode. happy to see it! the community is amazing if anyone does get into one of these cars.
The only rule of owning an e39 m5 is that you can NEVER change wheels. Nothing looks good on this car besides own wheels.
This. As someone looking for wheels right now for my swap-project 525i, I've looked at maybe 2 to 3 hundred different wheels and am still going back to the Style 65's I had on my old 528i.
that's Your opinion. there's sick wheels that are very clean on E39 M5. LM's being just one of them. But there a few.
When I owned my e39 M5, I came to the same conclusion. There are many great BMW wheels, regardless, BMW nailed the choice for the e39 M5.
I disagree. The front wheels must be changed out for two more 18x9.5 Style 65s. 275mm tires all round look so good and grip so well.
Couldn't agree more. My M5 had 19" RIAL Daytona Race rims when I bought it, they looked alright but the first thing I did was find a decent set of stock rims.
I have a 6 speed, Oxford green metallic, E39 540i. Some stuff you can DIY successfully some stuff you can’t. But I just keep putting money into it and don’t regret it. 120k and still going strong. It’s my baby and I’ll hold onto as long as possible. E39 is one of the best BMW ever made no matter which model you own.
I had an e39 540i, hell of a car but it ate my entire wallet 😭
Sooooo... when are we getting "so you want a S15 Silvia"
When they become legal in the States probably.
I managed to find and buy 03" E39 540i Champagne II/ Msport/Individual with only 51.500 miles on it with one owner + full BMW dealer history. What a car it is, this is my first ever BMW btw.
thought I was dreaming when I seen this. Love my E39 540i
I just picked one up today and it's as good as everyone says they are. Love these cars
Bought my 2000 M5 from my long time good friend of over 30 years just about 6 months ago. The car was presale inspected and was I aware of the few issues it had before hand. It was owned by his dad since 2008 and he inherited it last year after his dad's passing. He needed some extra $ and when he mentioned that he was going to sell it I told him I'd buy it in a heart beat... Black on black, 14 year service history along with being in very good condition and at 114,XXX miles I paid $23,000 and didn't feel ripped off... at 6 months in, I'm $7,000 in but half of that is wheel and tires, the other half was mechanical...There's a short laundry list of things that need to be addressed but nothing major... Happy as a clam with my purchase.
That's awesome! We want to see it! DM us on IG fam!
Bad piston rings in the '00 S62 🤦♂️
I think the stock style 65s are beautiful and nothing can replace their look in my eyes.

I hever had money for a m5😔
I’m actually liking this style of BMW, your rubbing the spot Alex ... Keep it up..
I have a 540i sport manual, absolutely love it.
I don't own an M5, but i do love my 2001 E39 530i. I drive it daily, and it it always brings a smile on my face, no matter what is going on in my head. The car is in pretty good condition mechanically but needs some aesthetical work... I plan to fully repaint it and restore it to mint condition by next years time...
Literally my dream car, I’d keep it all stock too👍
YES! Finally 🙌
Kinda looks like a skyline with the headlights. That's my reason it looks so good from the front. I had a 02 540i and people always complimented me how well I made it look. It broke down at 210k with the timing chain rattling but got the kit for like 400 and once I replaced good as new again and ran up to 240k until I just sold it...BIG MISTAKE! I miss that damn car everyday and regret it. The exhaust note with a magnaflow shorty and the y resonator delete made it sound so good. I can't imagine how an m5 is.
To me 540 sounds better then m5 does
Less bangy and more grunty v8 sound
Bought mine last year with secondary cats delete y resonator delete and some sporty muffler in the back
Low throttle sings like symphony
At Wot it’s wildly raspy between 1.8-2.5k then starts to scream
Wanna go with race cats for emissions check
And custom build a electric cutout next to the sport muffler then being
Able to switch from race cats with sport muffler to race cats with straight pipe, as said in the video a V8 needs straight pipes lol
AYYYYYYYYYY He actually did it!
Thanks alex! :)
Such a clean understated car
Man, Alex has the best narration for me
Alex is why I'm subscribed
You cannot resist or ignore this car! Everyone time I come across one my eyes get glued and head spins in the direction it's heading in. You'd have to be stupid to not notice this car. Perfect piece of German engineering!
I bought a used one of these with 20k on it in 2004, I ran it flat out until 2010 with nothing more than a couple of light bulb replacements. To this day it remains my favourite car ever. It was a beast, handled beautifully, seriously quick and gorgeous to look at, it's the only car I ever regret selling.
the best description of a car I have ever heard in my life😍🤯🥶😎
I owned one for 3 years. A beautiful LeMans Blue over Caramel extended leather example. It was a phenomenal car that performed up to the hype. Unfortunately it was also an expensive car to keep in pristine condition. Most of the expenses were replacement of every sensor that drives the ECU, chasing drive line vibrations and chasing what ended up being a bad throw out bearing. Once sorted it was a dream to drive, powerful, great sounding, comfortable, sharp, and classy. Almost every person that rode in the car stated that it had the nicest interior they had ever seen in a car.
Ultimately the draw to a more nimble smaller car bit me. I bought a 2013 Mini S JCW. It was good but even more frighteningly expensive to maintain. The Naturally Aspirated engine called and I settled on the stellar e36 M3. Far more reliable and less expensive to maintain than either of the other two, with the added benefit of one of the best ballanced chassis any one has ever built.
e39 v8s Don't wait until 100K to replace the timing chain tensioner. Do it at 70K... takes 5minutes, $80 and a 19mm socket. Now hold the old one and forcefully cycle the piston. watch it projectile vomit sludge then commit to 3K mile oil changes. Every 30K pull it and cycle the piston to regain lost range of motion
finally!! i own a 530i, and this video is so perfect
Love my E39 M5, I've had it for over 5 years now and will keep it forever. It really doesn't get much better as a do it all type of car IMO.
Yours is clean bro, I will never ever sell mine either. That's the biggest cardinal sin. Of course I didn't tell the guy who sold it to me that. Lol. Had mine for 5 years too. Going to start building mine to 600 hp and buy an F10 M5 for my daily. That's the dream anyway.
I want a first car, and im looking for first car that i can lear on? Should i get one?
Still my favorite generation 🔥 E39

Thanks for the great video - informative and engaging as always! My first car was an oxford green over beige e39 528i. Someday soon I would love to satisfy my dream of owning the big dog of them all; the e39 M5
The “carbon build up” issue does not affect performance; it only means the catalytic converters don’t work as well on cold starts. It’s also improved in 01+ models.
True, timing chain guides is a thing regardless of year of production but most likely to occur on VERY high milage cars, a friend of mine changed his at 180000 miles and they were prefect still. Vanos and to an extent rod bearings are the big ticket items.
I'm on my 2nd M5.
@@PowerslideSWE Vanos noises don’t cause performance issues, and it’s rare that it fails. Rod bearings are the killer. Change them every 150k or so.
@@computiNATEor I didn't mean that Vanos is making noise, it does btw, they can however fail in quite alot of other ways and that will indeed cause issues , mine is currently stranded with as of yet un-diagnosed most likely vanos problems.
@@PowerslideSWE Probably a bad solder joint or solenoid. Swap solenoids, see if it follows. Swap/change CPS sensors. It’s not a terribly complex system compared to modern cars, but it’ll baffle new mechanics. Source: I rebuilt my S62 last summer.
The song on the intro just gets me everytime 😁
Bro great video
I don’t always drool over M5s, but when I do it’s Dos VTECHs

I have been owning a E39 525i for 5 years now and i love it. Modified almost everything on it even to the point, that i fitted it with a M5 interior. But i still find myself looking for a M5 all the time... The thing is I am a student and cant afford an M, and i also know, that my M54B25 probably will last for ever...
Maybe one day ill be able to afford both :)
Anyone who doesn’t already own an E39. I own one and if you’re even a little picky with wheels and fitment, you’re going to need the hub bore custom drilled out to a 74.1mm so they fit on the E39! Just a heads up for anyone looking for one ❤️
Omggg thank you
That fart noise literally demonstrated how immature I still am by how hard I laughed every time.
Finally an e39 watch this car is going to get more popular now super underrated car

So you want to make a car i was thinking about getting and u make the price rise. Appreciate that bud now i cant get one in decent shape
Yooooo FINALLY 😭
It amazes me how many people assume the timing chain guides are a problem on the S62 because it's a big problem on the M62. The timing chain setup is a far better dual row setup on the S62 compared to the M62. They do have plastic guides that wear, but far slower. There are very few reported cases of timing chain guide failure on S62s.
Biggest key to owning an e39 M5, research the forums. M5board in particular is a great spot for info, good well researched info from people that actually own the cars.
My second car 3+ years ownership with my second M5..... everything you said in the video is right for most part ☝️No guides and chains DOES NOT fail super early as to m62 engines, why ? We have a double chain, M5 e39 is worlds FIRST car to have angel eyes, Worlds fastest sedan at the time.... ☝️first V8 in the M car production car.... and the only car that came in stages from Dinan which is Stage 1,2,3........ ☝️also e39 M5 is most likely The most reliable car out of ALL M cars Ever built, No subframe issues, rod bearings, throttle actuators, vanos, chains and guides, smg pumps and clutch, valve seals, turbos and much more ! This is why people love it ! And if you want more more get a blower ( what I did) and done deal 650 hp e85 and your set!
That's a dream car for me right there, ever since I heard it and saw it on beemerfam
Should just do a video, "So you think you can afford a clean E39 M5"

What a great looking and fun to drive car! Worth every penny of maintenance it needs, witch is a lot lol
Vanos, timing chain, guides, clutch, cooling system and the infamous bmw oil leaks and ccv/osv failures. catch can installed first week and intake is still bone dry
Now it’s incapacitated for a few months due to vanos distribution piece broke of with the solenoid, no worries turns out mine is a pre 09/99 build witch have the non Teflon Coated vanos distribution pieces, needs replacing anyways to get working vanos and restore the bottom end torque, never been happy to break something until now,
That’s another $500 in parts into it.. good time to fix all timing chain stuff and ccv (crank case ventilation) osv (oil separator valve) change all gaskets that leak oil
All in all probably 5k into it before she’s all finished mechanically and esthetically, but it’s one of those cars that won’t depreciate much if kept nice
