    I remember being in university years ago and seeing the prices of F355s being $60k and 996 Turbos being $40k and thinking "when I graduate and have money, these cars will be even more affordable for me." Now that I have graduated and have money, I can't afford these cars nor a home.

    I’ll never forget the day I was driving down an Austrian mountain pass in 1997 when a 355 came around a corner going up in full drift, smoke peeling off the tires and a smile on the drivers face that sticks with me to this day.

    If you want to avoid the engine out for MOST things, get a 360. If you want to avoid it altogether, get a 430. I went with the 430 not just because it was the Ferrari V8 that came out when I got my license so it was a “poster car” for me, but also because you can pretty easily work on it yourself… which saves you a metric fuckton of money. You can also do a manual swap yourself for $10k if you want a gated manual without paying the premium for the stock ones. But a lot of the feeling of the 355 is still present in the 430… the interior is “far away” and spacious, it all feels light and delicate, it “dances” on the road… If you don’t mind the engine out maintenance, go for the 355. If you want things slightly more modern and reliable, 360. And even more so? 430.

      I absolutely agree with you regarding the 430. I have one. An 07 F1 Spider. Modern enough, but still organic.
      I didn’t want a 458 because it is overly computerized, almost feeling like an arcade game, and the 355, although stunning, is a maintenance nightmare. Also, the interior is lacking, comparatively speaking.
      The 430 , for me, really hits the sweet spot.
      Two issues to contend with;
      1) I live on Vancouver Island, and there are no certified Ferrari technicians. 2) my 430 is dark grey in colour, so not too flashy, however, some people look at me in a negative light. Conversely, I also have a Porsche 993, and virtually every time I drive it, people have their cameras out, and give me the thumbs up.

    I have a 348TS with a Tubi exhaust and it’s the best driving (deafening) experience of all time. Can’t believe I own it honestly. The 348 steering is heavy until you’re moving, and then has that typical Ferrari lightness with lovely feel. It also smells incredible, transports me back to being in a workshop with my dad every time I sit in it. Honestly these things are magic, delicate, dramatic, small, complete timewarp. Wouldnt swap it for anything

      @@remingtonsteele3220 The belts are pretty conventional but IMO the thermal environment is not. A freshly parked F355 will turn your garage into a sauna for hours. They run HOT. To be fair, if you're going to lift the car every year for annual service, you can probably inspect the belts yearly too.

    • @remingtonsteele3220
      @remingtonsteele3220 20 днів тому

      @@canto_v12 No hotter than a regular car given the laws of thermodynamics and ICE. However, unlike a regular car that has vast amounts of other components shoved in an engine bay to absorb heat, the F355 is pretty much just open space so that heat, rather than being absorbed into the surrounding chassis/body and components is radiated away. I would be willing to bet an F355 cools down much faster than a car where all the components are heat absorbing.

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 20 днів тому

      @ thermostat wise yes, but since most cars needed aftermarket headers (few of which have actual header shields or blankets), it gets way hotter in there than it should.

'94) model, Berlinetta, red over black, six-speed gated manual, the euro-spec clear front blinker lenses, no Challenge grill in the back like some people do, etc. But he had a full Tubi exhaust, which this one doesn't sound like it has. Funny how impactful that was, now you have a cybertruck stomping on today's sports cars in drag races. The bottom line - nobody wants to be driving a Syclone vs a 348. The 348 is far better experience. Just about everything pre-2020 is going to seem slow. So now if you look at a more modern "classic" it's about having a manual transmission, something that sounds good, feels quick-ish but not criminally fast - in my opinion the 348's, 355's, and 360's are the best options for that.

    The intro was indeed quite funny I agree with the other comments but what i’m not seeing enough of is appreciation to the whole throttle house team on how good they shoot and edit these videos. I feel like I’m in person experiencing the car with them the way they edit all of the shots in, from the back so we can hear the exhaust, the climbing rpms on the gauge, Thomas pushing the clutch in and grabbing another gear, it’s all extremely well shot and made. I never fully realized it until this video since I’ve been watching a lot of extra throttle house non sports car reviews from them recently, but this video is extremely well made. Thomas and James’ reactions to the car and driving experience really put it all over the top and you can tell when they are genuinely enjoying a really special car. Great video as always and can’t believe I’ve been watching you guys this long and just now understood all of the other hard work going on behind the scenes to give us the realest experience and review of a car without ever seeing it in person. Thanks again guys and keep it up I love watching all of the videos

    F355 will go down in history as the absolute sweet spot in the V8 lineup. The 355 engine might be one of the most special ever put into a street Ferrari aside from F50. It along with F50 still remains the only 5 valve, titanium rods, titanium valves, nikasil coated cylinder engines outside of Formula One of the time. The level of special is very very high and the small service fees definitely worth what you get from that engine.

    Asides from the engine-out service that you should do every 3-5 years, depending on how many miles you drive it, repairs can be a pain. The problem is that when parts need to be replaced, good luck finding them. You'll have to buy used ones and hope that they're not also defective. If you're willing to put all that aside, this is one of the most glorious classic Ferraris to drive, especially with a gated shifter and a Capristo exhaust with high-flow cats. The looks, the sound, the shifting, even the leather all make you feel like you're in something really special. Thanks for the great review!

    The engine out is blown way out of proportion. It comes out quite quickly in one big assembly together with the whole rear sub-frame, suspension, etc. It was made to come out easy it just looks dramatic with the car cut in half but when you commit to the process it is not a big deal.

      The old guy that works on my Fiat 124 had a 355 in for a belt service when I picked my car up. Asked him how much it was going to be. Over $5k. My total bill for a brake system rebuild, fuel injection rail replacement, head gasket replacement, alignment, and a handful of electrical gremlins: $2k.

      The difference is in the 1995 (first year) cars and all the others. You can tell because they have 2 MAF sensors. Those are indeed OBD1 cars and are considered the best and fastest versions. It is not so much a European and Rest of World (ROW) thing.

    • @pete2072
      @pete2072 7 місяців тому

      The '95 US cars have the motronic 2.7 as well, with 2 mafs and the extra power. The only difference row cars had was slightly lighter bumpers and doors, and no airbags, maybe 100lbs lighter total, if that. Not a big difference. They all went to motronic 5.2 (single maf, obd2) and airbags in '96.

    I used to be a machinist at a motor works place and we did a bit of work with exotic car engines amongst other stuff. I remember walking in one day and seeing a set of F355 heads in for recon on the shelf; very distinctive due to having 5 valves per cylinder and just a beautiful piece of metal in all. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to work on them, but I do know the bill for 2 head skims, 40 valve stems, 40 lightweight sodium filled valves and the labour to cut and lap them in was substantial

    Yes, the 355 is a classic Ferrari. It's a total shame the upkeep is so crippling. They were coming down nicely in price due to the nightmare maintenance cost.. but of course now that everyone is searching for manual vehicles, this has shot back up in price. There are a number of things I would change to make it look a little more appealing but again, that's personal taste.
    I still think the bargain to get would be the F430 in manual. Hopefully the world keeps ignoring this model so prices start to drop to more reasonable levels.. 🙂
