The E39 M5 is one of the most iconic and well-respected M-Cars ever built. At least that’s what everyone told me. Being an AMG guy I had never really considered joining the other team but after a few talks with my good friend OJ Lopez from Fluid MotorUnion, and hearing from you guys, I had to pull the trigger. In this video, you will find out the condition of a 400K mile 2000 BMW M5. I’ll show the car inside and out and talk about what the previous three owners had to repair and replace to keep her going this long. Of course, I’ll tell you what I paid and you’ll also get a unique perspective of this car coming from an AMG enthusiast. Oh and it shoots flames!

Great deal or ripoff, hmmmm, too soon to say, depends on how long it takes to get it to the level you want and how much additional that will cost you. The vehicle is one of BMW's most reliable ever made, but that doesn't mean you'll have no problems, as you drive home showed. I'd say you've got a better than 60/40 chance it's a great deal.

I've rebuilt several SMG transmissions and they are more or less a manual trans through and through just computer controlled but still mechanically shifted. They are pretty tuff as long as something catastrophic doesn't happen to them it's usually a slave bad or a position switch. Really easy to fix and diagnose.

About the differential, I had an E39 540i. My differential started whining after a while. This can happen if you do a lot of burnouts or donuts. But you should be happy to know that it's fairly cheap to buy a used one or if you have the money buy a brand new one. Great car, awesome price I'm very happy for you. The E39 M5 and the E46 M3 are two of my dream cars. I just don't like the fact that people supercharge them so often. You're going to modify an E46 or an E39, just do things right and turbo charge it. For me I think that might ruin it, well, maybe not the E46 M3 but, the E39 M5 should stay naturally aspirated in my opinion. And that V8 needs to really Rev from time to time. After all it does have a problem with carbon buildup. And also the vanos does need to be maintained. Other than that, this is a great, fun, reliable car that you can comfortably drive with 3 passengers.4 if they are short....

The E39 5 series is probably one of the greatest cars ever created, extremely well engineered, styled and put together. Very comfortable, very reliable, very connected and communicative to the driver, very economical (at least the regular straight-six ones, the v8s and the m5s take a little more moolah but for the performance it's cheap!) and they just ooze style and class! Mercedes E-classes of the age (e39 in europe was 1995-2003) were also mostly classy, reliable and comfortable, however BMW really took it farther with handling, road feel and sportiness. The E60 is a great car, especially the 6 cylinder manual ones, and while the styling was very criticized at the time they really were a bit before their time. The E60s are beautiful cars and they almost live up to the E39, but that little bit of extra build quality and feel that the E39s provide is something special. Find a well taken care of E39 with the lowest mileage you can and you will be happy!

The seller was soooo shady, he didn’t have to be, long story, just weird. Anyway, took a huge gamble, and love the car. It feels like a 2 ton go cart. Dinan upgrades include headers, full exhaust, strut tower brace, and carbon fiber air intake. Bought it for $14k, and have no regrets...except for it getting backed into 2 weeks after I moved to Chicago, another long story, but new bumpers front and rear, a fresh new white wrap, and in the process of replacing all fluids for clean slate to my favorite car ever. Can’t wait to get back on the road with her.

At each destination full maintenance was performed, so there are 75 normal maintenance jobs. This is BMW's best ever sedan. It's all original, but I'll do a muffler delete - that's it! Had the same airbag light issue with my 2006 E53 X5. Was a bad seat sensor pad which was not covered under the recall in my case as mine was a late model 06. Installed a bypass box along with a seatbelt warning bypass so now the car thinks there is always someone in the seat. In my case, my son drives the car now and a small child will never be in the passenger seat if the airbag ever deploys. Box was about $40 with seat belt sensor bypass from eBay sent from Ireland. Works flawlessly. Good luck with the M5. Awesome car. I recently bought a 2008 Volvo S60 from my independent mechanic with 154,400 miles on it...as well with an extensive service history and all the records. If properly maintained, these cars will run for a very long time.

In the UK to buy engine oil for M5 costs around £200 a loan because it's very special oil but people can't afford to buy the original oil and they put cheap oil that's too thick to circulate around the engine it must be some kind of thin oil that's very protective

2000 M5 owner since 2010, gave $13,000 for mine with 140,000 miles, now approaching 250,000 miles. Still gets 19-21 mpg, gets driven at least 2-3 times a week, so more or less daily driver for me. She's not perfect, rust in the left rear, just had the front fascia and lower fender liners replaced, getting ready to go in to the shop for the first real work she's had in 3 years. When I bought the car, I told my wife I wanted a car I could live with for at least 10 years. that was 14 years ago and I don't want to let this thing go. Still satisfying to turn that key every...single...time. She still moves. I don't think this car knows it weighs 4,000 pounds. Feel free to check the following, but if I understand correctly, in the 4 years the E39 was brought to the US (2000-2003), only 16,000 were M5s. There aren't many left. I say good deal, although if you have to rebuild that engine, it's gonna be a $20,000 bill...but you'll probably never have to rebuild it again...

First upgrade should be a good suspension, given how much you are bouncing in the seat those coilovers are junk.. The amazing thing about the e39 m5 was how good the stock suspension was when new. Felt nice and composed on the street but worked great on track. Few people actually experienced that magic as the stock shocks would need replacing around 50-75k. The only coilovers I've experienced that were truly a upgrade were KW V2 or V3. And oh, saw blue smoke on that Accel clip, which means scoring or worn rings on that engine.

I recently picked up a 2000 M5 with 107,000 miles for $7,200. When I bought it there were some glaring issues such as the FSU was causing the blower motor to run even with the key off, and it had a terrible misfire and hesitation around 3,000 rpm. New MAFs fixed the engine drivability problems, and now it runs great! It still has a sizable list of mostly small issues I’m working out, but nothing too serious and it should be great when it’s done! I’m looking forward to seeing you tinker with yours now too!

My F10 M5 just had the bottom-end go after 46,000 miles. Never raced, and rarely driven hard - had a 700bhp remap/exhaust. Before that it needed all new coil packs at 40k, new Vanos at 38k. Sunroof, air-con both stopped working reliably around 30k - luckily I'm in UK so don't give a shit about that most of the time. Was fun, but expensive to run.

Doesn't matter if its high mileage or salvage title, everything that's outside of the motor is pretty easy to replace, you just need the right tools.

New it was 53K, bought it in 2007 for 17K with 43K miles.
In the past 4 years I have redone the entire cooling system, timing chain including guides and tensioner, all gaskets including rear main, and while the transmission was down replaced the clutch too, although it didn't need one.
This year I have replaced the entire front suspension including struts, brake master cylinder and booster and the rear shocks and control arms.
Engine work was done at a dealer, all suspension and miscellaneous work done by a friend who is a master BMW tech at his shop.
For the first 10 years it was oil changes and tires (plus the occasional window regulator and an alternator.
She now has 210K miles on her.
My maintenance records total almost 40K, including tires and brakes.
Total cost of ownership over 14 years is $340 per month, she runs like new and I don't have to drive a Toyota.

Wow, what great shape and what a pretty Bimmer! One thing that annoies me to no end, people who cannot afford the upkeep and routine maintenance. People, just because you purchased a Bimmer 2000, 01, 02 or 03 for only $1,500 does not mean you can afford the maintenance, oil change with oil filter every 3 mo or 3K miles, Mobile one fully synthetic, $70-$90 and that is a DIY. Tune up, $450-$600, plugs wires. So, unless you can afford a $100 oil change, do NOT buy a BMW, they're just way too expensive for you. I just cannot stand the sight of one that has a BMW and it smoke is pouring out, burning oil, exhaust leaks, engine straight 6 only running on 1 cylinder or V8 engine but only 1 cylinder is firing. I just don't know about some people, for those who earn a low pay, why they insist on buying a high end car. The same goes when purchasing a house. Some goes when purchasing a home. They purchase a huge 5 BD 7 BA house, and the house is mostly empty because they cannot afford anything else...

Just a little tip, I had a similar problem with the SRS in my e39 540 and it turned out to be corroded contacts, fuses and basically the whole fuse block under the carpet of the front passenger seat. Usually a rear door seal or something similar leaking under the carpet/insulation and getting to that box. Pretty rare as far as wagons go with regards to the manual transmission. It was a pretty sorted car. I wanted to love it but I didn’t. I didn’t like the way it drove, and I didn’t like the cost of repairs on a nearly 20 year old car. Everything was too expensive. My fiancé hated that car. So I sold it and bought her a nice wedding ring. Long story short, I made the right decision because we are now married.
Your M5 sounds unbelievable though. Good deal.
