haha yes, those are Kevlar boats. To be honest it was a bit of a surprise when we arrived at the outfitter - we were anticipating, and would have preferred, to paddle plastic canoes, but this is what they had for us. That being said, it all worked out for the best and we just had to be extra careful when choosing our lines. There were a small handful of rapids that we had to portage because of the delicate boats, but most of the river was still runnable with careful scouting. And while most of the portages were short, the light boats were appreciated whenever we did have to carry.
Great trip and I liked the video. I was just saying to my canoe partner that I needed to pick your brain on this trip as I planned to do it this year or next. And then boom, a video of it. Awesome! Looks like you rented the canoes, didn't know that was an option that changes my planning a bit.
@@TomBeakbaneToronto Yes that's definitely possible. We'd have done the same, except we were flying home so it wouldn't have worked. If taking the train both ways then using your own canoes makes a lot of sense. Have fun, it's a beautiful River!
Great trip and video, thanks for sharing. I own the same canoe though it's mostly flat water, it has flexed its way over a number of surprise hard hits on rocks and came out fine. I'm wonder how your crew liked them on a rapid filled river trip like this? Thanks.
Doing Bloodvein this next summer. Flying in from Bissett probably further east to Murdock lake. Were those canoes Kevlar? I was thinking maybe old Royalex canoes from them but they looked pretty shiny.
Yes they were kevlar boats. Probably wouldn't be our first choice for a river like this, but it's what the outfitter had for us when we arrived. They worked out surprisingly well and we were still able to run the majority of the rapids, albeit with careful scouting. There were a few rapids we opted to portage due to the kevlar boats, but they weren't as much of a liability as we initially feared.
Nice video guys! Come on back up and do the headwaters of the Bloodvein starting at Knox, up to Larus and west to Artery. Check out my free download of a map for WCPP and check in with Albert at Goldseekers in Red Lake. Cheers
Hi. Looks like an amazing trip!! Can i ask how much the float plane charter cost and who you went through? I was hoping to plan a trip but I'm worried that the cost of a charter is out of our budget.
I forget exactly what the cost per person was, but we used Simpson Air to fly us from Fort Simpson to Virginia Falls. They were great to deal with and can get you a quote for their current pricing.
lol, just realized I replied to the wrong video :) We used Simpson Air when paddling the Nahanni, not the Bloodvein. Doh. Our air charter for the Bloodvein was arranged by Albert at Goldseekers in Red Lake. Give him a call and he can help get you pricing and details for the trip.
My favorite river to hunt moose for the past 25 yrs.
Amazing adventure….
Been on the list for years! A beautiful edit! Thanks for this!
Are you shooting rapids in a Kevlar? Brave men are on this river! love it 🤘🏼

bes trip, have a nice day. :))
Looked like an awesome trip! Thanks for posting it.👍
Nice video, - nice Tour!!
I was also surprised to see the light canoes, but since everything is drop-and-pool, it could work.
Great trip video. I was fortunate enough to stay at Matawa Lodge (5:50) in 1991 on a fishing trip. It looks the same!
That's really cool, we wondered who it belonged to!

Yea man, we rented from Albert at Goldseekers. The Bloodvein was amazing - highly recommend checking it out sometime if it's on your list 👌👌
I’m going in 2025. Do you reckon it’s practical to bring Royalex canoes from TO on the train?
