    IS SUPERIOR THE WORLD'S BIGGEST LAKE?
    1:28:11 Superior is the world's biggest freshwater lake by surface area. Caspian Sea is bigger but it's just a part of the ocean that got disconnected and now has 1/3 of the salinity so I feel iffy about its classification as a lake. Some would argue that it's Lake Baikal which is much deeper and with more volume (though way less surface area) but that's not much good unless you own a submarine. "World's largest freshwater lake on earth by surface area" doesn't work in a title.

      You just reminded me of something: When I hiked the Appalachian Trail almost 30 years ago, I got to a shelter in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Biting gnats had been bothering all of us since we left Georgia. I went down to the stream pool water source, from the shelter to purify my night's supply of water for drinking and cooking. As I reached the pond, the gnats covered me from head to toe. It was miserable. Soon after, as my food was cooking, I wrote a limerick in the trail shelter logbook. It went,
      "The gnats are a problem, don't scoff.
      You need Deet, or some kind of Off.
      One little pesticle
      Bit my left testicle
      And now I am REALLY PISSED OFF!"
      A few monster hikers caught up to me and said they died laughing at my log post, and looked forward to catching up to meet me. They suffered the same thing as me. And appreciated my humor. I replied, "It's all what we make it. Gotta keep the goal in mind and laugh about the irritating stuff."
      Those guys finished. I didn't, because of a family event I stopped and got off the trail for. One day before I crap out, maybe, I'll hike the trail again. And finish.

    Your content is just "superior," literally! It just puts me at peace and in such a wonderful mood. You should consider turning your videos into Imax form. It would be splendid to see. With the music you add and the sound effects coming from the lake, birds, etc, it would be a hit. Thank you for letting me live my dreams vicariously through you. Your videography and storytelling are wonderful! I especially enjoy the closeups of flowers and critters. You carried me back nearly a half century to my younger days exploring the lakes and streams of southern Yukon and northern B.C. in my Folbot. I can barely walk now, and my eyesight is so poor I can hardly make out a squirrel in a tree, much less the stars on a clear night. But on my large computer monitor and speakers, your video brings to me the sights and sounds of nature I so love. The call of the loon, the slap of a beaver's tail, the lap of water on a rocky shore, wind in the canopy, the roar of breakers on a troubled lake. Thank you for enriching my life!
    I also appreciate your setting a good example of managing risk. Adventures are much more rewarding when you survive them. Hopefully your example will encourage young adventurers to exercise better judgement and live longer to share their tales.
    This was the first video of yours I have come across, but I certainly look forward to watching more. And, I will watch this one again. I was delighted to take the opportunity to subscribe. May your excursions be many, safe, and rewarding. May your memories be warm and satisfying, and may you always have someone you love, and who loves you, to share them with.

      @@LostLakes is there any possibility of getting your start point in rockport with pathing for the first set of islands? I would like to do a 5 day trip with my grandfather next summer to these island lakes, looks like an extremely scenic route, he loves climbing for views as well, these small peaks may add value for us. Let me know! Thanks

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 роки тому +1

      No problem. You can launch a canoe here: goo.gl/maps/3vC79jAGaTjfxLb49 and then cross to the islands anywhere but usually where the distance is minimized. BUT--given that I have no idea of your experience--keep in mind that this lake can be extremely dangerous to be on in any vessel and especially in an open canoe. And to make any open water crossings between islands you MUST have a dry or wet suit. The water is lethally cold even in summer and kills by incapacitation drowning in a few minutes as one's body loses control from the cold. So if you dump away from shore it can be deadly. Conditions change fast and it can be hard to plan a trip here if you don't live close because you might arrive or need to leave on a no-go day.

My Dad with other engineering professors and graduate students from the University of Michigan used to take the train to river crossings on the northern shore of Lake Superior and canoe camp their way down to the lake. There were often several portages and once they got to the lake it was a long paddle back to a town on the lake.

    My favourite lake .What I wouldn't give to go again. I did that section of Lake Superior several years ago. It's all wonderful. I cannot resist adding to my Superior rock collection whenever I visit. I was a bit worried the waves would get you when camped under the rock overhang! Magnificent last night.

    Jon, NatGeo may have the camera skills but they don't tell a story like you do. Thanks for filling a necessary nature gap in all of our lives and connecting us with our historic roots living from the land and exploring. I totally understand your curiosity. As for those souvenir rocks you might consider incorporating them into something like furniture or a picture frame with some clear marine epoxy.

      Editing is truly the most dreaded part of making videos! I have an editor for my channel. He prefers music overlay though my preferred format is raw sound. If it keeps me away from the computer for days on end per video, I will take it. I keep all the raw footage in the event I want to ever recut my own though. Up to 32 TB on the hard drives now.

    • @anhatur
      @anhatur 2 роки тому +1

      @@AnythingOutdoorswithSteve I had to look at what you have on your channel and can understand the editor. There's a couple of questions that needs to be answered when it comes to sound: Does it add to the story? Is it interesting? Is the audio of good technical quality, so that it can add to the story instead of distract from it? If you're serious about video, sound quality is a vital but hidden (thus often forgotten) part of it.
