To Caleb’s defense, laughing at the most uncomfortable morbid shit is a real “cope” response some people just have. As weird as it is. My fiancé has the same issue and it’s super weird, but sometimes our bodies respond to uncomfortableness in the weirdest ways.
I'm the same way. I can't help it, I know I'm not supposed to laugh, it's gotten me in trouble quite often honestly.
Yeah or awkward interactions
I believe it’s a coping mechanism to help with uneasiness and/or severe discomfort with a topic. I remember, once, feeling really guilty for getting so angry at a preteen girl/classmate for laughing in discomfort at a documentary discussing EDs that I was taking seriously, assuming she wasn’t. But she WAS, she was just extremely upset by it. Glad I didn’t say or do anything that could’ve made her feel worse! Always easy to assume the worst in others, may even be the Occam’s Razor, but I never like to attribute to callousness what could be miscommunication, mental illness, or other issue.
I like to imagine every time charlie is needed on the red thread he anamorphs into Caleb like a werewolf every week leaving a pile of black hair and a shredded white shirt in his wake

Cults are waaaaay more nuanced than a person who tells people what to do, they fall on a spectrum. The B.I.T.E. model is the best way to identify a cult. When the person(s) in charge control the member's behavior, controls the information they're allowed to have, controls their thoughts, and controls their emotions. A cult also doesn't have to fit all of these but falling into 2 or more of these categories is a good sign that you're dealing with a cult
This is important because so many people think that a cult is just one lunatic in charge who comes up with crazy rules and don't question anything else outside of that
Yeah I feel like they didn’t really look into the more fitting definition for “cult” that we use in most situations in the modern day.
I legit came down to the comments to see if anyone would mention the B.I.T.E model because I learned about it several months ago and it's so important to have in this episode for their discussions at the beginning. This comment needs to be pinned so that people can learn about that model and maybe recognize if they find themselves in such a situation.
Yep yep yep! A big aspect of them is control over the lives of the members. And it's not always obvious that a group is a cult - many deliberately target vulnerable people by offering help/community/whatever during a rough patch in life, and not reveal the more sinister controlling aspects until they've become more entangled with the group and it may be harder to leave
"Was that real life or was that a Simpsons episode?" is my favorite way to try to remember things

Cult experts disagree on small things around cults, but they all agree that cults are groups that control and abuse members. They can have one or multiple leaders. They can have a handful or millions of followers. They actually don't need to be religious, but most are. And you don't need to be stupid to fall for cults, just vulnerable. Cults actually prefer intelligent, able-bodied people with money because they have more resources to give the cult, are more successful recruiting more members, and are less likely to burn out of the cult.
So it would be argued LDS and Catholics fall under the cult umbrella, given those features?
So can we count WW2 Germany government as a cult? They even had esoteric beliefs and stuff like that
trying to isolate you from family and friends should always be a big red flag
You're almost correct. There is actually no real consensus on what a cult really is. There are a lot of experts that agree with a definition that Michael Langone is credited with, which is basically what you described but there are also experts that disagree with this definition. There is also Yinger's definition which has also been seen as deficient by the likes of Gordon Melton. If i remember correctly, the term NRM has been used to try and get away from all the negative connotations with the word "sect" and "cult" but is also seen as something insufficient to define all of these groups, so definitions are kinda chaotic at the moment, not like that's something new when it comes to religious studies.
To sum it up, they do not all agree on what you're saying here but a large portion does tend to use this definition.
Also, really glad that you pointed out the misconceptions around the kinds of people who joins NRMs, a lot of studies have shown that the people who join are educated and often middle to upper class.
@lugiaisthebest142 makes since why middle and upper class people would be more inclined to join a clut.
Lower class people speaking from experience here are used to people trying to sell them magic beans if you know what I mean. Also like op said they don't have as many resources.
I love at 5:30 Wendo trying his hardest to not say "There is no difference"

As a Catholic, I'm so happy to hear Isiah explain how we view the saints correctly. Too often we get accused of "worshipping" them, when really we're asking them to intercede on our behalf to God. It's similar to asking for thoughts and prayers from your family/friends. Thank you Wendigoon 💜
Yeah, but he got the criteria and process for beatification hilariously wrong...
Why does god choose to listen to saints more closely than Catholics with true and honest prayers?
Why do we need saints to intercede when we have The Christ constantly interceding on our behalf? Maybe He gets tired. Or maybe He’s in the bathroom…
Why are you asking normal people, however blessed they are and not... you know.
God Himself?
To all those asking, why do people ask others to pray for them? Why do they ask for thoughts and prayers when experiencing difficulty? Like I said, asking the saints to help us-to pray for us-is the same concept. And if you look at prayers for the saints, you'll find that ultimately, they're asking God for help, as nothing can be done without His will.
Hunter would be laughing hysterically at the 10yr old. You should make him and Kaleb read the most horrific thing you can find and it'll just be a laugh riot.

15:50 as someone who's grandparents were very active church members until they were to sick to attend anymore, the actions of the church trying to guilt them into donating their money to them with the promise of getting into heaven, instead of spending it on their medical expenses played a huge part in my decision to turn my back on the church. to those who are faithful i envy them but i can't see the church the same after that experience.
As someone who does have faith, I can tell you that what this "church" did to your grandparents is definitely not something the Bible teaches. You most definitely can't pay your way into heaven, and the church isn't God.
I'm sorry this happened to your grandparents, and I'm even more sorry that this turned you away from God.
My rule of thumb is this: If it doesn't say so in the Bible, then it isn't something I have to worry about. I pray that God will break through in your life and show you just how amazing His grace and love is, without having to give money to a church.

From a spanish documentary from Mexico on Santa Muerte, "I believe in Her, because I have always seen Death. She's everywhere. But I have never seen God."
Sounds deep until you point out that the “Death” they see is the concept of death itself, essentially to perish unable to come back to, not the “saint” or “deity” they worship. In that regard, it’s an empty statement.

"Did she get the rope" sent me.
When I was in 8th grade Spanish, I had a project with my friend where I had to be a waiter and he was to be waited on, all the dialogue in Spanish. We had done it PERFECTLY- almost. Instead of asking for the check, "poner la cuenta," he said "Yo soy contento, poner la cuerda." : "I am content, please bring me the rope."
I don't personally work with Santa Muerte, but I know some who do, and she's more of a mother figure or a nurturing figure than anything, representing balance with life (as the virgin of Guadalupe represents life, Santa Muerte represents death). It's hard to really describe the cult of Santa Muerte as one recognizable religion, since there is so much overlap with Catholicism (I know devout Catholics who would register as purely Catholic in a census while still incorporating worship of Santa Muerte as well as witchcraft in their practice). Mexican (and a lot of generally non-Western) cultures didn't completely reject indigenous spiritual practices with the arrival of Christianity to these regions, instead Christianity was molded to fit these practices. Take the virgin of Guadalupe--she's a different facet of Mother Mary, but she's innately Mexican with various indigenous roots and symbolism.
And it's also important to note, since I don't think the boys clarified this when talking about the cult of Santa Muerte (but correct me if I missed it!), that the word cult kinda has two meanings when it comes to non-Abrahamic religion. There are cults of various deities in ancient history, but the word "cult" was just another way to say "religion" or "religious group". So the cult of Santa Muerte described in the beginning of this video isn't actually a Heaven's Gate type cult, it's just a religious group with devotees.
All in all, really good video! I really appreciate how the boys (especially Isaiah, a devout Christian), made it clear that the worship of Santa Muerte isn't something to fear or have disdain over. It's so easy to dismiss the worship of figures that aren't necessarily Western or uniquely Christian as inherently dangerous or scary, when in reality these devotees are just regular people with different belief systems. I do hope one day the boys do a little crash course on basic pronunciations before diving into topics with words and names in other languages, but that's a nitpick at this point
At this point Caleb should just be a full fledged Red Thread host since he’s been guest starring for so long

Gentle correction, it is not a requirement for a Saint to have been a religious leader, there are many people among the laity (regular church goers) who have been canonized as Saints following their death.
It is required for someone to have been a faithful Catholic consistently prior to their death then, after their death, if there was evidence of extraordinary faith in their life, it will be investigated by a Catholic tribunal, and then they go through the whole process of canonization.

Historically, there is no separation between cult and "religion" - Religions are merely state-recognized cults; in a vast number of civilization, cults were widely accepted forms of worship for individual deities that a person felt spoke to them the most, so to say. The word "Cult" being derogatory is a modern phenomenon
"Religion" in the way we think of it today is more the homogenization of all socially acceptable cult beliefs from various other older faiths, codified into a functioning framework

Just a little bit of clarification on Santa Muerte, she actually isn't modern! Her worship has been going on for over a century, but her worship was seen as evil or satanic by most of Christian Mexicans so it was kept secret. It's only recently that you've been able to practice with her in a more public way with less discrimination
There's a couple of people in the comment section frustrated by Isiah's argument on cults, and me not being someone who practices any Abrahamic religion at all, still think you'd have to be willfully ignorant to not see the difference between religion and cult.
Just because a belief can be enforced in the same way cults are doesn't mean it as a whole is.
Cults aren't inherently evil to be honest either, just very inhuman (not inhumane) in behavior, that is, not conforming to social norms and how people normally behave. There could be an entirely harmless practice and still be a cult in theory, they're just more prone to devolving into violent behavior.
Religions are also far more complex and are more of a belief system than a general belief.
"Back then it was considered a cult", yeah... it was... then it became full-fledged Religion, just like an actual religion can devolve into a cult. Each can lead to the other, that doesn't mean it's the same thing, otherwise they'd be synonyms, which they aren't. I get the inherent whim to simplify things, but that blending of the concepts only happens if you hold a childish: "Religion good, cult bad" mindset, when frankly, most things tend to be much more nuanced than that.
A much better argument would be that the Church itself is cultlike, due to monopolizing (not necessarily via monetary means) the beliefs and practices to certain communities of people, when realistically, studying holy texts by yourself and dedicating a space in your home to practice should be as valid as going to Church, which again is on the preacher, not the practice by itself.
Cults and Religions are also completely apart inherently by concept, as, at the end of the day, the point of all religions is to enrich, develop and take care of your spirit as you do with your body and mind, it's a way for people to grow in that aspect of their lives. That's not the point of Cults, and if it were, well... you just have a newly born religion, not a cult, and just because people call it a cult, doesn't mean it is, so no, it isn't a popularity contest either.
As a final note, people calling out Wendigoon for hypocrisy are trying to point at the sun when it's nighttime, that would require him making the distinction in order to defend his beliefs, when in fact he stated multiple times that that applied to all religions as a whole, not just his, meaning he was simply stating the differences between both concepts. If anything, I'd criticize him for implying that he might be attacking Christian practices by judging cults negatively (practices that, again, aren't universal in Judeo-Christian systems, so they may vary greatly), but I understand him wanting to respect all other Christian beliefs, which would be unbiased, since he could simply choose to be biased towards his specific Christian beliefs.
To anyone that read this, have a beautiful day ✌
😂 I wish I could think like this. I just get annoyed as fuck like we get it, bro you’re religious you don’t have to defend/ can criticize abbusive cult leaders.

Hey! Catholic here :) Just wanted to add some extra context to the saint discussion - I think the two biggest factors for why some church officials discourage observing Santa Muerte is a) that she was never a _person_ but rather an ideation/personification of death itself, and b) that even with official saints, you are never worshipping *them*, but rather asking them to intercede for you (ie, ask them to pray for you, like asking your grandma to pray for you). While it's true that all official saints went through a long process of approval, at the end of the day, _anybody_ that went to heaven after death is a saint, and the ones officially recognized as such are the ones that the church feels _pretty_ confident saying they likely went to heaven (due to acts they did while alive, miracles associated with them, etc). But every human in heaven is considered a saint. Santa Muerte, however, was never a human being. She was never one of us who ascended to heaven after death, she (as discussed) was an embodiment of death that grew out of indigenous religious traditions. The fun thing about Catholicism is that it has a LOT of local flavors like that - many regions still retain their own cultural traditions even after they've converted (ie, some cultures retained voodoo practices along with Catholicism, Irish Catholics often retain pre-Christian superstitions, etc). However, when it goes from a local tradition/superstition to an active act of worship, that's when church officials get a little leery about it. Not worshipping false idols is already a big thing, so when a priest feels people are worshipping Santa Meurte herself (as her own entity w/ the ability to act on behalf of worshippers), that would be an issue even without the added factor that she wasn't a person in the first place. But it's a topic with a lot of nuance, there are also local priests who don't find it inherently harmful. Really neat subject though, I'm really loving this episode!
(also, side note - it makes sense that many, many religions didn't portray death as evil, since the notion of death as this looming evil spectre to be feared is a pretty doggone recent one. In America at least, pretty bad over the last couple centuries. Death has become extremely sanitized and alienated. We used to have family members sicken and die at home and remain there for days before the funeral - death was familiar, you lived with it, you knew it the same way you know life. With the advent of hospitals and knowledge of germ theory, ill people were increasingly moved into hospitals and out of the home. We stopped having long wakes in households and instead relegated sickness and death to the hospital, where you needn't see it or live with it. As we lost familiarity with death, we grew terrified of it. You can even see it in our cemeteries. Go back a couple centuries and we primarily had garden cemeteries - beautifully landscaped and maintained cemeteries that were used as public spaces (parks and gardens). It was normal to bring families there, relax there. As we removed death from our households, we also started treating cemeteries with the same suspicion, and the preference for easy maintenance outweighed the diminishing desire for garden cemeteries. Now we just get lawn cemeteries- those huge fields with nothing to be seen but tons of tiny stones and the occasional statue. No landscaping, no gardens, no trees, no hills or paths for walking or any sort of comfort. As a result, overwhelmingly, Americans fear death and don't know how to acknowledge it as a simple, natural part of life. The old and ill are relegated out of family homes and into retirement homes and hospitals, to diminish and pass away out of sight and out of mind. Hospitals work with funeral homes and we never even need to see the body before the funeral (or at all, if choosing cremation or closed casket). Cemeteries are only used for funerals before promptly being vacated again, their structure inherently unwelcoming and no longer appreciated. It's honestly tragic, in my opinion. It's not like this everywhere and I think it's massively unhealthy to view death with the fear and revulsion so many people do.
Agreed. While SEEKING death isn’t something we ought to do, the fear of it absolutely shouldn’t keep us from living rich, fulfilling lives surrounded by joy! Literally EVERYTHING can be dangerous, our very exhales can poison the person next to us and make them sick. To live in constant fear of death would be no real life, at all, devoid of any quality.
thank you for the insights especially in regards to cemeteries.i always found it strange how intricately beautiful older cemeteries were yet the current designs feel so utilitarian by contrast. i never really made the connection between developing germ theory and the increase of trying to separate death from us both literally and conceptually

Hey Red Thread, here is a fun tidbit in case you did not know! The average pastor is considered "self employed" by the government. This means they pay a higher tax rate than if they were considered employed even though they are employed by the church body they are a part of. So even if the church doesn't get taxed, the government still gets their cut. (Dad is a LCMS pastor) This might not be true of all pastors or priests, but it is for LCMS pastors anyway.
Oh, that explains a bit! My grandpa was an Assemblies of God reverend, poor as dirt. They usually only had a house because there was one that came with the church he’d be preaching at.
It’s been extremely difficult for me, lately, to come to a decision on the taxation of churches; seeing the SHARP contrast of my mom’s (preacher’s youngest kid with THREE older brothers) near-constant poverty growing up to the abundant wealth of pastors at mega churches, and cults like Scientology… I kinda feel like there could be some middle ground that would work better. Like, if a church brings in a certain amount, THEN they’re taxed, and it depends on what the church does with the tithing/funds.
My church uses a lot of tithe money to help low-income families pay bills, rent, get groceries, etc, so it goes to directly helping the church community with basic needs. That should AT LEAST be a tax deduction, IF churches are going to be taxed.
this is feeling more and more like jackson babysitting the sped kids with every episode

So "cult" is a word that means different things depending on context. In a layman's context, cult can be basically just used to differentiate between safe and dangerous religious ideologies. In psychology and other academic contexts, they have other definitions, and Steven Hassan's B.I.T.E. model is a good litmus test for them

@@nothanks9503You reddit-tier atheists are so funny. It's amazing watching you hate on someone because they believe something different from you. It's like a child throwing a tantrum because he can't control the game 😂
@@nothanks9503I’m an atheist who grew up in a legit (B.I.T.E.-model verifiable) cult. You’re diluting the power of the word by applying it to standard Christianity.

Oh yes, religion is so silly. Unlike our beliefs. That there was absolutely nothing, then suddenly there was everything. For no reason. Out of nowhere. Now that's not silly at all!
Both of my parents worked at Kenneth Copeland Ministries throughout my childhood. After my religious deconstruction, I told my dad how much I disliked Copeland. He had the chance to meet him at least 2 or 3 times (it’s a very, very large plot of land with several buildings). He told me one time, Copeland absolutely berated him for bringing him something late (I don’t remember what it was, but I wanna say my dad was just like dropping off food or something for him) and my dad just took it. But since he had at least one other time he met him that I know of, the dude love-bombed him and was very kind. His one word description for him was “intense”.
It sucks because even though he got laid off from there 13 or 14 years ago, he still sees him in a relatively positive light and thinks he’s at heart a good guy who is just a little misguided
I respect Caleb for knowing his Elder Scrolls lore
Caleb with the elder scrolls lore. He's a keeper.
>Caleb fills in for Charlie and does a popculture gaming reference to Elder Scrolls
>Wendigoon and Jackson just act confused instead of giving him props
Oh, so I guess it counts only if it's the RULE OF TWO, HUH?
It would be cool if they did an episode about The Family, an Australian cult. They had international members and many members were doctors, lawyers, therapists, etc.
I do the same thing as Caleb. At first I thought it was just laughter to cope/mask a traumatic situation, but I've come to understand that its also laughter at the absurdity of the situation a lot of the time.
I lived in Mexico for two years and met a few people who believed in La Santa Muerte and most of them were not friendly. Kind of acted odd and it always felt weird to be around them or in their homes.
Most who worship Santa Muerte aren't
They were probably narcos
Praying to La Muerte is something strictly for the truly struggling from my understanding. You put a lot on the line when you do, so it makes sense for those who regularly pray to her to be…unpleasant.
My exact thoughts they always act suspicious and creepy
Bro I’ve been personally invited to gang members that worship Santa muerta THEYRE ALL EVIL majority of Santa muerta followers are evil who gaf about 0.01% good people dude the guy ik who had a alter was a serial killer
I do the same thing as Caleb. Sometimes, all you can do is laugh because the information going into your brain is too horrific that you don’t know how to process it.
If I’m ever going to be associated with a cult or “cult like behavior” then the Red Thread is my cult of choice! 😂
I love how nobody in the comments is talking about the theme of the episode because I'm 50 minutes in and still have barely heard anything about the sect.
A episode just on the differences between American and Australian lingo would go hard
At this point, this podcast is like morning coffee or like snickers, you are not you without it. 😂
It would be actually hilarious if Charlie returned back, and no one mentioned his absence
Okay unpopular opinion: Caleb is kind of a great guest they should feature him more
Imagine if he was a permanent member, that would be great
@@notmjmjcj6815 Honestly that’s kind of a genius idea but idk if they’d ever do that
Someone needs to show these guys the BITE model
Honestly was hilarious listening to Isaiah try to describe how religions and cults are different lol. Like every time he made a point I'd say to myself "oh like how Jesus told people how to live?" Or "oh, you mean like Christianity" honestly religion in itself is very scary because it requires a delusional mindset.
I think the legal definition of a "cult" is still a small fringe religion, which is why the statistics of cult membership are so high. Every small town where 2 preachers have an argument suddenly gets reported as having 2 cults now.
Currebtly resting bc back to school crud hits teachers hard but the soothing tones of iceberg boy help

Happy to say I’m part of the Red Thread Cult where we worship our immortal god Charles
the Moistener
Still waiting for Charles’s second coming to the podcast
Idk why they are shocked that oompa laughs at tragedy. I do because its surprising and hard to comprehend sometimes
Was really funny watching Isaiah try to explain the difference between a cult and religion.
I met a man that worshiped Odin because he was down on his luck and started praying to different Gods and the day he Prayed to Odin he found $50 on the street.
He's going to worship a puddle next, just wait.
"I thought your name was Charlie, Jackson?!" I've liked him up until now but this line really cemented Caleb as the all-time best guest for me
Isaiah drawing the THINNEST line imaginable between religions and cults is so fun to watch!
It's pretty funny. Like dude, just admit that major religions are just state sanctioned cults. They literally tell you how to live your life or threaten that your going to burn in their version of the underworld. Also the amount of people being in said religion is what helps determine if it a cult or religion is kind of a crazy cope.
Laughter is often a psychological relief from horror.
"If I could not laugh, I would cry." Abraham Lincoln
Something I only learned when I was older was that my grandmother REALLY enjoyed watching and donating to those mega church preachers. She was a Christianly woman, she was kind and sweet, and loved everyone and anyone regardless of anything. It's a shame they took her faith and used it to make themselves false prophets.
She was closer to God than any of those "pastors".
ironically, watching red thread was how i realized i was in a cult. took me a few months to leave because i was raised in it, but i did it!
Mormon?
I'm happy for you! I yope you're in a safer place now
@@Someone-sc9ug yup LOL
@@chandlerdoeswhatifs9399 i am! it’s still hard to break through those old mindsets but i’m doing it day by day.
I would've never thought I would ever see a red thread episode about a town in my home state.
1 person = crazy
10 people = cult
1000 people = religion
So thats what those twins from Breaking Bad were into
I can hear their spurs now.
-Santa Muerte is an important figure in Mexican religions, like, you know, day of the death?
-Yeah, Cinco de Mayo
-Yeah,
-Yeah, exactly
JAJAJAJAJA
the three of them misusing slang is the funniest shit i've heard all day
You guys should cover Emily Armstrong taking over lead singer for Linkin Park and the irony of her being a scientologist and defendimg Danny Masterson in his trial.

Lmao saw your comment and that's exactly when the ad read played
Caleb is killing it with injecting Elder Scrolls lore into videos. Keep it up!
Nothing more permanent than a temporary oompaville
Come for the thumbnail, stay for the absolute devastating roast of that charlatan Kenneth Copeland
Can’t wait to see the guest they have this time! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Caleb is a great guest, you guys should make him a permanent member.
More obscure stuff like this please. I need more esoteric things to bring up in conversation unpromted and make my friends feel dumb and unenlightened and also make me look like i have immense forbidden knowledge that theyre just scratching the surface of
