There was some initial success but what it really reinforced is that yep, I'm just not that good at those techniques but also that I'm even worse at recognizing when to do which technique at the right time. I pretty much abandoned the closed guard flower sweep that I've been consistent with for over a year with all kinds of teammates to trying every open guard sweep I've ever seen. I'm a patreon supporter and talked about this in your week 9 or 10 questions. Fist bump, thankyou. I've been a blue belt for 5 months and I generally feel like I know a little bit about a lot of things but there is just so much I don't know. I also find it challenging to retain what I learn and then be able to implement new techniques at the rate that I'm learning them. Just the idea of sitting up, having 4 points of contact fighting grips is very helpful. As well as what do as I'm being passed to mitigate my circumstances or quickly recover guard to start over trying to survive then sweep or submit. My tendencies in guard are to sweep vs. submit. I'm older and inflexible and submissions like arm bars and triangles are difficult for me. Thank you for another great tutorial. I too prefer sweeping over submitting from my back. Less chance of things going wrong and easier on the neck. Although if it's a tournament or hard roll I'll attack submissions off my back. I appreciate the support man! Really means a lot to me. And to hear you find the videos so helpful 🙏
Love this - like a Jiu Jitsu databurst - so much content in under 9 minutes. That’s Thursdays free roll session seeing new drills for this old fossil and his T-Rex arms (I remember rolling with T-Rex back in junior school 🤣🤣)

I love your lists. I'm writing the lists down in my reasoning journal, and the name of the video. I can quickly remind myself of the major points and come back later after going to bjj and rewatch.
Glad to make you happy being brief and straight to it with out the monolog is excellent and a solid niche cause most instructional are smthing else subed
Jordan & Nikki, I've been saving your videos and watching them over and over. Your contents are by far the best and my favourite. Just wanted to say I appreciate what you do so much and my games have been dramatically improved with your concepts. Thank you 🤙
Hi, I’m a three week, 44yr old white belt who recently was looking for tips on fundamentals and concepts for my “survival” guard. I really enjoyed your video and tonight achieved my first scissor sweep. I kept replaying, four points of contact in my head, while rolling. Trying to trex my arms, use a knee shield, shrimp back into guard and control my breath. Can’t tell you enough how this video helped.
Man thanks so much for the insight. As a blue belt im starting to realize my mistakes but theres just so many little questions that at the end of the clases i kinda have them in mind but dont even know how to ask my instructor, this video gave a ton of valuable information so thank you so much i really congratulate you for your amazing work

Hi! I’m a bjj white belt and I’m just starting to get a hold of some of the fundamentals. Really love your videos! You are good at explaining and the videos are very informative.
loved this! Ive been utilizing alot of the turning away to turtle for the past 6 months! Honestly ive gotten too comfortable with it and need to go back to working retention! Thanks for the great content!
Thanks man, I'm new to BJJ but background in wrestling and starting to use the straight arm to escape side control. I'm also working hard on putting myself in uncomfortable situations to see if I can escape now that my cardio has come up to where it needs to be to roll hard.
Definitely helping my journey as a white belt. Escapes are important to learn if ur learning learn to escape first because i/ u am/are new to this. Embrace the suck and love the suck of being a white belt. U will learn the most as a white belt
Very helpful details and concepts! These videos help answer the questions I have that I don't know to ask until its right in front of me. Thanks for the videos!
Ive been watching this video over and over again over the last year or so and I still find new pieces that are useful to me each time I watch it. Great job!
Guard Retention Notes for Self: Open Guard (Early) 1. Maintain 4 points of contact - Start with situp guard to easily take grips - Take dominant grip to better retain guard, and get sweeps - Grip sleeves, collar grips, and get to spider guard, collar-sleeve guard, lasso guard, DLR, or rDLR 2. Tip: Cover pants to make pants grip harder for the opponent Bottom side control/Half-guard (Early) 1. Stay on your side - Stronger frames (Knee shield) 2. prevent the cross-face with T-rex arms 3. Take & prevent UNDERHOOK Open Guard (Late) 1. Stiff arm (Push at the sleeves) - Stiffen arm to make space, and shrimp back to retain guard - Stiff arm hip toss: If the opponent drops their weight on us 2. Heisman (Push at the tricep) - Stiffen arm to make space, and shrimp back to retain guard 3. Leg pummel (to square up your hip to the opponent) 4. Feet hook 5. Mini-inversion (rock back to make space, and turn into the opponent) & Inversion 6. Underhook > getting on the knees 7. Grab leg and wrestle up Turtle (Late) 1. Escape: Sitout (b-boy) 2. Trap the opponent's arm under our armpit, and roll (like stiff arm hip toss) 3. Granby roll: forward roll
1 Always have 4 point contact before going flat on your back 2 Never allow your opponent to control your head 3 If the opponent passes your legs make sure you control the far arm ( stiff arm sweep or kemura trap ) 4 Always think about inverting / mini inverts or go for the under hook 5 From turtle position you can either roll on the shoulder closer to your opponent or the far one if he controls your waist ( remember to trap his arm for the sweep )

I too prefer sweeping over submitting from my back. Less chance of things going wrong and easier on the neck. Although if it's a tournament or hard roll I'll attack submissions off my back. I appreciate the support man! Really means a lot to me. And to hear you find the videos so helpful 🙏
I learned a lot from this video, especially about crossing your legs when they always pass your guard, awesome tips, thanks Jordan!
Thanks for watching 🙏 😊
Love this - like a Jiu Jitsu databurst - so much content in under 9 minutes. That’s Thursdays free roll session seeing new drills for this old fossil and his T-Rex arms (I remember rolling with T-Rex back in junior school 🤣🤣)
I’m new to bjj been training for half a year and I haven’t really learned these lessons we sort of just roll and roll and we get our own style
I’m glad to know I’m on track through trial and error I’ve developed habits like the heisman past few weeks I’ve been using that move to help control my opponents :)
Love love love all these pointers, I call them laws to follow and practice many of them but with bjj and life we all have more to learn
I love your lists. I'm writing the lists down in my reasoning journal, and the name of the video. I can quickly remind myself of the major points and come back later after going to bjj and rewatch.
Wow thanks so much information in 8 min! As a new white bell who is always letting his guard passed I really appreciate it! Time to practice it
~8 years of bjj and i think this is one of the best bjj channel on YT
Glad to make you happy being brief and straight to it with out the monolog is excellent and a solid niche cause most instructional are smthing else subed
Jordan & Nikki, I've been saving your videos and watching them over and over. Your contents are by far the best and my favourite. Just wanted to say I appreciate what you do so much and my games have been dramatically improved with your concepts. Thank you 🤙
I've a white belt that has been to like 3 classes so far , this is such a good breakdown! Subscribed for sure! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it 🙏👊
Hi, I’m a three week, 44yr old white belt who recently was looking for tips on fundamentals and concepts for my “survival” guard.
As a blue belt im starting to realize my mistakes but theres just so many little questions that at the end of the clases i kinda have them in mind but dont even know how to ask my instructor, this video gave a ton of valuable information so thank you so much i really congratulate you for your amazing work
Recently found you but top 3 go to channels for me cuz it’s ez dialing into your delivery thank you!
Your instructional methods, video quality, editing and calm voice are excellent! Subscribed and a fan! Keep up the outstanding work!
I'm a white belt and this is awesome instruction, thank you. I'll work to incorporate these concepts as I train.
Your videos are the absolute best I've ever seen! This is coming from my perspective as a white belt who doesn't know much, but it's a great supplement to being immersed in bjj, for when I'm not learning in class. Thank you!
Thanks man! Glad to help 🙂
Hi! I’m a bjj white belt and I’m just starting to get a hold of some of the fundamentals. Really love your videos! You are good at explaining and the videos are very informative.
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching 🙂
So helpful. Staying on my sides is a big pickup and the 4 points of contact.
Awesome! Happy to help 👊
Definitely helping my journey as a white belt. Escapes are important to learn if ur learning learn to escape first because i/ u am/are new to this. Embrace the suck and love the suck of being a white belt. U will learn the most as a white belt
👊🏼 I’m a 47 year old white belt. There’s a lot to digest here. It’s all great stuff! Thanks!
Very helpful details and concepts! These videos help answer the questions I have that I don't know to ask until its right in front of me. Thanks for the videos!
This vid was so useful 8 months ago as a white belt. Now coming back as a blue belt I see so many more details I didn’t understand before 💪🏼🤙🏼
great breakdown on the details of the moves. Im a subscriber now after the quality of teaching of the subtlety of each move. Thanks
Instructions are conceptual and strategic. Much appreciated.
Thank you 🙏 Glad you enjoy it 🙂
Ive been watching this video over and over again over the last year or so and I still find new pieces that are useful to me each time I watch it. Great job!
Great video thank you so much. Your videos are extremely helpful to me and I really appreciate you making them.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoy them 👊
Very clear instructions, lots of details in a few minutes. Excellent job sir
Thanks! You gave me those extra tips to go to the next level. This video goes in my favorites!
I'm glad you like it!
Jordan, your videos are extremely educational. I learn more from you than from my school, which just show the moves and allow us to roll.
Guard Retention Notes for Self:
Open Guard (Early)
1. Maintain 4 points of contact
- Start with situp guard to easily take grips
- Take dominant grip to better retain guard, and get sweeps
- Grip sleeves, collar grips, and get to spider guard, collar-sleeve guard, lasso guard, DLR, or rDLR
2. Tip: Cover pants to make pants grip harder for the opponent
Bottom side control/Half-guard (Early)
1. Stay on your side
- Stronger frames (Knee shield)
2. prevent the cross-face with T-rex arms
3. Take & prevent UNDERHOOK
Open Guard (Late)
1. Stiff arm (Push at the sleeves)
- Stiffen arm to make space, and shrimp back to retain guard
- Stiff arm hip toss: If the opponent drops their weight on us
2. Heisman (Push at the tricep)
- Stiffen arm to make space, and shrimp back to retain guard
3. Leg pummel (to square up your hip to the opponent)
4. Feet hook
5. Mini-inversion (rock back to make space, and turn into the opponent) & Inversion
6. Underhook > getting on the knees
7. Grab leg and wrestle up
Turtle (Late)
1. Escape: Sitout (b-boy)
2. Trap the opponent's arm under our armpit, and roll (like stiff arm hip toss)
3. Granby roll: forward roll
This is hands down some of the best Jiu Jitsu content on the internet.
1 Always have 4 point contact before going flat on your back
2 Never allow your opponent to control your head
3 If the opponent passes your legs make sure you control the far arm ( stiff arm sweep or kemura trap )
4 Always think about inverting / mini inverts or go for the under hook
5 From turtle position you can either roll on the shoulder closer to your opponent or the far one if he controls your waist ( remember to trap his arm for the sweep )
