This is the problem that I’ve had studying Jiu Jitsu; the lack of clear and pithy principles useful for every belt level. Thank you for bridging that gap.
I totally agree with this comment. Of course there are important details with every technique but understanding the key principles is so important to how well you can pull it off for real.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu concepts like this helps alot more than learning hundreds of different technique. ive always heard get my elbow to my side, but it makes more sense to say prevent underhooks and keep them out your armpits. ive learned alot from the john danaher videos and gordon ryan like onse talking about controling the inside space. placing frames inside their wedges which is apretty much a joint. hips knees elbows etc
@@skmfkr2 That's awesome to hear, James! Yep, principles are super helpful - especially because you can apply them throughout a vast number of different moves. Whereas focusing "just" on techniques will often lead to information overload.
I hit your fake guard pull to ankle pick in a tournament and got gold!!! Thank you for you amazing content. You have helped me improve my game so much. 🥋👊
This video is amazing. You're the first to explain Bjj theory in this format. So many things make sense now! Thanks for your awesome content, I'm from Montreal :)
This is Literally the BEST bjj theory lesson for lower-mid belts that youtube has ever had, imo. I'm really grateful for you sharing your thoughts and experience with us. As you said on IG, this really is one of your best videos yet, - if not the best. Thanks!
Yes, I would ABSOLUTELY pay money for a long form Jiu Jitsu instructional on theory. This is the stuff I come to your channel for. I can find techniques anywhere but concepts and theory are what sets your channel apart. I’m here for it!
As a beginning whitebelt, watching you prevent and fight out of bad positions is super helpful, and this idea of inside position was probably the biggest thing that was missing in my understanding of the game. I've been watching a lot of instructionals on how to escape x position, but understanding the fundamental concepts is much more useful.
I appreciate the way you explain things that I’ve had to learn through mat time and muscle memory over the years but never had words for. The way you explain concepts is so much clearer than the old adage “Position before submission.” Thanks for your hard work on this. You’re contributing meaningfully to the jiu jitsu community!
I agree, this is so much more applicable than showing a technique and saying "try it out guys" , Jordan presents a concept then shows many live examples of said concept! Excellent!
Jordan this is probably the most helpful bjj video I have ever seen. Incredible! In 2-3 years of training, I always perceived my lack of a proper knowledge base/fundamentals, as classes always turned out to be 2-4 techniques from whatever position(s) and then rolling. By asking, I could get to know what to do in particular scenarios (you know, the counter to X is Y) but that is so granular it barely has an impact on developing a proper instinct, and merely contributes to what I would consider a real jiujitsu understanding. Without fundamentals, jiujitsu feels like a puzzle with endless pieces, and you are alone trying to figure out how they fit with each other. With this video, I feel like I have finally seen a big portion of the whole picture. I always struggled to know when to do what, and what the goal of it was, and that causes a lot of frustration and the feeling of being lost, getting always stuck in the same positions, etc. Man, I recall practising X guard and several techniques from there for 2 weeks at the nogi class, super intensive, and after that, rolling with someone and having the X guard passed in like 5 seconds. It was demolishing, and the worst part was not being able to figure out why. Or a new guy that came to the gym and d'arced me like 6 times in 4 minutes from positions I thought I was 100% safe 🤷♀ Thanks a lot for this amazing content and if you make an instructional with similar content that can be applied from minute 0, I will definitely buy it.
Exactly, I too have classes where we see some movements, then roll. So frustrating because I wanted to practice proper positioning and basic techniques with different levels of resistance, but we go into rolling right away and it's really hard to learn something while trying to survive lol
Man, you make the best conceptual content for hobbyists who don’t have the time to study and drill complex systems for many positions. Great quality and presentation too. Appreciate it! Would love to see an “angles beat frames” video in the future.
I'm 51 and regularly roll with guys half my age and 150% my body weight. Using your grips video and techniques presented here the most common comment I get is "holy cow you're strong". Strength helps but they're misdiagnosing their problems while rolling with me; I don't have the energy to be strong, I use angles, leverage, and win grip fights. The stuff you're teaching is applicable at all ages, weights, and belt levels, I LOVE it!
I still believe this is your greatest video. Changed my game as a white belt and reduced how much I was being submitted. Not allowing myself to get submitted allowed me to perceive the positions I was in and how to escape.
Thank you so so much for this! This is exactly what I'm always trying to improve. You are one of the greats sir! You and Brandon Mccaghren are running the game.....
I just started jiu jitsu and I watched a lot of your videos after my second time training. I went in for my third time and I was able to apply a lot of the principles that you taught. Framing, keeping your elbows in, and getting your feet on your opponent were especially helpful. It was the most fun I’ve had so far, and it was the best I’ve done. I left feeling encouraged that I could get pretty good at this. Thank you for all the time and energy you’re putting into these videos. They definitely help. One thing you do very well is explain the little things that a lot of other coaches overlook as common knowledge. You help explain the basics and why you do those things. I’ll continue watching you videos and I look forward to I’ll the things I’ll learn. Thanks again.
Awesome job, Tyler! Well done, man 🙂 I'm happy that my videos have been of help. But never forget that it's YOU who is training, enjoying it, and overcoming obstacles and becoming better. So congratulate yourself even more so 🙂
This actually helps understand something so fundemental but yet it seems that no one explains this at all. Definatly something to take in mind. Great work!
Fantastic video and explanation of inside position. We lost our school during the pandemic, so a few of us (4 white and blue belts) got together and continued to “train” as much as possible with sharing videos and concepts. Your channel is high on the list. And we are so close to you that we are planning to come and see your class :)
I find "Concepts and Principals" based training helps me most. Being an older grappler, I found the "Bottom Half Guard" instructional very helpful. You bet I'd buy your theory video. Thank you.
I'm fairly new to nogi but watched this video before my session today and saw immediate results - much more experienced guys were unable to submit me where I'd been humbled many many times before and instead of scrambling I just fought for the inside lines only which set up a couple of successful submissions on people more experienced than me whilst remaining very defensive. Top instructional video - particularly for those like me new to BJJ who are still trying to grasp a conceptual understanding of the sport. Cheers!
So often in many things when we’re learning, we are told to do things but not told why. This video really explains why particular frames, t-rex arms and grips are important and I feel this will improve my jiu-jitsu so much
Amazing content as always Jordan! I just want to say a big thank you because as a fresh white belt who's only been training a few months, I get very overwhelmed with the amount of BJJ information and techniques there are out there. These types of videos really show me and help me practice fundamentals that will help my BJJ game and show me what kinds of things to focus on as a new player in BJJ for improvement. Thanks so much Jordan, there's a reason why you're definitely one of my favorite BJJ content creators on the platform, and I would definitely look into buying instructionals that you put out. 💯🙏🏼😁
I had to stop the video to watch the Hello Fresh ad again - you guys are an absolutely beautiful family and it just made me smile like an absolute dork. You are truly wonderful people, and this channel is something I've really been missing in my training - the conceptual underpinnings and the WHY of Jiujitsu. The explanations are great, the production value is amazing. Thank you for everything you are doing! When I get destroyed on the mats, I'm quickly making a habit of coming here for some good improvement advice
I LOVE learning theory like this over just straight techniques! It allows us to be more creative when applying the theory and adapting it for our own personal game/style/body type. I think we all somewhat probably understand some of these principles instinctively after rolling, but laying it out in concrete ideas and sections fills so many gaps!
Been LOVING these theory videos - I've been learning for a month and these are so much better for me to understand why something works instead of just trying to memorize a bunch of escapes
This has to be the most helpful video I've seen on the WHY of jiu jitsu technique. I'm only on Week 3 of training but have been overwhelmed with all the techniques Ive been taught. But the way you've explained inside position makes so much sense. I am going to practice these moves all next week. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. And I would absolutely buy a book on jiu jitsu theory.
Jordan is literally producing UA-cam content at its finest. Yes, I would buy! BJJ Theory is basically the reason I tune into this channel. I would love to see more.
Great video! Thanks to you and a few other bjj channels I decided to take the leap and sign up to a gym and I’ve been loving it! Just got my first stripe a few weeks ago! Please don’t ever stop making these amazing videos!
After watching this video, I realized how the lack of solid foundations has impeded my jiu jitsu skills. The classes I’ve taken so far, from several dojos, just focus on teaching techniques without integrating them into broader strategic concepts. As a result, I find myself overwhelmed by options, struggling to master the principles that are crucial for informed decision-making in a fight. Thanks so much for your contents!
I can say this is the best concepts video i have ever seen , not understanding what you show there is actually not understanding how to fight for bjj .keep up the good work!!!
would definitely love to see more content like this, we are all taught the moves but clear breakdown of the principles is game changing. Its the difference between repeating a move and understanding it. Thanks for this!
".. frames beat internal position and angles beat frames.. " Dude that was a serendipity for me, you are excellent in your explanations. for me it's a before and after, mind blowing. Thks
I’ve noticed you’ve said this before in multiple videos and it’s making the biggest difference! Thank you for tips Jordan! Love the podcast and videos! OSS
You are going to be the greatest BJJ teaching source channel in yourtube! I want to see you hit millions of subscribers. You are just an amazing teacher, thanks Jordan for the great content, explanations and awesome editing.
This feels like such an important fundamental that I was not aware of at all. Still wrapping my head around it fully, but this is so valuable, feel like I need a full instructional for it haha. Thank you!
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu Oh perfect, I'll check it out! quick question - in bottom side control do you prioritise someone not getting underhook or not getting head control on you? in some of those videos it looked like the dude was trying to block you controlling the head, but in doing so his arm was up and it allowed you to get an underhook instead. Seems hard to block both at once, but I guess that comes with practice
WOW... This will absolutely allow my brain to stop thinking about what to do next. Berries and concepts of jiu jitsu allows your brain to make shortcuts so once you get into that position you can become more effective faster. I learn by theories, principles and concepts and this one will definitely make my game faster. I'm down for an instructional 👍🏾🥋. Thank you.
I'm only a week into jiu jitsu and the keeping inside position really helped me out. Still getting tapped all the time but not as much as I was. Thanks for posting this!
I love your videos so much, I was inspired to get back into jujitsu and then immediately uninspired by the price that every jujitsu place around me tries to charge for a membership ($200 plus a month) no cheaper option or lower priced options, I don’t need or want access to every single class everyday that are all when I’m working anyways and $200 a month to only go to maybe max of 4-8 classes a month is also a waste and they’ve already told me I can’t get my belt that way, it’s actually kinda sad how many people want to but can’t afford a membership so they don’t bother at all, hoping I can get one next year! Until then keep up the great content! Hands down the best jujitsu UA-camr!
Incredibly useful video for White belts like me. At the beginning, it's so hard to figure out the meaning of many things in the sport, and this helps a lot. Videos like this on general ideas that apply everywhere rather than specific techniques are super useful and rare! Many thanks, man!
Hey man, I appreciate the comment and the insight! Ya I definitely agree, it's so much easier and more worthwhile to learn concepts/ideas as a beginner, in order to figure out how it all works. Then, as you learn more and more techniques, you'll be able to see the connections far better and improve far faster 👊
Officially my favorite channel for jiujitsu. You teach how I want to learn. And yes, I would buy the theory course. I'm the type of person that needs to know why before I do. It helps being able to apply the theory to multiple concepts/situations after you learn it.
This was a very very informative video. I literally was having a conversation about this with one of the black belts in my gym the night before you posted this vid. I hadn’t seen him a month but we rolled and I had brought up the subject of position and control as something I’ve been exploring a lot recently and he literally went into “inside position” but it was mostly about how if you control the opponents head you control their movement. This vid explained in great depth
Hey Jordan, great videos and awesome instructions. A couple of things from your past videos that I would love to bring attention to: 1. The slowmo move replays with explanations are amazing, there's a video you ask if you should maintain that, and I usually rewind a lot of your videos and the slowmo helps a lot. 2. You write a lot of your tips and tactics on the bottom of the video and when we try to pause it to read it they overlap with the scrolling of UA-cam making it hard to read. Maybe transfer it to the top? Keep it up, learning a lot from you! thanks!
My early bird class just bought John Danaher’s complete closed guard system for $200. Before that, we were studying another curriculum, and afterwards another. If you want to sell content, you should make long-form instructional series designed to be purchased and used as training guides for bjj classes. I know at least my class would buy it. Thanks for all you do!
Jordan, your channel gave me the motivation to start training, and I joined a local gym. White belt life is crude for sure, but I love going to train because I learn something new every time.
This really helped with my Brazilian jiu jitsu I thought having your limbs on the outside helps you win more in Brazilian jiu jitsu but it's actually having your limbs inside that helps you win more most of these submissions that he hit in Brazilian jiu-jitsu I can literally hit 100 percent no problem as a blue belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu usually when I beat a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu as a blue belt with Autism and ADHD it's because they train to much and they don't let their body have a break from Injuries you should always tapout in Brazilian jiu jitsu even if you know what the move is called that they submitted you with don't worry about Brazilian jiu-jitsu submission names just worry about the technique don't worry about winning and loosing and that will help you improve in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Brother Jordan, THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!!! I am a 53yr old Blue Belt. My dream is to get a BJJ black belt. I used to think it would be impossible due to starting at such a late stage in life. BUT, with “principal based” lessons like this one, feel I can get better faster. Thank you again sir!🥋👴🏾🪖🇧🇷👮🏾♀️
Outstanding work, Jordan! This kind of video raises the bar for available Jiu Jitsu content. My observations: 1. Damn! You just summarized in 11 minutes what many folks never truly figure out until purple belt (or beyond). 2. If you have watched John Danaher’s Guard Retention instructional from BJJ Fanatics, almost everything about inside position is in there, but this video distilled it from 8 hours down to 11 minutes. 3. I want to figure out a way to break this into drills for Anastasia. 4. This could be the catalyst for one hell of a successful seminar tour. To answer your question posed at the end of the video about whether I would buy your instructional on Jiu Jitsu theory… yes, and I think the instructional would add a ton of value to the Jiu Jitsu community. I also think that, if each aspect of the theory was accompanied with drills to help students physically experience and mentally solidify it, it would add much more value.
This immediately improved my defensive results. Added bonus: creates a lot of openings for guard recovery or sweeps as they extend further looking for attacks.
BJJ is in dire need of a universal curriculum. Teaching basics like keeping posture and a strong base. And keeping your elbows tucked in, your legs always up when you’re on your back. Stuff like that isn’t taught, we learn all that the hard way.
Jordan, 1. yes I would buy a theory/concepts instructional from you. 2. Will you please post a video of one of your classes so I can kinda preview what you’re offering through your patreon? Thank you for all the content. I just found your channel recently, and I think the info and the production value are top notch.
This kind of broadly applicable concepts are extremely helpful to develop a good "instinct" while rolling and also to see the similarities between different techniques. Thanks for your content!
Jordan… your channel is awesome and your content/instructional guidance is top shelf. Love the work you put in. Please keep it going. It’s left and indelible mark on my training in bjj. Thank you from a fan from Vancouver 🙂
Love it - I never leave comments, but I can't help myself. Great instructional on Theory. This kind of breakdown gives years of knowledge otherwise only gained through experience. Can't wait to apply this in tonights roll.
Amazing video Jordan. Thank you so much. I'm a white belt with 2 stripes and you make me complement the techniques with theory and tactic, great work. I have a question: How did you learn this concepts ? Do you know from where I can get them besides your channel ? Thank you. *A viewer from Chile !
Question. At 7:27 when you shrimp out and create space, instead of pulling guard, could have you brought your left leg up and around his face for an arm bar attempt?
Jordan, love all your videos man. But god damn, this is such an exceptionally good one. The way you present an overarching theme and just hammer away at examples and applications of it make this feel more like an essay or philosophy than just teaching techniques. Being able to take broad, overarching themes found in a sport that everyone picks up on but cant explain, and put them to words is a really great talent. Good work man
Great video. I'm going to focus on trying to obtain inside control and prevent giving up inside control. As a beginner this video has helped me understand how important inside control is. Thank you Jordan! 👊
That's awesome to hear, Han! Go for it - and if you have time, let me know how it went. Be patient and apply these principles slowly. That way, you'll see them add up in no time. 👊
I agree man, and it's such a valuable thing to learn. I'll have the Theory Course up and running relatively soon. It's gonna be a banger! And thank you for the kind words. Good luck on your BJJ journey 🙏
This is exactly the kind of bjj information i'm looking for!! I'm happy to drill and roll in the gym but when looking for instructions, I really want and need to understand the principles behind techniques. Otherwise my brain won't assimilate correctly :D Thank you so much!
I love that you have a "prevention better than the cure" mentality to bjj as I'm terrible on the bottom. On top I'm fast but panic on the bottom when they run around my guard.
Yup, make sure it's digital (not just a hard copy) and affordable. Like 19.99 It doesn't have to be an encyclopedia. Sometimes short and sweet is more effective. I've been in jujitsu over a year and I still Feel like I don't really remember anything particular.Because I've gotten so much information. My brain goes blank when rolling. I'm always wondering what should I be thinking about what should I be focusing on.... If there was a few awesome principles for each scenario like guard passing, guard retention, t tex arms, how to finish subs....

100%. So many people are still stuck on showing the technique of the day. It's the in-between that is the majority of grappling and taught the least.

would definitely love to see more content like this, we are all taught the moves but clear breakdown of the principles is game changing. Its the difference between repeating a move and understanding it. Thanks for this!
"..
frames beat internal position and angles beat frames..
" Dude that was a serendipity for me, you are excellent in your explanations. for me it's a before and after, mind blowing. Thks
“Frames beat inside position, but angles beat frames.” Great line and content!
Thank you!
Thanks man! I have one 🙂 jiujitsutheorycourse.com
@@Sean-xr1xj avoiding the underhook is most important when in bottom side control. It's really the the grip that makes it most hard to escape.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu Thank you!
That's awesome, Julian! Just keep in mind that patience and consistency will save you a lot of trouble in BJJ. Keep training and good luck 🙏
Jordan, I would ABSOLUTELY buy an instructional made by you on Jiu-jitsu theory. No questions asked!
This is why I’m a Patreon supporter, great content as always
Same
Incredibly useful video for White belts like me.
That was AMAZING Jordan!!🤩🤩 so well put together and put into a very understandable structure!
A couple of things from your past videos that I would love to bring attention to:
Keep it up, learning a lot from you! thanks!
Thank you for the suggestions! I'll keep them in mind. :)
Makes so so happy to hear! The start is rough but just gets better and better. You have the right mentality 💪
I started putting this in practice today and noticed an immediate difference.
Hands down best channel for grappling and jiujitsu
All of this information being compiled in such a digestible fashion and being so readily available on the internet is huge for grappling.
Excellent video. This is exactly what we teach our students - to control the space between their elbow and knee.
Sensei, any videos forthcoming on what you mentioned: “frames beat inside position ; angles beat frames”?
Probably in the future. It'll definitely be a part of my BJJ Theory course too.
I would absolutely buy an instructional from you. You simplify all the theories that make everything easier to learn and apply.
Great video! I love the way you use basic principles that can be applied over multiple situations.
Stay injury free- not impossible 👊🏽
I'm showing my coaches this video tomorrow. It helped me on the mats a lot today.
Outstanding work, Jordan! This kind of video raises the bar for available Jiu Jitsu content.
My observations:
I just started out in jju and already learned so much from this one video. Please more content like this. Subscribed.
Awesome, greatly done Will! Thank you for the kind words.
If there's one thing to take away from this video it's: DO NOT GIVE AWAY UNDERHOOKS. I'll start paying so much more attention to them
Will help big time!
BJJ is in dire need of a universal curriculum. Teaching basics like keeping posture and a strong base. And keeping your elbows tucked in, your legs always up when you’re on your back. Stuff like that isn’t taught, we learn all that the hard way.
Would 10000% purchase a long form theory video.
Thank you Jordan for much crisp and effective instruction once again!
Thank you for the kind words, Ken! Happy to hear that you enjoy the content. 🙏
Amazing content! Been following you for awhile and you’re in depth detail is top notch!
Jordan, 1. yes I would buy a theory/concepts instructional from you. 2. Will you please post a video of one of your classes so I can kinda preview what you’re offering through your patreon? Thank you for all the content. I just found your channel recently, and I think the info and the production value are top notch.
Hey thanks man I appreciate it! Here's a sample of a class :) ua-cam.com/video/7vxN4zHUoAk/v-deo.html
I would for sure pay for an instructional from you. We all know it would be top tier quality and easy to consume information.
I would 100% buy an instructional on jiujitsu theory. Looking forward to seeing it!
Perfect timing! Watching this at 7am before Saturday open mat at 8am LFG
Bro it’s Friday evening still
This kind of broadly applicable concepts are extremely helpful to develop a good "instinct" while rolling and also to see the similarities between different techniques.
Thanks for your content!
I'm happy you think the same way, Pedro! This stuff helps more across the board than the "specifics" do.
Let me know how it's helped you in training 👊
I hear people talk about inside position all the time and I never really understood it. Thanks Jordan!
Your videos keep getting better and better. Thank you Jordan. 👊
Jordan… your channel is awesome and your content/instructional guidance is top shelf. Love the work you put in. Please keep it going. It’s left and indelible mark on my training in bjj. Thank you from a fan from Vancouver 🙂
Thanks man, I appreciate it! Happy to help :) I wont stop!
Confession: Sometimes I unlike your videos just so I can like them again.
Every video you make gets better and better. I love the references and of course the content.
Good work man
This is one of your best videos yet. I’ve saved it and shared it with my gym. Thank you 🙏
Great video.
I would definitely pay for a Jiujitsu theory instructional made by you. I gain so much knowledge from your free channel.
It’s so hard to find jiu jitsu “theory” online. You’re awesome and a huge help for me as a 30 something year old white belt. Thank you for your videos
Otherwise my brain won't assimilate correctly :D
Thank you so much!
Wow really amazing video! We need more videos with more simple principles like this!
This channel is pure gold.
Thanks for the content Jordan.
Today was Day Five as a white belt. I’m just focusing on survival. Thanks for making these videos.
I love that you have a "prevention better than the cure" mentality to bjj as I'm terrible on the bottom. On top I'm fast but panic on the bottom when they run around my guard.
Great video Jordan! Really informative
Got me with the “Wu-Tang would agree.” Protect ya neck!
Yup, make sure it's digital (not just a hard copy) and affordable. Like 19.99
It doesn't have to be an encyclopedia.
Awesome video Jordan🙌
