How To Drill This
So I've just piled a tonne of information into your head. I even called it simple. Which again, it certainly isn’t. To remember, or pull off when youre first learning it. All that’s simple is the premise. Get the underhook, get to your knees, finish by sweeping or taking the back. So how do we get all these complicated details memorized?
Well, the best way to engrain this into your brain is to find a drilling partner. Practice without resistance the techniques themselves until you’re decently proficient. Now drill with resistance to truly develop the muscle memory.
Do these 3 drills with you starting on the bottom:
1. Start in the dog fight position. Your partner is trying to escape. You’re trying to sweep or take the back. Reset if they escape or you succeed. Repeat.
2. Start on the bottom with you already having the underhook. Have the drill either to be only to get to your knees, or get to your knees and then sweep or take the back. Your partner's goal is to escape or pass. Reset if either succeed.
3. Start without an underhook. You’re fighting to get one. They’re fighting to pass. Either reset if you get an underhook, or keep going the whole way. Either resetting when you get to your knees, or when you sweep or take the back.
Depending on your level of proficiency in jiu jitsu or the dog fight, 100% resistance from the top player may not be the best way to start the drill. Instead it may be best for them to slowly turn up the resistance as you go and become more proficient. You can dictate this by telling them how much resistance you want, or you can just let them gauge it.
If you have no time to drill in class which is often the case, ask a partner to do live drill this with you instead of rolling a round or two. You can live drill this with them too with you on top or ask them if they want to drill something else.
Thanks a lot, Jordan! Your content is sooo valuable!!!!
@@robtangled8816 I appreciate that very much!
This has helped my half guard bottom loads. Cheers Jordan. I'm sometimes getting guillotined when getting the under hook what am I doing wrong.
12:30 another option for the body lock, here you can step out with your far leg and place it where, once it’s planted, you drive them towards the back. driving towards the side is where their base is, but toward the back there is no base. it’s in the details though right, so head positioning, tight body lock, and heavy hip pressure all play a part.
i found sometimes if i drive towards the side, they can sweep me right back. drive toward the back though there is little to no momentum that they can generate to sweep me, and i usually end up in a good passing position.
this vid is great btw. it’s the bread and butter of where i train and i think you really nailed everything u covered. like you said there’s so many other options for this move.
edit: a must for this coyote or “leite guard”, u said it too, is the underhook.
This is so amazing thank you!
+1 For UA-cam paying pennies
Overdue for gym raid i think. Would love to see that!
Gotta go longer format, that is where you get paid most
So fire. I've been working these moves, more individually, this made it very simple for me to understand how to link them more smoothly. 🤜🤛
@@Brad9987 17 minutes is a pretty long utub video already (and its concise). How much longer do you have to get?
Such high quality production and informative content. As soon as a friend tells me they’ve started bjj I tell them to watch you because I feel like the way you cover larger concepts rather than individual techniques is so much more informative for people. I know it’s not much but I feel like you’ve brought me far more value than this.
That's so awesome from you man, thank you a lot! I really appreciate it 👊 And thank you for the kind words as well 🙂
I always recommend Jordan also. I usually send links to his youtube videos to anyone just starting out
@@ac2jonesI was thinking the same but I like to keep Jordan's video as a secret tool in my back pocket.
Maybe coincidence or maybe my instructors saw this video, but we've been learning half guard wrestle ups, duck unders, back takes and whizzer counters this whole week at my gym. As a new white belt it's super awesome to be able to watch a video that reviews everything I just learned! 👊🥋 Thanks for all you do!
Haha that's a good coincidence! I am glad that this video has been of help 🙂
hi jordan, zep from the philippines your videos help me a lot. keep it up
So much detail. The slow motion and multiple clips from different angles and rolls really make this stand out. I wish me instructionals were like this, but I understand how difficult and time consuming this must've been. Not to mention the graphics. Hats off to you, good sir, and thanks for such great content and insight to make us all better.
Thank you! I am happy you found it useful 🙂
Love your videos. Just got my brown belt yesterday and your videos played a part in my progression. Thank you!
Thanks man! Makes me really happy to hear that. Congrats on the brown!
My favorite system to use, my professor showed us the coyote guard about a year ago and I use it all the time it’s become my bread and butter for being a white belt haha
I found with my Wrestling background it really happened naturally being a position I am super comfortable in as a 40 yo white belt!
Great video I often get to this position but then get wrestled back down so very useful! I'd love to see a video on how to get on the offense from defensive turtle. Particularly when they get the front headlock. Keep up the good work, loved seeing the Roger clips 🐐
Thank you a lot for the support, Andy! 🙏 And yepp, that's a great idea, I will make that video in the future for sure. 🙂
I've been focusing on an "all roads lead to the back" mentality, so this should incorporate nicely.
👊
Ah, figured out how to send “thanks”! Keep up the great work!
🙏
Thanks, Jordan! Your content helps my game so much. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos.
Thanks man! I appreciate it 👊
Phenomenal format. Please more instructional videos like this one. Having so many examples of the same position in live rolling with the different reactions and different highlights was immensely helpful.
Appreciate all the hard work you put into these videos Jordan 🙏🏽
My pleasure, David, and thank you for your support! 🙏
Excellent explanation Jordan, I love the way you breakdown and explain concepts and techniques, thank you so much
I appreciate that! Means a lot to me that people enjoy my teaching. Thank you!
Thank you, Jordan, for posting another great video!
Fantastic. Thanks Jordan.
This was sooo organized and educational! Thank you Jordan !!
Thanks! I've been playing around with this in my game lately. This video has given me great pointers for where I can improve.
Glad to help! Thanks for the super thanks!
insanely high quality instruction, Jordan. Thank you.
Thanks Jordan! Awesome video everyone at my gym is a big fan of your content
Another absolutely golden video. Thanks!
Great video. Rich with information, organized well and really high quality production. Thank you for it 💪
Great video as usual, so densely packed and well filmed. Props to the camera angles and the detailed explanations.
This is the best bjj instructional channel on UA-cam. You have great technique. Great useful content. Great camera work that catches the right angles to see what is going on. Last but not least is the voice overs calmly explaining everything I am seeing. Just brilliant! Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial I’ve been using this now for a couple months now and has been helping my game immensely, especially against larger partners and also going into deep half rolling out the back or over them depending on what they give you.
This is awesome. I have been using this system (chained together with deep half guard and Z guard) unknowingly for years 😅 I never studied it as a whole system. My game naturally developed from getting smashed consistently over the years.
This video makes it quite easy to digest. I've picked up a few tips that will help me fine-tune my approach. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, Jordan! You have no idea how much these videos have impacted my game.
Thanks! I love your videos. Please keep them coming.
Thank you! I will 🙂
Great as always
Awesome video. Thank you
Thanks! Videos are extremely helpful for a new white belt
Fantastic as usual. Thank you very much.
Thank you!
Hell yeah, thanks Jordan!
I've been focusing on half guard for a while, watched long hours of Danaher, Schreiner, Lachlan, grapplers guide, etc. Still...some things just weren't clicking in rolls. So decided to grab your BJJ Fanatics half guard instructional and some the practical details you gave just made lightbulbs go off that didn't click from any of the other instructionals. Keep it up man. Appreciate the stuff you put out, and appreciate your low key humility too, refreshing.
I appreciate that a lot man! Always means a lot to me to hear I'm able to communicate jiujitsu effectively. I always try to keep it real too and I appreciate you noticing 🙂
I just rewatched it and I have to say this video is really awesome!
Thanks! I'm happy you've enjoyed it 🙂
Beautifully condensed
Thanks! 👊
Great content - thank you
One of your best videos for sure Jordan! Thank you brother
I appreciate that! I knew it wouldn't do great on views but wanted to make it anyways :)
Thanx, that's my favourite guard and sweeps
Great, man! Hope it will be useful 🙂
Excellent information. I was really looking for this just when you came out with this video.
Glad it was helpful! 👊
Amazing, thank you for this vídeo, keep going jordan
Glad to be a Patreon supporter, this video was so well done, keep it up Jordan!
For those who benefit from it, please keep in mind it takes 40+ hours to make one video like this. Please consider a donation so Jordan can keep giving us quality Jiu-Jitsu videos

Watching this just before a session and our instructor coincidentally started teaching us this but his own version 😂
Same with last week I was watching your video on kimuras just before they were going to teach us
Nice job! And these videos can't be too long so much good and concise stuff! Been studying some half guard for last two months and so much of it is in here!
Thanks, Chris! It's all in the details 🙂

Excellent video Professor Jordan! Happy new year!!
Thanks man! Happy New Year 🙏
So much good stuff. This has been an underdeveloped part of my lockdown game, getting up to dogfight. Looking forward to drilling this and using it live. Thank you.

Thank you so much for doing this. I purchased your BJJ fanatics instructional. I haven't watched it all, but throughly enjoy what I've already seen. Great job.
I appreciate it that so much man thank you!
This is one of the best half guard videos out there, and answered a lot of my questions as I've tried to improve this guard over the last year or so. Thank you very much!
I appreciate it man, thank you!
This video is amazing
I appreciate how you do a quick summary of all the featured techniques at the end. Great stuff.
I appreciate it 🙏Ya it's a good way to make things stick better
Awesome stuff!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Amazingly well done video, it broke down everything you need to know
Thank you! 🙏
Great instructional! Definitely going to be incorporating this into my half guard game. Thanks Jordan!
You're welcome 🙏 Let me know how it goes 🙂
This is such a great video and extremely helpful. I usually don’t like videos over 10 minutes. This is so helpful and informative, I don’t get bored watching. Keep it up! 👊🏻🤙🏻
Thank you for kind words man! I really appreciate them. I'm stoked I was able to hold your attention and hopefully my next videos will be like that too 🙂
Fantastic video. I messed up on dog fight position this morning and this helped me review what I did wrong
Glad to help!
I love the video, from now on I am working on my half guard attacks almost every training. Simple, yet so many details and possibilities. Great work!
Thanks man! Do let me know how it's going and feel free to ask questions 🙂
Gold! Thank you. I'm always reluctant to enter a dogfight, but this gives me some confidence.
Awesome video. Just awesome. Thank you!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for your generosity Jordan. I listened to the podcast and was touched when you mentioned you didn't just want to make videos that you get high view counts but you want to share knowledge that is crucial, exactly what all of us BJJ students need, i wouldn't wanna watch flashy things that wouldn't help me improve my understanding of BJJ, it's connecting the dots that helps me appreciate what I've learnt.
I appreciate it man. Ya, that's what it is all about, providing real value and knowledge 🙂
Thank you for this brother
🙏
Such an amazing content, learning everyday from this channel. Thank you Jordan
My pleasure, thanks 🙂
this is all I do. Love the half guard and the importance of the underhook! amazing video as always. Spectacular breakdown
Thanks! 🙂
Your videos are the best combination of informative/easy to follow/entertaining
That's what I strive for so I really appreciate that!
Great video very informative 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Glad you liked it!
Amazing. Definitely gonna need to watch this many more times. Perfect timing too as we are doing top half guard passing in our gym. You're a life saver 👊
That's great! Let me know how it went with using the stuff from the video in training 🙂
Top quality content. Thanks Jordan.
Thanks for the kind words 🙏
Super appreciative of your videos, I've learned a ton. Your videos are the best I've found, and you are my go to first for learning technique. Your personality and style are terrific.
Thank you so much man!! I really appreciate it and the kind words 🙏👊
I got the bottom half guard vid a little while ago from Fanatics. I totally recommend it. Not too long; not too short. I've watched all three parts multiple times. The kimura sequences are so easy, and no one sees them coming, especially the kimura-to-armbar. I got the vid during a holiday sale, and it's worth every penny.
Thanks man! I am stoked that it's been of help 🙂
Vous faites un travail MAGNIFIQUE maitre Jordan. J'ai utilisé vos trucs et ils ont TOUS marché !!!! HEHEHEHEHE Je vous adore!!!
Merci! 🙂
This was REALLY worth the wait. Thank you! 🙏
Thank you 🙏
so well done, definitely worth the wait.
Thank you, quite a bit of effort has been put into it haha
Man I am gonna be studying this like homework. Half guard was my first love when playing guard and saved me from getting crushed more times than I can count. I strayed away for a bit, but now it's time to get back to basics
Glad ot was useful man and ya, nothing without the basics 🙂
Fantastic content as usual Jordan. I appreciate the tip about pointing your knee at your opponent's feet in dope mount. Keep on it man! 🙏👊🤙
Thanks man!
Amazing brother
This video is amazing helped me so much!!
This is great, thank you
You're very welcome 🙏
Such great content 🤘🏼
Thanks! 🙏
I love your videos, Mr. Jordan
Thank you! 🙏
great content as usual
Thank you! I appreciate it 🙏
