this band is largely unappreciated by the masses, but really deserves to be right up there with dream theater, porcupine tree and other revered proggy rock / metal bands. they create beautiful atmospheres in their music. simply fantastic and beautiful.
I'm excited for Riverside to come to the channel. I'll admit that I'm not as lyrically involved in this one as Crystalised, but still has a very deep meaning and Doug absolutely nailed these lyrics. Pink Floyd vibe. I like to put this song and really all Riverside songs on when I'm in chill mode. R.I.P Piotr Grudziński has some of the tastiest guitar solos there are in modern music. Grab a cocktail and enjoy Y'All!. Cheers everyone.
You should check out Breaking Habits by MELLER GOLYZNIAK DUDA. It’s M.Duda from Riverside just doing a power trio thing in live takes in studio. You can find it on Bandcamp. You’ll recognize the voice and style just in a whole different context.
Yes!!!!! Riverside was a great discovery for me on my channel a couple of years ago, so much so that I've bought everything of theirs and seen them play in Camden in London a couple of years ago. Massive Floyd vibe in the second half of the song - reminds me of Animals era Floyd. Second Life Syndrome - that is all! :)
Back to the River is a song they've performed where they break out into "Shine on you crazy diamond" in the 2nd half of the song. Obviously they have some influences from Pink Floyd.
Riverside!!!! One of the top "ProgMetal" bands making music since 2000. Here are some other song choices: Acid Rain (Harder) The Depth of Self-Delusion, Lost (Why Should I be Afraid of a Hat) We Got Used To Us (***) (Slower and Moodier) Second Life Syndrome Wasteland (Longer proggy song)
'Love, Fear and the Time Machine' has some of Mariusz's most personal lyrics ... stunning (as ever), especially (from 'Lost...'): And I saw a boy Looking up Dreaming of his future From my past The album's content being bracketed by 'Lost (Why Should I Be Frightened By a Hat?)' and 'Found (The Unexpected Flaw of Searching)' ... all of the lyrical and sonic treasures to be found in in between. More people should know about Riverside, but I greedily enjoy still being able to see them in small clubs.
Oh my god THANK YOU for this. For some reason Riverside is being skipped by most reactors on UA-cam. Lets finally make this band recognizable as it very much deserves so! My personal recommendation is Deprived and Left Out. They have tons and tons of great music.
It's because even though they get positive reactions mostly, they don't get many clicks. Still not well known enough. Channels like this can help though. Keep requesting and hitting the like button.....
Delighted to hear Riverside on here. Egoist Hedonist would be a fabulous trip to go on next. I have seen them live on their last 4 tours. They are amazing live. The lead singer also has another project called Lunatic Soul also a treat for the ears! Love the channel! Sending best regards from Scotland!!!
I was listening to "Discard your fear" by Riverside today while riding bike, and I was thinking to myself "I bet Doug would really like Riverside". What a treat!
Doug, as you may have noticed, the acronym for the album's title is S.O.N.G.S. I think the songs on this album are supposed to be easier for the average listener. However you can also hear that this album is strongly inspired by the progressive rock of the '70s. I think Steven Willson had a big influence on that. He has long been positive about Riverside and Lunatic Soul (a solo project by Mariusz Duda, Riverside's vocalist and bassist). They even recorded a song together for their died fan. Overall, Riverside has a wide range of music. Therefore, I also recommend other songs, e.g. (in random order): 1. Hybrid Times 2. Second Life Syndrome 3. Egoist Hedonist 4. Left Out 5. Reality Dream III - instrumental song 6. River Down Below 7. Towards the Blue Horizon 8. Living In the Past e.t.c.
Glad to here the best Polish prog band of newer generation. If you want to here some cool classic I would recommend Memento z banalnym tryptykiem by the band SBB.
Doug, thanks for the review! We told You will like it! Greetings from Poland! If You like this lirycs, try " We got used to us" from the same album. Now I am waiting for " Second Life Syndrom " "Left out" and " River Down Below ", "O2 panic room - acustic version" and more....
They are one of my favorite newish prog bands. Every album is good, even as their sound has evolved. If you ever have the opportunity to see them live...take it!
Doug your comment at the end made be think of the phrases " Be sure that your things are a slave to you and NOT you a slave to your things. As well as "Don't find your value in your things but find your value within yourself"
Another fine band and great to see them on this channel. Their lyrics are even more admirable given that MD is writing in what will be his second language.
If you enjoyed this, then check out Mariusz Duda's side project called Lunatic Soul. I recommend listening to "A Thousand Shards of Heaven" from the album "Fractured". I think you would truly enjoy that one. It is a beautiful song.
I am 70 so I have heard a lot of music in my life and I hear many different bands throughout this piece. I heard a little bit of Jim Morrison in the beginning, a lot of Yes type music, Tubular Bells, and as someone already said... Pink Floyd, I heard a short riff ( if that is the proper term) from Jethro Tull, and other influences as well. I am not criticizing at all, it just shows the many different blends of different styles of bands over the years that Riverside incorporated in this song. Well done..!!
Great introduction to Riverside Doug! This song was the one that got me into them. I would highly recommend Second Life Syndrome and Dance with the Shadow. You should also check out Mariusz Duda (the singer/bassist and main composer of Riverside) solo project Lunatic Soul. More specifically the songs Blood on the Tightrope and Thousand Shards of Heaven. I think you would like it!
Super glad you did these guys, they're one of my all time favorites. They actually played at one of music halls at Rutgers in 2008 ish. Great intimate show that would have been right in your backyard! For future Riverside, I recommend Second Life Syndrome, Left Out, Egoist Hedonist, Living in the Past, or one of the Reality Dream instrumentals
I am so happy you took my suggestion and listened to this song. I knew you would love it! This whole album is great btw. It's the 1st album they toured the U.S. with, doing only 7 cities the first time they came here. I drove from Cleveland to Chicago to see it, and it was amazing! I hope you do Deprived off this album next. Also Discard your Fear off of Love, Fear and the Time machine.
Excellent group to cover. Riverside and in particular Mariusz Duda really try to come up with distinctive musical riffs and arrangements. They do a good job at it! You could also check out the group "Lunatic Soul". Mariusz has also done some interesting solo work.
This 10/8 + 9/8 main theme is one of the grooviest pieces of music i ever heard. I was sitting in the train back from uni and tried to work out the time signature, although i am absolutely abysmal at it, sometimes i get it right. But this, I somehow could not get it right and had to look it up. Amazing Band, amazing Song.
Brilliant to see Riverside on here A great band that deserve more recognition - Would love to see you listen to Gazpacho from Norway - I would suggest Upside Down or Soyuz 1 - You wont be disappointed !!
I know this is an older video, but regarding the tempo: one characteristic used to define progressive rock is odd and uncommon time signatures. (Witness Genesis' "Apocalypse in 9/8', which is a brilliant example of it, as part of their iconic 'Supper's Ready.' I participate in a prog 'jam' event and we invite professionals to join in, typically rehearsing our parts separately, then joining together on stage. One year, the guest musician started off by telling the other well-trained fans, who were a mix of working tribute band musicians or others working in the business, 'Let's start this off in B major, 4/4 time." This STILL brings up hearty laughter many years later. Common meter is rarely found in prog. I signed up to sing this one at one of our upcoming events, and it initially grabbed me with the jazzy feel of the vocals, but those time signatures, chord changes, and switches from gentle and flowing to charging heavy metal/prog are fantastic overall.
So much to explore with Riverside. Duda is very insightful for these modern times. Another song, Addicted from Love, Fear..., also speaks to our obsession with social media, as this one touched on. Another amazement lyrically is that English is not his 1st language.
I discovered Riverside on Cruise To The Edge in 2017, they absolutely blew my mind and now are tied with my favorite band ever Rush. I can not wait to see them again on the cruise in May 2022. Hopefully they will do another USA tour after the cruise so we can see them many more times before they return to Poland. Such an AWESOME band!
As a fan of Riverside since they began I knew Doug's reaction would be great cause they are on top of modern prog scene. Escalator Shrine is a good start to the band and I am not dissapointed, but really surprised of using piano and so much focusing on metrum and lyrics. It's really cool when someone appreciate the lyrics, especially for the author not using english daily. Waiting for more Riverside in nearest future. Thank You!
Very rewarding band, the more you're into their music, the more you discover and the more you like (love) them. I am grateful to have been able see them 2 times in 2019. and 2020. before the world went into lockdown. They're very special band, great atmosphere and chemistry on set. They're preparing new album now, so something to look forward to.
Hey so very pleased to see that Riverside is on your Radar, man. Be great to hear some of their other tunes, for me "Second Life Syndrome" is their masterwork (remember Second Life, in the days before Facebook?!)
Riverside are awesome, thanks for doing this! I am blessed to work in a place that allows me to stream Pandora for my 12 hr shifts, and one of my favorite channels rotates Riverside thru regularly, along with DT, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Blackfield, Airbag, etc. Feel like I'm living large!! Cheers!
Over the last 10+ years these guys have become one of my favorite bands. I was able to see them in a small club in Carboro, NC several years ago. Mariusz Duda's side project, Lunatic Soul, is also incredibly powerful. This is a perfect example, I think, of how powerful and melodic rock music can be. Thanks for featuring this song...there are many more in their portfolio as strong, or stronger, than this!
Finally! I knew you'd love it. Discovered this band around 2005 and every album they've put out is amazing. They were a little more aggressive in their first and second albums. From this album you should listen to "Deprived" or "The depht of self-delusion"
This is good. For those wondering why they get Pink Floyd vibes from it.. the start could be an homage to the start of The Division Bell album, the elongated bass riff over the 10+9 is reminiscent of Money, famed for running over a 7/4, there's some ideas from Sheep in the Rhodes, the I - IV is the essence of DSOTM, the middle riff is part of the end of St. Tropez from Meddle (piano solo). I do not think that detracts in any way from the song presented here, they took those ideas and did something new with them. To take such remarkably well-known phrases and remould them into something new is hard, and this is exemplory.
A less well known prog band which deserves Doug’s attention is Karnivool. Songs ”Deadman” and ”New Day” serve as examples of their proggier style. ”Themata” is a shorter and more straight forward but still an interesting one. I would recommend studio recordings, the sounds just shine there.
I can hear the influence of Keith Emerson and ELP all over this and another band from that era ATOMIC ROOSTER. They have their own developed sound of course but great shoulders to stand on! I love it when I hear a new band to explore. Italian band THE WATCH were an “early Genesis” tribute band and one of the best at that but are evolving in interesting ways. There are thank goodness new directions in prog building on great foundations.
Doug nailed the lyrics. Mental Health and modern problems are always huge themes in Mariusz songs, also in Lunatic Soul. Amazing music on every one of their albums.
Welcome to the universe of the best progressive rock band of the moment and I would also say of the last 20 years. Once I tried to make a playlist with the best Riverside songs. After a while I realized that the best thing was to include his entire discography. They don't have a single bad song.
Riverside are on another planet! The number of chords, ideas and harmonies in this song are what you would found in 3 albums of most of the metal bands
I've been a fan since their first album. I've seen them twice (once before Piotr Grudziński died and once after) and they are a wonderful live experience.
#DougHelvering Mariusz Duda also has a side project called Lunatic Soul. All of those albums are as amazing as the Riverside ones. If you ever react to them, please consider the track 'Cold' .
Love to see Riverside here. They are a great band and as mentioned a few times its great to see bands who are not so well known getting played here. Thks for the in depth review
I wanted something to watch while I ate lunch, and a new Daily Doug was available. Riverside is a band I have enjoyed in the past. Good choice, thanks.
Beyond the Blue Horizon is one of their masterpieces. One of the last songs featuring Piotr Grudzinski at guitar before his sudden death. Marius Duda has a great voice comparable to Greg Lake. Really a great band.
Been following Riverside from their debut album. Amazing band indeed. And still are the best in the prog scene. What a loss the passing of gitarist Piotr grudziński. But what great to see the “new” band is maybe even stronger back on stage. Next time it will be great to take a live video for review. Because the band on stage is awesome
Riverside, such a great band over the last decades. Quite underrated in my opinion. These Polish fellas really know what they're doing. I highly recommend you try "On hold", new material from the Norwegians Leprous. I also wonder if you've done sth from Royal Hunt, 'message to god' would be a good start. Thanks buddy.
this band is largely unappreciated by the masses, but really deserves to be right up there with dream theater, porcupine tree and other revered proggy rock / metal bands. they create beautiful atmospheres in their music. simply fantastic and beautiful.
im a big fan, especially after visiting their concert. they are great live players

Floyd meeting Porcupine Tree - this is the vibe I often get with Riverside. Awesome stuff. A shame I just came across them last year 😭😁
You should check out Breaking Habits by MELLER GOLYZNIAK DUDA. It’s M.Duda from Riverside just doing a power trio thing in live takes in studio. You can find it on Bandcamp. You’ll recognize the voice and style just in a whole different context.

Riverside!!!! One of the top "ProgMetal" bands making music since 2000. Here are some other song choices:
Acid Rain (Harder)
The Depth of Self-Delusion,
Lost (Why Should I be Afraid of a Hat)
We Got Used To Us (***) (Slower and Moodier)
Second Life Syndrome
Wasteland (Longer proggy song)
Us is very underrated... almost the same as Nevermore by Queen :)
@@carnifaxx It is one of Riverside's best melodies. It can get stuck in my head for long periods.
'Love, Fear and the Time Machine' has some of Mariusz's most personal lyrics ... stunning (as ever), especially (from 'Lost...'):
And I saw a boy
Looking up
Dreaming of his future
From my past
The album's content being bracketed by 'Lost (Why Should I Be Frightened By a Hat?)' and 'Found (The Unexpected Flaw of Searching)' ... all of the lyrical and sonic treasures to be found in in between.
More people should know about Riverside, but I greedily enjoy still being able to see them in small clubs.
You have to try "Place where I belong" from their newest album, it is amazing 13minutes mini-suite!
One of my favorite bands
Oh my god THANK YOU for this. For some reason Riverside is being skipped by most reactors on UA-cam.
Lets finally make this band recognizable as it very much deserves so!
My personal recommendation is Deprived and Left Out. They have tons and tons of great music.

Indeed, anything from anno domini high definition would be awesome
Anno Domini is my personal favorite CD by Riverside.
"Egoist Hedonist" is maybe my favorite song. I'm so glad I got to see it live, but "We Got Used to Us" hit really hard during the live show.
Yes! It's rare to see anyone give Riverside the attention they so deserve. More reactions would be greatly appreciated!
Haha...works every time! Welcome to the new world of great rock!
YES Riverside, Porcupine Tree and The Pineapple Thief are my top 3 the last few years.
I absolutely love Riverside, great choice of song 👍🏻
I was listening to "Discard your fear" by Riverside today while riding bike, and I was thinking to myself "I bet Doug would really like Riverside". What a treat!
I would love for him to do Discard Your Fear next!
That is one of the biggest tracks on my playlist. Pure gold.
*bass hits two notes*
Doug: yea they're in d minor.
That was impressive, damn.
Thanks for the great reaction. 👍

Riverside - Same river 🤘💪
commenting for the algorythm. thnkayou so muchfor covering this one, great choice and superb anaylsis, as always.
Btw.: Mariusz and Steven Wilson are buddies for years.
Oh, nice. Discovered Riverside in 2003 and I’ve been following them ever since. Definitely my favorite modern rock band - love these guys!
Discovered this band through comments on your channel, can't stop listening to this album. Just perfect
This is what is great about this channel. Enjoy.
A true modern masterpiece of prog and a wonderful reaction and analysis. Thank you Doug.
I discovered Riverside earlier this year on Spotify and have been addicted since then. Definitely my best discovery there.
Super underrated band. Nothing crazy flashy in their playing, but really solid groovy soulful music. I really enjoy Saturate Me as well
I discovered Riverside at the start of this year at a review channel on UA-cam.
They make such beautiful music. Love them.
Hmmmm, wonder where that was? 😜👋
@@JimNewstead you may guess once 😇

"Left out" for sure - 1st one I've ever heard - my favorite
Riverside are a great band vastly underrated. They remind me of Marillion but are a bit heavier at times. Chilled prog.
They are one of my favorite newish prog bands. Every album is good, even as their sound has evolved. If you ever have the opportunity to see them live...take it!

Thanks for doing Riverside! Not sure which song of theirs I would suggest next. All their albums are really pretty solid beginning to end.
Riverside!
Very nice, musically. Thanks for introducing me to this Doug (and all those requesting it).
Pop over my way, there’s a fair bit on the channel buddy!
@@JimNewstead 😄 still catching up on all your videos. Here's to the weekend!

Thousand Shards of Heaven is a masterpiece!

Riverside are on another planet! The number of chords, ideas and harmonies in this song are what you would found in 3 albums of most of the metal bands
I really appreciate your reactions that adds a lot of value to the listening experience. And Riverside is a great band btw! 👍
Great choice
@@6lillium thanks.
‘The thousand shards of heaven’ is my favorable single
Consistently high standard of modern prog. Riverside brilliant. Not sure if you have ventured into the band's Airbag, Haken, Frost and Amplifier
Love to see Riverside here. They are a great band and as mentioned a few times its great to see bands who are not so well known getting played here. Thks for the in depth review
Absolutely love Riverside. This is one of my favorite songs they have composed. Lovely, simply lovely.
you should definitely listen more riverside.
Riverside "how great is that"!! Must say love the video, Great Band, now Lunatic Soul needs to follow shortly, that is Marius Duda great musician
I wanted something to watch while I ate lunch, and a new Daily Doug was available. Riverside is a band I have enjoyed in the past. Good choice, thanks.
Thanks dude!
Ty for the riverside!
While you're at it, you should also check out "lunatic soul". It's a side project of the vocalist of Riverside.
One of my favorite bands.
Amazing band 🔥🔥
Beyond the Blue Horizon is one of their masterpieces. One of the last songs featuring Piotr Grudzinski at guitar before his sudden death. Marius Duda has a great voice comparable to Greg Lake. Really a great band.
Been following Riverside from their debut album. Amazing band indeed.
And still are the best in the prog scene.
What a loss the passing of gitarist Piotr grudziński. But what great to see the “new” band is maybe even stronger back on stage.
Next time it will be great to take a live video for review. Because the band on stage is awesome
Second Life Syndrom from Reality Dream DVD would be great!
