➡️ Because of YOU fabulous folks, I learned that an “Enhanced Bass” version of “The Call of Ktulu” by @metallica was a thing. What a treat it was to experience all the nuance and dimension the bass parts actually had. I’ve been listening to this instrumental song from "Ride The Lightning" for YEARS without fully knowing what Cliff Burton was playing. In this video, we take a deep dive into the "lead bass" approach Cliff takes during the first half of the song, the variation on the fills, and how it's truly just one massive bass solo (...take one?) atop the brooding chord progressions. I talk about Cliff's usage of effects with his signature "wah" and fuzz combo, the chromatic commonalities in each song section, how Metallica exercise the art of simplicity (and why it's so effective), and how this song perfectly sets the stage for American horror writer H. @@BungSmuggler yes and justice for jason (or any version bass enhance) are rad. The bass part only is impressive too, so tight and good on timing and at this time there was no editing.
Trujillo is on fire on the whole Death Magnetic album, so something from that.
Its crazy to me how after so many years Cliff is still talked about! True legend RIP.
Cliff elevated the play and musicality of Lars, James and Kirk. When you have a player like that in your band it’s impossible to not up your game.
Metallica always seemed like they had a love/hate relationship with the low end. They get incredible bassists and then completely bury them in mixes. I always thought Jason newsted was a red headed stepchild for them, and I listened to a boosted version of IFA and was blown away.
I think it was just the attitude portrayed through the wall-of-sound mixing, and some Lars / James ego back then to be up front and center. The rough-edge, garage type of production was a big part of their branding. Just my take, anyway. I love The Black Album and the Load-era mixes because they went from buried bass to pure sonic art with the low end in the 90's.

Garage Days Re-Revisited" (1987) and his Bass is audible on virtually every track of that EP in a way that it wasn't on "...And Justice For All" a year later (that was until "...And Justice For Jason" surfaced on UA-cam many years after the fact on which the Bass is far more prominent in the mix)✌️❤️🤘🌏
@@LowEndUniversityFortunately they didn't pull the same stunt with Rob once he joined the band as they had previously with Jason with all of that de hazing bullshit that he was subjected to by Lars and James with all of their shenanigans back in the day and which to be fair to Lars and James, they later acknowledged, with the benefit of hindsight, that was among the biggest blunders they made throughout Jason's 14 year tenure with the band.✌️❤️🤘
i watched some video of them explaining why they mistreated jason like that.
it doesnt justify it, but at least it explains it.
they never dealt with cliff's death properly.....they channeled it through bullying(they called it "hazing" but it was just bullying) jason.
they didnt even let him play the full version of his solo intro in "my friend of misery". what we get is an extremely simplified and shortened version.
Part of it was the era, during this time, rapper dudes were buzzing their minitrucks with obnoxious bass.
Without Cliff, Metallica would have been just another Exodus, Megadeth, Anthrax, or Testament. These are all great bands, but what really made Metallica stand out was the complexity and depth that Cliff brought to the first three records, and some of the songs he wrote for Justice. His mastery of the bass and knowledge/understanding of music theory is honestly beautiful, even in such a hard rocking medium. Long live the major rager on the 4-string MFer!
Totally agree with this. Like Iron Man said in the avengers, "We have a Hulk", I'd say for Metallica, "We have/had Cliff". He was truly the difference maker and what truly set them apart from other bands like you said.
I don't think it's fair to attribute it to all to Cliff. He was involved in RTL but already on MOP had only 3 writing credits, less than Hammett. He didn't write any music for Justice, he's credited for TLITD lyrics only.
@@DM-rc4yu Obviously not cause James, Lars and Kirk also had the magic sauce. And we also gotta give small credit to Dave Mustaine cause his contribution in Metallica though minor, sort of gave a certain edge to Metallica. But back to Cliff, I don't think Metallica would've been as amazing if they hadn't met Cliff. He's the one who thought them about theory and stuff like harmonies I believe. He's knowledge in classical music was essential to make Metallica the transcendent band they ended up being and what set them apart. Even when he didn't have writing credit, I believe he was still essential to the whole thing and we gotta remember that Metallica I believe credits based on riff contributions if I'm not mistaking.
Lars by his education from europe, Deep Purple and stuff, even in 80's he never liked beign catalogued as thrash band.
I mean to him it was one side of the band it didn't represented what the registers extended they did since RTL, MOP, then Justice..
Even on KEA, No remorse and stuff, there s some variations to it.

Jason never played it exact, his S&M performance shows that. He didn't use any wah or heavy effects, played it straight toned and his way - ua-cam.com/video/HA_ToEx0iJE/v-deo.html
@@muriloninja he definitely used some effects his were never as drastic as Cliffs. Just look at the seattle 89 and Sam Diego 92 shows with proper “live experience” mixes the effects are where they are supposed to be but different. Notably for whom the bell tolls. The S&M mix is more mixingboard than front of house so you could better hear the whole symphony and Jasons bass was running a two loop setup one clean direct in or definition and one for effects. Pretty common in pro rock bass look at Billy Sheehan if you want to see a really specific version of that. There are still some bootlegs from the show and i think a different mix made by splitting the surround sound from the video version somewhere that have more of what the audience heard in the room and less the engineered raw recordings.
@@muriloninja he did have the wah and fuzz, the isolated track is just his d.i bass, but it’s there in the full mix. You are right that Jason didn’t play it the same as Cliff though
Man I just got this bassline pretty much mastered at 21. To think these guys were 19/20 when they COMPOSED this masterpiece is incredible to me
They were in an incredibly good environment to learn with the music scene in LA at the time
The story told throughout the song is amazing. Cliff absolutely is the waking beast. Kirk's solo and the harmonies near the end i take as Cthulhu's followers/worshippers singing to him. At the end when they come back to the intro with the clean guitar first it's like the calm before the storm, but in the end you're in the eye of the tornado where it's calm for a moment before it all goes to chaos again, that when Cthulhu finally destroys the world.

The strength of the man’s attack cannot be overstated.
Bass players are kind of in the best position to understand just how much strength is required in both hands to physically accomplish exactly what he was doing.
And this is just one tiny aspect of Cliffs talent, innovative approach and creativity!🤘🏻
I highly recommend everyone listen to the isolated bass tracks of Cliff. There’s just so much to eat there that you simply can’t pick up listening to the albums on their own.
Agreed. Even with lighter gauge strings like he used it’s not easy to present such pick-like attacks that consistently over long tracks, not to mention the crazy bend at the start of the Orion solo, which is brutal.

Ktulu live at The Lyceum ‘84 is my favorite version of the song. It’s faster and the bass sounds even better, bitchin song
That last fill right before it kicks back in to the bridge riff is a tapping line, blew me away when I caught that in an isolated track.
As for a Jason track, it's gotta be My Friend of Misery or Dyer's Eve. There's tracks pulled from Guitar Hero or Rock Band of Dyer's Eve that really showcase how crazy Jason's playing was back then and how criminal it is that the bass parts are buried so thoroughly.
I felt the same way - glad the creator of this put this video together. Like I said - I always knew there was some treasure buried in the mix, but this helped just identify how it fit musically. Thanks Kevin! Jason-era video is on my list!

The all band have something special together, each of them add the right amount of skills set , Metallica really creates music that talk to many different types of people, that’s what made them so amazing.
Couldn't agree more. I don't think any of them are the best at what they do in terms of plain technical skill (well, maybe Hetfield, but my point stands), but I think when they come together, they do what NOBODY else can ever do. Much more important for me.
As much as I love Orion, the pure storytelling in this song is just incredible.

I happen to have Ride the Lightning from the release date on LP that I took from my fathers stash when moving out.
The sound on this song is incredible with that old ass LP scratching sound and the Bass is on the best tuning I've ever heard. When I first played it, I heard Cliff doing stuff I hadn't hear him do in over 20 years of listening the song.
I had never heard the enhanced bass version of this song, only second behind Orion for my Metallica instrumental favorites.
As a teenager I had a large skylight on my bedroom on stormy nights I would push my bed directly under the skylight and listen to this track as the storm raged on , it was a mystical and surreal experience. One of my all time favorite songs.

Thank you so much for your continued appreciation for Cliff and Metallica. This is such an amazing song. As you said it's lyrical without any lyrics. You can see it playing out like a movie in your mind, the beast rising from the depths. Those incredible growls and screams Cliff made on the bass don't even sound like an instrument but like an actual monster. The gradual haunting build in the beginning and towards the ending as it fades has always caught my ear. Sounds so beautiful. This whole song is just a showcase of everyone showing off and complimenting one another.

Couldn't agree more about how evocative this song is with the theme of the summoning of Cthulhu.
I always kind of imagine the intro riff with the wind soundscape as an establishing shot of maybe a cliffside bluff overlooking the ocean and the viewer doesn't really know what's going on yet. The next section maybe focuses on a single person in a robe walking slowly somewhere. The next section reveals that they are not alone and a bunch of other robed people are walking to the same place right at the edge of this cliff. You can see the entire ridge is lined with robed cultists. As the song progresses the summoning ritual progresses. An island with tall gothic alien-like towers starts rising out of the ocean. The music fades into the opening riff once more and as it does the island stops. The timpani drums rise up and with the final strokes of the last chords of the song, the great old one rises as well as lightning crashes in the background. The time of man has come to and end.

Thanks for this in depth review! I've always LOVED Cliff's playing (RIP), this this was absolutely revelatory to all the intricacies to his playing!! Why they chose to bury this in the mix is beyond me (and only James, Lars & to some extent Kirk can answer!)
Imagine Metallica, but with the sonic production of Rush, or Tool, where the bass is celebrated as equals to all other instruments! I think they'd be more revered than they already are. Cliff was indeed taken from us WAY too soon - I truly wonder what the musical landscape would've looked like had he lived on - what contributions would he have made?!

to this day my favorite Metallica song. has been ever since i first heard it 25 years ago as a teenager. it also made me discover and fall in love with HPL :)
and since upgrading my whole audio system so i could hear it more clearly even on the regular releases, i'm glad we came to the same "Cliff is Cthulhu" conclusion. made me love the song even more. as far as i'm concerned, one of the greatest metal/rock compositions ever

I have always felt that the guitars are the surface of the stormy sea, and Cliff is the lurking horror beneath, just perceptible and present enough to heighten the dread, surfacing occasionally with a snarl, to be sighted before submerging out of sight.
My favorite album of all time. And one of my favorite songs.
Small thing to add, all of the harmonies were recorded by James. Only on Load, Reload and St. Anger did they record Kirk for other things than just the solos.
Dave actually had more than just a "credit" on this song. Cliff and Dave both co wrote this. And Dave wrote pretty much all the solos

Great insights and comparisons you hit on regarding Cliff here. His recipe for the wonderfully monstrous tone is compressor, Morley Power Wah Boost, and overdrive (an Ibanez TS9, of all things!). I've got the gear, but I don't know that I have enough years of life left to get this one down *LOL* Cliff Burton Forever!
Lovely song. Reminds me a bit of Rush's By-Tor and the Snow Dog, but instead of Geddy and Alex mostly just having fun, Cliff was serious with The Call of Ktulu, making it just as atmospheric and ominous as it deserves.

The fist song I learned when I started playing was For Whom the Bell Tolls, and I eventually knew all the Ride the Lightning album as a teenager. I was curious about how different this song would be from the obscure tab I found on the internet back in the days. It's definitely my favourite song from Metallica.
My first one believe it or not was "Ride the Lightning", I remember the syncopation of some of it being really difficult at the time. But the intro was easy, just hitting the low E on the downbeats. Good times!
1:11 the first 3 or 4 minutes and last few minutes is music dave mustaine wrote called When Hell Freezes Over . metallica added the middle and renamed it. I think it works well either way . Kinda like the four horseman riff can sound like a gallop or a car engine when mustaine brought it to the band as the song Mechanix .
First album was writen but not recorded when cliff came in so the song ride the lightning and this song are the only examples of dave and cliffs ideas together
This is hands down the best song from Metallica.
Just like the story it's based on, the song has a 3 act structure + intro and outro. I recommend anyone unfamiliar with the original story check it out to gain a deeper understanding for this song.

I like instrumentals. This and Orion. By tor and the snow dog by Rush is a favorite. The instruments are fighting each other. It's amazing.
Speaking of "preludio" and classic music, a Savatage track called Prelude to Madness is a mix of a reinterpretation of Mars, Bringer of War , by Holst and Hall of the Mountain King, by Grieg. They played it with a tonality and signature of tempo different by the original. Sorry for my bad english, i'm italian

As some with long thick fingers I’ve had trouble with four fingered chords like 4 fingered G chord on the guitar. Iv been wondering if I’d be better with bass and these videos make me really interested especially Cliff Burton and Tool’s bassist. I was saddened to hear of Cliff’s passing. But I do like Robert Trujillo. I also had no idea you could get 5 stringed basses.
I have always liked how the intense guitar picking completely stops at 5:20;
this gives me the feeling that something has struggled for its life throughout the first part of the solo, and then died.
I like to compare it a bit to the "Danny's not here, mrs. Torrance" scene from the movie The Shining.

There’s a version out there of them playing it live with him and the bass is LOUD! You should check it out sometime man.
I've said many times I think this track is what inspired Agalloch. That cold, desolate terror that they evoke. If you dig this track, check out their discography. Especially the Mantle, and Ashes Against the Grain.
One bassist you should definitely take a look at is Chaoth who used to be in Unexpect. That band is incredibly technical and creative, and pushes boundaries like not many others. Chaoth plays a 9-string bass and while his newer material is not as put there compositionally, it is still incredibly technical. I highly recommend looking at one of his playthroughs of Unexpect songs. He has one of Words on his UA-cam channel. You won't regret it.
Dang, I haven't heard that name in a loooong time. I remember paying attention to them a bit when they toured with Dream Theater back in 2009-2010 - certainly thought they were unique. Are they still active?
@Low End University Sadly, they called it quits in 2015. I saw one of their last performances, at least at a festival (I think in 2013 or 2014), and it was glorious. The members have moved on to other things. For instance, Chaoth has a solo project called Vvon Dogma I which is quite interesting.
Man, imagine S&M if Cliff was still alive. In that live setting, he would've had a freaking blast, coming up with some wild bass lines, with the orchestra backing him. His death was such a loss…

There are not a lot of people out there that can actually point out that this is Theater music. This is like listening to old school classical. Cliff was Cthulhu. In the intro it has that sound of hmm what is that who done it ? sound almost like a mystery music or pink panther, it feels questioning music or investigative. Then it jumps into Cthulhu appearing and calling out to his followers the bridge and kirk's solo is the main antagonist running for help to warn others of Cthulhu, followed by the joint solos and harmonizing is them fighting back and pushing Cthulhu back into the sea around the 11:30 mark as it goes higher. and right at 12:10 you can feel like they pushed Cthulhu to a cliff (no pun intended) and he falls off

Sometimes, well a lot of times some artists don't realize that there are some similarities with other bands. They coincide but not necessarily copy.
This is the second review I’ve seen where the Call of Cthulhu is referred to as a novel. I don’t think either of them have ever read it.

Is just like the tale, a bunch of humans, which is Kirk's solo, screaming and escaping from an inevitable death by Ktulu, portrayed masterfully in Cliff's bassline. No Doubts that Cliff was a big fan of Lovecraft.

Ktulu has Mustaine written all over it for obvious reasons, its mostly his shit...now imagine Cliff playing with Dave in Megadeth knowing what we know now. Wow!
I actually liked the quieter bass on this song because it's less obvious what it is. It's more mysterious and intriguing. When it's enhanced it just sounds like bass guitar and you can obviously tell what pedals he's using. In the normal mix you can blast it and every so often it rears its head and it's like oh shit what is that?

Cliff wrote songs within songs every song. Very sad that a lot of his best bass lines are hidden in the mixes.
I read once that if Orion was a their launch into outer space...Ktulu was what they found...or what found them.
Mustaine ended up using some of his parts from this on the World Needs Hero album. Off hand, i think it was on the "warhorse" song.
He also used them on Hangar 18
Is there a place/person where you can download the entire album with more bass (done well)? I had Ride The Lightning exclusively on my yellow Sony Walkman for 2 years and I want to hear it again for the first time!
