    I ride a motorcycle in Vancouver, and every time I go out riding I have to remind myself to play this game in my head.... Whenever I'm out there I look at every car around me and I think "What is the weirdest thing this person can do to put me at risk?". I then prepare for that. I've seen some crazy shit out there and this mental game has saved my bacon a few times.

      best advice I've ever heard about riding a motorcycle, was just imagine everyone is out to kill you, its not too far from the truth, defensive riding is the only solution, and dress for the slide not the ride... oh and that was when i was riding motorcycles in England.... in Vancouver its not as bad, and hey they say sorry too...

    I'm an n driver and I am trying my best to keep my habits that I've learned (the good ones I mean) and one of the best habits I find besides giving myself extra space in between me and the car in front and shoulder checking, is using my head to literally scan the intersection left to right every time I get to one. It is a great habit it keeps you conscious of what is going on in the intersection and I think it would have helped in both of those cases with the left turns.

    Both of the left turners (4:14 & 4:32) are at fault. Unless you have a green arrow you may not proceed unless the intersection is clear. In fact even queuing up to turn left on the amber light is technically against the rules even though it's common practice. You may not get a ticket for it, but if you do it on your driver's road test, it's an automatic fail.

    • @edwinacaparelli9911
      @edwinacaparelli9911 2 роки тому +1

      I agree because they have to still make sure the intersection is safe before they turn left regardless of whether or not they're in the middle of the intersection and it's turning red and they need to clear they still need to make sure it's safe. And they should have been anticipated that all of the vehicles ahead of them may have not stopped for that red light. When I'm stuck in middle of the intersection, trying to turn left, I still make sure I know that the people ahead of me opposite are going to stop so that it is safe for me to turn left and I still shoulder check for pedestrians also.

    The truck is 100% in the wrong, yes, BUT. Left lane is still supposed to yeild. When the light turns orange, sometimes people treat it like OKAY I HAVE TO GO RIGHT NOW ITS NOW OR NEVER". Which is what leads to problems like this.

    9:41 my driving instructor taught me that if you are making a left turn and were prevented from turning by yellow light runners. Move as forward as possible so the vehicles from the right are blocked BY YOU, you can turn once the coming lane has all stopped.
    A bit different from that silver car as he/she was going straight, but when I had my N years ago, I was trapped in the middle of an intersection like that because I yield to red-light runners but the cars from the right blocked me from turning left.

    I'm from Québec. I don't know about Vancouver, but as far as lines goes in my area, my city did not even bother to paint most of them theses last few years. They only really do the intersections and the crosswalks. Truth be told, it used to take them all summer to paint the lines, and then they would get scraped off the road with the first snow. Somebody at the city figured out that it is one of those line items in the budget that is mostly just wasted money.

      Hmm, it's iffy for me personally but it seems like the semi had enough braking distance to stop, unless it has a really heavy load. I think that car should've been able to see the top of that semi headed towards the intersection with no intention to stop though.

    • @farangatang
      @farangatang 2 роки тому

      It is always the vehicle impeding the straight flow of traffic. Regardless of the debate of the semis stopping distance it was the responsibility of the person turning to ensure the intersection is clear.

      @@farangatang Agree. But the footage shows that the semi driver applied his brakes when the light turned yellow but then proceeded anyway. It took 5 seconds from the time the light turned yellow to the semi hitting the car, that's pretty reasonable for stopping, even for a semi.

    I drove in BC quite a lot, most of its fine, but one commonality seems to be that drivers almost seem to want to get into fender benders, they see someone make an illegal turn in front of them and they apply no brakes nor do they attempt to avoid the accident in any way, its almost an attitude of "I don't care if I get into an accident, as long as I'm not permenantly injured/killed and it isn't my fault"... I'm not sure if this is due to how BC's insurance system works or legal system, or what, but yeah definitely a higher prevailance of drivers in BC actively deciding not to avoid a minor collision when someone else is at fault than any of the other 7 provinces I've driven in.

    4:03 Or course that left turning car should have waited! Why get clobbered by an oncoming truck, that's insane!
    Why on earth do drivers who are already legally in the intersection, waiting to turn, seem to think they're obligated to leave the moment the light goes to red? There is no law that requires that! The time to exit is when you feel confident that the oncoming traffic is slowing or stopped, and there aren't any late pedestrians in your path.
    And by the way, regarding traffic on the cross street who now have a green? There's no law that allows them to hit the gas and T-bone you, and after 50 years behind the wheel I can tell you I've never seen it happen.
    Bad decisions by drivers turning left without a 'protected' phase (ie green arrow) are one of the most serious crash issues in BC.

    7:25 My analysis of this stupid crunch? I would guess that the driver of the white SUV, preparing to reverse into a parking stall, was paying too much attention to his mirrors as he set up for the turn. And meanwhile, that big A-pillar partially blocked his view of the bumper of the car ahead until he bumped into it. This can be a real issue in modern vehicles with a zillion airbags ...

The tractor trailer had no right to run the red light, the white SUV had no right to continue making a left turn in front of oncoming traffic...
    Have to speak on road rage as well, these people get bent out of shape when they are involved in an accident or when other drivers call them on thier mistakes & they start acting like children having a temper tantrum. They need to grow up!
    OK I will get off of my soap box now. 🤣

    ICBC will probably rule that the car is at fault if they dont take into consideration the evidence of running the red. In a lot of cases I hear about they say it is the one changing directions that is usually at fault.

      @@vancouversworstdrivers In many jurisdictions, it is the responsibility of the turning vehicle to ensure that the path is clear before making a movement. As one officer said at my friend's collision, even if the person going straight through is running a red light, the left turner is still at fault.

    9:27 is a tough one. You can see the green truck is stopped and peering into the far lane and the left 2 lanes stop before the intersection to make room for him. Like technically the dash cam driver has the right of way, but that was a tough spot for that pick up. In the clip; you can see that the pick up was stopped before going through the last lane.

I have had instances where I was driving a big-rig you start to break and realize you don't have enough space so you go through the light. But I think the tractor trailer drivers out here in BC are terrible and I often see them going way past the speed limit in the fast lane, while also going down hill. Receipe for diaster!

    All traffic fines should be a percentage of the person's yearly income, running a red light should be 20% driving on the wrong side of the road 50%. People would soon drive safer if they could lose their home, car or not be able to pay their rent and bills. There should not be a single death or injury on the road because there is no such thing as an accident, someone is always at fault.

Changing lanes is not permitted in the intersection... and with the solid white lines, normally, it isn't permitted prior to or immediately after the intersection either. Lane selection should be made well ahead of time.

    I think that if they actually used concrete for road lane controls in BC (instead of merely painting them on) like they do in other parts of the country, then it would make it more difficult for BC drivers to be so shitty. (That is, concrete structures would destroy their axles so, doing the stupid thing might be less enticing!....or maybe not; BC drivers can be quite douchey/stupid).

      Interesting. I keep thinking that British Columbia rules of the road are similar enough to Washington's that it should not be too much of an adjustment. In Washington, a green left turn arrow indicates that the opposite on coming traffic has the red and is not allowed to enter the intersection. Still have to yield to those lawfully within the intersection. Our insurance companies and civil law practice will not allow red light runners to escape liability for crashing into left turners. I am now wondering if BC has the same courtesy for the green left turn arrow?
