To answer you question, Aileen, this "Eruption" solo basically combined bits from the "Eruption" solo from the first VH album; "Spanish Fly" from the second album; the intro to "Mean Street" from the "Fair Warning" (4th) album, and the guitar instrumental "Cathedral" from the 5th VH album "Diver Down." Ed would combine solo pieces the audience recognized with worked out bits he hadn't recorded mixed together with improvisation, all flowing together as one longer solo spot. And changed a bit from show to show. A combination of worked out stuff with in-the-moment inspiration.
@Itelkner It is. I love it though. He wrote it specifically for Wolfie, even played it to him when he was still in the womb. He named it 316 after Wolf was born on March 16th.
@@brettkenschaft4239 Yeah, brilliant tune. A slightly bluesy lullaby. Wonderful example of Ed's compositional abilities. As good as any "mellow rock" that there's been.
@Itelkner Since we're talking about it, it always reminded me of something that I couldn't figure out for the longest time, until recently. It sounds a little bit like parts of the theme song from "The Princess Bride", by Mark Knopfler. I wonder if Eddie took inspiration from that?
I remember hearing the solo in Michael Jackson's "Beat It" when I was a kid, and always wondered why that guitarist never made it big, had no idea it was Eddie Van Halen playing it until I was in my 30's.
The chello effect is called a volume swell. The pick hand controls the volume, turning up the volume after the pick strike so you don't hear the pick strike making the guitar sound orchestral. 🤘🇨🇦🤘

Very few people ever master anything to the degree to which Eddie mastered the guitar. His playing was so innovative, his techniques so advanced that he forever altered how the guitar is played and perceived in public consciousness. A text book Virtuoso. And a Musician (capital M) to his core. His father was a musician. Music was his lifelong love. He had no backup plan, no other ambition, his entire life all he wanted was to play music.... and he did. His only non music related job was a paper route when he was 12... A job he took to pay for a drum kit. Musician. Capital M. Edward Van Halen is the reason I play guitar. He gifted me with a lifelong love of the instrument and an endless wellspring of inspiration as a player. I was lucky enough to meet him once and express what he meant to me. You know that old saying never meet your heroes? Whomever said that needed to choose a better hero.
Guy could shred like no one else. Tom Morello may have said it best: “If aliens came down and challenged us to a battle of the bands to decide the fate of planet earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion.”
It's the gold standard for heavy rock guitar solos. Checks every box. Virtuosity at the highest level, showmanship, while having fun with it. Simply brilliant!
Eddie was the total package. Technical, speed, melodic, unique phrasing, creative, impeccable rhythm playing, the tone. From classical inspired pieces to punch in the gut rock, blues and many points in between, and an energy and incredible stage presence. He changed the game from the way guitar was played, to the way they were built. Total innovator.
It just hit me .. I was 10 when the first VH album came out then to see them in concert in 87 was amazing . I count myself lucky that I can always say I saw him in concert . Great reaction as usual 🤘🤘🤘🤘
At the end it's amazing when his brother Alex comes in on the drums.... It's easy to forget that these brothers have impacted rock in such a profound way
I love that you say "I love his energy more than anything". Because even after everything he does on the guitar he is always the showman just because that was who he was. Eddie Van fuckin Halen
This man was not just an exceptional musician and composer, but also an innovator and creator. He built his own guitars, created things that received patents and basically invented an entire sound (called brown sound) that is definitively VH. When you hear that guitar, you just know who it is. He may have had good and bad times like anyone else, but he was also pretty much known as a nice guy. Almost always with that sweet smile on his face. Legendary in every way and the band are badass in general. You will love Van Halen. Check out the original audio of the actual song Eruption. It's only 2 minutes long and it will melt your face off. Then the official video of Hot For Teacher to appreciate the band as a whole. They had the greatest sense of humor. Goofiness combined with the utmost musicianship.
The greatest Dutchman to ever hold a guitar in is hands and school the world about techniques and incorporating European classical melodies into guitar solos. And this Dutchman became one of the most famous, iconic and influential guitarists ever in the USA. And always with a smile :) RIP Eddie van Halen.
Eddie was born in Europe but grew up in the U.S. from 6 years old, so I'd say he is more influenced by American rock with obvious influence from classical European orchestra (to which he learned in the U.S. - California) nonetheless. He was a heavy mix of both sides. 😁
Quite possibly the best explanation of Eddie I've ever heard. He's shredding, but it feels like I'm being lullabyed to sleep. You hit the proverbial nail of his incredible talent on the head.
The man who introduced the great Eddie Van Halen was front man Sammy Hagar, the "Red Rocker", who replaced David Lee Roth as lead singer. This is one of the most phenomenal pieces of guitar showmanship EVER. Thanks for your reaction.
Eddie was as human as you could get, part of his stage courage was assisted by alcohol, deep down he was scared sh'tless always afraid he would make a mistake, later in life he was able to dry out and come to terms with himself. At 65 seems too young for all of us, but I feel God wanted him back.
When Dimebag Darrell was assassinated Eddie put THAT guitar in the coffin with him. Vinnie Paul, Dime's brother said, "If Dime knew he would've been buried with EVH's Guitar (Frankenstein was the name Eddie gave it) my brother would've said, kill me now!" Now they are both rockin in the heavens! If you listen to Dimebag's guitar solos, or the songs like the end of Cemetery Gates where Dime does those pick squeals that is where he learned it from and made it his own. It's almost poetic how close these 4 people ere. Eddie & Alex were brothers, Eddie played guitar and Alex on drums, and Pantera (Damageplan) was 2 brothers. Dime on guitars and Vinnie on the drums. Now the only one left is Alex Van Halen 😥
Funny part is, Ed's said in interviews he was so drunk playing this he didn't remember doing it. He'd been very nervous as this was filmed at the first show of the first tour with Sammy and didn't know how the show would go. So he drank himself into not being so nervous, but doesn't remember playing this entire thing. lol
@@johnbon6 Total testament to Ed's insane talent and muscle memory that he could get blotto like that and not noticeably have it affect his playing and amazing fluid precision.
Oh my goodness this reaction has been one I’ve been waiting just for the solo alone 😭 I’m looking forward to seeing this one when I get off work!! The fit also hello??? Slay 💅🖤
I love this performance. He's just having so much fun, He kind of reminds me of a giant toddler, lol. The expression on his face just screams "Mommy, look what I can do!", lol. You just don't see many adults who find that much joy in their craft. He was that good because he loves what he did. That makes all the difference in the world.
At 10:54, it's not an effect. He pretty much did that by manually raising and lowering the volume. There are pedals that do that now. It's so impressive to know how many sounds he invented.
I seriously just typed same sentiment & deleted after reading the many others conveying the same thing. EVH fan since 5th grade. Still have 1984 ticket stub….& 86, 90, 91 so on and so forth
I had the pleasure of seeing Van Halen in concert years ago and it was absolutely amazing! These videos can't come close to capturing the vibe that's at the show.
EVH is the GOAT. I always say “if he’s not your favorite, your favorite guitar player’s favorite guitar player is Eddie Van Halen” What you saw was an amalgamation of different mini solos that he had played and put on albums that came out before this was recorded. His brother Alex is the drummer, and is IMO the most underrated drummer ever, only due to being in a band with a legend like his little brother. There is a video of the drum solo that Alex played at this same concert.
I got to see VH in 1980 at the First Ever "Rocklahoma" and was one of the best outdoor concerts I've ever gone to!! When David Lee Roth Picked up one of the Joints thrown up on the stage (there had to be a hundred thrown up there!!) and said "What's This??" and proceeded to Light It UP!! LoL!! This was on VH's "Women and Children First" Tour...."Have you seen Junior's Grades!?!" (If you were there, you know!!) LoL!! And we also got to watch Sammy Hagar, Pat Benatar (and she sang her new hit "Hell is for Children") and the closers, The Doobie Brothers (waited about an hour for them but left after the second song - IT WAS HOT)...But That was a Concert!! Those were the Days!!
RIP to the GOAT Eddie Van Halen. I feel fortunate to have seen him live in concert. No matter how many times I have seen Eruption, it still always blows me away.
I’ve seen reactions and the people are like “it’s going to take a lot of practice if you want to play like that”. I on the other hand feel that people like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, and Jimi Hendrix are far beyond what someone can achieve with lots of practice. These people are born with some special gift that transcends practice. What these men have accomplished is simply magical!
I say that ALL THE TIME! There are certain musicians that are Blessed with such a talent that NO amount of practice can bring someone to their level!!!!!
@@neillenet291 He never seems to get the credit he deserves. Gonna be totally honest here, EVH's part sounds quick and lazy, like he's just kind of screwing around in the studio. Lukather is the one really holding things down in that entire song, start to finish.
WHAT a SUPERB reaction!! The face scrunchies, the stank of it, the finger flickin's--GOOD! (Eddie's solo wasn't so bad, either...) Thanks for sharing your gobsmackery at this legendary talent!
It doesn't matter how long it takes you to find a visionary artist, what matters is that you find them. You found a Picasso, a Monet, a Cezanne, a Jackson Pollock. Your life will not be the same. ;) There's times in your reaction where your face shows 'how do I even process this?'... That's appropriate. :D I'd have given your next assignment: Neal Peart - Rush... but you already did it. ;)
Ok Edward is as creative a human guitarist as you can attain. And no one will ever give u more perfect musical notes per second. If u really want to see a creative sound and use of guitar, u gotta do Poundcake. Live MTV music awards. You will crap when u see how he introduces the song. Plus u will get Sammy Hagars vocals. It's an amazing combination and an eargasm. This solo is actually pieces of 8 different album songs, with some freestyle in it. He performed this nightly
Eddie is simply an icon , that bright star in the sky witch you keep looking for every time you go out at night , that was a fun reaction to watch. have a great day
Watching your heart rate match the rhythm of the grooves, then spike when he hits the crazy parts, then drop again for more grooves, then spike when you pause. It's so cool to see!
That is one moment in my life I will never forget, seeing Van Halen in concert back in the "80's. I idolized EVH!!! The GOAT of the guitar world!! RIP EVH!!!
This was back when artists truly aspired to be total masters of their respective craft. Eddie didn't just play guitar, he spoke with that guitar, painted pictures, he told stories that left you more on the edge of your seat than any composition or modern blockbuster you could think of, and did it all without a single word. Moments like that make you realize that music is the one and only universal language we all understand, some music has an accent we don't understand as well (we call those genres), but all of it one way or another makes us feel.
The way you described his playing as a lullaby that carries you off, is so perfect. Us guitar players focus on that but you really picked up on his wonderful musicality.
When i saw this video for the first time in 1986, i had seen most every video, hendrix, cream, etc......but i was so blown away at 14, that i didnt play drums for a week and just wondered how someone could play so much, so effortlessly, and i didnt hear a bad note, or see any stress in his entire being. Its like a channeling of music. SRV had this power also.
Ok just to start with, thanks for your reaction, i loved your energy and the emotion listening to the GREATEST OF ALL TIME, GUITAR GOD AND ABSOLUTE LEGEND........EVH. that part where he was making the guitar sound like a violin/cello it was a combination of tapping and using the volume knob to cut out the tap sound leaving just the full note, Eddie was a genious and a massive influence in my life, im 53 and grew up with Van Halen and have been blessed with seeing them twice in concert, its been 3 years since Eddie left us and i still get emotional to this very day when i listen to his mastery.......Miss you EVH......5150 FOREVER
7th Time watching you react to Eddie!! If there can be anything more impressive than Eddie’s playing, in “this” episode, it’s your reaction!! Music has always been a huge part of my life. And I’m only a lover of the music. But just watching how you react to music, how gigantic your smile gets, the Italian hand gestures( that’s so kool by the way) to your happy tears. So thank you Aileen. Keep doing what you do, I’m here for it!!!
I was actually at this concert. New Haven Conn. Around 1985. The most memorable thing was Sammy Hagar, nearly falling from the catwalk above the crowd. He went up there to sing, and he grabbed a bar over his head and started swinging on it. But his feet hit the bar below him on the last swing, and he nearly fell off.
OMG! The G.O.A.T!! This is what us people who are in their 60s listened to back in the late 1970s while in high school!! Us 60+ year olds have been jamming to Van Halen for over 50 years!! At and around the the 9:50 mark youre going to be introduced to Eddie Van Halen's CELLO solo!! Wait and see, you're going to be blown away! You're on the right track enjoying music like this! I hope you enjoy it as much as i have over the years.

I used to own that entire concert on VHS. It was called LIVE Without A Net. There is also a drum solo and a bass solo. I wish I could say I was there, but I had many a friend come over to watch, or borrow, that VHS tape. Back in 1987 or so I believe, and I manually transferred the entire audio to a cassette tape too.
It was was great to see your reaction to this extremely talented man. During the “cathedral” tears come to my eyes and I saw it in yours to. You had the same reaction as did most everyone else that heard him for the first time, and the second time, and the…….. every album had something to add to the mystery of his, I can’t ever find the words to describe it. But it’s like he and that hammered up guitar are like one mold. That guitar became a part of not only his body but his soul. Thanks for the video, and btw you are beautiful to look at. And your reaction added to that.

I discovered Eddie Van Halen when I was in high school, around the year 2000. Since day one, he became a huge influence on my playing, especially when I write my own music. When I heard he had passed away a few years ago, it was like hearing Superman had died. Cheers to Eddie and the amazing music he created.
That was filmed in New Haven, Ct for their "LIve without a Net" DVD. You should hear the studio version of Eruption and you'll be able to pick out the parts of it that he infused throughout this...... So cool ......
Like 5 or 6 different parts of songs, Eruption Mean Streets, Cathedral, 316,some of the tapping were parts from When it's love at the end and that song didn't not even come out until the next album. OU812. EDWARD FUCKING VAN HALEN!
The part where it sounds like a cello is produced by rolling off the string attack with the volume pot. (You can see him do it if you know to look for it). He popularised a lot of these techniques largely because he couldn’t afford a lot of effect pedals when he was younger. But for me, what set him apart from other guitar heroes of his generation was his stunning musicality: His pocket was insane, and every phrase, every note had musical intent. It was never about fireworks for the sake of fireworks, like with so many of his peers. (Can’t believe I’m talking about him in the past tense - I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it).
Again the joy you are finding in the Musicianship and the Music is so infectious !!! Love your channel. The effect you were hearing that sounds like a Cello is his use of the volume knob on the guitar while he is basically playing with just "Hammer-On's" . Guitarists will use this to create a SWELL effect.
Although I only met Eddie one time I had the pleasure of watching these amazing guitar solos live as a 12 year old kid in 1978 and many more times throughout the years. RIP my brother 🎸❤️
This was Eddie at his best. With a guitar and a quirky smile and nothing else but his incredible genius with his guitar. He is playing his professional recreated "Frankenstat" that he originally made in the 70's before he became famous with his band with his brother Alex who is playing drums. Eddie is by many people the greatest guitarist that has ever lived. He rewrote how to play the guitar and they had to come up with a completely different way to write music t to describe what and how he was. doing when he was playing his guitar!! The one and only GUITAR GOD!!! KING EDWARD VAN HALEN!!!
I know you may not get to this. I just wanted you to know I am now one of your NEWEST members!! I was able to see this twice. Once where I live, then I’m Denver CO. Eddie was a GUITAR GOD. So far ahead of his time. Yes SRV and so many more. But there will NEVER be another Edward Van Halen. But to hear this live was but to live his guitar genius!! Happy to be a new member 💙🙏❤️💙
I know it's very hard to say since there are so many incredible guitarists. But he is one of few that can be considered the GOAT! It was a sad day when we lost him, of course there are many other's { Jimmy and SRV} A couple other's you must watch are Eric Johnson - Cliffs of dover - {live 6:12}.
Nobody can make an instrument speak the way Eddie did. RIP.
Guy could shred like no one else. Tom Morello may have said it best: “If aliens came down and challenged us to a battle of the bands to decide the fate of planet earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion.”
RIP Eddie! Gone to early, but never to be forgotten! LEGEND!
Quite possibly the most articulate personal description from a first time listener!! Thank you for the post!!!
I count myself lucky that
I can always say I saw him in concert . Great reaction as usual 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Same here. My first VH concert was in 1984 at the Fabulous Forum (Los Angeles). Blew me away. RIP Eddie, you are missed.
'82 in Dallas for me, and was my first concert ever! Still my favorite guitarist. Miss him every day.
Saw them somewhere around 91ish which buts me around 11.
Big Mac Denver 11/84. Right in front of Eddie. GOAT!
@kevinz599 This may sound crazy but I was at that one too! I was living in Cheyenne and went down to Denver for that show! Not as close as you though.
At the end it's amazing when his brother Alex comes in on the drums.... It's easy to forget that these brothers have impacted rock in such a profound way
A cello YES! A few have said violin, but no,,that’s STRAIGHT cello playing!! He can make that guitar do anything!!!🙌🏻
Eddie Van Halen is a legend in his own right and a true guitar god and a pioneer as a musician.
The emotions that this solo conveys are incredible, you couldn't contain yourself and this proves that the music connects with us.
@@AgentBeans RIP St Vin, Dime & EVH
That solo is something... no words!
Funny part is, Ed's said in interviews he was so drunk playing this he didn't remember doing it. He'd been very nervous as this was filmed at the first show of the first tour with Sammy and didn't know how the show would go. So he drank himself into not being so nervous, but doesn't remember playing this entire thing. lol
@@johnbon6😂😂😂
Good comment
R.I. P. The Legend EVH!!! Great Reaction Beautiful Woman!!! 🤘😎
I always say “if he’s not your favorite, your favorite guitar player’s favorite guitar player is Eddie Van Halen”
What you saw was an amalgamation of different mini solos that he had played and put on albums that came out before this was recorded.
Without a doubt, EVH revolutionized rock guitar. You should check out some Van Halen songs too as the whole band are amazing with legendary songs.
RIP to the GOAT Eddie Van Halen. I feel fortunate to have seen him live in concert. No matter how many times I have seen Eruption, it still always blows me away.
Cool! Next try to react for 'Oktaf Kanis - Come On', thanks Aileen :)
Love this rock sound! COME ON! 🔥
Eddie playing Eruption is sublime! Dude gives chills!! RIP to a legend 😢
Absolutely
I say that ALL THE TIME! There are certain musicians that are Blessed with such a talent that NO amount of practice can bring someone to their level!!!!!
the gift is being committed enough to practice enough

Rip EVH. As always love the energy Aileen that you bring, and the happiness and positivity. Also he is the Guitarist for Michael Jackson's "Beat It"
and Steve Lukather.
Guitar Soloist for MJ's "Beat It"
@@neillenet291 He never seems to get the credit he deserves. Gonna be totally honest here, EVH's part sounds quick and lazy, like he's just kind of screwing around in the studio. Lukather is the one really holding things down in that entire song, start to finish.
@@BigMateo24 Most of the guitar we hear on that song is steve lukather.
Been listening to Van Halen since 1978, got to see them in 1981. Great band!! RIP Eddie Van Halen
R.I.P Eddie 🎸🤘🏻
The cello sound you was talking about is volume swells and achieved by fretting with one hand and turning the volume up and down with the other hand.
WHAT a SUPERB reaction!! The face scrunchies, the stank of it, the finger flickin's--GOOD! (Eddie's solo wasn't so bad, either...) Thanks for sharing your gobsmackery at this legendary talent!
I was fortunate enough to have seen him do this live multiple times. Whenever Eddie was doing his guitar solos we all knew we were watching greatness.
Edward Van Halen was the greatest guitarist the world has ever known. He is missed every day.
That isn't correct but yes definitely top 10
try some Joe Satriani....
@@jamesnasium4688you try some Eddie van Halen
Rock probably.
CLOSE! I agree is one of the top greats but the best, for me, is Randy Rhoads.
You can see his love for the play in every second - I love his sexy, mischievous laugh. You will be missed Eddie.
One of the greatest ever. His guitar is a custom built (by himself) Fender Stratocaster, known as the "Frankenstrat".
this is a Kramer 5150 and not the Frankenstrat !!
@@fkops2773You're right, i didn't pay attention, they look very similar...
It doesn't matter how long it takes you to find a visionary artist, what matters is that you find them. You found a Picasso, a Monet, a Cezanne, a Jackson Pollock. Your life will not be the same. ;)
There's times in your reaction where your face shows 'how do I even process this?'...
Love your adorable reactions and facial expressions. Beautiful smile, too. RIP the great Eddie Van Halen!
Please react to 'Come On' by Oktaf Kanis, thanks Aileen ❤

Eddie always has a smile on face and thats infectious dude freaking exudes joy and thats why he is so beloved
Love your reaction! Your smile is infectious :) it's hard not to smile hearing him play! RIP Eddie, one of the greatest to ever do it.

The Cello Effect is badassery.
That deep note at 9:07 always gives me chills!
Watching you smile to Eddie is a joy.

I'm 71 and I grew up with his music ! Fantastic. RIP sir Eddie ❤
This is what complete and utter mastery of one’s craft looks like.
Seeing Van Halen live must’ve been amazing
This was Eddie at his best. With a guitar and a quirky smile and nothing else but his incredible genius with his guitar. He is playing his professional recreated "Frankenstat" that he originally made in the 70's before he became famous with his band with his brother Alex who is playing drums. Eddie is by many people the greatest guitarist that has ever lived. He rewrote how to play the guitar and they had to come up with a completely different way to write music t to describe what and how he was. doing when he was playing his guitar!! The one and only GUITAR GOD!!! KING EDWARD VAN HALEN!!!
Thank you. You are fantastic, love your energy, and musicians the world wide thank you.
Oh yeah, Eddie always had a smile on his face. He loved what he did!
And Rush - La Villa Strangiato - {live 10:12}. They are performances everyone should see before they die. I loved your reaction to this solo!
Watching your smile during this made my day!
