same here..theyre no joke man. I got taken out by one on the Jersey Shore at Barnaget Island. It took me out and I couldn't get back no matter how much I pushed. I ended up about a quarter mile down from where I was. My friends and a couple cops were running along the shore I could see them but couldn't get in. I finally stopped fighting it and just floated because I was so exhausted. Also I ran into a school of Jelly fish that fucked up my back and my legs. Theyre very dangerous. Had a friend who got pulled out and spent the night treading water.
Saw them live at the Fillmore East several times - they opened for Grass Roots and Buddy Rich in January 17 & 18 of 1969, loved them and saw them again on March 21 - 22, 1969, where they were the second act ahead of Ansley Dunbar and opening for Creedence Clearwater, and then again on October 17 & 18, 1969 where they headlined for the Kinks and Bonzo Dog Band. I didn't get to see their 1971 set, I was working that weekend. Looking back on the Fillmore East era, I feel so fortunate to have been able to go to so many shows and be a small part of rock & roll history. I still have the programs from all the shows I went to. Oh, the stories I could tell...................
Saw Spirit at the Santa Monica Civic 1969. I was 10 YEARS OF AGE !!! Backstage after and Cass was wiping the BLOOD OFF HIS HANDS WITH A TOWEL!!! Rock and roll baby!
Spirit's performance in 1978 at the Grugahalle - Gruga Hall - (Rockpalast -Rockpalace- concerts live broadcasted by German television) in Essen/Germany was fantastic
It’s weird…..I’m 69 now as Ed was then. And my dad was a WW2 veteran. Spirit did a show in 84, I think, and it got uploaded of them doing this song. Skunk Baxter was on fire. Check it out…
No doubt, they were one of the best if not the best rock band of the late sixties to early seventies and then they kind of disappeared from the radio and the concert stage. I saw them three or more times at Eagles auditorium in Seattle. They were always a crowd pleaser, didn't matter if they were the openers or the stars of the show they just rocked hard, kicked ass and everyone went home happy. I still listen to their songs often and am saddened by the loss of Randy and Ed.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke if this band is omitted. Mechanical World, Fresh Garbage, I Got a Line on You, Uncle Jack, Dark Eyed Woman, the entire 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus album, just to name a few musical gems, should be more than enough to qualify for entry.
Yes yes yes!!! They didn't get the recognition they deserved and I can't for the life of me understand why? 12 Dreams.... is genius and one of my top ten favourite albums. It got me through a lot in 1970 and 71. Man we grew up in an amazing time didn't we Dave?
@@debbiewagner1996 Totally agree! 12 Dreams is one of the most unjustly overlooked albums of all time. I suspect it was at least partly due to the fact that they broke up while recording it so there was no band to go on the road to promote it, plus there was no obvious commercial single (like "I Got A Line On You") to drive AM radio airplay.
Seeing this in March 2022, Ed Cassidy (d) would have been 99. I saw them around 1970 in Long Beach. The power went out on stage, and Ed did a drum solo in the summer sun for about 10 minutes till the power came back on, to the delight of the audience. Randy California, an exceptional musician, left us suddenly, too soon.
Okay, let me start out by saying I love Spirit! But I gotta say the gal sitting on the stool shaking the tambourine is straight out of Spinal Tap. And now, for all of you that missed my first sentence, I LOVE SPIRIT.
VERY strong arrangement of the song here. Proper background vocals really do justice to the original recording. Ed is on point and Randy's lead tones are as sweet as honey. I love when Dennis said "We listened to nothing but Sardonicus when we were young." Very cool Dennis!
Agreed. I love them too but later lineups seemed to include women singers as mostly eye candy. I’m not good with that. They didn’t have any women playing instruments even though they changed the members frequently. It was Ed and Randy with different bass players over the years. I guess that’s an “entertainment” decision but women do play instruments. Michael Jackson had a really great woman guitarist and Talking Heads have a great woman bass player, as does Lenny.
