There are some musicians who I think of as angels on Earth, for a time, Randy you were and are one. How I thank you, miss you. All the best to your family
I still remember the first time I listened to Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. I was listening to the original KPPC FM late one night and the DJ said his buddy just walked in with the new Spirit album and he was going to play the whole album for us. It was the most amazing music I ever heard in my life, and it is still just as amazing today. I think Spirit was one of the most underrated and underappreciated bands ever.
randy taught me chords to "nature's way" one night where he was playing small place ojai. used to see him around ojai and just talk a little. used to see john locke at a breakfast place and talk about his days playing with randy and spirit. great stories, both of them. never forget those chords and randy, john and spirit. thank you all for priceless music....
Randy was your brother?! I worshiped your brother and his band like gods back when I was in high school 1966 to 1970, and on. He had a profound influence on me culturally, and one of the best live concerts I have ever seen in my life was when he played live at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in the early seventies with Jethro Tull. How much did Randy complain when he wasn't allowed to go to England with Jimi Hendrix in 1966? Not that I blame your parents... he was 15...lol
I mean the concert in the early seventies was both Spirit and Jethro Tull. I have always said that I enjoyed spirit the most in that concert... They did 12 dreams of Dr sardonicus entirely as well as other material... very psychedelic! Which I loved!
My boyfriend in 1969/1970 moved from LA to small town South Carolina and brought a lot of great music with him That we had never heard. I fell in love with Spirit and natures way. Went off to art school in Sarasota and saw them in concert and was able to say a few words to Randy during the drum solo. I was so elated! Natures way still is my heart’s cry.
Thank you for this! One of the most underrated bands of all time! And Dr Sardonicus a top ten all time albums for sure. RIP the great Randy California.
Cass had big guns !! To keep up with randy and his crew Cass was Randy's stepdaddy, and died at 89, Here I go with Led zeppelin- But for me , his band was powerful rock, emotive BUT NEVER DARK , and LZ just never made me snap and sing
I know thT its a sad day with Dickey Betts passing away . I can only imagine Dickey, Randy and Ed Cassidy playing together again. What with Randy California being a big fan of Bob Dylan. Rocking on heavens doors again. What a sad loss to great music 😢
I met him at the Woodstock 17th anniversary concert in Brandywine Maryland in 1986! I saw 'Mr. Skin' his Step Father too! They played many cuts off 'the twelve dreams' album including Mr. Skin! They were awesome and they didn't disappoint one bit!!!
I always wonder how great a guitarist Randy could've been had he been able to go with Hendrix to England when Jimi left with Chas Chandler. The legend is Jimi asked Randy to go with him, but since he was only 15 at the time, his family understandably put the brakes on that idea. But what if....... Randy been the rhythm guitarist in the Experience? Imagine the sounds they could've produced on stage together? Thumbs up if you think Spirit should be in the R&R HOF. [Ok, the HOF is a POS for putting bogus people in, but leaving Spirit out is shameful.]
Randy California,Spirit, one of the greatest to ever write, play and sing his music and others.Kaptain Kopter and the Whirlybirds, and the Night of Guitars is really something.
Agreed. Hard to say underrated when you have Led Zeppelin covering your songs and mentioning you as an influence. Plus composed one of the most covered songs in rock history; I got a line on you!!
What Randy California was your brother? He was dangerously gorgeous. I loved that guy and had the biggest crush on him. Rest and peace Randy. And i'm so sorry you're L o s honey
This is the best I've heard Ed Cassady play...by far. Never was too impressed prior....but he's kicking ass and right on point with this outing. Maybe he was a "gamer" who showed up big for major outputs. ??
I don't want to get into a petty argument , but Ed Cassidy was much awarded Jazz drummer and played with many jazz greats. Just like many famous drummers who started joined the rock and roll ranks from jazz. I think the recordings in the 60's and early 70's covered up alot of brilliance. Besides he kept Randy interested music even more so than the best guitarist I've ever heard Jimi Hendrix.
Fire the sound engineer or producer or whatever you want to call him. I can hear the drums just FINE but I can't hear the singer or his guitar period too bad finally Randy sang up to his potential and his guitar tone was great but you can hardly hear it. I'm only on the second song so maybe it gets better
Randy and Ed were the best . . . I first saw Spirit in 1969 and was an instant fan . . . There first album is one of the best albums of all time 👍

@@duffgordon9005 Love was a great band, belongs in the HOF. As does Spirit, Little Feat, and the Meters.
Thank you for this! One of the most underrated bands of all time! And Dr Sardonicus a top ten all time albums for sure. RIP the great Randy California.
Couldn't agree more!
Cass was so cool and badass on those Drums, and Randy was so Sweet.
Cass had big guns !! To keep up with randy and his crew Cass was Randy's stepdaddy, and died at 89, Here I go with Led zeppelin- But for me , his band was powerful rock, emotive BUT NEVER DARK , and LZ just never made me snap and sing
Probably the best drummer I've ever heard along with Steve Sheham
Absolutely one of the most gifted bands of the 60s- early 70s era. Harmonies, part writing, innovation, Randy and Spirit were ahead of their time 9
I love the LP 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus....one of the greatest albums ever
One of my favorites who I won't get to see live in person.
Randy was always in great control of the effects on guitar.
The bass and drums on this video sound awesome !!!
Glad this finally popped up on my feed. Have been a Spirit fan for life. Thanks for posting!
Sitting on the wall at Ocean Park we would say hi to Ed Cassidy as he was crusin' the boardwalk to Venice. What a cool dude. God bless them all.
I know thT its a sad day with Dickey Betts passing away .
I can only imagine Dickey, Randy and Ed Cassidy playing together again.
What with Randy California being a big fan of Bob Dylan.
Rocking on heavens doors again.
What a sad loss to great music 😢
Ian Paice told how great Randy was. Now I see.
Randy looks a little like John Travolta in this video.
This kind of video is priceless. Very innovative band/music. Thank you so much for posting!
They over-sweetened the audience by a LOT!
R.I.P. Randy California.
Gone but not forgotten.

if randy had been able to go to england with jimi, we wouldn`t have had SPIRIT, so I`m sure glad he stayed.
@@donkeyshot8472 Good point. I'm very happy with what Spirit produced. So except for his unfortunate passing, it worked out.
This concert must be in a foreign country, Usa audience weren't acting This trippy hippie in the 80s
Randy and Cass- Champions and Legends RIP
I first saw Spirit in 1969 at the Anaheim convention center & fell in love with the band, they opened for Led Zeppelin . . . What a concert 🎸👍
Definitely one of my favorite bands. 12 dreams was such an awakening. So beautiful.

@22 mins WTF?😮....nope.....any ideas on the year❤
I love Spirit and they deserve all the accolades but this "crowd roar" appears to be a bit fabricated lol
The fake crowd noise almost ruins this.
This is a great version of spirit...anyone know who the keyboard and bass player were ? They were fantastic too !
Scott Monahan on keyboards and Walter Egan on bass. www.erjobe.info/spirit/Main/ScottMonahan

Scott Nonaham on bass. I don’t know the bass players name. They went through a few bass players over the years.
Sorry, Scott was on keys not bass.
Walter Egan on bass. Yep, that Walter Egan! And on keyboards; Scot Monahan.
