The thing I love about this scene is it is the first time we get an inkling of humanity in Vader. These blowhards are obsessed with giant death rays and political power, but Vader is solely interested in a more divine power... one that trumps laser powered planet destroyers. It shows him as a classier villain than the bureaucratic Tarkin or Motti.
@HelloFade2 Tarkin is the commander of the Death Star. He runs whatever goes on the Death Star. Vader is there as an overseer and representative for Palpatine, but he doesn't really have official authority on the Death Star. They are within the same hierarchy though since they only answer to one person, the emperor. Notice as Vader says "As you wish" instead of "Yes sir" He's basically being respectful to Tarkin's authority since he's a guest on the Death Star.
No thsts not true at all lol vader was tarkins bitch. He fucked up before a new hope so bad the emperor told.vader he had to listen and follow tarkins orders
The first time I saw this is the part that made me look at Vader and think that is an incarnation of evil, not angry not tempered, but calm, powerful and cold.
Just those lines alone kind of feels like Vader, despite his ruthlessness, doesn’t seem to approve of needless killing. He‘s definitely not a fan of blowing up planets.
Admiral Motti may be overconfident, rude and none-too-intelligent, but nobody can sneer like he does. Judging from what we see in the movie, the ability to sneer is one of the qualities the Galactic Empire values most highly in officers.
It always looked like he coughed up an egg yolk to me when I was little when that yellow light is right next to his face when he recoils from the choke
lol! Vader was on his way over to choke him with his hands but dude just kept rambling... Vader saved a few steps and choked him from across the room and gives you this classic: "I find your lack of faith disturbing" ! lol!!! smh.. I really don't understand how anybody could not just love this stuff!
@Curiner Perhaps, but there's the question why brain chemistry as such. Obviously, given that everyone's is different, personality exists, and given that we experience it, thought and reflection exist. So, assuming that every facet of a person's being is nothing but chemistry, and denying the existence of free will, creates a huge series of questions that need to be answered. First off, what's not to say that the chemistry is not the source of personality, but a consequence of the ideas we have?
@Allsoproductions sadly star wars fact changes with the wind these days, and lucas has more whims than concerns for continuity, but the original novelization gave the impression that Vader could not have taken the reigns from Tarken. He was Sidious's apprentice, but that is not a formal rank. He was assigned to Tarkin and given certain powers, but he did not become official head of imperial armed forces and heir to the throne untill later.
The sound design of Star Wars has been brilliant from the start - you may not have noticed that suttle deep bass rumbling during the force choke, but your brain did.
@Catskills88 More precisely, it's more that while you are aware of things you can influence the way your subconscious behaves, as your subconscious is the essence of your consciousness, but that is where most aspects of will are relayed. This, for example, explains why people can learn, and why people can't generally have relationships without getting to know someone first - you have to reflect and think in order for your brain to create the chemicals that REACT to thought, not CREATE it.
Krennic: don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer ways Vader your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped locate the stolen data tapes or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels hidden fort..... Darth Vader: you shouldn't have been talkin' shit
@dragondisaster Probably because of order 66 was so thorough, and showed that even the force can't protect it's wielders from everything, and it was conducted by non-force sensitive army...even though Vader gave them invaluable help, and Palpatine was the mastermind. Weird thing is, that empire's officers have training and access to data restricted from commoners and most of them don't seem to care what impact force sensitives have had in the galaxy.
When i was little i always thought after the guy was being choked he spat out a raw egg, only now when i see it after watching starwars for 18 years i find out its just a yellow button!
@Msnemesis77 I know but since the prequels were made later, Lucas should have made them to fit with the already established trilogy. And I think the Jedi were already a powerful force in the galaxy in the backstory of A New Hope, not "some shady group of backwater mystics" because Obi-Wan mentioned that over a thousand generations the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy
Everyone thinks he did this purely out of a desire to humiliate the officer....but it was also to show him just exactly what the Force could do. And how a person who could use it could kill someone without even touching them.
I love that he sounds a little amused when he talks about the lack of faith. Like it´s an intern joke amongst the empires leaders that the new guy don´t get
@Stellax98 And you do realize that we are talking about the Original Trilogy? Oh which the only English Actor to play a Hero was Alec Guinness. Being Kenobi. We are also talking about stereotypes. Of which English Actors are commonly portray evil characters in american films because of the connotations I addressed in the previous comment.
"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force."
One of my favorite Vader sayings.
Same
And then Vader destroys a planet.
Which is ironic since some force abilities actually do have the power to destroy planets

This is the first time we see someone ever use the force! If we were back when the movie was released, everyone would be jumping out of their chairs

One of the best scenes in the movie!
Makes me remember why Darth Vader is so great a villian
Legend says that guy's never doubted the Force again.
That scene was the most awesome thing ive seen as a child. I remember watching that and felt Darth was the ultimate bad guy.

He doesn't walk it back either, even after being choked he's completely composed as if he'd do it again.
I Find Your Lack Of Faith Disturbing
Everytime I see Darth Vador choke someone, I start to gasp for air.
I find your lack of faith ..... disturbing
See how he only used two fingers to show him how strong the force is 🤣
As many people have noted, it must have been his first day at the job.

Most iconic scene from a space movie.

Anakin ultimately cares about his family, even more than the Sith. That's the reason he was originally seduced to the dark side.

Yup
He got triggered by the disrespect toward the Force.
@leo11lim He Force Choked Poggle the Lesser in Clone Wars too.

The best part is how bored Vader looks when he's walking over to him.
