The segment at the very beginning is a bridging sequence between the Photo Finish episode and A Matter of State. They were supposedly filmed after the series ended for the syndication purposes (when they started airing the two-hour compilations). Chip Fields recently saud in an interview that she was pregnant (with her daughter Alexis) while the extra segments were being filmed. The interview is here on UA-cam.

This was one of my favorite shows as a kid. And I remember back in like 1992-1993 the Sci- fi channel used to run this show interspersed with Stan Lee interview. Taking this trip down memory lane I really get sad there wasn't more episodes, and seasons to this show. I've seen many reviews, rewatches, and retrospectives about this show on UA-cam. By far you are the absolute best. Most reviews are from creators who weren't even alive when this show was aired. They really can't understand the excitement, and wonder of the show. And it might as well been in the middle ages than the late 70s to them. Thank you so very much for your wonderful commentary, and respect for these shows. I'm enjoying all your retrospectives. My two favorites are this show and the 1st season of the Superfriends. I grew up with these shows and they are very dear to me.

Most modern reviewers (ages vary from mid 20s to late 30s maybe early 40s) I think are more respectful of the show than loving it. They respect it for what it was/trying to do and I know ecspecially GodzillaMendondoza gives it high praise compared to the more modern Spidey shows. But I agree, most don't fully get it and actually enjoy every episode like Irv

The "slammer" thing might refer to a later episode, which means this WASN'T the second episode supposed to air. I remember because that episode is one of my favorite scenes from the series. I remember how big this episode was because Spider-Man was actually climbing the Empire State Building. This was an event.

I remember learning in my H.S. Photography class that sometimes you have to take a lot of pictures to get one good one, but I haven't heard the words "contact sheet" in ages!

Oh, this episode and video are so good! This was a fun superhero adventure that I didn't really pay that much attention to at the time! Too bad it couldn't have had a couple more full seasons!

10:05 live action shows do that sorta thing alot, just depended on how heavily the show needed it. Was just simple film animation overlayed on the negative reel. Maybe they just didnt wanna pay for that? But not like they needed CGI to accomplish shot back then (which wasnt even a thing yet really until the mid eighties anyways)
Edit: looking at the spidey sense throughout, they do animate his eyes.. the rest they make the picture negative to achieve the motion effects, but you can tell at first when the sense happens, they freeze the frame and have his eyes glow for just under 30 frames or so before switching. So they did animated somewhat.. not sure now why they didn't go full out with the sense like the comic now😂

Writers don't like pesky items like "Making sense" get in the way of a script. So, these top secret NATO defense plans were sent out with a State Department courier? If I was in charge, it would be a military operation. Or maybe I'd just send it registered mail, like the Hope Diamond.
Was doing actual stunt work at the Empire State Building the best possible use of the show's budget? I mean, it may have come at the expense of additional episodes, but there is something to be said about not relying on recycled stock footage. I do know that you won't catch me walking along the edge of a skyscraper. Back in January 2020 I was in Malaysia and toured the Petronus Towers, which at one point was the tallest building the the world. That included going on the skybridge between the two towers, and the top floor (or maybe the top floor available to the public; it's been some time). You're looking DOWN at other skyscrapers, and they aren't particularly close.
At the time, I had a vision of Spider-Man crawling around the outside of that building. I think that not soiling himself when climbing up sheer buildings that high must be a little-known power of his.
On a different note, I'm putting together my own version of the previous episode. It combines animation, stills, live action footage, and AI generated art. It's not a straight adaptation, but my version tries to shore up some of the plot flaws. I can't get around some of the issues with that, but I think "Spi-Hard" will be ready in a few weeks.

The stuntwork is simultaneously the most impressive part of the show & what ultimately killed it. The cost, risk, extensive use, the time it takes to setup, just wasnt worth for the network to invest in that when the show wasn't even a critical or ratings darling to begin with. A real catch 22 shame

Ugh. I despise nausea. That queasy feeling is the worst. When I'm feeling like that I tend to tell my body "Just get it over with!" because I know I'll feel better after. It was the first sign of my heart attack. I really hope they can get that under control quickly, how awful. And still you do what you need to do. You really are my inspiration. Do whatever it takes to get some real rest. If the bad things are fighting back this hard, they know they're losing!

Zofran is good stuff, I hope it did the trick. I'm glad to hear you'll be getting out of there soon and back to your own home.
Want to hear a good one? Our puppy destroyed my glasses! I've only had them since May 1. When I go in at night I always put my glasses on our dresser. There's a suitcase on it right now because we're packing for Catalina on Saturday. Anyway, I put my glasses there and went to bed. This morning I got up and searched for them. They weren't there. I finally had to turn the light on and disturb Kathy, and I found *parts* of them on the floor. He chewed until one of the lenses came out and then chewed the ends off the ear bows. It's quite a mess. So we went back to Costco and ordered me some more. I can use my old glasses for Catalina, that's not a major problem. But It's strange being able to say "The dog ate my glasses".

Hello from Catalina! Would you believe Seattle is pushing toward 90 degrees and it's cold, misty and overcast here????? It's supposed to be like this all week. Oh well, we can still dive and stuff, but we sure didn't pack for this. We brought lots of warm weather clothes, so it's getting interesting. Still, we love it here. It's so relaxing and beautiful. We don't HAVE to do anything, we can sit around the condo all week if we want. We won't but we could, ha ha.
How are you? It's been a few days. I think about you a lot.
