After 5+ years of cg, I went back to my old shampoo and conditioner and only 2 styling products. Hair looks better than has in yrs. Go figure. I do need lite protein and bc of this video, I now know how to find it. Ty
You said 5 years and I thought back in my mind I've been following your channel for the majority of my wavy hair journey. I remember when I found your channel seeking help and my waves weren't healed. Now My hair is wavy and pretty healthy. I was a wavy that always wanted that 3B hair... you helped me embrace my wavy hair. You have been a wonderful coach, friend through this journey. SO thank you!
We need more chemists and trichologists in the curly haircare space! I'm now interested to know what you now do with your chemistry degree. So helpful!
Thank you Courtney for sharing your knowledge. After 2+ years of trying to Master the perfect combo of products, I'm happy to say that my hair loves JVN Pre-wash Scalp Oil, Undamage Shampoo and Nurture Conditioner, Complete Leave-In, and I use Aussie Mousse + Leave In and Aussie Curl Refresher for stylers. Once a month a use ION Hard Water S&C. I can wash less often and re-fresh quickly. My hair is healthy and that makes me happy.
This is so helpful! I love learning about the science of curly hair care and would love to hear you drop science tidbits in other videos too. I so much appreciate that you're up-front about how you've developed your expertise.
I love reading the ingredients and I studied pharmacology for Pharmacy Technician classes. When I’m shopping it takes me longer because I’m look at the order of the ingredients. Thank you. I get better results with hydrolyzed Wheat protein. Love the T-shirt.
You are my hero Courtney. I had lost all my curl except at bottom back of my hair. Ive slowly been trying products you recommend, as well as proceedures for a few months. Yesterday, i had curly hair!! Only problem was lors of frizz, which i havent worked on yet.
Courtney synthetic polymers like polyquats, copolymers, etc. are basically microplastics right? They act very similar to silicones in coating the hair so that it can block out the humidity from interacting with the hair (hence they are called anti-humidity agents). But isn't putting microplastics stifling and suffocating the hair? Isn't it bad for the environment?
Plus curly hair loves humidity and lives for it! My hair looks the best in humidity and rainy weather, creating ringlets all over. I usually get that normally too but it gets ten times more when in humidity! Ofc some frizz occure too but it only looks cute, and shows that your curls are REAL. People with straight hair that used heat or "overnight" methods to curl their hair won't be able to keep the curls in moist weather and their hair won't frizz in cute little curly hairstrands all over their head like it does on us curly girls. I avoid getting products that push away moisture.
Thank you for your helpful videos and your humble posture of learning! I was wondering if you could help me find products for curly hair that Does Not contain Corn. I have a serious allergy to corn and to my astonishment I also discovered corn is a preserver used in almoat 'everything' we use in our daily life. I was thrilled to find out you have a knowledge of chemistry!! I will be most grateful to you if you could help me find 'corn' free hair products, and if possible also make up and skin care. Many thanks! Parvaneh
I have a challenge for you! There's a product that I've been interested in but it's written in Portuguese! Ita a Brazilian hair product that I've seen ages ago but then became popular on tiktok. It's called skala expert it's a curl cream multitasking product. Co wash, leave in and rinse out. There's so many different ones I'd love some insight on these!
This is a Great video. I'm so glad to know what copolymers are. I live in Texas and need gels and mousses with no humectants but I'm having trouble finding any without some kind of humectant. High humidity weighs my hair down and flattens my it really bad. If you hear of any with no humectants, just mention it in one of your videos. Thanks so much.
Thank you Courtney!!! I was thinking about that this week: I need to understand better stylers ingredients for hold. Because my hair looooves light products, but many of those don't leave hold enough, and some hold ingredients (or combo of those) in some products I've been using leads to build up pretty ease on my fine and not high porosity hair. But I need then, not just because I'm wavy, but I leave in hiiiiigh humidity region. Please talk more about it! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤
Ok so it sounds like you need to look for product that lean on polyquaterniums as the hold ingredient! You might try the Ouidad stronger hold gel. It’s fairly light, has decent hold, and has good amounts of polyquaterniums. There are even travel sizes so you can try the product without committing to the full size. howl.me/clsGd3cGxNb
I'm curious if I need a "clarifying " shampoo if my normal shampoo has sulfates? I really like biolage volume bloom. It has sulfates, but also silicone. Should I also have a shampoo that says "clarifying "?
Thanks so much for the videos and information that you provide. I have allergic contact dermatitis to several things that are in hair care products so my safe list from my doctor is rather short. I didn’t know that you could use straight aloe vera gel until watching your videos about testing it out. Now I use it as one of my stylers. It’s not the best hold like you said, but it helps add a bit of moisture and a little extra hold to my very dry curly wavy hair. I wish that I could find a deep conditioner and curl cream, but no such luck yet. I’m hoping someday someone will make something that I can use. Thanks again for the explanations. Hopefully it will help me find some diy ingredients to compliment the products I can use 😄👍🏻
Ecoslay has really simplified ingredients lists, but I understand the allergy issues! There's also a company called Miracle Creme that can remove ingredients from the list. Their products are also really simplified. I hope you find something that works for you ☺️
My nitpicky brain want clarification about humectants and the ideal 'dryness' of hair. My understanding is that most things contain a percentage of water even when completely dry to the touch. Wood furniture does badly in damp and wet conditions, it gets really soft and rots. It should however contain a decent percentage of moisture as a too low percentage makes the fibers brittle and the wood prone to breaking. I thougth hair worked in a similar way, that we want the hair to have just enough water? That humectants helps us keep that ideal moisture level?
Coconut is one of the hardest things to isolate, because there are so many different forms of coconut in hair care products. Some of the ingredients are derived from the coconut water, some from the coconut oil, and some from the flesh of the coconut. I don’t think that there is really an effective way to isolate and test for coconut.
😂 there goes Courtney, myth busting my hatred of aloe 🤯IDK maybe it was user error but my hair flash dried for Curlsmith’s Styling Soufflé and the In Shower Fixer but it loves their strong 💪 hold fragrance free gel which is aloe free and their Hydro Style Flexi Jelly. Now that I think of it, there is one gel I have with aloe that my hair likes- Kinky Curly Curling Custard (I just recently rebought bc of one of your videos 😂😂) it’s alot like the CS Soufflé but it’s a thinner texture and easier to work with IMO
Flash drying is 100% a real thing! But I think the mistake is thinking it is a single ingredient that is responsible for the problem. Bounce Curl gel totally flash dries on my but I can use product that contain similar ingredients to that product without issue.
Thank you courtney! Do you have a recommendedation for a cleaner shampoo that DOES contain sulfates? None of the sulfate free ones are working for me anymore. I do want something that has better ingredients without artificial fragrance but it can be hard to find. (Our hair stats are very similar so I love hearing your recs!)
Lately I have been reaching for the Pantene volume shampoo or the Bumble N Bumble Sunday shampoo when I need a sulfate. amzn.to/3ucioxW howl.me/clvH26ILfP1
Methosulfate. Not a sulFATE. Oh Courtney, you crack me up. I know what you meant - detergant sulfates and emulsifier sulfates are two different things. I can confirm washing your hair with 100% sodium laurel sulfate results in dry, brittle hair. Just one of the lessons learned at the county fair....

@@tessltaekook8501 Same girl my waves love humidity. It just needs to interact with the environment and nice defined waves. No product needed.
