Bands Who Changed Their Style for the Worse

  • There's always been the discussion around polarizing rock and metal bands who were at the top of their game for some time, only to switch up their genres. Some get praised, some grow larger, some stay somewhere in the middle, and some simply get doggypiled on for going off base.
In this video, I go over some of the bands that--in my personal opinion--changed their style for the worse. At the end of the day, this is all subjective and I'd love to hear your thoughts!!!!!!!

I remember being in a shitty local band and we all went to try to open for suicide silence, however we only wanted to do to fuck with the band since they were still fresh off the Tee Hee album…. We didn’t get to open but we did go there and start a 15 minute tee hee chant

In Flames is the obvious one, started off a melodeath band with some folk and even bits of neoclassical roots; at least enough to give their riffs some whimsy. They sort of traded that away for a much more straight forward sound on Clayman and it's all been downhill since.

Easily Rings of Saturn. I was worried yet hopeful when Lucas kicked (or the singer left) and he said the band was going instrumental. Then I listen to the self-titled and immediately shed a tear of disappointment. What makes it worse is that when some of the fans that prefer the deathcore albums ask him nicely (as well as the ones who mock him but they're the minority), lucas just cant get his head out of his ass and just simply mocks them

Definitely can agree. I remember a time they were one of the dopest projects and forefront frontrunners for tech deathcore and it just turned so meh. You can see that being reflected in their numbers and intrigue too. The past few albums I just haven't heard nearly the same buzz surrounding

Lost Society, Ultra-Violence, and Dust Bolt
All 3 started out as killer thrash metal bands and all of sudden started playing the most by-the-numbers metalcore to try and hop on the Asking Alexandria train.

They really could write a better industrial album if they took more time to study influential bands and albums of that style. It’s completely possible for death metal musicians to write good industrial metal. Godflesh is a perfect example

I've just listened to the full Born of Osiris discography this week and while I agree with the fact that they went more 'mainstream' with their sound in recent years I don't really see their Technical Deathcore/Death Metal days that interesting or groundbreaking as others might. To me it felt like a bunch of young dudes trying to write technical music without actually having the skills to have it be cohesive. And for Architects, judging by their 2 new singles and the departure of Josh Middleton I think they are somewhat returning to the previous sound like Holy Hell and before.

In their defense, it has to be hard to grow and expand as a traditional Death Metal band. Where can you go if you want to be more creative but still respect the legacy? I think that’s why so many fell on their faces later on. Chuck Schuldiner had the right idea: change the sound and entire vibe with every single record.

As for Opeth, yeah, I love their older stuff, but I respect them for doing what they want without compromise. Some of it is pretty good and it comes to life live.

I don't know if I can describe it properly, but everything after Colony for In Flames. There is a solid fanbase for that era of their music, and I love that that's the case. But Colony was their last front to back, no skip album from them for me. Also, they're a Ship of Theseus band; their first and last albums share no common member.

  • @embertheraccoon37
    @embertheraccoon37 26 днів тому +4

In Born of Osiris's case, I hate to say it was just because Jason Richardson left after The Discovery but... it might have been just that Jason Richardson left. His riffs and solos absolutely helped make the record a special one. And even as a defender of their stuff post-The Discovery, I can acknowledge that that was their peak. Meanwhile, Jason Richardson moved on and went to Chelsea Grin, which resulted in a very interesting EP and album, and I don't know if that's a band that changed for the worse or better myself.
One band I know that changed their sound for both the better and the worse is I See Stars. First two albums? Fine, but I didn't really vibe with them that much. Then we come upon Digital Renegade. I don't know what it is about that record, but they changed something to make it heavier. When Gnars Attacks hits with that angelic breakdown a minute in... I might be biased since this was the I See Stars record I started with, but DANG. Digital Renegade is the perfect example of how excellent electronicore can be. But the I See Stars fellows weren't going to just settle on that. Just a year later, New Demons dropped, which in my opinion evolved the traditional electronicore sound, not only making it heavier, but also adding more dubstep influence, additional production help from Celldweller... UGH, it's so perfect! Ten Thousand Feet, Violent Bounce, We're Not in Kansas Anymore, Murder Mitten... fantastic tracks. This is what electronicore was meant to be.
And then they fired their harsh vocalist. Honestly, I vibe with the record after New Demons, Treehouse. The recent singles? No. Just no. D4M4GE D4NE, or whatever? It's fine... But it's not feeling like I See Stars anymore. Even the Treehouse sound's not even there, and it's starting to sound lifeless. Compare it to Ten Thousand Feet (one of my favorite songs of all time), Gnars Attacks, We're Not In Kansas Anymore, or Filth Friends Unite, and you will see what I mean. I suppose that you could attribute that to the band getting older and maturing, maybe, but I'm going to say it: the worst decision they ever made was firing their unclean vocalist. Imagine where electronicore would have gone if he'd remained.
Long post, I know, but in terms of bands that changed their style for both the better and the worst, I See Stars is the band that comes to mind.

    • @TheMetalTempestYT
      @TheMetalTempestYT  26 днів тому +3

First off I can't BELIEVE i didn't think of I See Stars because they for sure would've made it onto the list had I thought of them. Their material has become generic Bad Omens worship in my opinion 😭
But I think you're totally right about BoO. I know people love to claim one member can't make or break a band but his influential cannot be dismissed and anyone thinking that didn't have a detriment on the songwriting is, no offense, sipping the copium hardcore.
Loved this comment though! Thanks a ton!

About Opeth. I think "their" last true albums are Deliverance and Damnation. Even though Ghost Reveries and Watershed are still good records, I always find some lack of cohesion in the songs when I listen to them, like there are two different bands, one playing death metal and the other prog rock/metal.
Heritage and Pale communion are just Steven Wilson's covers, Sorceress 70s prog covers and In cauda venenum a mix of the two

Really agreeing with all of these, especially Veil Of Maya. Perhaps I have nostalgia goggles because id was my first ever djent/deathcore album when I was a kid and got me into the genre but it just does NOT hit the same anymore. I'm definitely not opposed to heavy bands getting more melodic/adding cleans (I mean hell, Whitechapel added cleans for The Valley and that is hands down my favorite deathcore record of all time) but newer Veil of Maya just doesn't do it for me.

I skipped around the video a bit so maybe you mentioned this, but I’m surprised Slipknot isn’t on this list. Personally I feel like their sound has gradually declined in fairly straight downward path, with the exception of AHIG which I think is better than Vol3. Maybe it’s because their whole brand is changing their style every album, but I think it’s worth mentioning that a LOT of their og fanbase has all but written them off entirely especially with the release of their latest album which I think is by far their worst. I know a lot of people think WAYNK is just as subpar, but tbh it’s got some solid tracks on it that I think makes it a _decent_ album overall.
The only track I like off TESO is Acidic, because I discovered bluesy metal for the first time. Honestly the only thing that makes me still check their current stuff out, is that their live shows still go pretty hard

    * Linkin Park (they just became a generic Radio Rock/Pop band, they became the very thing they were mocked for. When they started they were being called “The Angry Backstreet Boys”, then they became a full on Radio Rock/PoP group after Meteora).
    * Papa Roach (they are pretty much a trend hopper band, they like to follow trends, but some of those trends they followed were awful, like in their Emo phase, then they became Buckcherry, then they became Imagine Dragons, then they became a Mumble Rap/Trap group, the only somewhat decent thing this band ever did was what they was originally doing)
    * Within Temptation (love the Symphonic stuff, but everything after their best album in The Heart of Everything just hasn’t been all that good, they felt they did everything they could as a Symphonic band and decided to do different things, but I just feel it hasn’t worked.)
    * Disturbed (first album is great, then they became boring after The Sickness, I really liked the funky grooves of The Sickness, but they stopped being rhythmic and became just boring)
    * Godsmack (their first 4 albums are great, then they became Nickelback)
    * KoRn (what the fuck was up with that Dubstep album?, worst thing they ever did)
    * Incubus (they’ve changed a lot over the years, but those first 2 albums were great, then nothing after)

The only one I disagree with is Born of Osiris. I don't think that what they've done post-Discovery has been better than the New Reign, A Higher Place, and the Discovery but I still think they can crank out great tunes. Soul Sphere and The Simulation are great examples. I agree with the others. I've never been an Asking Alexandria fan but even I agree that they alienated their audience. Opeth's move into prog rock was good with Heritage but everything after that was boring and pretentious. The last great Morbid Angel album was Gateways to Annihilation because everything after that has been either bland like Kingdoms Disdained or outright terrible like Illud Divinum Insanus. Architects last great album was All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us and they went downhill when Tom Searle passed away. Suicide Silence also went downhill when Mitch Lucker passed away. Veil of Maya went downhill when Brandon Butler left and I consider Eclipse to be their last good album.

This is going to sound petty, but for me it's Dimmu Borgir. The petty part is simply because they started singing their songs in English. I much prefer it when a band sings in their native language. For example, if there is a choice to hear an album in English or the band's native language, I want to hear it in the native language. An example is the In Cauda Venenum album by Opeth, when I was able to hear it in their native Swedish. I don't know why I prefer this; but a lot of the bands I listen to don't sing in English.

My pick - Destruction. Both the Neo-Destruction shit and the modern stuff post-reunion.
Sentence of Death up to Cracked Brain were some amazing and creative albums, super innovative, ahead of the curve. Then in the 90s they got the huge Pantera boner that a lot of bands seemed to get and it's just abysmal. After their reunion with Schmier, they release The Antichrist which is one of their best works to date, yes, but they have basically made every album since then a copy of that one.
You can listen to any modern Destruction release (post-2000) and it'll be pretty good, but they all follow the same formula. It's not bad, I enjoyed The Antichrist, Under Attack and Spiritual Genocide, I enjoy most of them to some degree, but it's just not nearly the level of awesome they were in the 80's.

I'm gonna throw my vote in for Electric Wizard. Their first three albums (self-titled, Come My Fanatics, and Dopethrone) were absolutely monsterous and iconic among the Doom Metal genre, and Dopethrone's influence is hard to quantify. It's undeniable a genre staple. Even beyond the scope of Doom Metal, those albums consist of some of the densest and heaviest music I've ever heard. Then everything after We Live and Let Us Prey became generic stoner rock akin to a shitty version of Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. Electric Wizard isn't a stranger to writing long songs, but most post-2005 materials suffers from what was said about Opeth in this video: "they don't have the substance to back it up".

I think it's a bit hit or miss for me and I'm a huge BMTH fan of all their works. Records like Amo are hit or miss, and Music to Listen To is strange but I thought survival horror was sick and their recent stuff has been pretty dope in its own way! But I'd definitely thought about them

I honestly don't know if I can name any bands that I liked/ liked more after a drastic style shift. Like maybe Rush, if we wanna talk about how they were a Led Zeppelin clone and then became one of the biggest progressive rock bands, because they went through a lot of changes and were great from the late 70s to the late 80s.
I can name tons of bands that I fell out of love with after their first album or two though. Veil of Maya is a big one. I think False Idol and Matriarch are still similar musically to their previous work, but the vocals are just so weak in comparison to the previous vocalist. I don't care for his boring fry screams, the previous vocalist had a very recognizable false chord scream. The singing also just felt out of place, like they just shoehorned it in. I'm not opposed to singing, I like it in a lot of contexts, but the way they do it doesn't work for me. The songs became very basic and boring after that.
Born of Osiris is a similar thing. The New Reign is still one of my favourite albums of all time, and A Higher Place is better now that I've tweaked the master a little bit. I like the songs but they just sounded weird so I didn't listen to it for years. I went through their entire discography like a year or two ago and did find a few songs here and there that have their signature sound, but really it's the drummer who has that sound. Cameron's side project UNSOLICITED is just old BOO but without vocals. If it had vocals, it would be great. So much of their music is quite boring because the songs don't really go anywhere, they sound the same from start to finish.
So many bands have become boring and generic that I don't listen to much metal these days. It's hard to like metalcore when they all they use is pop song structures or generally aren't very interesting. I'd much rather listen to old Bring Me The Horizon, The Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria, etc. than their newer stuff. It's not the song structure itself that's the problem, I mostly listen to Japanese idol groups these days, which is very generic in it's own bubble, but the songs are so catchy and they throw in random shit all the time so it's very enjoyable. It's the combination of metalcore, which can be very monotonous and boring, which is where tempo changes, key changes, etc. come in handy, and very standard song structure that makes it unenjoyable. I think Chelsea Grin is killing it, After The Burial is still good, Belmont's new album Liminal is great if you wanna include them in metal, Paledusk is doing cool stuff, Protest The Hero never misses, and I do like a lot of the songs on the latest Suicide Silence album although I don't love the mix.

Opeth changed because Mikeal realized that the prevalent attitudes in modern metal is not what it was when he grew up in the late-80's and throughout the 90's. What people consider "metal" now is fuckin' lame. I fully believe that he changed the band's style specifically so that he would not have to tour with awful, generic death metal/deathcore and metalcore bands for the rest of his life. I think he made Heritage specifically to get out of his deal with Roadrunner because RR was just fondling Corey Taylor's ballsack back then. Katatonia made similar changes, but it wasn't so noticeable because they never got as big as Opeth and they started shifting away from their black/doom sound pretty early on. I recall a Sounds of the Underground that had Opeth out with a bunch of metalcore stuff... Lamb of God, Chimaira and a bunch of mid-2000s bands like that and even back then I was like, "that... makes no sense." Opeth goes well with In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amorphis, etc. I don't know, I was a huge Opeth fan and still am to some degree, but I could tell Mikeal didn't really "fit in" with the scene. For better or worse, he's a bit of a pretentious fuck and I think the decision to change sounds was mainly so he wouldn't have to deal with a bunch of fucktarded "metalheads" that think anything with screamy-scream vocals and drop-tuned Chug McDjentchug riffs is "so Metal, brah." I don't blame Mikeal one bit for wanting to step away from the Roadrunner/Core Metal scene.

Opeth toured with the likes of Alcest and that's where they should have headed. Atmospheric Black Metal that kept hints of Jazz and 70s Prog

Gojira. Their most recent stuff keeps getting closer and closer to Arena rock with lyrics like "FIGHT, RISE UP". The mixing really sucks, it works for Rock but they're a metal band. Just listen to The link or terra incognita, it sounds heavy and raw, it is organic and fucking shreds.
I can't say I am not exited for their next album but I'm also scared that gojira just won't sound like gojira anymore

I love Opeth, and that includes the entire discography. Much like with Metallica, I do like the classic era more, but I love the musical diversity. Orchid-Watershed is amazing to me, but I think they’ve full refined their new sound with In Cauda Venenum. Hopefully, they pull it back and fuse the sounds of every era like Metallica did on their last three. I think that’s the best move for legacy bands: settle on a sound that respects everything you have done.
I can’t defend Morbid Angel the same way, unfortunately. I don’t know what the tell they were thinking.

I'd say Black Sabbath....They started Heavy Metal, or at least helped create it and made it popular. They had semi-consistent sound through the 70's with Ozzy, Tony, Geezer, and Bill as the main members. Then Ozzy left and Dio took over as vocalist making a similar but ultimately different sound adding to Black Sabbath's legacy and those 2 albums are two of the greatest albums ever. Then Dio left and Sabbath went down hill fast! Multiple lineup changes led to mediocre music and unmemorable songs. You had Tony Martin for 5 albums and while Dio only has 3 (technically 4 with Heaven & Hell) Dio was able to take Sabbath and add to it and create something special while Tony just was just there. When Dio took back over, they created another masterpiece, Dehumanizer. TV Crimes, I, and Time Machine are just a few I like from it...then Tony came back and ruined it. Ice-T? why?! I'm not saying he's a bad artist either just to me he doesn't fit with Sabbath...almost like they were trying to stay relevant haha. Forbidden would be their last album till The Devil You Know came out when they got back to their sound and while not labeled Black Sabbath, it 100% is. Then they would end were it started with Ozzy taking back over on 13 making one of their best songs God is Dead but the only highlights of the 80's and 90's is Dio.

Seconding studio Opeth so much. Sorceress has its like 3 moments and after that I just was not interested in new albums anymore so far. Worse offense has to be fucking Atreyu. After the 9/10 Portrait in Black for Underworld Evolution, they drop sub par but fine Deathgrip on yesterday. FOLLOWED BY THE WORST ALBUM OF ALL HELL, Lead sails, paper anchor. They have 1,5 decent albums after that era but it's kinda too late. Their shouter leaves, making the band even MORE Poprock than in 2008 so they are totally not worth the name Atreyu anymore since Atreyu is the Varkatzas/Saller synergy. Also, am I the only one who does not like Slipknot post Vol 3 at all? In Flames have also become really poppy. Underoath is a double edged sword, finally. Christian themed Blackened Deathcore UO was such a fucking beast which will sadly never return. Still Spencer UO had some good Post Hardcore tracks as well as some Deftones resemblances on Disambiguation LP
