Why Mad Max Furiosa DESTROYS Hollywood Feminism | Review

  • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga recently opened to very positive reviews from both critics and fans. After watching Mad Max Furiosa myself I can see why, as this film was thoroughly entertaining and well made. However the best part of this movie to me is the way that the character of Furiosa doesn't fall into the same trap as most Hollywood lead female characters, where they are all just perfect and have no flaws. Furiosa suffers a lot of set backs and is deeply flawed but that is what makes her an interesting hero. So really Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga destroyed modern Hollywood's feminist pandering. All in all I hope you guys enjoy my Mad Max Furiosa review!

Really? I thought it sucked and insulted the intelligence of the viewer. Like, "THIS WORLD MAKES US CRUEL IN CASE YOUR IQ IS 78 AND YOU DIDN'T FIGURE IT OUT ON YOUR OWN YOU IDIOT WHO BOUGHT A TICKET TO THIS MOVIE BECAUSE YOU HOPED IT WOULD BE AS GOOD AS FURY ROAD I MEAN LOL".
And what really pissed me off is; she comes close, off guard, completely idiotic, and he just lays there without jumping her and beating the shi* out of her as he should and absolutely could? So the final scene could happen? The REAL ending of that movie from that point on should've been him jumping her and nearly killing her, but Joe and his lot showing up after them and killing him instead. And Joe interpreting all that as her risking her life for HIS goals?
That would establish a connection between Joe and Furiosa which is implied in Fury Road. Like when the Rig leaves in Fury Road, it's a big event, and Joe calls out his Imperator Furiosa in the manner that suggests great respect and meaning she has for him and the community of the Citadel. Fury Road says little; but keeps implying a deep connection that both, the Breeders and Furiosa have with the Immortan; both as the cult leader AND as a man. And he has a deep connection with them too. He's absolutely devastated when he loses a child, he's broken, sitting on a rock and singing to himself when he loses all of them; he's INCREDULOUS when Furiosa betrays him. The final battle between him and Furiosa is loaded and hugely impactful because there's an implied connection between them; his huge respect for her and the disappointment she'd betray. NOTHING, NOT ONE THING is established in "Furiosa" regarding ANY of that, not even at that stupid ending which was the last chance for it. I stand disgusted.
If you saw Furiosa first and then went to see Fury Road for the first time; you'd absolutely be confused by WHY is Joe doing ANY of the things he's doing in that movie; when NOTHING in Furiosa implies any kind of connection she has with him; or any kind of meaning she has to the War Boys. She's just second fiddle to a faceless dude named Jack who basically just commands her to do stuff. When he loses a child in Furiosa; Joe just goes enh another day at the office. When Furiosa talks to him in "Furiosa", he just ignores her anh another cray cray. The ending had a chance to fix all that; instead it gave us a stupid long winded speech and informed Joe would allow that last thing with Dementus to happen, if it did happen, and he just wouldn't give an eff.
It's really weak and shitty. Weak and shitty.

The Bride in Kill Bill had to be one of the best female leads in the last few decades. She wasn't perfect by any stretch. She was very broken. She was also insufficient to the task at first. Much like Thor in Infinity War, the Bride needed a new weapon so she could have a real chance at success. She knew exactly what she needed - a Hitori Honso sword.
She didn't do a lot of talking. She didn't know everything about quantum physics or philosophy. She knew how to kill and she had a clear purpose of vengeance. It's right there in the title. Her purpose was to kill Bill. And that was enough for her to proceed. It was also plenty for the audience to enjoy.

Ya know, no one ever gives Mona Lisa Vito from My Cousin Vinny any love for being a strong female lead. I’ve been on a campaign trail for this role that Tomei absolutely killed. She was great! But the character as she interpreted it stood by her man, never tried to take the lead, never admonished him when he didn’t deserve it and when she did, she did so in private, and, in the end, didn’t know the proof needed to get the boys exonerated, her husband did, but he called on her to be a flipping expert on car mechanics and she wowed the audience with her knowledge, knowledge which did end up winning the case. What a woman!!

It also takes itself pretty damn seriously, too. I remember seeing a teaser trailer for it ( which looked _awful_ ) and, like I said above, picking it up later after seeing the glowing Steam reviews
The bonus irony is that the game was explicitly stated to be non-canon, even though it dovetailed perfectly into Fury Road and actually _helped_ that movie make more sense

@@reaps912 Was it non-canon? I thought it was meant to be canon. But Furiosa kinda makes it non-canon, as Scrotus doesn't look anything like he does in the game. Scrotus is NOT in Fury Road, which the game explains by Max killing him. I'm pretty certain the game borrowed ideas from Miller himself, hence the reason Furiosa seems to reference it. I've read Miller has another Mad Max script written called Wasteland that is supposed to again be a prequel, but this time will tell Max's story leading up to Fury Road. I think the game was based off the ideas for that script. I don't think Miller had written the script for Wasteland yet at that time. I think he gave them his ideas for what eventually would become the Wasteland script, and they based the game around those ideas. I think what we'll see in Wasteland is essentially a movie adaptation of the game, which game was based on the ideas for that very movie, which hadn't actually been written yet at that time lol. It's weird, but, yeah, I think Wasteland is going to be a canonized take on the events that took place in the game. I could be totally wrong, but I think that's right.

There’s elements of Furiosa’s story that cannot be disconnected to her being a female character (her childhood interactions with Rictus Erectus in particular), but otherwise her story in this film and her characterization overall is that of a child experiencing the most severe traumas a person can endure and still choosing their own autonomy in the end. It's like what Doug Walker said in his review of Old vs New Cinderella:
"People miss what makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way, that's what makes them relatable. But this (live-action) Cinderella doesn't have any flaws. At least, none that they'll acknowledge. You could argue she's too passive, but what does she do to solve that? Let someone else save the day and not even try!
This (animated) Cinderella at least gave a shit, because while having a strong character be strong is good, it's more important to have them interesting first."

2:00 I was thinking about this after seeing Fury Road. Just the fact that she is beaten a lot already eliminates the image of a feminist character. In Fury Road, she even gets beaten by Max with a car door. But even so, she manages to overcome difficulties and catch the villains. Also, I think it's important to highlight the fact that Max receives a great tribute in Fury Road, despite his little screen time (controversy?). He is legendarily overpowered. He defeats Bullet Farmer and three heavily armed bodyguards alone, without a car, without a firearm and without bleeding. I mean, George Miller makes it clear that Max is more lethal than Furiosa, but he doesn't diminish her. He shows their fighting style and how they need each other to survive. I would say that Miller knew, at least in Fury Road, how to represent men and women.

@@jackmuaddib3745 Exactly. I'm happy to see a film about Furiosa, as it expands the Mad Max universe. But I would really be very happy to see a film focused on Max with practical effects like Fury Road. I mean, it's REALLY cool to see all of Furiosa's cities and landscapes that are impossible to build in real life for the film. But, it would be very satisfying to see, for example, a Mad Max focusing on Max and small cities made of scrap metal that are absolutely possible to build. Obviously, it would need a good script, but that would bring Fury Road's sense of realism and practicality.

The theme that bothers me the most in a number of these "girl-boss" shows and movies is just how overtly cruelly the male characters are often treated, essentially just being used for target practice. Seeing one sex in particular being deliberately singled out and brutalized like that in media makes me very uncomfortable, regardless of which direction. I do not watch things where female characters are being specifically targeted and abused in that way, and I don't want to see it happen to male characters either.

A common thread of George Miller's movies as well as other great Australian cinema is quite a bit of screen time spent on characterizations which often include the location as a character. Ripley, the Bride, Sara Conner, Arya Stark even Buffy and Xena were all created by Old School filmmakers as is Furiosa. The new generation can write excellent female leads for comedies, romcoms and the like but Action Women seems beyond them. They seem to fall into the Mary Sue trap , only perfect women can be action heroes. This is really backward thinking artistically and politically and makes for an unlikeable heroine and a boring film.

I don't think it's as simple as 'looking at how it was done in the past' - there's a need to understand *the context* for the earlier bad-arse female characters; very few women will ever match a man's physicality- Furiosa never does - what she shows she _can_ do, is apply ingenuity, even as a child (without making her male counterparts; Max originally - Imperator Jack in this one- look like idiots) to a situation, or use other character's flaws against them, to avoid physical conflict (the area in which they are obviously weaker, most of the time) - of course, that doesn't mean female characters lack in flaws, but those flaws are things that _can_ create natural minor conflict, tension, or points of drama- which leads to the natural give-&-take within a good story -- as well as the natural weaknesses prevent them going toe-to-toe with their adversaries in the same physical way that two male characters would, at the end- meaning the conclusion can have more variance.
I enjoyed a lot of it - I wasn't 'bored'- but I think there were more than a few moments that could definitely have been tightened up- & there were other moments that _could_ have been let linger, but weren't -- I liked the character of Imperator Jack, how the two of them communicated & interacted in the low-key way they did, & how his relationship with Furiosa evolved.
I kind of agree with comments I've heard that the cutting of the 40-Day War seems like an odd choice- when it appeared that so much was leading up to it, & yet- it's pretty clear that Furiosa's story *_isn't_* about the wider war...
Chris was *amazing* as the lead antagonist- deliciously unhinged, & looking like he was having the time of his life filming it; it's undeniable that Immortan Joe was a sh^t person- _however_ , he's ruled over this area for a *long* while, tyrannically or not- however, the Citadel is functioning & supplies are managed, more or less- & he's developed mutual arrangements with the only other 'powers' - whereas, ironically, though Dementus had held his horde together, seemingly through sheer force of will- for who knows how long- & though failing against the Citadel, manages to take GasTown, & even (sort of) negotiate a deal to keep & administer it- & yet it all falls apart so quickly: the man had enough charisma to have *hundreds* follow him- but _one_ subordinate's subordinate not taking orders from him, in one moment is enough to pique him & hit his ego, triggering jealousy & spite enough to anatagonise & splinter Octoboss' {the guy with the black horns} group of them off.
And the denizens of GasTown are on the edge of revolt in barely more than a decade - he even managed to take the Bullet Farm, but he's utterly unable to control them; I feel like it was an interesting statement about someone with immense charisma- yet proves incompetent in administration -- someone who wants more power than they have, but has no real clue how to handle it & what to do with it- though it's also possible that his eventual failure has something to do with nihilistic personality- was he doing what he did, purely as something to do, after all his losses? Did he _really_ have ideas toward any kind of long-term leadership...?

A cinematic masterpiece that has left me speechless!
The time and patience one has to dedicate their life, in making a lifetime work, coupled with an unquenchable thirst to provide sheer awe and cinematic brilliance technically and emotionally, stands out at every single minute throughout the movie.
Apocalyptic genres are quite easy to enact, since they require an astute understanding of how humans operate on baseline consciousness. George Miller did a fantastic job at delivering this exact sentiment. I am overall pleased with the aesthetic cinematic treatment compared to its predecessor for continuity and not overdoing with CG.
Dramatic pacing and character introduction is given justice with sufficient screen time to develop their story arcs and finale plot. The wasteland is merciless and spares nobody.

They don't handle it, and they absolutely fail to establish the connection between her and the Immortan Joe. when you see Furiosa; you will be absolutely confused about WHY is she sent off so gloriously and with such respect by the Immortan Joe at the beginning of the Fury Road; it's left completely unadressed and confusing. The way she actually comes to the Citadel in "Furiosa" is some of the worst writing they possibly could've chosen to do; and the way she becomes a "warboy" is just hilariously contrived.
This COULD have been good; especially because the Immortan isn't "a bad guy" per se; not in the context of that world. The world of Fury Road is a world in which everyone is insane because of the cruelty of the situation. It would have been very easy to write Furiosa into siding with Joe and then gradually realising the kind of a man he is, but they don't do that. They just ignore all the character building done in Fury Road and do no character building here at all.

Joe sees how she’s both ruthless and intelligent, those are qualities the other members of his circle don’t have at once, that’s why he reveres her. She still hates him because he keeps women as breeders. So freeing them became a side-quest for her returning to the Green Place. Remember she’s from the Vuvalini, the Many Mothers. Here's the thing - I can't judge the cgi but mad max has never been political(I mean it has been political in the sense of it being based on the cold war in a post nuclear apocalypse but that isn't to be construed as modern politics of feminism etc that movies and reviewers fall into nowadays).
Here's a short diatribe:- fury road is genuinely one of the best stories of all time. Max loses his humanity is reduced to a single instinct of survival. You see him like an animal while he wears a mask and has no care for furiosa and the wives. He refuses to even reveal his name Through furiosa he learns trust and regains his lost humanity, and furiosa learns(from Max) not to run from her problems but to face them head on. When they work together society flusters
It's a deep character study and unlike other action movies the general audience does not get it because they need exposition.
For example when the warboy screams witness me and jumps on a car you learn 3 things from that scene alone:- There's a culture of sacrificing yourself for glory There's a higher figure and a reward in the afterlife And that these youngsters are brainwashed
Any other director would have explained this stuff through dialogue but not Miller who paints a story visually not through dialogue
Another example is the blood transfusion scene at the end between max and furiosa. There's no explanation because we see max nux get blood from Max in a similar fashion and the audience can infer through that
Another example is when nux steals Max's shoes or when max takes furiosas guns. These items are returned to their respective owners once max learns to trust them and let's go of his survival instinct and becomes human again
It's a story about a man who has forgotten his own name and humanity and who gains it back by trusting others.
Every single scene is jam packed with story telling and there's no filler. For example the old woman gives a wife seeds. Bullets are called anti seed. It's not spelled out because the film follows a fundamental Assumption: i.e Our audience is smart and they can infer our message through little hints that need no excessive explanation.
I can keep going but you get the point
People compare mad max to fast and furious type stuff. In films like F&f or John wick, there's action then there's a pause to develop character and then the action continues. Whereas in mad max the action is the story
Furiosa was written long before fury road even began filming. It's not like Miller wanted to make a feminist film, it's just that he made a film and people attached their own ideologies to it. It's not like the rings of power where a huge corporation went against the fans and the story to fuel an ideology. This is the Creator of the franchise making a film he always wanted to make.
Its Miller not your average Hollywood Director.

I think one thing that could’ve been fixed was that, when furiosa got taken as a kid, she never screamed, never tried to fight back and the one time she tried to escape she never tried to shout or scream for help when she got grabbed again
Along with that she never screamed when her mother died in front of her
Or tried to escape from dementus when Joe’s men were grabbing the bikes in the little fight demntus had with joe and the machine that had furiosa was being taken
Instead she ended up staying in the thing and didn’t try to escape
Seems weird to me in that part ngl
Also I wish we got to see more of the war between joe and dementus at the end
Would’ve been so amazing to have seen!

Furiosa remains more in line with the likes of Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley. Not some badass female cliche character meant to show that "women can do it!" just as well. She's even cast as gaunt rather than STRONK FEMALE becuz she hasn't been living off luxuries growing up at Joe's Citadel. She's just a person trying to survive and make it home. And whilst she excels with the gun and driving later on, she receives mostly quite a beating else. So much so that she eventually loses an arm in the process. Don't think that's a spoiler at this point. ;)
It would be pretty cool irony though if the peeps boycotting this movie because supposedly "woke / feminist propaganda" wouldn't get the Max film next that was planned to complete the "Fury Road" story. Because that's what this entire prequel thing was meant to be about from the go, with the stories already written when Fury Road started filming.

Mainly context. For example 'How did Bilbo get the Ring, what adventure was Gandalf talking about involving Bilbo and a dragon' or 'How did Anakin become Darth Vader'. These are questions that, if done right, can produce great stories. Hell, Rogue One proves that.

I don't even watch movies anymore. But in the context of today's socio-politics, I hate especially prequels. There are only 3 motives Predowood produce prequels, sometimes the 3 motives are valid at the same time.
1: exploit IP the way you squeeze blood out of a dried up, brittle-to-dust stone.
2: they screwed up sequels so much to kill the IP the only leeway left to them is prequels.
3: they screwed up sequels so much they need prequels to recontextualize the whole IP and justify the modern day ideology that killed the IP, robbing OG characters' creativity and coolness and heroism to give credit and elevate new "prequel" characters, because the "prequels" do it "better" and "first" before the OGs, with engaging visuals thanks to modern day advanced technology.

The weird thing is I've been playing the Mad Max videogame again recently, and it has a surprisingly good plot and characters in it - including Max. It also takes itself pretty damn seriously, too. I remember seeing a teaser trailer for it ( which looked _awful_ ) and then picking it up later after seeing the glowing Steam reviews
The bonus irony is that the game was explicitly stated to be non-canon, even though it dovetailed perfectly into Fury Road and actually _helped_ that movie make more sense
And now here we are, and it seems like several chunks of the game (Dementus, Scrotus etc) have been ripped out and transplanted into _this_ film

You'd be missing out then, tbh this movie felt more like it belonged to Chris Hemsworth. Nothing wrong with female leads when done right, as the other person said, Aliens is a perfect example, or Terminator 2 etc...at this point you're just showing your ignorance and writing off an entire gender. Not every movie with a female is a girlboss powerhouse...about the only few physical bits in this that Furiosa does, she hits Dementus a few times and looks exhausted from a few punches as he shrugs it off, you're thinking of the kind that can fight 10 men and win with just her fists...this is not that sorta movie.
