For me to really dislike a band it not only has to have bad music, but it has to be popular enough that I keep hearing its bad music, thereby causing me to really hate them.
I have seen bands at bars whom I did not like, but I only heard them once, and I do not even remember their names. I can’t really hate them or say they are overrated.

The two are all too often used interchangeably.... and incorrectly... as are their opposites. I've long said that underrated is the most over used and misused word in music.
How many times have we heard - ">insert-name-here< is the greatest guitarist / drummer / singer / whatever... EVER!!" when in fact, they're competent but pretty much just average but they play stuff that person happens to find pleasing?
In nearly all cases, if you played 5 random musicians for them playing unfamiliar music, they couldn't pick out the one who they claim is the greatest.

If The Beatles had stuck to their early 3 minute pop songs then they would have been overrated. BUT, when you consider how they developed (Abbey Road, Revolver, St Peppers) in such a short space of time to describe them as overrated is ridiculous.

@@canalesworks1247 See, one of my personal central musical criticism tropes is that if The Beatles died in a plane crash after A Hard Day’s Night, they’d still be the band that completely revolutionized pop/rock music. “She Loves You” is the rarely-acknowledged most impactful single of all time.

@@scottanthonyweidner8692You're completely on the mark, not least because A Hard Day's Night was completely self-composed, which was unprecedented at the time. That album is the reason that artists who don't write their own material are now maligned, when in fact it was the norm before that. Even brilliant originals like Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison padded their albums out with covers.

After reading a couple hundred very entertaining comments, I wonder if the label "overrated" is being confused with "overplayed" or "oversaturated?" At 68, I'm old enough to pretty much remember it all when it was shiny and new, but there are certain bands that are on perpetual rotation on classic rock stations. For example, I am sick to death of Stairway To Heaven, but I also struggle to think of a better crafted rock song (as opposed to rock n' roll). There is a reason why Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Beatles are oversaturated, at least for those of us who heard these songs at least 100,000 times. But overrated? Not at all. For me, it is about genres. The Velvet Underground is overrated to me because they seemed to be more a New York City thing than a national band, and the Cool Kids listened to something edgy and different than the usual stuff on the radio. I never was into punk or grunge, either. My tastes tend to run towards musicianship, which is why I love prog and mainstream hard rock. But everyone has different tastes.

Madness had 17 top 10 and 31 top 40 hits on the UK charts. Most only know them by their "nutty ska" sound but they had a SLEW of perfect pop songs after that first album. They had a lot of different styles, so of course some you may not like.

The Beatles music has no swing, it is soulless. Has anyone ever danced to a Beatles song bar 1 or 2 songs? It all sounds incredibly dated too. Compare the catchy and admittedly danceable Lady Madonna from 1968 to the quite similar I'm Waiting For The Man from 1967 which has a layered groove. Personally I'm not one for ranking music, people should just listen to what they like, and in the proportion that maximises their own enjoyment. In that regard more or less every band, album and song is over rated because terms like "essential listening", are bandied around. They are just another band that can be happily absent from a record collection of hundreds of albums and the owner wouldn't miss them one bit.
In my opinion there are only two things related to the type of music this channel discusses where one should not use the over rated label, the albums Dark Side Of The Moon and Rumours. These have been purchased in large numbers in multiple countries continuously since their release over 50 years and almost 50 years ago respectively. In contrast Sgt Pepper relies on 10 multiple anniversary years and that publicity to get sales. The much more recent Thriller, widely documented as the biggest seller has dropped off considerably in the last decade and thus maybe much more of its time; it is outside the scope of this topic but a good reference point.
When it comes to streaming the only classic rock artist that makes an impression is Queen, so there is an argument to be made they get a pass too as they are clearly reaching across multiple generations.

    Lists like this...
Reasons to highly rate a band.
    1. You are a musician and appreciate the skill of the musicians and song writing.
    2. The music is a touchstone in your life, and those touchstones are myriad.
    3. It was the music of your people, your youth, your crew, your family, your whatever.
    Reasons bands get overblown
    1. Radio
    2. Media
    3. Sales driven push $$
To see past the curtain of Oz, one must recognize them in context of time.
For the Iconic bands on the list you must have perspective. If an individual would take the time to listen to the music of the other bands of the era and what music they were producing and also what came before them, then and only then can you see/hear why some of these bands are so highly regarded at the time. Over time they become legend for breaking ground. I would never expect my teenage grand-kids to listen to the Beatles at my house and it become a life changing experience for him or her. They have no context or point of reference.
I fell in love with 1950s Doo-Wop at 13 years old after seeing American Graffiti in 1973. As soon as that music was put in context the lights came on and I wanted more doo-wop, a Ducks Ass haircut and a hotrod.

One could make a single album of top songs from all four of their members' first albums, and it wouldn't touch anything the Beatles made collectively after Revolver. Given that John and Paul were the songwriters of 80% or more of the albums, which ones from McCartney and Plastic Ono Band (I won't bother mentioning Two Virgins) would fill an album? George would have two great songs from All Things Must Pass, Ringo has nothing from Beaucoups of Blues, Paul has very little solid material from his debut, which leaves John with...what? Mother, God and Working Class Hero? Even Let It Be and Magical Mystery Tour was stronger. I grew up listening to my brother saying the Stones were much better than the Beatles. That was his opinion. If it was left up to the Stones, no other British band would have made it here, because at the time, they were a cover band, and basically a bar band. Whether you like it or not, the Beatles were trailblazers, and they brought rock and roll music to maturity. In their era, they inspired others to push the musical envelope, making other bands try to top them. Unlike most of the bands from the ‘70s on, they were not satisfied repeating the same formula over and over just to sell records. If you don’t like them, fine. Everyone has different tastes. If anything, they are under-rated by the muso snobs who didn't give Nevermind anything other than lukewarm reviews, yet which became the biggest album on the planet for a good five years. It's hard for those brought up on "traditional" hard rock to understand the blood curdling rage us (then) young men felt at the time, that Kurt Cobain filled in the late 80's and early 90's with his brand of melody grunge pop filled lyric and slow fast slow thunderclap noise of wonderfully joyous arrangements and yet awfully dark.... 'Polly' ; 'Something in the way', through to "In bloom" 'et all - that was also radio friendly. Plus the dude was a good looking lad that coulda had any lady he wanted, but ended up with The Hole lady...we know how that all turned out before he joined the 27 club. But his reviews on certain genres are the most biased opinions in music. He constantly puts down heavy metal and prog. Loves almost anything punk or rap. He gave a record an A without really listening to it. What is great now is you can now listen to albums before you buy them. However, I do respect your opinion.

I enjoy these videos immensely, having said that lists of favorite bands, bands I hate, you hate, underrated, or overrated is very subjective, one thing I cannot stand is people who are extremely narrow minded in their musical tastes and belittle others if they enjoy bands or artists they do not enjoy themselves, I also find as I have grown older I have expanded my own musical palette and come to appreciate bands I would not have given a passing thought to when I was younger which proves that a love of music is something that lasts a lifetime and changes as much as we do on our journey through life.

As someone who was in my early 20s when Oasis broke through, I totally didn't get the hype around them - I didn't get it at the time and nothing's changed since. Sure, they have some decent songs, even some classic songs, but they're not - and never were in my opinion - a particularly great band. A lot of the bands mentioned here have stood the test of time, and will continue to do so - in fifty years people will still know who Floyd and Zep and The Beatles are, no question about it. But my prediction is that Oasis won't endure in the same way, and that over time they'll become increasingly forgotten.

When the Gallagher’s decided to fire their rhythm section, the new guys had the unenviable task of just mimicking the more terrible older musicians. And not causing a fight. They mostly have 'some' great songs or even albums. But to faun over these people for getting out of bed and gracing us with their presence seems to go too far. I agree that I have a niggling feeling that Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are a bit overrated in comparison to what else was happening in their salad days. I will defend Nirvana to an extent in that our poor lost soul Kurt was not the most musically gifted but his voice had an emotional/fragile tenor that really spoke to a generation that really sparked an awareness of vunerability that no one else in mainstream rock music did. I think that the current "woke" culture as well as the impending bed-wetting nu metal culture owes a lot to him. He was the CCR/John Fogerty of his generation.

This is great. I love your deadpan delivery, even-handedness and range of knowledge. Good catch on the Bert Jansch episode, but see also Davey Graham (White Summer and Over the Hills both cop his version of She Moved through the fair). The Dead weren't particularly ill-disciplined when they played with Bob Bylan, by the way. It's only with the VE that I disagree with any of the choices here. If nothing else, it gave us Lou Reed. Do you really think the Beatles were that good. Borrowed from Bob Dylan? Well, yes, but more. By the time Sgt Pepper came out Bob had already released Bringing it all back home, Highway 61 revisited and Blonde on Blonde (first rock double album - beats Zappa's double by a week and Sgt Pepper by just under a year (Highway 61 kills it by about 18 months)!). So whos driving the album culture now? Obviously you do credit Dylan, but don't dismiss this as a Dylan Fan Rant. I should point out that even very good bands can be over-rated, and some of the ones on your list (not Nirvana, not Oasis, by the way) are very good, but still over-rated. Cheers.

I don't agree with at least half that list. I think people who were not old enough to listen to these bands when they were releasing albums or were maybe too old to understand their influence on contemporary music when they came out would say they are overrated. Led Zeppelin was a huge influence. Yes, they stole other people's music like the Rolling Stones seemed to do in the early days.
To me, some of the most overrated bands are Kiss and Guns n Roses. They were neither good nor unique but have a heavy following from mostly young boys at the time who grew up thinking they were the best bands in the world.
Two artists I find to be overrated because of the bands they used to be in are Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osborne. Neither one is anywhere as good asbthe bands they left. I also think Peter Gabriel's solo career produced inferior music to Genesis. To me, it was a letdown.
There are a lot of bands and musicians releasing music these days who are overrated because of how many hits they get from streaming sources. Musical contestant shows and streaming have produced a lot of bland, similar sounding artists who seem to be very popular now.
By the way, how is the Grateful Dead overrated. You either like them or you don't. They did not have a lot of hit songs. People who follow them mostly like their live music, so if you didn't follow them, you would have no idea what the band is all about. Lots of people might say the Allman Brothers were a great jam band, but I would argue that the Dead were better.
Sadly, most people who would say Pink Floyd is overrated probably haven't listened to their entire catalog. They made a lot of music, and it isn't just The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon.
People are entitled to their opinions, but I am surprised by the bands that were called out on this list and by the ones that are missing.

It's funny how Guns and Roses, or Queen, wasn't here but Led Zeppelin, Rush, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd and The Beatles were. As a few mentioned below, it's again one of those "these guys are popular so I hate them" lists. Every one of these bands were highly influential, except for maybe Oasis. You can't be overrated when you've influenced a whole generation of musicians, whether a person likes them or not.

How is Aerosmith not on this list? Every single song they released from 1980 on is the same track with different lyrics.

Most online criticism of Nirvana often comes across as elitist and snobbish.
What Nirvana did was so basic, so derivative and so lacking in depth that you'd think critics would manage to do something better at some point in their lives.
There seems be an attitude among some that music is either as complex as jazz-fusion or prog rock at its most experimental or it's 'mainstream' garbage.
I'm not saying that anyone has to like Nirvana. But I don't think writing hits is a crime especially hits that define an entire generation and epoch. Nor is it a fair to act like just because Kurt Cobain wasn't Tom Scholz or Frank Zappa that his contribution and creativity deserves no respect.

Morning Barry. There is lot of over rated videos about at the moment. We all have different ears. There are no over rated bands. We all like different styles and music. My favourite band of all times are Rush. Very very few of my muso friends like them and my Mrs abhors them. She attended one of my favourite gigs and she hated it.
I’ve never rated ELP (I know, sacrilege)! But appreciate how good they were and would never consider them over rated.
I did see the Andy Edwards video and just thought it was pretentious tosh.
    Hey ho.

I absolutely agree The Beatles were over rated hugely. When you play instruments yourself, and have qualifications in music production, and really understand music, you can see the truth. The truth is, The Beatles were cheesy, simplistic, basic, rubbish. Their defining moment (Sgt Peppers) was only decent because Pink Floyd were in another room at Abby Road recording Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, and the members of The Beatles took turns sneaking in to listen (copy) what Floyd were doing.
Led Zep absolutely over rated, Page was just a thief who stole all of his best bits from other better musicians.
People love crap though, it's like the musical equivalent of McDonalds and some 12 year old arguing that McDonalds is better than any restaurant because they sell many more meals.

The Beatles catalogue of songs is anything but cheesy, simplistic and basic - Paperback Writer/Revolution/Strawberry Fields Forever. The quip about stealing from Pink Floyd is Fortean Times\Nexus ANALysis.

There's a lot to unpack from this list and the opinions surrounding it so I'll try to keep it short, and yes, I'm speaking to the man behind the channel and all of you as well.
I look at overrated bands as being in the right place at the right time in terms of the music and more importantly, the commercial viability. Every single one of the bands mentioned had the right music and the right advertising. Oasis would never have survived the Brit Pop era if it weren't for the marketing and their forced rivalry with Blur.
Nirvana came onto the scene when grunge was healthy and growing at the very tail end of the 80's going into the 90's. It can absolutely be said that Alice in Chains is better than Nirvana but the latter was more commercially viable in the end and still is because of Nevermind and Kurt's suicide at 27, thus being immortalized by his fans and put on the "great artists who died at 27" list.
When it comes to the likes of Zeppelin, The Floyd, and the Beatles, the marketing behind them catapulted them into stardom when the time and music was right as well. I tend to joke with people that I'm too much of a Floyd fan to listen to Zeppelin so I simply won't attempt to try and analyze them.
Your opinions of the Floyd very much mirror my own and your analysis of AHM gave me a new appreciation for the album I never considered.
When it comes to The Beatles, loving their music has been a lifelong journey and I can't say it's all good but the right stuff tickles my music bone with glee and gloom. Imagine falling in love with Accross the Universe while simultaneously the woman I loved and her daughter who called me Dad just up and left me. Had to put that song on the backburner and is still there.
As an amateur historian of music, I also cannot stress enough to people the importance of how bands like The Floyd, Beatles and Beach Boys created new techniques for recording and mixing sounds into extraordinary works of art and that modern music could and would never be the same.
Thanks as always for your words of wisdom and maybe try this for a poll: The most overrated bands most people have never heard of. (Until I went to college, I had no idea who the likes of King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, and Gentle Giant were, and punk that wasn't the Ramones)

Some folks confuses overexposed with overrated. Often because those folks feel a need for defining themselves as original individuals, visionary people with an eye for what many others can’t see as brilliant.
Hence such folks despises things that are a bit too popular or widely acknowledged...
The Beatles are surely such a overexposed band. And it’s their own fault. Even after all these years hardly a year goes by without a “new” Beatles release in some form.
That doesn’t make The Beatles a less groundbreaking band though. They were clearly a musical revolution back in their day. And it’s hard to imagine how music would have developed if they hadn’t been there. Hence The Beatles can hardly be defined as overrated.
In my eyes exposion and sales figures has nothing to do with whether a band is overrated or not.

As already alluded to in a few other posts, just because you like something doesn't mean it's genius, and just because you DON'T like something, doesn't mean it's shit or overrated.
Let's also give credit to producers who (as I've heard from some less-than-awesome demos from bands) often times transformed a band's mediocre ideas into amazing finished products.
