Bands Who Changed Their Style for the Better

- I made a video discussing some of the bands who, in my personal opinion, changed their style for the worse. Here, it's time to do the opposite! For one reason or another, here are my picks for some of the projects that changed their approach, genre, methods of songwriting orange general direction to a place that left them more mature or well crafted as a band. It's super subjective, so be sure to let me know your picks!
#metal #heavymetal #discussion #bands #jmorris #jmorristhereviewguy #themetaltempest
Obviously a subjective list so no harm done if you disagree but what're your picks?! The runner ups that nearly made this list and could have easily were Dying Fetus, Benighted, Invent Animate and The Contortionist!
My picks:
-Carcass (Necroticism and onwards)
-Cannibal corpse (when corpsegrinder joined)
-Death (spiritual healing and onwards)
-Megadeth (This one is spicy and even though Rust in piece is one of my all time favorites, I tend to gravitate a lot more to the more melodic albums post RIP as opposed to the ones that came before it)
-Deep purple(In rock and onwards)
Honorable mention: A lot of people crap on Leprous later, less proggy, albums and even though I wouldn't say I like them more than the earlier albums, I would say that I like them just as much. I thought it was atleast worth mentioning.
I love the Leprous and Deep Purple picks especially, top tier. Death as well! Once they found that footing they truly were unstoppable
Why y’all hate on Chris Barnes his vocals used to be best in the genre
@@OnceyougoFlatyouneverGlobeback I don't hate his old vocals, I like them. They were nasty as fuck which fit perfectly with the music. But I prefer Corpsegrinder, they sound better to me and he has a more frantic style which fit really well with their post Barnes music.
I really don't like Barnes' vocals now but they used to be really good so I'm certainly not a hater and I actually used to prefer Barnes' vocals but my tastes have changed a little over time. I'm glad you like him though!
Cool name btw lol
Corpsegrinder was a game changer. Best front man in death metal. Seen them multiple times live. Dude never disappoints
Corpsegrinder came to the band at the exact right time. I heard a demo of Devoured By Vermin with Chris Barnes and do you know how he started the song? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! He sounds atrocious now.
While not a metal band, i think Pink Floyd changed for the better after Syd left. His era in Floyd was okay, not great. And then David Gilmour came in, and we got epic records like Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall.
Absolutely. Dark Side Of The Moon is one of the greatest albums ever released.
I didn't know there were actually ride or die fans of glam Pantera tbh lol that sounds insane to me
When I roasted them in a joking way on my what your favorite metal band says about you quite a few peeps got 'offended'
Death
Chuck Schuldiner's evolution from Scream Bloody Gore to The Sound of Perseverance just continues to smack me sideways every time I listen to those records. It's why Death will always claim the Number 1 slot on my favorite band list.
Imo they just went from great to great, they didn't change for the better. They just changed and stayed awesome
Big time fan of Cattle Decap definitely agree their gradual trajectory has been something else. Humanure and Karma are solid foundations for what they’d hone into on Harvest Floor (strangely enough the most musically technical thing they’ve done so far) to blossoming until the monstrosity that they are now with Monolith and onwards
Pantera’s a no brainer. Tho there are some tasty riffs on Power Metal
Carcass’ Surgical Steel felt like both a crowning achievement and a statement album proving that they can still set the standard for top notch melodeath. That record to me is perfect, every track has something memorable and unique to offer without feeling out of place.
For me, thrash bands get instantly more enjoyable when they incorporate another genre into their sound, and I think Testament found something really cool when they added elements of groove with Low and Dm on The Gathering. Just became way more crushing while still being fast as fuck.
Gorguts is a huge example of this. Good old school death metal in line with Death (would even go as far to say Considered Dead is a more refined version of Scream Bloody Gore) morphed into a dizzing unpredictable ball of chaos on Obscura. I even think From Wisdom to Hate is a top 3 album for them despite the severely stripped down and less frantic approach.
Type O Negative becoming more doom and full of despair is way more interesting than their crossover thrash inspired stuff
White Zombie shifting from (let’s be real, sloppy garage punk) to at the time, a groundbreaking mishmash of alt metal, groove metal and 70s psychedelic rock sprinkled in. And later going full industrial n groove with their final album.
Suicidal Tendencies putting a fresh coat of thrash paint with How Will I Laugh Tomorrow and Lights Camera Evolution is more refined than anything they were planning to replicate from their debut.
Those are the best examples I can think of rn I am very tired :p
A lot would put them in the "changed for the worse" list, but I think Parkway Drive is a great example of this.
I'd second this and I'm not even the most well versed in em haha
IRE is when I got into parkway. Anything prior is just meh for me.
I'd honestly say Trivium. It's probably just me, but thier last couple albums, especially the last 2 are by far the best thing they've ever done! And knowing that they started as an amazing band is just crazy how much they have improved!! (Imo) I can't think of a more consistent band that gets better and better after every album!
I can see that! I think they've had some mid discography slogs but overall a very solid and great band with some sick members!
Their newer stuff just blurs into white noise for me a few songs in, I feel like once you've heard half the album, then you've heard it all. The last couple of albums have definitely been better but they just don't hit like they used to. It's a shame because I was a die hard Trivium fanboy back in around 2007. Weirdly though, I've been more into Ember now than I ever was back in the day. 2000's metalcore was peak
I always thought that once Motionless In White went radio rock, that's when they really started getting good. I mean, there's a reason their top five songs on Spotify all come from their recent two albums. So yeah, hardcore agree with you.
Disguise is heavily slept on
* Pantera
* Alice In Chains (they originally started off as a Hair band called Alice N Chains then changed sounds to a Doom Metal influenced Grunge band)
* The Gathering (a Dutch band that started off as a Death/Doom and Gothic Metal band with a male vocalist in 1989, then they hired an amazing female vocalist in 1994 and changed to a more Prog and Trip Hop sound in 1998, think Evanescence by way of Massive Attack and you have The Gathering)
* Deftones
* Faith No More (they originally stated off as a Post Punk band in 1979 as Faith No Man, then in the late 1980’s they changed sound to a Metal influenced Funk band, then in 1989 hired Mike Patton)
* Radiohead (they are a bit overrated though)
* R. E. M (they originally started off as a Post Punk band in the early 80’s, then in the late 80’s they changed sound to the sound we most know of them)
* Anathema (much like The Gathering, they started off originally as a Death/Doom and Gothic Metal band, then they changed to a Prog and Experimental band)
Totally agree with Anathema. Regarding Alice In Chains, however much Layne Staley is missed, the albums they've done in recent years are far more sophisticated then their 90's material. Incredible stuff.
With you 100% with Ulver. Flowers Of Evil is my favourite of their albums.
So good omg
Lol I kinda forgot Pantera used to to be glam metal before Cowboys from Hell I always considered them to be the pioneering band for groove metal
i'd say Paradise Lost, while their first record is solid they quickly pivoted and made four actually genre defining records, then another pivot into much lighter stuff for again 4 records and back to integrate all the pieces into a whole, and even if you don't like their 'synthpop' stint i feel it was a necessary step for everything that came after
Paradise Lost is one of those rare bands who have never made a bad album. A contemporary of theirs, Anathema, is another good example. Their early death metal material is incredible, but I love how they developed over time. It never felt forced, just a smooth natural progression. Shame they are no more.
I suppose I'll drop a few.
Diamond Construct - Went from pretty all right progressive metalcore to glitchy, electronic-based nu-metalcore (their recent record Angel Killer Zero is pure fire).
Emmure - After Frankie Palmieri's entire band ditched him, he decided to get some GOATed musicians in Joshua Travis and Josh Miller and switch up the mainly one note records of the past (outside of Goodbye to the Gallows, that one slaps), to a more djent-y nu-metalcore style, thanks to Joshua Travis.
The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza - Yet again another band benefited by Joshua Travis. The older records I adore, but the last one, Danza IIII: The Alpha and the Omega is on a whole different level. The Mathcore/grindcore stylings of the previous albums are kept, but with Joshua Travis's signature djent style, it fleshes out the record so much more, and truly gives the band a banger record to end on.
Within Destruction (kinda?) - This one is kinda, because Within Destruction have seemingly gone back to their Slamcore roots with the last EP, but their trap deathcore/metalcore stuff is fairly epic and unique in its own right. I kind of hope they keep making music in both styles over time.
(Speculative) All That Remains - I say speculative, because A. I have not listened to much ATR, and B. Because while Jason Richardson has been in the band for six years(!), they haven't released any music with him, but that changes this coming May 3rd. As a major fan of Jason's guitar work, I am SO excited to see it in action with this band.
Yeah, that's pretty much it. Fantastic comparison to the previous video!
I honestly agree heavily with Within Destruction and that's coming from someone who enjoyed their early material a ton and fell in love with them through that. As for All That Remains I'm so stoked someone else has brought that up. Seems like everyone only talks about the classics and nothing else?!
Thanks a ton for the comment friend and support. Appreciate it a ton! Have a great day
Mandatory Behemoth comment
respected.
I've heard about Pantera changing their sound a billion times and it's been said time and time again. Obvious pick for sure. Mention Cattle Decapitalization and Carcass, you're doing yourself a favor. Cattle Decapitalization has always been a great band, but it wasn't until 2012 when Monolith of Inhumanity came out. That was the start of them releasing banger album one after another. The Aantropocene Extinction is their best album. Death Atlas was a great 2019 album and their most recent album Terrasite was one of the best albums of 2023. They're definitely killing it in the technical death metal scene. I consider them to be one of the best death metal bands of all time! Mentioning Carcass gives you even more points because is just that good. The first two albums were more grindcore/goregrind, but ever since Necroticism, they've been doing phenomenal melodic death metal. Heartwork is up there as one of the best death metal albums ever made. Seeing them come back with Surgical Steel in 2013, is perfection. Nice to have Carcass back, even though Ken Owen is not with them anymore. Can't wait to hear more from them.
Whitechapel when they released the valley. Don't get me, I love their early output, but I really love the more emotional and personal stuff from their last two albums.
Though not metal at all, parannoul. Going from a post rock project to a shoegaze/post emo project is what go me into their sound
Porter Robinson. Nurture (and the singles for his new album smile) just bitch slap worlds to the ground and that album was pretty good aswell
Whitechapel is a hard agree and a prime example that clean singing and melody doesn't mean it's worse. I adored that record and it was one of my favorites the year it released. Genuinely hit me at the right time in my life when I was going through some shit and needed it, too. Sometimes it just works out that way.
And cheers for another Porter enjoyer, I've always adored his music a ton!
Motionless in white sounds appear to be heavy when they need to be now. Slaughterhouse pt1 is heavy AF and great. On bad omens is can't stand their new sound. Good video though
Reincarnate is a bold favorite miw album
I say W.A.S.P.. I love the first 3 albums, Restless Gypsy, Wild Child, Blind in Texas etc are incredible songs. However, The Headless Children and Crimson Idol feel much more powerful and really shows off their musicianship.
The Heretic (The Lost Child) is top 3 songs of all time for me. I can't ever decide on a real absolute favourite (closest I get is this one and The Books of Skelos by Manilla Road), but that song and album will never fail me.
The Crimson Idol is a masterpiece.
Benighted definitely, their brutal death metal work is way better than their early black metal work
Adore Benighted so much! Asylum Cave is one of my favorite deathgrind albums period
I'd say that the additions Jesse Schreibman made to Bell Witch made them far more interesting and enjoyable.
Oo I definitely can see that!
Voivod went from ok thrash to one of my favorite prog metal bands ever
I got 2 bands that changed for the better and then for the worse later down the road, Avenged Sevenfold and Asking Alexandria.
Avenged sevenfold were metalcore band, which was good, but their change was... honestly better! They they made HTTK and fucked up! But after that they became prog metal band which is... something new...and I didn't expect that from them, but I really find myself enjoying their new sound
Lovebites did the better with their fourth album. Judgement Day was a banger with some killer bass
Lovebites got mentioned hurrayyy🎉🎉 i do agree that judgement day was a banger their other albums are just as bangers for me
Electric Callboy since Nico joined. They even changed the name to be less offensive just because they were worried it might've been.
Post-Sushi era is just so boring, repetitive, bland and woke.
I'd sat Termina got better, mainly due to a production standpoint. They also have Chris Turner, so there's that.
Job for a Cowboy's got to get a mention. Trash tier when they started, evolved into a batshit crazy good deathprog band.
Judas Priest too. From a bluesy hippie rock band to lords of metaaaaaaaaaaal.
I don't know where they fit into metal but In This Moment went from screaming to more of a theatrical metal and I think for the most part it's more intelligent. better production, and just overall a better sound.
i prevail
Glam era Pantera rules. It had amazing guitar playing. Everyone that disagrees, go listen to their album "Power Metal" before magically judging it without knowing. If you still hate it, that's fine. To each their own. I just hope people give it a try first.
Glamtera = Superior
Pantera shouldn't be even discussed. (Buuuut, I'm specialy fond of Power Metal. In don't put it in the glam phase, is more of an intermediate album between the former and the groove era).
People may hate me for saying this, but Falling in Reverse is definitely the first band I think of when it comes to changing style for the better. Say what you want about how terrible Ronnie is, but you can’t deny that he can sing his heart and soul out compared to FIR’s The Drug in Me is You era. That’s an era I wish to never hear again.
Oh hard agree their early shit while nostalgia is so fucking cringe LOL
Deafheaven sunbather(blackgaze post metal) to infinite granite(100% full fledged shoegaze post rock alternative rock and dream pop)
Panopticon (atmospheric black metal self-titled debut collapse on the subject of mortality and social disservices) to folk country bluegrass black metal(from Kentucky to the rime of memory)
Code orange (forever and underneath metalcore hardcore punk sludge metal industrial hardcore) to (the above nu metal industrial rock hard rock alternative rock)
Bring me the horizon(count your blessings and suicide season metalcore and deathcore and there is a hell believe me I've seen it there is a heaven let's keep it a secret to sempiternal(post hardcore alternative rock alternative metal hard rock electronicore) to that's the spirit(alternative metal alternative rock nu metal pop rock electronic rock arena rock) to amo(pop rock pop metal electropop hard rock alternative rock edm synthpop) to post human(alternative metal metalcore electronic rock nu metal industrial metal hard rock Electronica edm trancecore alternative rock emo pop punk pop metal electropop)
Hahah the BMTH comment part gave me an eyestrain in the best way possible--felt like I was having a stroke lmao. And the best part is you didn't even overexaggerate that, its just how it is! Heavily agree with all of your takes, though! Cheers :]
Also I adore the pfp!!!!!!!
@@TheMetalTempestYT Thanks 🏳️⚧️🪕🎵🏳️🌈🎶🎷🌈✌️🤘
glamtera > pantera
As much as I dislike rap music, I definitely think the Beastie Boys went from a slightly above average rock band to a fucking stellar rap/rock fusion trio. 🤘🥸🤘
