This band have a great habit of making thought provoking songs, expressed beautifully with quality videos. I picked out one line of interest:
"Life is a waterfall,we're one in the river, one again after the fall." - “We all start off the same and we all end up the same.“ This suggests a loss of individuality/identity…my own thoughts. SOAD proving their usual musical intelligence with profound lyrics and video. Loved it. Sabina…I think there is a fair bit to think about with this song…a thoughtful reaction.

This is absolutely my favorite SOAD song. I remember getting this album about a year after it came out, when I was maybe 14 or so and just learning to play music. This was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on bass. I would hang out at my friend's house and just lie in the floor in front of his CD player and hook up my headphones and put this song on repeat. It's amazing seeing someone experience it for the first time. It takes me back to a better time.

Aerials are what we Europeans (or at least us Brits) call antennae. Your car has an aerial, your stereo has an aerial, your Wifi has an aerial, anything that picks up or sends radio signals has an aerial in order to do so. Admittedly SOAD are an American band so I have no idea why they called the song Aerials rather than Antennae.
Why do we call them aerials? Because radio signals travel through the air and anything related to air is referred to as 'aerial'. It makes more sense than naming them after the protrusions that stick up out of an ant's head...
Of course they're an American band. Are you forgetting that everything great is American? The rest of the world is just riding our coat tails and not paying their fees either. Europe is lucky that we're led by weak cowards and not a man of action like Adolf.

"We're one in the River and one again after The Fall" is the best description of life: We are all one consciousness before were born (like water in a river), and then life is like a waterfall where we are all individual droplets, and then we all join.rigetjer again at the bottom of the fall. Basically, life is an illusion of individuality. The kid in the video, who incidentally has two moms, is you and you are her. And the other people in the video treat her like a freak. But the song lyrics tell us that's bullshit. We are all the same being.
It's a super heady song.

The "Aerials" refer to the antennas that transmit the waves (radio, television) that blind your reality. Now we break it down….imo

Great song, horrible music video. It's virtually incomprehensible and the band was unhappy with how it came out in the end. The original concept was for the extraterrestrial looking kid- who's actually not an alien, but a circus freak -to look up and fantasize about how great life must be for the trapeze artists in his circus that audiences are always amazed by. That's why it's called "Aerials"; he looks up and wishes he could be one of the acrobats flying through the air instead of the circus freak everyone is repulsed by.
Everything you see play out on the screen here takes place in the blink of an eye. The kid is so used to being separated and hidden away from society and detached from the real world that he believes acrobats live lavishly. He's imagining a whole other life for himself when he's looking up- the 'aerials' it's named for.
Unfortunately, the record label saw an opening and used it as an excuse to wedge a hip hop video into it with supermodels, cash, cars, and stardom when the script called for the kid picturing a more lavish lifestyle for himself during the fantasy sequence because analytics showed those are the most successful types of music videos. Because if you really look at it, you'll see it has no obvious story thread or resolution. It just goes from circus freak kid looks up, a rap video takes over, and then it just ends back where it started with the kid looking up. It's just a narrative disaster, really.
It all got lost in translation and screwed up, resulting in the incoherent mess of images seen here. It totally missed the point that the band was going for.
I mean I always kinda understood it, but maybe it’s because I’m a huge SOAD fan and picked up on the lyrics quickly. I do think they’ve had better tho
