You have a good theory what this song is about. But this is what it really means. It is entirely about Tianamin Square. You see he is more attached to the government then her, so he gets close to the action but doesn't go all in. He doesn't want her to go, but she is insistent. So he's there waiting, a distance away. As the chaos insues, he has to begin to explain his presence there. He's just in his car waiting for his girl. As they repeat it it symbolizes his increased worry. Then the the solo represents the real cacophony and violence he hears. His words become plaintive, and distressed. Then, finally, on the last refrain, he realizes, she's not coming back. Sad important song.
Thank you for this explanation. I always wondered what this song was ultimately about because I didnt make the connection between the lyrical me and the tianamin square. I always thought its just a line to emphasize the meaning of manipulation.
I know how blessed and lucky i am to have the life i have but i do think that those who are suffering every day from war and poverty deserve the same blessings maybe even more than i do. We're all human and we should try to spread the blessings we have to those who need them. It's only fair.
System of a Down is famous, legends, and popular, but they are way more than that! They should be waaaaay more famous, more legendary and waaay more popular. They are soooo good!
Well said. The tragedy that innocent people face around the world should not translate into fear and misery in everyone's lives, because then the bad forces win. We should first take care of ourselves and the people around us, because only then are we in a position to fight for freedom and justice of people far away.
Yeah sounds good ...if there's a plan otherwise we are just sitting in our cars waiting. Waiting for when the hammers batter down OUR doors.evil triumphs when good men do nothing
@@AllenLynn-z9y It's not about whether you do nothing to fight against the evil, it's about creating the fort whence the cohesive might of good is impenetrable and the battering rams of Evil can't budge. Work hard, get that house, get that girl, have a big family, and teach your kids the importance of hard work, because without it, you'll suffer. It is always easier to squander generational wealth, than it is to build it up. But it is actually easy to maintain, you just need to make sure that your kids understand this, and give them the room to grow into themselves, and support them enough to have them able to become independent and able to repeat what you've done, if done like this, then your descendants will lead on average a much better life, and can thus create even more opportunities for societal wealth.
obviously what you said is very important and very relevant regarding the perception of life that each of us has, we live our days inside our little bubble oblivious of what is happening around the world, wars, indifferences, famines, etc... But the sad story behind this song is that of a guy who tries to convince his girlfriend to move somewhere else, to lead a "better life"...He is waiting for her to leave, sitting in his car but she will never return from Tienanmen Square.
One of your shorts popped up so i checked out your long form and you're awesome you're looking into the exact music i listen to to feel better when im down and your breakdowns of it is so cool so thank you for everything keep up the amazing work
2:20 idk if its just me but the way you described this and bringing up a massacre is perfect because one of the main reasons they (soad) make music is to spread awareness to the Armenian (they are all Armenian and serj's grandfather was a survivor of the genocide) massacre/genocide and how turkey (the people in power in this case) refuse to acknowledge the massacre they cause and pretend it doesn't even exist
So "The Outsider" by a Perfect Circle is a reaction that needs done. I know I'm not the only one who can say that song saved my life on more occasions than I would like to admit publicly. The likes down below are people who also were saved by this song and its not hard at all to translate the message.
I like that one because I through my own life can translate it two ways. one, the case where people are shunning the person with suicidal thoughts, saying they're making stuff up for attention when that's just how they see it and the person is truly struggling. the other way I see it is someone who's actually going for attention, saying they'll do all this if they don't get what they want, and the other person being done with them and telling them to screw off. I love the whole album. pet, the noose, blue, the package, all of the songs on there are great. peace and love to you, stranger. I hope you are having a better time in life now, and hope for you that you never get stuck down there again.
That same idea is discussed in Naruto Anime, especially the perspective of Itachi over Reality and what is really mean for each one of us! The anime also discussed other philosophical questions like Pain, sorrow, peace ...
"I'm just sitting in my car and waiting for my girl," is just a visual metaphor for the bubble we place ourselves in when the world gets too much to deal with and feels like it's spinning out of control. He's just in his safe space, not paying attention to all the noise, while he's waiting for his girl to get back.
Thx for that thoughts. I think you're right about that. But sometimes it's hard to know that I cannot do more to help for example. But in the way you told it, it could work. Even it's "only" here in my small hood. Like your videos, 🎉 keep going like that. Greetings from Germany 🎉stay well everyone 👍
What you describe as overwhelming sadness or despair because we can't do enough, I call, "The Kenobi Effect". Sometimes it's like you feel the pain of every living thing on the planet...
i doest matter what is happening globally, you still have to live your personal life, still have to wait for your girlfriend, still have to go to job. you cant change global things. only very few people can do that.
Well, everyone can do their small part on global matters especially in a democracy. You can choose how you spend your money, who you vote for, and what you do for a living. The actions have a strong effect if many people do it, while keeping on living their personal lives almost the same. But living your life doesn't have to mean you're totally passive about global matters.
this is a really good song. but I have one more recommended song for you by SOAD. not many say this, but the most emotional anti-war song I have ever seen is the 2 part song "solider side" it got me in tears.
Love that you are exploring my favorite kind of music and breaking it down! Great Job! Also, are you wearing a Nickelback t-shirt? Brave girl! lol! I’m just kidding! 😆
In there defense when you family survives a WW1 gencoide that America only started to actually acknowledge as a genocode in the 2010s they might make you a bit political
The girl in the song is afraid to leave her war torn country as a refugee and not knowing if she will lose her heritage and/or will there be anything left from her home she is fleeing or being taken away from because of the destruction of war on her country...her real home. IMO

Loved your videos. Two suggestions for you, two really sad songs, really meaningful, are "The Sound of Silence" by Disturbed, and the other are "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. Both are remakes, but both are very sentimental and well done. Hurt was the last song Johnny Cash recorded before dying.

Serj’s (lead vocals’ is the point of view of someone who loves an activist but doesn’t actually give a shit. Darroh (second vocals) is the voice of reason, or like a narrator, answering why the girlfriend’s political activism is important. Basically all the ‘I’m just sitting in my car and waiting for my girl’ basically sounds worse every time he says it. All this shit’s going on and some people just don’t care because they are not affected. He isn’t even standing by her side as a lover. He is doing nothing. Tiananman Square is referenced because of how that went down. It was a perfect example of tyrannical government.
"Lets see what you got Serj" I laughed ... oh you just f ing wait lmao .... not to be offensive, the realization of what's happening and horrors in the world, is called not being an American or usa born citizen.... do dishes in florida when you know your close ukranian friend died in Ukraine and your other close russian friend died there too just a couple days ago doing dishes. Watching the bullshit throw up on tv and trying to avoid answering "why do you look so upset?"
I love your reactions, and the insights you bring to the music I grew up with. But at the beginning you mention they stood up for democracy... I honestly think that the true reason they were there, is for freedom, freedom of opinion, freedom of speech. Democracy is the best we now know how to do that. But let's be honest, that system is flawed as well. I cannot think of a better system off the top of my head. But even democracy can feel like hell.

Lol, isn't that the exact opposite of the message of the song?
@@tanepukenga1421 I think it describes the situation but takes no stance on if something should be done about it. That's up to the listener.

"How can you care about anything when you know about everything?"
Why wouldn't you still care? Will absolution destroy your sense of emotion?
