Think about special alloys, you can forge new parts, but some parts really need to be extremely special, or wings, or the landing gear, or some other thing might break off. For flying planes, there is a lot of regulations, safe guarding a plane being airworthy. Do not underestimate what it takes, to get a foreign fighter jet into the air, the legal way. You don't simply check and repair everything, you need qualified people signing for repairs, and for the checks they did. Only then your FAA says okay, And you do need the FAA, for that is the authority allowing you to fly that type of plane, in the end. Remember, our laws of driving a car start: it is allowed for anybody to use the public roads, if.... and here come the rules. But in aviation, the law starts like: it is FORBIDDEN to fly into the sky, unless you do..... and here come the aviation rules. Do you see the major difference? Allowed, or forbidden? That shows the attitide of judges, of the law. Flying is not allowed, unless you stick to a lot of rules. And the roads are free!

Correction: backseater was chicken shit who didn't understand what the funny lever did in an emergency, and resulted in an easily recoverable situation turning into an unsalvageable MiG-23.
Other thing about russian vs US fighters is the russians can take off and land from any pothole riddled flat surface while the US aircraft need glass runways.

Sun and fun, now that’s an air show. As a Brit I got the rare opportunity to be a air Marshall volunteer there a few years ago. Marshalling aircraft there was an amazing experience but the people and the military folk there were super friendly and kind. Would absolutely do it again if the opportunity to marshal came up again and I had the funds to do it.
I was a newby at the Fresno ANG when we were tasked with picking up the chutes. All happy to be running out on the taxiway to pick up a chute when I reached down to pick it up by the big ring and I burned my hand. After bundling it up and throwing it into the back of the pickup, old salt driving the truck asked me "A bit warm?"
Nice. My first time flying in the rain I was actually on my 150nm student solo xc. I instinctively went for the windshield wipers in the Cessna, as I would in a vehicle. They weren't there, obviously 😂. I love the Bonanza btw... I flew a V tail for awhile, and miss that bird.
