Jeez it's 2021 and I've only just seen this vid...thank you for loving this little piece of history my fave plane...I hope you are still around and enjoying it...its good knowing the harrier captured another heart.
The only reason the FAA okayed it was because of his background. You'd have to go through a ton of training with someone who knows there stuff before getting them to okay it.
Does that not make sense to you? I guarantee there's been 100x as many performance car deaths as jet plane or tank deaths in the US. There's plenty of vehicles that are banned in the US, it's because they didn't pass EPA emission standards or crash test standards. cringe bro
You think this Harrier would be certified to fly at Air Shows just because it looked pretty? Thirteen months would have been spent making sure the insides were just as pretty.
You idiots! Its just a manner of speaking. If they say it looked like it just flew in doesn't mean it did, they just point out that its in a very good state compared to others i guess.
I was an F-102 mechanic in the 70's......one day while on the flight line a Harrier came into view and did a nose to nose with the tower and we could hear the back and forth on our vehicle speakers..it was hilarious to witness this jet hovering like a bee looking at the tower!!
OMG I love this man. I never flew anywhere, but I totally agree that this is a very special plane and he is keeping it for him then passing it on for the future. So awesome that he was able to afford such an expensive and valuable piece of history. 👍
There's a reason this man was a test pilot and a successful front line fast jet pilot. He can keep his ego in check and he respects this aircraft and what it takes to fly it safely. Thanks for the video and thanks for being a custodian of this piece of aviation history. I believe the USMC even kept the Blue Vixen Look down Shoot down avionics kit which speaks volumes for how good the Sea Harrier was even when in AV8-B variant.
After 6 years as a US Marine in aircraft maintenance and another 40 years working all over world in aircraft maintenance I was lucky enough to have worked both for and with people like Colonel Walls.
"Eventually my day is going to come where I cant fly this airplane anymore, but hopefully I can have passed it onto a younger generation who will be able to safely be able to fly this airplane" idk about anybody else but I have so much respect for that statement.
Hard to believe it was nearly 45 years ago I cut my teeth doing maintenance on the AV8A (VMA231-VMA542). Still have that same passion for aviation today. Great story, Sempir Fi
I completed my co-pilot training in 2009. But never got a job. I have been jobless for 7 years. I can understand what happens when u live your life for thing that u love but life never gives u oppurtunity to touch the aircraft. It kills u from inside. You are amazing sir. Godspeed.
Join the military if you truly wish to fly. Here in the UK you train for free to become a pilot in the Navy or RAF, all that's required is passing a few tests and interviews.
And if you're not in the UK then your nation's air force will still likely train and employ you. Or if you are desperate to fly go to Indonesia and work for Suzi Airlines.
@Ian Macdonell you must be mad. She's a svelte as a Russian ballerina !!! Ok so ration food may have added a few pounds around her waist but................
after 34 years in service...Only great respect to a real airman !! ... its your passion path that drives anyone who want and could step up...thumbs up !!..
My grandfather flew the F-4 Phantom in Vietnam and throughout his career, I love seeing all the old photographs and had always wished to go up with him in any kind of aircraft just to see him in action. It's really awesome to Art stay in his passion!
First off, it's always wonderful to see all manner of vehicles preserved for future generations to study, but the uniqueness of the 'Harrier JJ' will always bring gasps of astonishment. I sat in the pilot seat of a two-seater version, and that was an amazing experience in itself, but to fly an aircraft which can slow to a hover and have true VTOL capability must be such an incredible feeling for a pilot. Great filming on the video too, and good to see the appreciation for one of the most innovative inventions ever to come out of the UK. Best of luck to all involved in keeping the legacy of the Harrier JJ alive and well.
unfortunately the British authorities couldn't give a toss about our aviation history and that's why most iconic British types end up abroad with none left in the UK just static museum exhibits. However at least its appreciated and still flying
The UK authorities don't need to toss too much. Brit planes are appreciated so much, private individuals and crowd-funding keeps everything flyable flying. Not many places would entertain operating a nuclear bomber, the Vulcan, just for airshows. Have you seen the Shuttleworth collection and how often it flies more than all those at Duxford? The Harrier is grounded as a type not from lack of funds or type. The only plane needing a little boost from HM is the Lancaster in the BBMF. There are plenty of private Spitfires and Hurricanes and another Lancaster is being worked on up north for dreams of flight in a few, expensive years, all done without needing HM money.
I watched many a documentary including the last flight of the Vulcan, as well as the Falkland Islands bombing mission . You folks and our neighbors across the pond deserve a lot of respect . Certainly more than you get from the knucklehead in office here at the moment .
It's nice to see someone preserving an Icon of a plane that served the USMC and Royal navy faithfully a true warbird and a fine example of British engineering.
tootyfruity70 i would say that the harrier kind of like the P-51 in that they are both great examples of anglo American pairing the mustang would not have been as great as it was if not for the British Merlin engines. Like wise the harrier was a great British planes and when the usmc put there list of upgrades and improvements on the plane they help assure that the aircraft would remain the Best VTOL aircraft for many years to come.
I live at the home of the Harrier, Wittering , England, we miss them today, they are part of our village sign now, and one is posted permanent outside the RAF base, so missed, she's just like the A10 tankbuster, always needed,
That is badass. And thank you for your service to our country and for saving this piece of history and allowing the public to enjoy it longer. I hope you sell tickets for ride/fly alongs. Looking this up RIGHT NOW!
Totally Awesome! Cudos to everyone who pulled this together. I was a month away from graduating with my degree in aerospace engineering at Parks College when the very first AV8-B was flown by McDonnell Douglas in St Louis. I went over with a few classmates and watched the event. We got a tour of the flight line and met some of the team working in the fligh test group. 40 years later I have worked on and flown a lot of different civilian aircraft my dream has always been to fly one of these.
The gentleman exudes humility to such a degree that one can only imagine the confidence he has in his endeavors. Truly inspirational, the fighter jet is awesome, but secondary.

And THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE SIR. Let me know if your ever in Arkansas I'd love a short flight in the 2 seater...
I'm so glad that someone is looking after these gorgeous unique British aircraft. Thank you Art!
@Joshua Talley but the Harrier is a British aircraft.... Much like the raf are now using new American aircraft on the aircraft carriers
@Joshua Talley the British invented the Harrier, its an RAF plane that we sold to America.
@Joshua Talley literally a british plane
I wonder if whenever he crashes it, he can call Pegasus and get another one
Then he calls it and he gets there to retrieve his jet and it disappears

I used to work on harriers in England at the factory where they were built ,they were fantastic planes then and always will be, so nice to see some will be saved, well done.
I have always wondered if people who work on these aircraft ever feel upset that they won't be able to actually fly them, I couldn't imagine being a part of the crew building them, repairing them for your whole career and seeing them be flown by others while you know almost everything about the plane but will never have the opportunity to fly or learn to fly it yourself

The only reason the FAA okayed it was because of his background. You'd have to go through a ton of training with someone who knows there stuff before getting them to okay it.

No replies?
Dude, the only thing keeping fighterpilots ego in check is called ..... chain of command!
After 6 years as a US Marine in aircraft maintenance and another 40 years working all over world in aircraft maintenance I was lucky enough to have worked both for and with people like Colonel Walls.
I agree he's very humble.

Love for this elderly sir

History never dies
The Harrier was the last of the Best of British own built Aircraft.
For shame. I'm glad this gentleman appreciates a top quality aircraft.
Hard to believe it was nearly 45 years ago I cut my teeth doing maintenance on the AV8A (VMA231-VMA542). Still have that same passion for aviation today. Great story, Sempir Fi

Was about to comment that as well. That twin seat black harrier is badass.
HAWKER SIDLEY made some amazing aircraft... !!!!.. the Harrier was a masterpiece of engineering. the British love them... yes we do... lol..
Screw A Harrier. I'd rather have an F-16 with A full load out. Rock on baby.
Try British airways, I read something that they garuentee a job if you pass your flight school there. Check it out
Look again companies are hiring EVERYWHERE....
And if you're not in the UK then your nation's air force will still likely train and employ you. Or if you are desperate to fly go to Indonesia and work for Suzi Airlines.
u got a criminal history or something? wtf

Jay Leno buying jets now
First off, it's always wonderful to see all manner of vehicles preserved for future generations to study, but the uniqueness of the 'Harrier JJ' will always bring gasps of astonishment.
Maybe it’s because barriers are kind of dangerous?
But you could daily drive tanks.
just like some Spitfires..
Like wise the harrier was a great British planes and when the usmc put there list of upgrades and improvements on the plane they help assure that the aircraft would remain the Best VTOL aircraft for many years to come.
yeah brits got this one right. what a jet
And the Royal Air Force.
tootyfruity70 the best thing about the Harrier, it was British from the ground up
I live at the home of the Harrier, Wittering , England, we miss them today, they are part of our village sign now, and one is posted permanent outside the RAF base, so missed, she's just like the A10 tankbuster, always needed,
FAA: You can't just fly a Harrier, you're not qualified.
Nalls: Actually let me tell you how I'm the MOST qualified.
Incredible. I don't think many people have the slightest idea how much work is involved keeping a plane like this fit to fly.
thanks Art for keeping that plane flying , you have my deepest respect
