America's Only Private, Airworthy MiG-29 Fulcrum-B

- Here's some footage I captured of Jared "Rook" Isaacman's MiG-29UB. This footage was captured over two days and during three sorties which is why I have several angles of takeoff and landing. Jared and several members of the Polaris Dawn team were practicing for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 during these Sorties.
Jared's MiG-29 is the only airworthy privately owned one in all of the United States. Another Company named "Air USA" does own some MiG-29s, but none of theirs have flown in several years so their airworthiness is in doubt.

I was waiting for a flight at the local airport (Bozeman, MT) and was sure I saw a MiG. I assumed it was some sort of clone, but this was the plane. To say that they are impressive in person is an understatement. We have F18s coming through all the time but the MiG was something else.

for those that dont know, the air intakes are closed on the ground and air comes in through the grates righ on the top. thats cause russian airstrips arent as well mainatined as american ones, so any pebble or whatever on the ground wont get sucked into the engine. also so it can use improvised airstrips in a time of conflict.
Seems a poor design to have them so low underneath the jet also. Probably further necessitates the doggy-doors.
Thank you for that I was looking for an answer on those.

F-14 Tomcat enters the chat.
Good view of the automatic FOD protection intake doors at the engine startup, like the Cessna A-37B these doors automatically deploy and retract with the landing gear, depending on the air speed (and auxillary louvers on the LERXs open/close to bring air to the engine from over the fuselag ). They're meant to prevent FOD from debris on the runway surface. The Mig-29 being one of many Soviet aircraft designed for rough field operation, and near the end of the video as the engines are turned off the doors retract again. The doors on the Cessna were perforated more than the ones on the Mig to allow additional air flow through the intake as it lacked the auxillary louver system.
Good observation!
I just wanted to comment, but - thanks to you - no need for that anymore...

Back in 2014, the Polish AF sent one of their MIG 29 to a military airshow (AIR14) here in Switzerland.
The pilot showed the full capabilities of the aircraft in flight, seemingly outperforming western competitors (F/A 18 / Rafale). Consequently the planned display of the MIG for the next day was cancelled and the aircraft departed without showing it's manouverabilities. Strongly assuming the show's director (Ian Logan???) did not want to futher display Russian fighter jet superiority?? to the large Swiss public.
Guessing, private MIG 29's in the US are not allowed to show their full capabilities at airshows, under some trumped up reasons by FAA on behalf of US aircraft industry.

I was a kid in England when a pair of them visited during the late Cold War. They caused quite a stir. A bit of fear too. The Fulcrum and the Flanker were both superb airframes with a lot of room for improvement. With modern electronics, weapons, and proper tactical support the Fulcrum could still be very competitive for point defence etc (MiG-29s have been used like half blind sitting ducks without AWACS support etc -- so do not have a good combat record). I think the newest version has much better range.
I saw some videos where US pilots spoke about mock jousting with the latest Su-35s over Syria. Put it this way, they were not dissing it.
P.S. As a kid I used to think about how long to would take to save for a hot rod car. What I never factored was the cost of keeping one running. Would be even worse for a jet fighter. The owner of this must be rolling in dosh, or had a very generous pension plan.🤣
