I just got back into riding not having done it since was a teenager. Hearing other ppl talk it surprises me most say they found toe more natural and easier, but after throwing myself down mountain other day to get back into I’m finding toes hardest get used to again and been relying on heelside and falling leaf keep it going mostly. Glad see someone with toe edge trouble haha.
I couldn't do toe edge first day, falling leaf on heel the whole time, toe edge felt very unnatural. Then I spent a day getting the toe edge down and the heel feels very unnatural now.
Great videos! I tried snowboarding a couple years ago and gave up after two runs because i fell often and hard. Got out again this last weekend after watching these videos and i was able to pick it up very quickly. Not saying im great at it, but i could make it down hills without falling. It was very helpfuly when Tim struggled he went into detail about what was happening and you were able to give an explanation. Key tips that helped me (basically a summary of what i learned) 1. Always stay on the edge facing uphill - your edges might change as you pass the sides of hills and jumps so you may need to switch edges even when going in a rather straight line (first time i went i thought i had to stay flat and that led to catching a lot of edges) 2. Learn heelside stops and get comfortable with them - weight on front foot and get into a low squatting position. My backfoot swung out naturally (maybe i got lucky?). When i did fall it didnt hurt and i was able to stay in control. This was also great for when i picked up too much speed and gave confidence knowing i could stop 3. Lean forward. It doesnt feel natural but i held my hand out in front to help remind myself. Think 60% on front foot /40% on back 4. Turn by lifting toes up to go heel side or by pushing shins out to go toeside 5. Dont initiate turns too quickly. When linking turns point your shoulders where to go, then hips, and feet should follow. When linking i let my board go straight just for a second before switching directions. ( i was scared of catching an edge at speed so i took slow wide turns) 6. If you fall on your butt it is much easier to roll over on your stomach and stand up toeside facing uphill 7. If you fall try your best to remember to make a fist and fall on your forearms I also feel like its worth pointing out my friend who has snowboarded most his life had me skip the bunny hill and go straight to an easy run. This is because momentum is what keeps you upright and its hard to get a feel for it on a short bunny hill. Plus the place had tow ropes and he said itd be difficult for a first time snowboarder. I struggled more with getting strapped in and to the edge of the hill than going down it. I still have a lot to work on especially when it comes to being comfortable with speed, but i enjoyed my time out there and im hoping this helps someone out. Most important: have fun. Thats why you're out there. Good luck to all!

I have been snowboarding approximately 4 times and I am just starting to get the hang of switching from heel to toe and toe to heel sides. Normally it's because I'm afraid I'm going to go too fast, but then most of the time its because my timing on switching edges is off and I always struggled with this and catching edges. I didn't understand the concept until literally just now watching your video when you said "Unweight, Change Edge, Back Down." I was changing edges too fast and not unweighting and not going back down. I can't wait to try again this Saturday. Thank you!
As a beginner in snowboarding this series is great! Tim is learning way faster than the beginner group I was in. We don't have any board skills so I guess it's a part of it. Can't wait for the Corona to end so I can go snowboarding again..
I thought the same thing. I can tell he’s had other board experience. He’s picking it up quick. It took me many more times to get. However I never had anyone teach me. It was all trial and error
i got to Tim's skill level today on my first day, and i dont have any experience with board sports, and i didn't have any instructor, all i did was watch some beginner videos like this series and put it to practice, i did fell down a lot though and some werent pretty, but maybe without someone always interrupting if you keep at it relentless like i did you progess faster
@@din3832 same here.. i was just watching the other boarders instead of videos... after 3 hours i went to the freestyle park and had some air... but i was skating befor
What a perfect series of videos to learn how to snowboard. In fact, the most important tip for learning to snowboard is in this video: put your weight on your front foot when turning (especially side toe turns). Without following this trick, you will fall at every turn. So thank you so much for these videos and follow the major advice: put your weight on your front feet.

My coach didn’t mention this unweight technique. But I figured it out while practicing on my own, cause it felt natural and really help. I didn’t catch edges doing turns anymore!
Amazing series of videos, but we ALL have to give HUGE credit to the camera 🎥 man for the amazing footage! Thank you all very much. Cheers from Colombia 🇨🇴 in South America!
I watched these videos yesterday and had my first snowboarding day today.. thank you for this content i could really copy some moves and got some nice turns. And the name „falling leaf 🍃 „ explained me everything about that technique only by thinking of a falling leaf. It worked out perfectly. 😄 thanks again humans and youtube.
Thank you for these videos! Absolutely brilliant. I used these to supplement my lessons and it helped tremendously. I learned how to connect turns and get on/off the lift with these videos alone. That says a lot about the thorough explanations Tim gave as well as the excellent camera skills that allowed us to see their movements live.
Great work, Tim. You can see him beginning to feel more confident on the slope. Can't wait till I can get back to the alps! This is making me homesick for mountains
These videos have been so helpful i can see where I have been struggling I can do the falling leaf great but have been struggling learning turn and its purely not pointing my board straight down than turning
This is awesome. This is my first year learning snowboarding. I just learned this unweight technique. It’s great feeling because it’s the same as skiing. I believe I can build on this technique and move to blue runs next time.
I’m about to buy my first board but I used to skateboard and I’ve been skiing before i know they’re different but I’m a pretty fast learner and these videos will help me grasp the basics
Im a decent surf skater, going snowboarding for the first time in a couple weeks, i think i should pick it up pretty quick, the heel and toe edge also applies to surfskating
Thanks for this video. How do you get a smooth edge? I can get on my toes and heel but feel like I'm just spraying snow and my edges are not locked in when linking my turns. Thank you
Nah, get super comfy on your board and start learning things like 180s and butters on flat. Then you can start park ( make sure to learn park etiquette first tho)
Honestly , on my 3rd finished snowboard day. Meh meh But toe edge is Fucking difficult. And this guy hella good instructor , other videos not as educational as this one.
@6:25 anyone else get annoyed at the skier who just rocks up and parks in the way and doesn’t even acknowledge anybody.. pure arrogance I hate that shit. Respect goes a long way on the mountain and that guy has none. I found it a dick move tbh.. just saying
I think the hardest part for me when i was a beginner was trusting myself to put the weight on my front foot to be able to to turn on toe edge...
