      The camera dude is on skis. Usually when they film snowboarding or skiing within close proximity, they use skiiers. It's easier to film on skis than on snowboard.

    Hey man, I learned how to snowboard when I was 15 at edelweiss, Quebec. I paid for lessons and became an advanced snowboarder over the years. I have snowboarded everything up to double blacks. But you have said tips in these videos even my instructor didn’t tell me, you’ve given tips money couldn’t buy. For that you’ve earned my sub and also my respect.
    Now even with my knowledge I’m smart enough to admit I wouldn’t be able to teach it well, that’s why I’ve been watching your videos. My girlfriend of three years wants to take up snowboarding with me as something we can do together and I couldn’t be more thrilled. You have helped me learn how to translate my skills into factual information that can be taken in and processed rather than “here watch me do this and copy me”. For that I am so very very grateful and appreciative.
    We just bought her snowboard yesterday! I’m gonna start teaching her on some flat ground at a small hill near us in order to save money and not waste it on a lift ticket when her skills are inadequate. Once she’s more comfortable with your steps in the first video we will move onto a bigger mountain😎
    Thank you once again @SnowboardAddiction I will try my best to come back to this comment with an update when she’s fully shredding some pow💯
    Stay safe out there guys!

    Sore feet can be just your arches adjusting to working in a way they aren't used to, but can also come from tensing your feet or pointing your toes to try to control the board with your feet when you'd get more effect from working through your knees and hips. In the latter case loosening boots can be counterproductive because somebody already instinctively tensing will feel less response from the boots and board if their boots are looser, not more, and will try to correct it with more tensing.

  • @BN99239
    @BN99239 7 місяців тому +1

    You are doing great but the reason why you are curling your toes on your toe edge is because you're trying to get more weight on the toe edge. This happens because your body weight is in the wrong place. Try to lean forward with your hips/pelvic thrusting forward. It's easier on your heel edge because your butt is there and you can easily just sit down to put weight on the your heel edge. Your toe edge needs more weight over it, which is why you need your hips thrusting forward. This is exactly my problem when I first started and it's a problem for most skaters because on a skateboard, you have trucks, and with trucks you can easily initiate a turn or a carve by putting pressure on your toes or heels. With snowboarding, there are no trucks, so you have to move your hips to transfer your weight.

    In my experience growing up surfing and skating, Tim was me. By the third hour I was sore but riding well. 30 mins prior to that, sore feet, scrunching toes, catching edges.
    The main thing I noticed was my brain being conditioned to using toes a lot and having a lot of sensitivity. In surfing you're barefoot and feel a lot, scrunching them into the board to press down into wax and anchor against slipping on inside turns. Skating, you're often hooking a toe around the edge of the board to initiate a trick or control a fast/sharp turn with the back foot. When you're snowboarding, instinctively they do this toe-side and just end up scrunching because there's no familiar sensitive feedback like the skateboard edge or hard surfboard telling them they're doing their job. They just kind of keep going until they're strangely scrunched up.
    On top of this, I wasn't used to going that fast. Surfing you're looking in a confined section of the wave to hit the ramp or cutback before it's too flat. Skating you're just tricking around at jogging pace, there's no reason to look that far ahead. So on a snowboard, your brain immediately notices speed accelerating way beyond what it's so used to and you're so used to not looking way ahead, not toe feedback so feet trying all sorts of things, panic, fall. You can see Tim looking ahead only as much as he's used to, just a couple metres ahead when he goes to turn.
    So, I had the idea to do what I do going fast on a surfboard, racing to beat a close out by focusing on the next section. Looked way down the line-noticung how vast a massive freaking area I've got-knees bent-unlike 90% time locked cruising on a skateboard-and just pick targets like sections of a wave. "I'll turn way down there, then way over there, then way down there..." And within a run or two, the brain had clicked so hard, I was cruising with surf technique and flicking micro-movements with skating technique.
    All the balance, movement, and control of riding just another board was there, the brain just needed to figure out the ****ing thing and be forced to let go of some other things that the snowboard simply does not give.
    Was doing time-attack runs, jumps, 50-50s on wide rails, and small Indys within the next 5 days. But most of all, I was relaxed and pain, cramped feet, and scrunched toes were gone after that moment of enlightenment.
    So if there's any other skater/surfers out there, that's at least how it worked fast for me. Look way ahead, don't lock knees cruising, embrace speed, and turn long and gentle, don't snap, flick, or stomp.

      First time for me few weeks ago as someone who grew up surfing and skateboarding. Yeah first day was already getting turns together quite well. Was never prepared for those edge catches. Almost knocked out after a heal catch. Think it knocked some sense into me to pay more attention to not doing that again! Heading back out again next week. Stoked. Was enjoying some soul arches on the toe edge.

  • @othullo
    @othullo 3 роки тому +2

    this student is pretty fast. good theories Nev is teaching. the hard part for someone without skateboard experience is just to get used to the sensation, and fine muscle control needed for the degree of toe edge balance. i think for beginner heel side is easier, toe side is harder. but later heel side is harder to perfect. or maybe it's dependents on individuals. some ppl more comfy with heel, some with toe. it's also muscle memory too, so that you don't need to think about while doing it. muscle memory is the hardest part for me.

    He keeps complaining about his feet moving inside his boot and to me it just sounds like his boots don't fit him properly. The first pair of boots I ever bought I rode in for 2 seasons and had similar problems, felt like they fit nicely in the shop but when I rode in them I had a small amount of movement in the boot, not much but enough to make a difference and when I bought a new pair that fit much better my riding improved significantly.

It will be my second time going away for snowboarding, and it will be only my 4th day snowboarding. Nev is a great instructor and Tim is an incredibly fast learner. I think this combination has Tim learning at 3x the rate most of us pick it up, which is okay because it's a journey, not a race.

    I'm very new to snowboarding but have a decent long boarding background. I'm having the same issues with toe edge versus heel edge. I think I just need to get out more and het used to it

    One of the best videos I've seen. The student obviously has the balance already in check from skateboarding, so this video is good for more than just complete beginners.

    I have long-boarding (skated for a tiny bit too) for just under 10 years and I tried out snowboarding recently too. And I did the toe scrunching too as when long-boarding you'll a lot of the time have your toe over the board edge and will 'scrunch' to apply pressure and grip to help carve. Any longboaders out there ya'll know what I'm on a bout right or just me? 😂😂😭

    10 years of grappling (basicly learning how to breakfall and protect the neck/spine) prepared me for snowboarding and it was actually quite fun on the first try. When falling forward I just rolled over my shoulder. Falling back or side, just do a stiff ukemi. Still, always wear a helmet on the slopes!

    I really want to go snowboarding and I will go with my friends next month. I have never snowboarded, but I know how to skate and I'm also a dancer and I ride horses so I have more balance from that too. I'm just nervous how it is going go.

    He's only missing one thing. To shift his weight onto his front foot when beginning to face downhill and on to the turn. Makes you go into the carve easier, reducing any wobbly skidding

    I skate too and will snowboard for the first time this winter. I can imagine that toe edge turns are bit more tricky than heel. I think I will practice some backside reverts on a skateboard flatground till that time which are tricky too 😄

    Couple of things I'd say to Tim (sorry if they are bad tips!) Push toes down for toes edge, Raise them for heel edge. And then when wanting to slow down, look up the mountain on your toe edge.
