    Today we're teaching three friends on their first day of snowboarding! We're taking them through all the beginner snowboarding steps from learning how to skate to linking turns on the bunny hill. Before starting we did a quick snowboard gear check. It's important that your snowboard boots are tightened properly when learning to snowboard and that your snowboard is set up properly. Next we found out which one was the girls front foot by running and sliding in the snow. Your dominant foot need to be in front when learning beginner snowboard turns. Once we got our front foot we practiced skating and snowboarding down with one foot strapped in. This is good practice for getting off the chairlift. Next we headed to the beginner snowboarding area to practice our heel and toe sliding with both feet strapped into our snowboard. By practicing sliding you learn to stop and change the direction of your snowboard. Finally we practice doing beginner snowboard turns. It took a few attempts with some help, then a few small crashes, but all three girls linked a few turns together! For more beginner snowboarding tips check out the beginner snowboarding playlist! If you have any questions about your first day of snowboarding you can leave them in the comments! Thanks for watching!

    When I was learing I paid for multiple lessons and sadly this is 110% better lesson then I ever got when learning! You are so good at explaining things so they actually make sense and breaking down how snowboarding works so you know what you should and shouldn't be doing, when I was learning so often I would catch an edge or lose balance and have no clue what I was doing wrong because it was never explained to me. Thank you so much for your videos and really helping people!

    A warning to all beginner snowboarders. I slide withe my right foot as the front and when someone pushes me i stop with my right foot, but i snowboard with my left foot as my front foot. You DON'T know what your front foot is until you actually start turning. I made a mistake thinking that my right foot was the front and struggled with turning for days. One day i tried turning with my left foot as the front foot and not only was it easier for me but i learnt turning in a couple of hours. Don't make the same mistake as i did give both feet a chance and you'll see for yourself 😊

    I tried snowboarding for the first time last week. My instructor spent no more than 10 minutes teaching me how to skate and turn and then took me up a blue run, where I quickly learned how to link my turns. The next morning, I was feeling really confident to go alone but it turned out to be a lot more difficult without someone to encourage me, comment on my posture, and point out my mistakes, so I ended up crashing and tumbling down slopes for 6 hours. Anyway, I got pretty smooth by the end of my third day, so big thanks to the instructor who saved me lots of time and frustration and made my first day really fun! My arms are really sore from repeatedly pushing myself up after crashing though xD. Awesome content on this channel, by the way, I'm very inspired to keep practicing and become decent at snowboarding! Great full-body workout and super fun! I'm never going back to skiing.

    If you are trying to determine your stance on your first day I recommend trying both ways. Start by skating regular for 2 minutes. Then try skating goofy for 2 minutes. Usually the student can figure out their strong side within this time.
    When you have both feet strapped in you are free to ride goofy or regular, whatever you prefer. This freedom is why I like the sport so much.
    For those beginners make sure you take a lesson from a certified instructor. They will tell you about the 4 board performances. These are the ways you can move your board to get the board to do your wishes. They are Tilt, Twist, Pivot, and Pressure. I saw no mention of torsional twisting of the snowboard here. Maybe I missed it.

    Note! I recommend for a beginner to start on a magic carpet instead of letting them go down a green slope first. It really helps to learn the basics on the carpet and then go on a green slope because when I started snowboarding, I had to go down a green slope for my first run and I took 40 mins to get down that hill not exaggerating. But when I taught my friend, I taught her the basics on the magic carpet till she got them then when she went down the hill, she only took 15 mins maximum! It really makes a difference so just start with magic carpet. Also do not go on a green slope if you did not get the basics on the magic carpet because then it will be almost/ next to no help. And btw awesome vid!!!

    I remember.. Accident after accident.. Pain, destroyed leg. But after that all I would do it twice.
    That feeling when u cruse down the hill that sound in you're ears after every nice turn.. Absolutely freedom😎🙌

    Wish I had you as my instructor! I learned at Gala Yuzawa, Japan. I had a Brit instructor who was mildly bored and a beginner one. She forgot to teach us how to strap the board and didn't notice I was a goofy and kept teaching with the standard. She was basically saying, "Sorry, my bad didn't teach that" half of the time. Also there was a blizzard. Would love to try it again though!

    Also that you should teach them how to bail as bailing is a skill in itself, and once you've done it you know your limits so your confidence grows!

    About to start teaching my 3yr old next week. God it’s a brutal process! But feels good when you see someone get it, and a new passion is born. Last person I taught was my wife, about 7yrs ago.
    I’ve taught quite a few people, but never little kids. Any advice or tutorial link on teaching really young kids?
    Setting her up 15/-12. Wondering if I should do the usual:
    Heels/toes/falling leaf/linking turns progression...or just let her have fun bonzai style in the learning area for a while before hitting the bunny hill..?

    Hey Kevin, what are some bad habits that a beginner can create? I'm at that point where I can link my turns, but I've been told to make sure that I don't 'whip' my tail using my weight to initiate turns and apparently I 'kind of' do that when initiating my toe edge, but I'm not positive because I haven't had anyone film me recently. Are there any tips to make sure you don't create bad habits and are there any special ways to break those bad habits?
    Anyway, thanks for all your videos, they've truly helped me this season as a beginner who's trying to get up to the mountains as much as possible!
    Also, cool video. I liked seeing you instruct beginners in person. It was very cool to see your words take affect for someone who was learning! You should do more!

    • @goldengoat6796
      @goldengoat6796 7 років тому +1

      whackedout101 What you are doing is counter-rotating, I did that when I started linking my turns as well, the best pointer i picked up is point your front hand forward and follow it when carving, and let the board follow, instead of whipping around from toe to heel.

    • @whackedout101
      @whackedout101 7 років тому +1

      I mean, when I first started out I would counter-rotate when I would start riding switch and I fixed that. I guess I'll try and make sure I keep my board doing the work and not my whip. I don't whip my tail when I go from toe to heel, I do when I go from heel to toe.

    I've been following Kevin's videos for a couple seasons now and I know he's a great instructor, but I just couldn't believe how easy the girls were progressing. Until she (kind of) said at the end that they're already skiers, so now it makes sense :P
    Nevertheless, they did a great job!
