We get asked a lot both in store and online about which paint finish to choose for woodwork. In an earlier reel I shared the 4 main terms to describe the varying finishes when painting your woodwork (Gloss/Satin/Eggshell/Matt) and I wanted to zone in a little more about eggshell today!
Eggshell is incredibly popular as a paint finish at the moment as it provides a low sheen but offers a slight contrast to Matt painted walls. The sheen level for eggshell is usually around 15-20% (there are a handful of anomalies like Farrow and Ball modern eggshell being higher!) and it’s worth noting if you’re using a solvent based eggshell, this can take two weeks of curing to dull down to this sheen level.
The low sheen finish of eggshell is often seen as elegant and soft and like a matt finish on your walls, the dullness helps to hide imperfections. When applying the product with the correct prep work it is still incredibly durable and long lasting (a misconception of why you need to choose a gloss sheen level!) so it really is a fantastic choice when painting your woodwork!
I’ve done my best to capture the sheen level in the video here but as you can see, as it’s quite flat it’s hard to pick up so apologies if it’s still hard to see! Let me know if you need a closer up and I’ll try and film it another way!
Are you a fan of eggshell or do you opt for another finish?
PS how many times can one person say sheen level 😅🙈
