Painting Walls, Eggshell Finish

  • Thanks for watching everyone! If you are painting your walls in Eggshell, Satin or Semi Gloss finish, it is a very good idea to cut in one entire wall and roll that wall and proceed accordingly this way with every wall. These finishes are nearly impossible to touch up after the walls are dried. So you have to paint each wall entirely and be sure it looks good before you move to another wall.

Super helpful, to the point super fast. Ive painted loads with matt but when testing the eggshell I found myself thinking this is going to react differently and hereI am. Thanks to you now I can start my bathroom over the weekend (after checking your other videos for tips) thank you!

Eggshell is great for kitchens and baths because it is good about repelling stains. And as opposed to flat finished, it can be touched up by rollers but not by brush. The trick is you must roll in very tight. Brush first if you must. Thanks for your comment!

@@CommonSenseTipsAndTricks thank you, that’s really helpful to know too, I think the people who lived in the house before me attempted to touch up the bathroom satin with a paint brush as there are brush marks here and there and when the light goes on it’s like a neon sign saying “look at me”
Thank you for this, I’m bound to miss a bit and the roller trick will be super helpful

@@penguinepenguin6193 My pleasure to help! I've seen your story so many times! Painting is not hard. A skilled hand is needed occasionally but the "magic" is in my tricks! Also you need not paint every wall. I have painted one wall that may be bad but you can't get paint on the adjacent (connecting) walls. I have speed with my skill but most of these techniques can be done by a novice as well. They will just go much slower. Best tips for your highest quality easiest jobs to clean your brush intensely and use a wire brush! A grill cleaning brush works great!

@@CommonSenseTipsAndTricks I do have a fairly steady hand and I work in a creative field so I think that’s given me patience and knowing anything new isn’t scary you just go slow 😁 that coupled with really good advise from a professional is invaluable , I could never afford to pay someone to do this job but thanks to you; my bathroom is finished and it looks fantastic (few bits of touch up to do on my ceiling, beginners chores) I know I’m rambling on but learning that eggshell would be very different to matt, the do in sextons tip, the out something in the bath (dropped a screwdriver!) the don’t go over it once it’s dried a bit and all the other stuff was so helpful, I genuinely would have run into so many issues had I not watched your video and now I have a beautifully painted bathroom and I’m curled up on the sofa watching the TV. Thank you so much for your help 😁 and now I shall leave you in peace

QUESTION. MY WALLS ARE ALREADY EGGSHELL, CAN I PAINT OVER EGGSHELL WITH LATEX PAINT? OR DO I NEED TO USE A PRIMER? THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hi there Me Tube Your Space, thanks for dropping in. Eggshell is only your finish and these days, it is usually with latex paint. But oil also has been known to have that the same finish. I would say more than likely you have the latex paint on your walls unless they are over 30 years old. What I do when I go over Satin, Eggshell or glossy paint is to have the first coat consistent. If you going with flat on top, you prime any stained areas and also any areas that have a shine more than the regular places in your wall. You can spot prime any areas of concern with Your flat finish paint, Kilz II or a comparable primer. But usually it is not necessary to prime the entire wall with your brush and roller. Just pretend like you are spot priming patched up places or drywall mud like I show here in this video. ua-cam.com/video/myE6ih0k0nc/v-deo.html The trick is to make all of your walls consistent on priming! MAKE SURE TO HAVE GOOD LIGHTING! The benefit of using flat paint finish is you can touch up any bad part of your wall any time even after it has dried! So instead of using a primer which cost you extra time and money, you can go with your flat finish paint as your spot primer.. (Only one cleanup of your tools!) Also most of the time, you'll probably go with two coats anyway. So why not just go with your flat paint? In the same paint your second coat only takes about 30% more in paint and time.

Common Sense Tips And Tricks YOU MISUNDERSTOOD ME. MY WHOLE WALLS AND CEILING NOW IS OF EGGSHELL SHINE, PAINT. DON’T LIKE THE SHINE, WHICH I WANT TO PAINT OVER USING LATEX PAINT. IN ADDITION, MY WALLS USED TO BE OIL BASED INTIL I PRIMED OVER AND USED EGGSHELL. I NOTICE SOME CRACKS SO I WAS WONDERING IF I SHOULD PRIME OVER THE EGGSHELL BEFORE I USE LATEX. I BEEN LIVING IN AN APARTMENT BUILDING FOR OVER 25 YEARS AND ORIGINALLY OIL BASED PAINT WERE USED UNTIL I CHANGE THE SHINE TWO YEARS AGO. OTHERWISE, I NEVER USED FLAT PAINT. I HOPE WAS CLEAR. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

@@ACCOMPLISHEDSHEIS The best way to kill the shine for me would be just re-prime all of it with an oil based Kilz that comes in a flat finish. But for some people Kilz original is very strong and also dangerously toxic. So when I prime over an oil surface like paneling or trim, if the homeowner objects to the Kilz original, Kilz II usually does a good job. If you have cracks that show, prep those with caulking first and then you can mud over those or use mesh drywall tape because using mud alone will not work over structural cracks to keep them away. Drywall mud, aka Joint compound is dry and it will certainly crack in the same places it did before. Especially if those are caused by shifting of the house. One last thing, I have covered the eggshell finish shine with just regular top coat flat finish paint. If that did not completely cover inconsistencies in the finish, I would just go over the whole thing in another coat which requires much less time than covering any primer coat. Depending on your color choice, your primer paint may need two coats of the finish paint anyway! IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERN WITH COVERING THE OLD SHINY WALLS, Go with a primer! I have never needed to do it that way.
