So basically the ink spreads out into the water, and the soap breaks the bond of the water, but it only happens in the area the soap is in, so since the water away from the soap still has a bond, the ink is pulled towards the water with the bond, this only happens at the surface and not below it
If I got something wrong, or missed something, tell me in the replies

Water is a polar molecule. Which basically means it has a positive charge in one end and a negative in the other end. This is very helpful when they bind together because it helps create surface tension. This surface tension can be broken by soap because basically a soap molecule is hydrophobic in one end and hydrophilic in the other (one end loves water the other repels it) this is helpful because it can attract both water and oil as a cleaning agent. But it also means it can break the water molecules apart and push then away from each other. And my guess is the ink is hydrophobic and shares some of the same properties as oil in this scenario. Which makes it float on the water and then is pushed away when the soap molecule interacts with it.

I wonder if for the DIY paper, you could put some kind of mesh (like a cooling rack) into the water before you start dipping the ink in the water, so then when you want to take the paper out you can lift up the mesh

  • @musicbysasha_
    @musicbysasha_ 19 днів тому +1

Like swirl dipping guitars....drag through it to direct swirls through it! The swirling give another level of achievement or what kids call now "satisfaction". Deeper dip tank and you can dip larger objects like guitars, bike helmets, shoes, etc. This has evolved into "hydrographics". You can print images, dissolve and apply the print in a dip tank.

This is what I was concerned about when I saw the DIY paper project :) I'm pretty sure that factory-made paper has some funky additives which keep it together when exposed to water.
Nevertheless, great video! I love how every project is so simple, fun, and easy to follow!

I think your diy paper transferred the ink perfectly, you just need to use a screen to delicately lift it out of the water. You probably came close to getting a more traditional Japanese look with your homemade paper because printer paper has binder in it that rejects the ink.

I do acrylic pour paintings and that's awesome (but it's such a mess lol) This is different but it's still cool and vaguely reminds me of it. It kind of looks like wood grain even. I actually use wood as a medium for my paintings, so maybe I'll do something to collaborate the two, like dye a piece of wood like this and then do a painting on top of it. IDK! looks like a lot of fun, I'm going to play around with it! thanks for the idea

The ancient Japanese art of suminagashi, which translates to "floating ink", is made possible by several scientific phenomena:
surface tension, Density, Mixing, and Surfactants.
Here's how these scientific principles work in suminagashi:
Water surface tension: Allows artists to float ink on the water's surface
Density: Colors float because they are less dense than water
Mixing: It's important that the colors and water don't mix
Surfactants: Surfactants, like soap, are added to the colors to control how they spread
Artists use suminagashi to create marbleized paintings by layering ink and a mixture of water and soap, called "resistance", on top of each other. When the ink is moved, it structures itself into an abstract design. Artists can then transfer the pattern to thick paper by gently dropping the sheet into water and pulling it out from the side to let excess water drip off. After drying under something heavy, the paper will have a flat surface that shows the pattern.
Suminagashi is the precursor to paper marbling, an art technique that uses designs to imitate polished marble. The practice also incorporates Japanese philosophy that emphasizes the value of nature, imperfection, and abstraction.

If it did transfer to fabric, it might not survive laundering. Can you do this with acrylic paint? I did fabric marbling at a workshop. The water had an agar gel to support the floating pigment. I think the fabric had been "fixed" with a mordant prior to treatment, but I might be wrong.

Ya true good point! And no I don’t think acrylic paint would work the same but I haven’t experimented with it😄🤷🏻‍♂️

How about take it further.. look up cymatics, and with the same premise have the water vibrating at different frequencies (each frequency will be a different shape) then drop the ink in and see if it forms any interesting patterns 😘
