I love that in the Japanese version of the final cutscene when Mafuyu expresses concern for Kirie, she expresses that that expression of care would help her stay strong for many years, and that’s when he decides to stay and offer support. Very bittersweet.
I feel like its just as horrible what happens to the Blinded Maiden. You get back to normal life, totally unaware and the them pulled back for another ritual but instead of playing what you may have thought was a dumb game you get disfigured. They could have had connections and aspirations. Love this telling! Its an amazingly compelling story well told.
The stakes are LONG in that mask, like you already have the horror of having your eyes jammed out but they're so long it's gonna go into the brain. I doubt any of them survived.
I think it's symbolic of the role that the two maidens have in the ritual. The blind maiden is the worldly aspect, able to enjoy the world outside but was doomed to be blind while the rope maiden is the otherworldly/divine aspect where her duty requires her to not have attachment in the world, a virgin in the sense that she is pure of outside influences other than her sacred duty and destiny. This, the eyes that see the world are required to open the ritual ground and the soul of the pure maiden to lock the malice from going outside the gate. By falling in love, Kirie provided an opening for malice to sneak through and break the seal, which is probably why Mafuyu staying with Kirie might actually be the key needed to seal the gate permanently as now the rope maiden is complete as opposed to previous rope maidens that requires renewal every 10 years since their innocence of the outside world could create an opening for malice's temptation on their soul.
Dude, I cannot describe how much this series is slept on. Like, sure you ask any survival horror fanatic about this, and they'll be like "yeah, I've heard of it!" BUT HAVE YOU PLAYED IT CAUSE IT'S REALLY GOOD

I couldn't play it long. My little brother got almost to the end of night 2 but was having very rough nightmares from it so he stopped. The lore is in credibly good tho and it's thanks to channels like this that I'm able to experience it.
I have a soft spot for mystical artifacts constructed in the modern-day. It's easy to imagine the mirror having been crafted from an earlier sacred stone, and by extension, the camera becoming part of some greater machine in the future.
Glad series gets more love over the years. Also always wondered how did people who came upon that demon gate came up with that elaborate idea to keep it shut. Horror logic I guess. Though right approach would be something like: demon gate, meet tons of concrete, tons of concrete, meet demon gate.
They probably have other methods to seal the gate then but result in less than satisfactory results. The mirror might be a piece of that earlier method however, since having just one layer of protection is too risky (I mean, it's Hell's gate), the sealing rope and the blind gate was added to give time for the mirror to be maintained and reconsecrated since it's a bit too fragile to be used permanently in an earthquake prone area.
Here's my take on that, feel free to correct me if I'm missing some things: I think what Miku did in Maiden of Black Water wasn't intentionally "marriage" in a literal sense, she knew her life will end soon, and she always talk about that all she wanted to do is just to meet her brother again, so when she heard there's a ritual that can binds the living with the dead in the afterlife, she wanted to do that. It was just so happened that this ritual is "marriage", but that doesn't really matters right? since it's not supposed to be literal marriage. It was explained in some notes, that ONLY in a VERY RARE occurance that the living can get pregnant with the ghost instead, usually for people who posessed a great power of spiritual energy, which Miku does. So I think the matter about Miku and Mafuyu was in incestuous relationship can still be open for debate.
Most survival horrors are comprised simply of shock and gore with very little narrative but this game had such a captivating story I was determined to finish it just to understand the whole story. I hope they make a new game from this franchise 🙏
The main creator said he wanted something really different compared to other horror games like Resident Evil where you have to run away and keep as far away as possible - where in Fatal Frame you have to get super close to get the best shots and do the most damage. Apparently he had to FIGHT for the camera to be the 'weapon' as well, another guy wanted some kind of... ghost... gun thing. Which I don't think the game would ever have become popular if they did that.
I'll not dare touch this even with a 10 foot pole but I'm totally eating up your snappy take on this game. Hope you've been feeling better these past week, and glad to hear from you here again.
I love the Fatal Frame series. Something I didn't really see her mention is the way time warps around the mansion. The longer Miku and Mafuyu stay, the further back in time they're pulled. Rooms with huge rotted holes in the floor are suddenly whole again, alters with broken pieces of dolls and candles are all now in their proper places and lit, the siblings see glimpses of each other seemingly unable to notice them before they vanish again. It's Mafuyu who figures out they're both being pulled backwards to the day of the calamity and leaves a note for Miku to find so she'll know he's aware she's there. (BTW, the correct pronunciation of Kirie is Key-dee-eh) What they did to poor Miku's character later in the series is an abomination. I'm still made about that.
"What they did to poor Miku's character later in the series is an abomination." I still have memories of it. I do not wish to have memories of it. WHY.
@@AAAAHHHHhhH The writers, they... certainly knew a way to ruin a character. In Fatal Frame 5, it is revealed that Miku had a child, and said child is looking for her mother, and in some chapters, you play as her. It was later revealed that, in one of the most batshit plot reveals I've experienced, Miku somehow _had a baby with the ghost of her dead brother via _*_ghost marriage._*
Such a cruel and tragic story. I can't help but feel like the family deserved their fate. They were told the woman had made a bond and right away they attempted to destroy it. The underhanded way they do this ritual to the rope maiden, basically giving her no real choice but to be willing to give up her own life in an awful way just for ten years of peace is terrible. I suppose they figured two lives over a thousand but over all those generations who knows how many suffered? How many livesended before getting the chance to begin, all coming for the result of a simple game.
But was there an alternative? The gate is real, and left unsealed, would eventually destroy the world. I'm also of the belief that the sacrifice's soul remains bound to the gate until the next ritual.
If the world is the price then more like 1 for billions. I would feel awful If I would learn everyone can live just because she suffered, but without an alternative... Edith: Different question, same outcome. Would you sacrifice all your loved ones, their loved ones, your parents, kids, babys, no EVERY baby ect. or do the ritual? I wouldn't want to be the the person who needs to make the decision.
@@lightdarksoul2097 I agree with you, but I would it too If a world ending event would occure If I stay a decent person and go away. But I think, I would hesistate for a very long time before I would go into action. Dumb question, but would you give the Job every decade to someone else or would you give it to one person alone and they does it their whole live? One trauma for many people or many traumas for one person? I am not sure how I would handle it. Whoever does the nessecary steps for the ritual can say good bye for their mental health forever. So I’d never heard of this series until UA-cam popped your video up in the recommended videos and how had I not heard of this series before. Hits all my favorites about Japanese horror. Can’t wait for you to cover the other games in the series
Your narration is amazing! Gave me shivers. It's great to see the Fatal Frame series get covered here, I love the way you make it more personal by mixing the gameplay in.
I wish we’d get this game adapted to a book, it’s narrative is so rich, and even without the ghosts, the rituals and wrong doings of the Himuro family are terrifying, just hearing or reading about them is dreadful in the best posible way.
Oh, but this is only the beginning of the story. The Fatal Frame series is one big cohesive narrative, and some things that are lost can be recovered. There was a beginning to some of the Mansion’s victims beyond the scope of its history, and of others there is yet more to tell. Tragedies upon tragedies, generations upon generations. All stemming from good intentions mingled with fear, duty corrupted by desires and dreams. Compassion laid aside for the common good and burdens of pain laid upon the pure and innocent. In other words, please continue lore-diving into the rest of the series!
Love how you explained all the lore and told a story! I loved this game (still do) though my only copy has cracked and is no longer playable. I highly recommend the rest of the series too XD
I'm so glad this video got recommended to me. I love the Fatal Frame series especially because of its lore, and you did such a wonderful job of covering it. Your commentary in the third chapter really got me cackling though xD If you do ever make a t-shirt with that quote at 28:45 about things that shouldn't be tampered with, I will buy it in a heartbeat xD you've earned a follow from me!

I have to stop playback every few minutes, if that, just to let my ears rest otherwise I know I'll get a headache.
Hey, I know you can't exactly re-record this, but I wanted to let you know that Tomoe isn't pronounced tow-mow (2 syllables), but rather, "toh-moh-eh" (3 syllables). I didn't really remember many of the details for Fatal Frame so, at first, I thought you were just extending the second syllable of Tomo, but the extension on the second syllable sounded really familiar and I eventually realised why: it's the exact way people mis-pronounce my name, which is Tomoe (I even use the same kanji as the Tomoe in this game (智恵)).

This is a wonderful video on one of my favorite video games. Thank you so much for the time and work you've put into it. Just to warn readers this isn't a rant, but rambling ponderings on one point stated in the video I was unaware of despite the many times I've played and explored this game. I genuinely appreciate this video and I'm sure I'll enjoy viewing other videos on this channel. There's one thing that's bothering me and I don't even know if this is about myself or your video, I'm going with it somehow being on my end. I've played Fatal Frame 1 extensively, but not once have I ever come across anything that said or implied that Kirie herself sabotaged the holy mirror. Playing the game, it was strongly implied the mirror broke either because the ropes weren't strong enough due to Kirie forming an attachment to the world or the malice itself tried to destroy the mirror but was only able to break it into pieces and even broken the pieces of the holy mirror still held power over the malice. Whether or not the power of the mirror weakened after being broken is unclear to me and it certainly seems to fully regain its power if it was weakened once Miku brought all the pieces together. Where or what was the source of info was that concludes Kirie sabotaged the holy mirror before the ritual? Surely, I misunderstood something in texts or something else in game. And if I simply missed it entirely, where could it have been? It would make sense for Kirie to sabotage the mirror since we see her spirit say she doesn't want to die as she wept in her room.
Man all layed out like this I always have to think what the conversation was between those began the ritual. One guy goes: "Wow, this place is fucked. There is literally a hellmouth beneath our feet...maybe we should move." The next guy goes: "Nah! You know what would be dope? If we maimed, indoctronated, and sacrificed our children to it and turn ourselves into killers just to maintain our way of life on this mountain." The last guy goes: "Bet."
There's been a surprising number of requests for more Fatal Frame. Tiptoe really enjoyed the story, the gameplay..we don't talk about that. Though I hear the sequels are much more refined. Regardless it's on the list 👌
This video is blowing me away. Can I ask where you learned all this information? I played Fatal Frame dozens of times, and you're going into a level of detail I've never known. Brilliantly done!
Reading every single scrap of paper and book definitely helps, and playing the third game gets you more info on the Himuro mansion rituals, same as with the ones from Minakami village. There are some untranslated comics and things as well as a really... really... bad Fatal Frame 1 novel that should just be swept under the rug.
I played this game decades ago and you have opened up the nostalgia part of my brain so thank you kindly! Love your channel can't wait for more game lore.
@Domalom94 1-3 are on Playstation 2 for discs and PS3 digitally. 4 and 5 are on all current consoles and PC but 5... I'd play it last. It's not the best, kind of messes up Miku's entire story.
I've never really fully read/understood the Fatal Frame's lore and my God that was horrifyingly tragic. Thank you for sharing the lore along w/ your funny snappy takes 🤣
It's just another Tuesday for some of us.... I love the lore and style of the ff series. Didn't enjoy the actual playing of the games, so it's great to see you cover then and save me from having to dust off the PS3 controllers.
As always a great job! I can't wait to potentially see you make videos about the rest of the series. These games have a special place in my heart and it's a shame that people rarely talk about them
I know im late but when uou mentioned we dont know what the head of the himuro family was like in life but we actually do. The mask he wears is called the "mask of reflection" and looks like a normal human faced mask but when worn changed its appearance to match the true nature of its wearer. Since the mask has the reflection of an "Oni" or "demon" it shows that he always had a wicked heart.
The weird thing about fatal frame to me is how oddly contained all the evil cursed hellgates are (unusually)… like if the protagonists just hadn’t just walked into the evil mansion/whatever of doom they’d just have been fine and nothing would have come of it…
Better ending would had been to find a better solution for that process. Since there is no more of the ritual she will have to be tied forever 😢 It is after all a horror video game and not all of them have to have a happy ending for everyone
I loved these games, i friend from russia that let me borrow them. The second one was my favorite. Great video ^_^ thanks for putting one out there about them. And also for making it a good one.
I never really knew what Fatal Frame was aside from a horror game with a camera, the closest I came to it was the assist trophy in Smash Bros Ultimate (I think that’s Miku, I don’t know if there’s different protagonists between games) and I always thought it was a neat concept but never thought too much about it. But wow, this game just does everything right in my eyes. The gameplay seems fun, the environments are nice and creepy especially for their age and the lore is so dark and twisted. There’s a special place in my heart for horror which revolves around ancient rituals gone wrong, as odd as it may sound, and Fatal Frame really captures that feeling. I need to look into this series, from what I can tell it might have been an X Box exclusive so as someone who has a PC and a Switch I’ll need to see what’s available for me because yeah. I need to try this!
Scariest game series of all time..well 1-3 anyway especially 2 crimson butterfly. I used to play them in pitch darkness with studio headphones talk about anxiety inducing 😱
Hey Lady of Lore. Think you can do an Ace Combat lore? I'm a huge ace combat fan and there's this amazing story set up for each game and their psp prequels. The assault horizon games are separate since it's not the same world as the main series. I'm sure you'll love the story telling in these games because you narrate in a way the characters do between chapters. I love your videos queen!!!

Please we need more fatal frame lore videos, these are so good 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is a wonderful video on one of my favorite video games.
Never got a chance to play, this is pretty good.
Man all layed out like this I always have to think what the conversation was between those began the ritual.
One guy goes: "Wow, this place is fucked. There is literally a hellmouth beneath our feet...maybe we should move."
The next guy goes: "Nah! You know what would be dope? If we maimed, indoctronated, and sacrificed our children to it and turn ourselves into killers just to maintain our way of life on this mountain."
The last guy goes: "Bet."
Oh wow! Love this. Will you be doing the other Fatal Frame entries?
There's been a surprising number of requests for more Fatal Frame. Tiptoe really enjoyed the story, the gameplay..we don't talk about that. Though I hear the sequels are much more refined. Regardless it's on the list 👌
Clearly, self preservation and common sense doesn't run in the Hinasaki family 😂
begging you to make a lore video on fatal frame 3,4 and 5 !!
You should definitely play 2-4!
@@errantnightao3 I wish I could but don't know which console they're still on, so I may have to watch them on UA-cam
I know my weekend gonna be good
These games are all do underrated idk how but they are, and Siren, the original 2 with the Japanese dub, they're scary too.
It's just another Tuesday for some of us....
I love the lore and style of the ff series. Didn't enjoy the actual playing of the games, so it's great to see you cover then and save me from having to dust off the PS3 controllers.
Super excited for this!!!! Absolutely love the horror content, keep up the great work!
Oh.... I love your narration....
As always a great job! I can't wait to potentially see you make videos about the rest of the series. These games have a special place in my heart and it's a shame that people rarely talk about them
I'll be excited when The Lady Of Lore does the rest of the games.
YASSSSS A SERIES I LOVE
I would love to finish this video but my air freshener fell off the wall and I know a "Nope" situation when I feel it.
I love the whole series I own 1 through 3. I plan to get 4 and 5 for switch. My favorite so far is Fatal frameb2 crimson butterfly
This was awesome. I really hope you do the other games in the Fatal Frame series as well.
You are awesome, thanks for all you create and share.
I missed you, Ms. Tiptoe! Your Remnant: From The Ashes video is my favorite and how I discovered your channel.
I wish we got to see more of the Himura Mansion that were mentioned in some article in game.
Ah wonderful, I missed the first game and Crimson Butterfly was my first Fatal Frame game.
PLEASE tell me you’ll be doing the other games!! OMG probably the most enjoyable lore walkthrough I’ve ever heard!!!
The weird thing about fatal frame to me is how oddly contained all the evil cursed hellgates are (unusually)… like if the protagonists just hadn’t just walked into the evil mansion/whatever of doom they’d just have been fine and nothing would have come of it…
Can you also do a Lore for Fatal Frame 2, 3, 4 and 5?
THANK YOU!!!!
Would love to see Lore for the other games in this series!
You have such a nice and relaxing voice! Definitely checking out your other work ❤❤
Better ending would had been to find a better solution for that process. Since there is no more of the ritual she will have to be tied forever 😢
It is after all a horror video game and not all of them have to have a happy ending for everyone
I love your content
Have you done rule of rose??
Glad you enjoy the content. She hasn't made a video on it, but she did stream it a long time ago.
I hope you'll cover the other games too! I'm hoping that the release of the games onto other platforms might herald a 6th instalment.
7th instalment if you include spirit camera on 3DS
@@SabreFang121 I do not! But only because I have a vendetta against Nintendo.
Feels good to be a member (and patron!)
U could narrate The Suffering lore, both games. That would be dope :O
You'll be happy to know that The Suffering has been suggested and is on the list 👌
Oh my gosh what an amazing video
Thank you so much for this! ❤
Wow...that is dark. Good stuff.
HECK YEAH, I'M HERE FOR THIS
Scariest game series of all time..well 1-3 anyway especially 2 crimson butterfly. I used to play them in pitch darkness with studio headphones talk about anxiety inducing 😱
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS THANK YOU FOR THIS I LOVE THIS GAME
TAXES
TRAFFIC
GRANDMA
Hey Lady of Lore. Think you can do an Ace Combat lore? I'm a huge ace combat fan and there's this amazing story set up for each game and their psp prequels. The assault horizon games are separate since it's not the same world as the main series. I'm sure you'll love the story telling in these games because you narrate in a way the characters do between chapters. I love your videos queen!!!
Oh I hope so much you do the second game!
Hope we get a new game
Or a modern remakes of 1 & 3 after the remaster deep crimson butterfly
Because that would be amazing
"And then this character met a fairie, but it wasn't a fairie, it was a pirate. And that pirate was secretly the head of the Dutch royal family, and they new the real truth which was that dinosaurs invented the moon"
Tldr this story lost me
Loved the video! Are you going to do the rest of the series?
What sources did you use for the video? There was one or two small details that I didn't recognize from the game.
