Dayum. I played this game years ago and had forgotten how the story is essentially about people who went into the mansion looking for missing people who themselves were looking for missing people who themselves were looking for missing people who themselves were looking for missing people.
That would be interesting. I haven't played this game in long time and I always wondered where the camera came from. The camera has a piece of the holy mirror (which I think is why it can see ghosts/capture/ etc them). How the camera came to be and blew the mirror got in there, can't remember how it got in there
I really hope you don't mind but I went ahead and did a video explaining Fatal Frame II since many people have been asking for it and it's been 2 and a half years since you made this video. I did give you complete credit for the first one's summary though and even linked back here twice. I'm really sorry if that's not okay, just let me know and we can work something out!
I noticed that the house started shaking after Miku's brother mentions in a note that the house is changing, which I keyed up to the cause of the random quakes. Perhaps the house is changing around her, but she can't see it-- However, her brother does.
Watching this to prepare for Maiden of Black Water on the switch--aweeeesome! Thanks for putting in all the work since I can't play the original myself, I hear the Maiden is super dependent on knowing the plot of the first game.
A note: The term "demon tag" is literally just Japanese for tag. It's the exact same game but in Japanese it's called 鬼ごっこ - Oni gokko (Lit. Demon play). It's not some demon thing or something specific to Fatal Frame, its just how "tag" is said in Japanese. In a lot of children's games, including tag, where one player is "it", the Japanese call that player the 鬼 (Oni) or demon. However I think the game actually played in Fatal Frame is かごめかごめ (Kagome Kagome). Kagome Kagome is a Japanese game where children run in a circle around the "oni" who covers their eyes as the children in the circle sing a song that ends in the phrase (後ろの正面誰?ーWho is the one behind you) at which point the children stop where they are. The "oni" then has to guess which child is directly behind them. The incorporation of literal demons in this game for the ritual is essentially a Japanese play on words. (The Japanese language is very very good at this)
Nice work , really appreciate the effort you put into it , also it'd have been awesome if you had explanation video for all the series , including part 2 and 3. Cheers.
This was such a great video! You did a wonderful job of explaining the story and somewhat hard to grasp elements of the game in an organized, easy to understand, and entertaining way. Thanks for making this! I want to replay this game now!
okay so when Yae ran from her life in the second game (the prequel) she actually lived another life. I didn't know that, I mean I guess I didn't think about it like ever..
Omg thank you so much! The story telling had me immersed in it completely omg you deserve 10000k subs. The story telling was so compelling and informative that I was completely engaged in it!!
The camera in the third game is from the second game one of Kei's notes said that he managed to get to All Gods Village find the camera and sent it to Rei's home because his niece Mio freaked out when see saw it but the camera was broken and seeing as Mio dropped it and we don't know how or what its made of it could be fragile. The camera from the first game is theorized to be the strongest of all the camera's since it held a piece of a holy mirror while the second is said to be more of a prototype to see if cameras could be made for ghost/spirits. The earthquakes that happen I saw as the Hellgate becoming less stable and allowing more ghosts to come though and it does happen more often when you collect more of the mirror so it could also be reacting to Miku trying to repair the Holy Mirror. I actually Yae was the Grandmother in the family tree so while I was wrong I wasn't far off.
This was... enlightening. The story was quite confusing with the dialogue (or lack there of) and the intense thoroughness required (Especially for someone like me who doesn't even own the game). Thanks much for making this! It made QUITE a few things clear-er. And great job on how thorough this was! Explaining HOW to rituals worked in detail and the effects of the rituals afterwards.
Brilliant Synopsis, totally make a Fatal Frame 2 one if you find the time! Also there is multiple 'camera obscuras' at this point in the series along with multiple folklorists investigating strange rituals, its kind of the go to excuse for the series plot at this point so there's no need for a connection between each game although I can see other commentators somewhat disagree with this point (arguable there is connections between 1-3 etc). I completely agree that the game is based on folklore ghost stories, however it isn't a 'true story' but takes inspirations from such stories and perhaps real locations in Japan. I really liked the subplot of the fact we the protagonist (Miku) was appearing as an entity in a separate time from Mafuyu in the mansion. Definitely makes so much sense in the wider series as this pattern repeats, for example when Mio is chasing Mayu in God's village although it could equally be a spiritual possession occurring as well. I never realized the Demon Tag ritual also affected the last girl caught and made her the new rope shrine maiden and missed the Yae and Mikoto storyline. Also the link on your video isn't working. But I believe its referencing the zero wiki page 'Based on a True Story?' bcl.rpen.us/zerowiki/index.php?title=Based_on_a_true_story%3F I've copied the important information from that post. "The game’s frightening story is based upon two Japanese folk tales, both originating from the rural mountainous regions of the country..." then it describes the classic generic ghost story quote about a mansion being haunted outside of Tokyo etc. More importantly Makoto Shibata (chief producer of Fatal Frame) describes a specific folk tale that seems more authentic than the general previous quote as "In the same region, there’s a tree that is said to weep like a young woman. Many traffic accidents have occurred near this tree, and there have been many accounts of people seeing a young woman’s ghost. Two lovers used to meet at this tree every night. Although they loved each other very much, they were not allowed to see each other because of the difference in social standings. The young girl couldn’t stand the pain, so she hung herself from the tree. Ever since then, it’s said the tree weeps in sorrow. One day, a young man chopped down the tree, hoping that he could rid the area of the ghost and its cursed past. The youth shared the firewood from the tree with families in the area. Since then, those people are reported to have died with no medical explanation why. The young man who chopped down the tree has also disappeared without a trace." Furthermore the work of the folklorist Yunio Yanagita is believed to have inspired Fatal Frame as "Tōno Monogatari" includes a story about a house that appears randomly in the forest. From my research this refers to "mayoi-ga" however the stories around this folklore represent good fortune rather than a curse and do not refer to any kind of haunting or spirits. Its merely an abandoned home (no humans) that is well kept with heat, food, tea and livestock, the person who finds this home make take such items as they need, the general idea is "a house found when one loses their way". The webpage also notes another folklore story "Machida Dojo" to have possibly inspired the story but there is little more information on that so I would take it with a grain of salt.
Quattro IV If you can find them buy them, they can be hard to find complete and the Xbox Versions are better. 10 years from now they're probably going to be worth alot of money
I am unsure if you still do these kinds of videos but I've been craving to see someone compile the backstories of different ghosts ;-; but at least I got to see the full story about the first game!!!
I always thought the calamity was the Earthquake which caused much devastation and death. Quite possibly sinking part of the mansion or the family temple. This would have been like hell had opened up and those that died would have been the malice, holding anger and resentment for those who survived. This was possibly a grudge scenario where the spirits would caused the events to keep playing over and over unless intervened with a sacrifice.
About the camera, I held this in, I know it was made by Dr. Asou, so when the mirror shattered and the pieces scattered, one of the pieces landed on the lap, or not, in front of one of the guests after the calamity. He/she knew about the ritual before hand and when he had the piece he high tale it out of dodge and got out of manor ALIVE, he took the piece to Dr. Asou and he got to work making the first generation of the Camera Obscura, using that piece.
I know you won’t see this but much love from Mississippi you are underrated and I love your videos and dedication to the game lore. Thank you 🙏🏼 so much ! It’s been 20 yrs since I played the first one and you did fantastic young lady much appreciated and much respect 🫡
Hi, i see its been a while since you've posted anything, i hope this doesn't mean you've stopped the channel or that anything bad has happened. I really enjoyed this video though, and would love one for the other fatal frame games because i haven't seen ANYONE else do anything like this on youtube. I hope all is well and that you return soon!
I don't think the camera from FF1 was repaired in FF3. That would only be possible with one piece of the holy mirror. Instead I assume that mikus camera in FF3 is a manifestation of her memory of it. After all the protagonists are sleeping /dreaming in 3
Loooove the games and gave beaten them many times...but enjoy your explainations and theories. Food for thought..rhis also makes Miku the next in line as the Rope Shrine Maiden..and in linage as well as a possible sacrifice as Crimson Butterfly...
Great job with this recap. I put down the game due to the ass cheap boss fights, camera controls, getting stuck in the scenary and whatever early PS2 era videogame design shit. But i wanted to know how the story progressed as i was geting into it, this video made it for me! Lets hope i find a more polished experience in FF2...
There's still one thing that's unclear to me. During the playthrough there's a hole in the Entrance that, when inspected, the character will say something along the lines of "Something really big might have fell through the floor here". I thought there would be something related to that near the end of the game, but I couldn't find anything at all. Any clues what the big object in question might have been?
glad you did this video, how are the 4th and 5th game in the series? I felt they pulled a snafu by jumping ships considering the fatal frame fanbase was heavily on the playstation
the first and third ones are still the scariest games in the series in my opinion, but the fourth and fifth are beautiful! the fourth has a better story line but you cant get it in america though :( fatal frame v is crazy fun to play though thanks to the game pad! i think it makes up for the storyline being a lil meh but thats just me
Good video and explanation and everything but only one complaint, please just learn to speak into a microphone without making all sorts of wierd smacking noises, its just annoying as hell, everything in this video is good apart from that Well maybe also get a better mic as the one used in this video has an awful background buzzing noise
It's an interesting game. But I definitely do not think you should play The Game alone. Which is weird and itself. You start hearing things around you would like you're more aware. Ce, it's furniture that wasn't creaking. And popping was go and move to another location. Different place, different furniture, same type of creaking in poppin, Convenient right but I don't play it alone. Or at night. I wonder if anyone experiences this same Thing. Because it Doesn't make sense 2 different places, same effect. I'm a light sleeper. When I'm not playing the game, I can sleep. These creaking and popping. That was going on with something noticeable. Turn off the game nothing happens. It's just a weird Experience.

An accurate comment 😂👌
Maybe if I go there I will find my missing goald
😆
Would be interesting if they made a "Fatal Frame 0" as the pun intended the origins of the original "Camera Obscura" or maybe Miku & Mafuyu's mother.
That would be interesting. I haven't played this game in long time and I always wondered where the camera came from. The camera has a piece of the holy mirror (which I think is why it can see ghosts/capture/ etc them). How the camera came to be and blew the mirror got in there, can't remember how it got in there

Exorsizzle Explains! Hey I just watched your video
I noticed that the house started shaking after Miku's brother mentions in a note that the house is changing, which I keyed up to the cause of the random quakes. Perhaps the house is changing around her, but she can't see it-- However, her brother does.
Still can't believe that Yae is the same as Yae in Project Zero 2

Nice work , really appreciate the effort you put into it , also it'd have been awesome if you had explanation video for all the series , including part 2 and 3.

It can be the same camera: there are mentions about time rifts time stops in multiple games throughout the series.
Finally!! I was looking for a video and I found a playlist!!! About the fatal frame game and it’s lore!! Thank ya!!✌🏼✌🏼
This was such a great video! You did a wonderful job of explaining the story and somewhat hard to grasp elements of the game in an organized, easy to understand, and entertaining way. Thanks for making this! I want to replay this game now!
Maybe the earthquake happened because it's Japan.
okay so when Yae ran from her life in the second game (the prequel) she actually lived another life. I didn't know that, I mean I guess I didn't think about it like ever..
I love the way you ended the video 😂
Good job on the video! Really enjoyed watching it

Too lazy to play
Too poor to buy.
Salt Sama i feel you
Salt Sama play it on the emulator and download the game!!
too scared to play lol
Nice video! I've never played this game but have always heard good things about it so this was a good way to learn about it.
Quattro IV
If you can find them buy them, they can be hard to find complete and the Xbox Versions are better. 10 years from now they're probably going to be worth alot of money
Can you PLEASE make more explanation videos for video games? I LOVED THIS.
Yae is the same Yae from Fatal Frame II--the girl who was supposed to strangle her twin sister Sae.
I am unsure if you still do these kinds of videos but I've been craving to see someone compile the backstories of different ghosts ;-; but at least I got to see the full story about the first game!!!
This helped a lot are you planning to do another when you finish Fatal Frame 2?
Excellent video!! Thank you. The Fatal Frame Saga Is one of the scariest games out there (if not the most).
This game is based on a urban legend of the humaru family.(sorry if wrong spellings)
personaly i think that miku has a habit of chasing mafuyu ever since the oringinal fatal frame, she keeps chasing him in ff3. talk abt bad habits lol
it's so hard to finish this game since its so scary and creepy. that what makes the game amazing
I always thought the calamity was the Earthquake which caused much devastation and death. Quite possibly sinking part of the mansion or the family temple. Great video. I just finished the game and enjoyed the story a lot. Thanks for resuming it. Even caught some stuff I missed from the game. Great job.
About the camera, I held this in, I know it was made by Dr. Asou, so when the mirror shattered and the pieces scattered, one of the pieces landed on the lap, or not, in front of one of the guests after the calamity. This explanation was so good
And I liked the ending of the vudeo quite a lot 😂😂
isn't the fish tank room a room that has a constantly respawning ghost in it?
I guess they were hungry
I know you won’t see this but much love from Mississippi you are underrated and I love your videos and dedication to the game lore. Thank you 🙏🏼 so much ! It’s been 20 yrs since I played the first one and you did fantastic young lady much appreciated and much respect 🫡
miku is also in Fatal Frame 5
Damn....Why i love fatal frame series is the stories and this is the first time i heard the story of Fatal Frame 1
I miss fatal frame...
I wander how much should you love Gothic themes to come up with such a dark story. Great stuff.
Hi, i see its been a while since you've posted anything, i hope this doesn't mean you've stopped the channel or that anything bad has happened. I really enjoyed this video though, and would love one for the other fatal frame games because i haven't seen ANYONE else do anything like this on youtube. I hope all is well and that you return soon!
this channel needs more SANDWICHES!!!
it took a while but I fell in
They're video game characters, you weirdo.
this is harder than the second game, there's not enough health scattered about, i keep dying in the same place.
id really like this about fatal frame 2
The ending 😂😂😂 I died laughing.
I don't think the camera from FF1 was repaired in FF3. That would only be possible with one piece of the holy mirror. Instead I assume that mikus camera in FF3 is a manifestation of her memory of it. After all the protagonists are sleeping /dreaming in 3
How did someone from this game make it as an assist trophy in smash ultimate...holy shit dude
Loooove the games and gave beaten them many times...but enjoy your explainations and theories. Food for thought..rhis also makes Miku the next in line as the Rope Shrine Maiden..and in linage as well as a possible sacrifice as Crimson Butterfly...
Only twins can be sacrificed in the Crimson Butterly ritual and Miku and Mafuyu aren't twins...
In fatal frame 5 mafuyu still alive? Also Miku became suicidal and has a daughter now
what i don't even know this game until i read the real story and comments were saying about this game
Loved this explanation video.
That was a great video ❤️, I wanted something like this as I am toooo scared to play it 😅
Please do more of fatal frame
Well made. Well said... Well sectioned...!!! Loveeee the vids
hey man, love ya videos
On the cover it says True Story.
Loved your video! Thank you for your insight 🦊💜

The camera never changes its the same camera. The story line is Fatal Frame 2 then 1 then 3
Beg to differ. In FF 5 Miu (miku's daughter) did not have her own camera obscura
I think that Based on a True Story is a market ploy for the english localization team
wow, Kirie had her whole life stolen from her; kind of like Jodie from Beyond: Two Souls
lol, the whole missing person concept starts to sound ridiculous
Thanks!

Gr8 explaination mam can u pls do the same for silent hill series a humble request from ur fan
Thanks for this .
Love your work
Good video and explanation and everything but only one complaint, please just learn to speak into a microphone without making all sorts of wierd smacking noises, its just annoying as hell, everything in this video is good apart from that
Well maybe also get a better mic as the one used in this video has an awful background buzzing noise
this is so good thank you for this video
Thanks, this was great
Is this the story for fatal frame 1 only? Or all 3 games?
+Hamad Alshamsi Just Fatal Frame 1, but she does mention some of the other games a few times.
the long armed man reminded me too much of Marilyn Manson
Good game but alot of backtracking and hard puzzles
It's an interesting game.

Im sorry but im so disturbed by the noise of your mouth it’s so close to the mic
I'm seriously disheartened by people who play video games ; and the game gives perfect pronunciation , and then the person just goes "Fuck it, I'll just say it how I want" (though its incorrect) "Kiri-A"
It's just kirie, the "e" in Japanese isn't always the sound EY.
Tomoe is TOE - MO
*sigh* Then again you have a Vulpix as your channel mascot so its already apparent of fucked of name prounonciatations of the Pokémon community.
Base on true story mean it's kinda real so holy s h I t
fatal frame 1 "the house of the missing"
Stop smacking your lips together it's really Annoying to me or at least try to not do it so much sorry if I sounded Rude
Jeez, either get some water or stop smacking your lips all the time.
