As a metal vocalist it's so refreshing seeing just an honest reaction to her vocal ability, not just OH MY FUCKING GOD ITS A GIRL SCREAMING AND I DID NOT EXPECT SUCH A SHIFT IN TONE.
Caitlin Morffwous I was more surprised that she went so low. The only growlers I’ve seen are rather large. She seems so petite for the sound she makes. It’s honestly amazing and a testament to her talent and practice.

I think it’s because he honestly likes metal. She isn’t the first screamer he’s reacted to, and he appreciated the work that goes into doing it well. And he’s also really great for providing information about how things are done - why they’re done well or not, and when he does critique, he’s never negative.
Seriously, he reacted to and critiqued a video of the worst Idol performances. Never once did he get negative or mean, but he did provide helpful critiques. He’s by far the best vocal coach reacting on UA-cam. I’d love to have him as my voice teacher. I know he’d never be negative or mean about anything.

Tatiana is not only a damn good clean vocalist but one of, if not the best female growler.
And one of the best songwriters in the business, her lyrics are off the charts
all the other female growlers are shit. Jinjer has any other female fronted metal act beat

I'm very proud to say that my band is going to open for Jinjer next month and I'll be able to know them in person. Tatiana is definetly an amazing vocalist and I'm glad you reacted to her.

As someone who is studying singing this stuff is priceless, I've learned SO MUCH from this guy, incredible.
I'm honestly right here with you. Sam does the best analysis; easily understood for enthusiast or casual singer and he always seems to be saying exactly what my brain can not articulate.
He's also really positive in his analysis as well, rather than overly critical like I can be. It'd be cool to have this guy as a teacher.
I love how casually you tackle harsh vocals in metal music. Really like your videos on pop singers, but the rock and metal stuff pushed me over the edge towards subscribing and getting notifications.

@@SamJohnsonVoice its kinda the same technique as seen in the Mongolian or tibetan throat singing but it's brought to "a new level" as you do it "louder". It is difficult to explain tho, it's the closest thing i could come up as an example.
It's hard to explain, try to imitate a growling dog, or imagine that you are trying to burp. That's how I learned it. ;)

At times I think she's great, but to my ear she does way too much of the easy sounding, low effort harsh vocals. It's probably just a tolerance I've built up, but if I don't hear the strain it doesn't do it for me. I love the desperate sound when a vocalist puts everything they have into it. Caro from Oathbreaker is a good example of a female vocalist who does this.

You are the King of really nailing every nuance of what the singer is doing, the reason they are doing it, how they could improve and why. Not only that your also very solid, consistent and consistently honest while maintaining a wonderful gentlemanly humbleness about yourself that few people have. Im honestly SO SO glad that i accidentally stumbled into this song. It has really touched something fundamental in me. It has given me new inspiration and i feel like doing everything in my power, to become a better musician. She is such a pretty drop dead gorgeous woman, and oh my lord does she sing like an absolute savage! The rest of the band is equally as talented. Im lost for words like the rest of you.

Since you wanted to hear a female singer who sings harsh vocals sing clean ones also and the fact that she goes a lil bit higher in the end kinda fitted what you asked. I just LOVE how professional you are. I've seen other vocal vids react to Jinjer, and they always put in an opinion about how "it's weird, or bad, or creepy" and I really respect that you stick to the voice and give a constructive analysis without judgement to metal music

I love that woman. Such a talented beauty. I play this song for my non-metal friends and they love it until she takes off with the distorted vocals. Makes for a good laugh for me. Their video "I Speak Astronomy" is worth an analysis, as well.
and their live video "who's gonna be the one" is a must. Performing so accurately and perfectly in live condition, it's just awesome (and I'm talking about the whole band, not just the singer)
So for a couple of months now, I've been continuously getting recommended your vocal reactions and was hesitant at first. 3 nights ago I ended up watching one video then before i knew it I watched 7 more. You do so well not criticizing the artist or the genre rather you break down the vocals, stay professional and still have fun! Prior to your videos, I had no idea about the importance of vowels and vowel choice from one to another. I've noticed an improvement in my sustain and not getting tongue tied because I'm figuring out the best vowels to use and best way to sing with my instrument. Thank you! SUBSCRIBED!

Jinjer Outlander shows alot of her range with alot more high notes and alot of vocal transitions between her clean and scream vocals .
I’ve watched a lot of reaction videos to this song and I really like how you comment on the consistency of her breathing and control. Whether you love or hate the music style/genre, (I like Metal, but I am not a fan of that particular type of vocal; though I like this song a lot), the one thing that’s evident: the lady is talented. She has complete control of her voice and I respect, admire and am entertained by that. I catch myself smiling when I hear this song. There are a few other Jinjer songs that I also similarly enjoy. This was a very nice reaction video. Thanks for doing it!

There's really not much trickery with Pete's vocals. He has a naturally deep voice. The "I hate the morning" section of "Haunted", holy cow. I envision the entire Earth rumbling every time I hear it.

I love this track. Which is saying something, as I tend to be old-school in demanding to be able to hear lyrics. It's an interesting modern variation on the quiet-loud-quiet Pixies, Nirvana etc theme in my book. The musicians do a great job delivering feel & dynamics on both sides of that coin, & the fact she sings well means I'm subconsciously forgiving the growls I reckon!

Compressors and post-recording support. Can't you hear the layering in the growl? There's at least two, sometimes 3, layered takes. Sure she can growl, but that depth is aided.

Clicked so fast! I heard this for the first time just over a week ago, love it but massive shock the first time i listened to it, as many people would be. Love your reactions and that you don't just stick to one genre.
To keep that shock going, watch all the Jinjer Pisces Live session REACTIONS. Some are 'meh', but when you get to see someone ELSE have that same shocked/chills reaction....you get to experience all over again :)

Your channel must be one of the best suggestions I have had on UA-cam for such a long time! While I have never considered myself to have an interest in vocals, just watching your videos and seeing how passionate and excited you are about what you teach made me subscribe instantly. I love that you also analyse such a diverse range of artists and music as well. So I want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge with us in such an uplifting and constructive way, you have definitely made me want to learn more.

I like you are deviating from only pop music lately, if you wanna see something amazing you should react to Ever Dream by Nightwish live at Wacken 2013 ( LISTEN ALL THE WAY TO THE END TRUST ME) , the singer is floor Jansen she's a metal singer that has been around since the late 90's and a vocal coach herself, that song shows a little portion of what she can do she's capable of doing anything from high belting, head voice(operatic), soft, growling, anything. Other songs are Storytime (shows her rocky voice, operatic and high belting at the end), Ghost Love Score (lasts 10 minutes but is the most dynamic one), Greatest Show on Earth ( lasts almost 20 minutes) .... Anyway whichever one you choose make sure you listen all the way to the end, she likes to end flashy.

He did a compilation of the female metal singers, but I wanted to hear his particular analysis of this performance as well. Particularly the ending because to me, it sounded strained , though it is obviously gorgeous and gives me chills. I wonder if she is pushing chest or blending etc.
Levi Everarts i already watched it, and i didn't like the clip that the person who made that video put in it, i mean there are tons of good perfromances from her and yet that person chose her one bad show before she went into hiatus for like 4 years. :(
ShadowLeafAliyah i doubt it is starined, she seems pretty comfortable in her high chest voice even more than in her operatic style if anything i think she releases all that she was holdin in through out the previous portion of the song. XD
Yeah that's why I'm curious what Sam would say since not everyone hears what I do. I think that compilation used something from After Forever. She's evolved a lot since then!
Ahhhh why am I so addicted to this channel XD. This is the 8th consecutive Sam Johnson video I've watched tonight (it's 1 am where I live), and I have school tomorrow! This is also the first youtube vocal instructor whose videos I've watched who really focuses on technique, and actually offers thoughtful critique instead of just reacting. I don't have a clue how to sing (although I wish I did), but these videos are genuinely captivating. One of the few UA-cam channels left that offers quality content! :D
I genuinly love his reaction. He is not close-minded like some others. A true vocal coach who knows every vocal techniques.
I know a few people have mentioned it already but I agree that an Opeth examination is due in the near future. Mikael Åkerfeldt really is a phenomenal singer. He doesn't usually hit a lot of highs with his clean vocals but I'll be damned if it isn't always smooth. Not to mention the amount of control he has with his screams.

Absolutely. I love the contrast between his cleans and screams. His cleans are so smooth and sound like they can lull you into sleep while his screams perk your eyes and ears wide open and just grab your attention instantly. It's difficult to do that and still compliment each other but in Mikael's case, it's seemless.
